I just got my engraver, still setting up the location in my house, and you videos have just filled me with ideas!! Thank you so much for sharing these tips. Can't wait to get burnin'!! LOL
This has been SOOO helpful, I have a ton of artwork that I've made on paper that I want to burn on different surfaces and this is the first video I've seen that shows how to do it on canvas and with color. Thank you!
I like that you let the paint dry on it's own terms, it's made to do that and some sheens, lusters, colors just don't develop as well if you rush it. Very nice.
Dude! Love the vid and thanks for the idea. Never thought about using canvas. This just opened up a whole world of possibilities. Guess I'll be spending time at hobby lobby tomorrow to give this a shot.
Thank you. Just unboxed my D1 a week ago. Your instruction was super solid and I'm now on my way to having my first completed "hero" piece done. Seriously great instructions!!!!!
If you resize the image after ImagR you wont get 1 pixel-line per line as it will be too many pixel-lines for the size. Resize in ImagR instead and it will work as intended (higher quality).
Very handy tutorial. Got this saved to my Personal Laser Playlist- just gotta get some spray-paint and I'll be ready to experiment- really looking forward to it!
I have canvases sitting around from the "poured acrylic" painting phase I never quite got started with after buying the stuff. LOL. So, this, I can do. Awesome.
Here I can only make the orange appear! If I lower the power of the laser, it becomes very difficult to see the image! If I increase it, only the orange is left and the hottest parts the laser ends up piercing the screen. What am I doing wrong?
Your laser content is really great. I just got my Ready2Laser 7 watt diode laser. It's enclosed and I'm working on getting it vented outside. I haven't done much with it yet but I can definitely see me trying some tiles. I may try your system on some painted wood too.
Great job. Awesome technique. One thing I do when I hang light weight items like that, i use push pins in the wall. Leaves a smaller hole that can be covered up the next time the wall is painted.
Get a two part epoxy coating mix and pour it over the top about 1/16 thick.. fills the canvas grains and creates a smooth deep colored artwork. Try it... you'll like it... Make sure you level it first.
I'm very much impressed! Have you done more colors? For example, like a colorful Hawaiian sunset or A beautiful scene of Tropical fishes in the ocean?. It's probably possible but much more work is required eh? You did a great job of opening the door for me on Laser Art. Mahalo!
I just test every time. You just never know when a paint is going to be different or what colors you want. So for me it's easier to paint the colors I'm going to use in the order. I'm going to use them and then do a quick test.
1. It is not easy man 😅 Maybe it is easy for you 2. The whole process takes too much time. So it seems not viable. 3. The costs. So the price of the end product will be high due the costs. So with these costs how can one sell this great end product? 4. This could be an awesome hobby.
Hey Jim, I know this video has been out for a while, but I just got my laser engraver in November. Ortur laser master 3 10w. I painted up a canvas, and made a tear area on a second one to find the magic number. I actually had to stop the test and drop the max power down even lower, and it turned out to be 3.5% max power. Do you remember if you had to go that low on canvases? I know your ceramic tiles are around 15% from your other video, so I thought this was really really low for some reason.
hello! great ideas u have. can u tell what did you choose regarding the type of material on ur laser? basswood, bamboo, leather, acrylic, etc.? thank you!
It is fantastic. I keep watching over and over again. I have learned that laser reacts with zinc oxide that is in the paint to produce black color. I wonder how you get these astonishing colors. I appreciate your kind reply.
Great stuff. But I have to ask; where did you get that FM radio voice? I always feel like you are getting ready to start DJing the Rock and Roll Top 40. You could be the next Kasey Kasem.
Where does the yellow of the fire come from? I see a white canvas, then orange spray, red then black. Is the yellow fire and whip coming from a mix of colours? Awesome work by the way!
I have no idea what you just did, but, I love it. This was in my recommended, so, I watched. I'm sure I'll never do what you do, but, your video was very enjoyable. 😁👍🏻❤

This maybe a newbie question but. When doing colors how do you determine the order to apply the colors or does it matter. Great channel and I’ve learned a lot in a short time. Thank you
Trying my hardest to find your “magic numbers” video that helps with aligning! A link to that would be awesome. I’m a newbie and trying to soak up all the info I can!
