3:34 That is too funny. It so happens that is the EXACT reason that drove me to your find your video. Been playing for a lifetime and still can't always remember those pesky send/receive rules for the FX loop! GREAT VIDEO and a great explanation of this. Thank you!

This could potentially be a very involved conversation, but the basic answer depends on how you are using your gear and what type of effects you are running. For example, some guitar amplifier effects loops can operate at line level, which makes them better suited for use with rackmount effects processors.
But the big question is where any distortion you are using is being generated. If the distortion/overdrive is coming from the amplifier itself, using the effects loop allows you to place effects, such as delay, reverb, and rotary speaker, after the distortion. This normally results in a better result - running a delay into the front of a distorted amp can result in a muddy, messy sound.
However, other effects, such as compressors, overdrives, fuzzes, wahs, and more, could be considered to “condition” the signal before it enters the amp. You could run those types of effects in the amp’s loop, but you would probably not enjoy the results.
If your distortion/overdrive is coming from pedals in front of the amp, and the amp is being run as a clean platform for your pedals, then you could run your time-based effects, such as delay and reverb, either after the dirt pedals before the front of the amp, or place the delay/reverb in the amp’s effects loop.

Use a boost or 2 to cut the bass into preamp and during the tone stack
Put a flat EQ pedal in the loop and adjust the clean rounded bass to taste by boosting the bass back in.
I tune down to E/drop D1 so instead use a Behringer BEQ700 after my Line 6 Über Metal to really put some meaty low end back in after mids and trebles are distorted.

Thank god for this video. I was wondering what that FX button on my Mesas footswitch was for

Hi man. Just one thing. According to the Mesa Boogie website, the Dual and Triple Rectifier Multiwatt heads has a SERIES Fx Loop. The Dual and Triple Rectifiers made between 2000-2009 has a PARALLEL Fx Loop.

Does anyone know if the newer multi watts have a clean fx loop with no tone suck at low volumes? I know the parralels have issues but curious if the newer multi watts color the tone at all.

How would you hook up a digitech rp1000 through the effects loop?

Hi men, can I put the Boss noisegate in the effects loop of the rectifier ? Also I want to conect the guitar in a Maxon and the Maxon in the input of the rectifier? This will work? Can I do this to get better results instead of using the noisegate in front of the amp? Thank you!

I have an older Mesa F100 with a parallel loop and had to mod it into a a series loop. The parallel loop on that amp was useless and I can't for the life of me figure out why Mesa would put it in their amps. The mod was super simple just had to desolder 3 wires from the mix pot in the back and solder 2 of them together. There's lots of videos on youtube showing how to do it.

The Mesa you have there is a Multiwatt, which has a serial fx loop. The old 3 channel had the parallel fx loop with a send and a mix.

Same amp I own. 2003 triple rec with the dreaded parallel fx loop. The amp is a very fussy amp to get great sounds out of, simply because how the fx loop basically runs the entire sound potential of the amp... Even with no fx running in it

How do I shift from an overdriven amp to clean channel especialy when using reverbs for clean channels? Im a new to fxloop . Because guitarist uses ts9 to boost their amp for metal . Thank you

Ok, say i wanted to use the effects send out to my interface, but i still actually needed the effects loop for my eq and delay and whatnot. How would I go about this? Would i use an ABY box, or since i am not using the power amp at all, would i just put those effects between the effects send and the interface? Sorry if this is a noobish question, its been bugging me.

Hi dude, I recently bought a new PRS Tremonti Cusom SE. It's strung with a set of 9's but I wanna be able to play the Ernie Ball Not Even Slinky 12's on it. What kind of changes do I need to make in order to accommodate a heavier gauge like that?

The send/return puzzle, I just can't get. Just can't not think of the song 'Return to Sender' when I see the socket labels. And it's not helping.
Btw, there is a general attitude on this topic, of 'there isn't a right or wrong' but there is isn't there? It would be handy if there were a list of pedals best in front/pedals best in loop, as per the big guitar misters.

Delay, chorus, eq can be used in loop. Boosters, noise suppressor, tuners, Wahs best to be used on front. Eq can also be used on front but in loop it has a more dramatic effect.
      Effect loop is quite simple;
You drive a signal that places it in the preamp section, eventually the sound is amplified in the powersection thus can improve overal sound.
Just connect 1 cable from send and 1 cable from return and hook it to the designated inputs on your pedal. In case you have 2 pedals in loop then you connect both pedals with patch cable together. Cable from send in first pedal, cable return in 2d.
The send level is how much of your original signal or volume is driven from the preamp to powersection. Just set it at noon. Bonus is that when you have a master & output on your amp you can drive your amp hotter by increasing master though decreasing output (overall volume ). Lower the Master to clean up the sound (more bite, definition). Best to play with the sendlevel, master and output depending on desired overall volume (at home-rehearsel-gig). The mixlevel is how much effect do you want to blend in with the existing level. Also here, put it on noon level. For subtle effect of your pedals in loop decrease it.
I have also experimented with this on my Mesa DR with great results.
Gaining full potential with bedroom level volumes.
      Check my vids.
      Cheers and goodluck!