Amazing tutorial, amazing work there. You helped me a lot putting my things together man. I just need to ask how the tile compares to canvas and how is it possible the settings to be the same considering the materials which are they made from? Is it something with the paint coating?
Dude! Your videos on the lasers are inspiring and so fun to watch. My laser is on its way from China and I can't wait for it to get here and get started on some stuff! Git Some Ye-Haw!
Man, thank you for your video!! I’m new to engraving, rocking an XTool D1 and I tried your white canvas technique. Turned out pretty good for my first time! Thanks again!!
Just found your channel. So neat and it’s convinced me a laser cutter engraver is how I’m going to revive a dead 3D printer (3-4mm bed bow no replacement parts, already crappy) I have several questions, feel free to answer only some of them 1. What should I google to get more info on this technique 2. Is there a limit to how many different colors you can use 3. Is there a power floor/ceiling this works with? I’m thinking of getting an L cheapo mk7 which has a lot more power? 4. Have you found any medium(paint or surface) this won’t work on? Subscribed! Great work!
Hi! I get a lot of my info from the facebook groups I am in. I would find some of those to start! You can do as many colors as you want in and fashion that you want. So they don't have to be overlapped, the colors could be next to each other too! This should work with any diode laser, but you may have to adjust power and speed. Also, maybe several passes may need to be used.
I am totally new to the world of laser engraving and stumbled across your video doing some research on what can be done. I have an Ortur 20W headed my way and your video is exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking to do. Absolute golden example!
Thank u so much for this video! U explain thing so well and very thorough. I did have one ?. When working with paint while burning; does it get all over your laser? If so, how do u clean it? Sorry for any dumb questions, lol I’m a newby here and literally just got my diode laser today and haven’t even set it up yet! :)

I have 3 different clear coats in my garage and they all bubble a lot and don't coat evenly. Got the one you recommended in this video today and it's amazing.
I really enjoy your videos. I have a 70w COO and I'm trying to tiles and canvas but I'm having trouble getting the colors under the black to come thru. They seem to blend with the black. Any ideas?
Thanks for sharing. I am totally new to this, I have a Neje 2 2S /Max and I am wondering about the settings in both ImagR (material) and Lightburn on a painted piece of plywood and transfer of a photo?
Hi, I watch your amazing videos and learn so much about working with my ORTUR OLM PRO S2 laser. I have this video and I want to ask you about the canvas and the colorful spray. What type of canvas do you use and what color spray do you use? As I already understood, these two materials are very flammable and also the paint spray is very toxic if burned or heated. Should you use cotton or synthetic canvas? I will appreciate your answers. Thanks a lot for all of your great videos.
I REALLY need your alignment video. My laser is a shit show.....I have to run several tests before burning as to not waste material. I think theres a bug in LB, just doesnt seem right.
Very cool! A spot in the middle of my 4K TV (after burning through a flame resistant screen) is the only thing I've burned with my 3 watt RGB projectors. I'll try this instead. Looks far more rewarding. 🙂
Thank you! At the slow speed I went it took about 5 hours. You could speed it up and turn up the power to go faster, but do some testing before you do that. Thanks for watching!
This video is atleast a couple years old and I'm hoping it's not too late to receive a response to my question. I have a sculpfun Diode and ive only done a handful of projects..I want to do the multi colored canvas images and I have attempted/practice on a screw up canvas that I painted over with black(but it was covered in acrylic paint, not spray paint) first mistake for the practice one was perhaps acrylic paint over probably too thick. Next my speeds and powers too much or not enough, then there was the black residue that built up in the laser protective cylindrical attachment?? Which I do clean carefully..but question is am I weakening the laser by burning through paint?
Hi Jim, I really enjoy your videos. I have a question. i Have a Laser Master Pro 2 and use Lightburn. When you set your power to 50% my machine does not show any engraving so I set my power to 90% to engrave. Does the laser lose power over time with extended use? My machine is just over 9 months old or am I doing something wrong?
I know this is a few weeks late and will get buried, but does doing this put off fumes from burning the paint? I know on lots of materials you need ventilation, how bout this? been thinking about getting the ortur as it seems to be the best quality for price right now, but I don't have a garage or a ventilated area to use it, unless I sit it out on my balcony while it's in operation. Also would you need the 20w version or would the lower watt versions still work this well?
Hey! I would always recommend ventilation for a laser. Burning anything puts out fumes and breathing them isn't good for you. Also, if you just wanted to do things like this and not worry about cutting, the lower watt versions would be fine!
@@TheEdgeofTech Thanks for the reply and the info! I'm debating if saving up the extra $100 for the 20w vs 7w is worth it. I'm thinking yes. I was originally planning on using it to make layered shadowbox designs with paper or very thin wood/plastic/acrylic. I just happened to see this video and think it's an awesome concept!
I know this is an older video as I've been exploring the world of laser cutting/engraving just this week. I thought this is one of the coolest ideas to get different colors into a laser engraved item. I'm a photography guy so obviously familiar with canvas. Other popular media options for mounting photographs are acrylic and metal. Have you tried painting layers of color into either acrylic or metal and them laser engrave an image? I also think with acrylic you could start with a different color and also use backlighting with translucent acrylic depending on the paint. Would be interesting to see if anyone has tried this.
You think this would work on 1/4" acrylic for keychains ? I bought some colored acrylic from trotec in Canada for $35 for one sheet... outrageous. Im thinking of getting some white acrylic and painting first with white then purple then doing this to make the white burn through ..any thoughts mate, Thanks great vid ..
I recently picked up the same laser I cant seem to get it to not 'wobble' some straight lines. I found some slack in one of the belts and tightened that up which helped, but theres still some.
If Imag-R can output to .SVGs then this can be used with digital cutters / plotters like the Brother Scan N Cut, Cricut, silhouette. Not for use with laser diodes but for their other tools like cutting, engraving, paper piercing, embossing/debossing, foiling, machine drawing (plotter feature), etc.
Anymore videos planned bro, coz they are epic and yours are the most informative. Looking forward to the next one. You'll really help me on my amateur journey bro
What would the settings be for glowforge since I can't use lightburn? I was gifted a glowforge to start a business, had I known i would've gone with a different laser
Your laserhead seems to be very high above the material, is that how is it supposed to be or is it ok to use the focus tool that comes with the machine?
Would it be possible to do some work on glass and plexiglass. I have a 40watt twotrees diode laser. I can't get it to etch properly. I do have lightburn as well.
Jim, I dont understand how Gimp knows how to separate each colour layer, and how to regulate the power applied to each layer. How does it figure out the order of the colours? I suppose it makes a big difference to the order of the colours when they are applied, but that information doesnt seem to have been explained by anyone so far. Can you explain how this process works?
thanks fr the video after you have done engraved, If I am correct I saw 3 colors on the tile 'orange, red, black' am I correct? can you have more than 3 colors, for example, I want a blue color for the 4 layers, will the result show 4 colors? I am new to this and want to learn. Also, I can start with a different color tile instead of white? thanks
Would you mind sharing the exact paints you're using? (Even other colors not used in this vid) Links would be awesome to the ones you found work best! Thanks for the awesome video!
Well done video. Last one I watched (band logo on tile) I was muttering about using a water based top coat to stop the reaction and boom here it is. Great change. Question that’s been asked but not answer a few times. Burn time on the 10x10 canvas?

I'm looking to get ones if these lasers. What power would be best to get, 15w or the 20W one? I'd want to do tiles and wood ideally. Thanks
Either one will do those things. I would do it based on your budget!
I bought some colored acrylic from trotec in Canada for $35 for one sheet... outrageous. Im thinking of getting some white acrylic and painting first with white then purple then doing this to make the white burn through ..any thoughts mate, Thanks
great vid ..
Thanks man!! Of course there are more coming!
What would the settings be for glowforge since I can't use lightburn? I was gifted a glowforge to start a business, had I known i would've gone with a different laser
I'm not sure what they would be for glowforge but with some trial and air he could easily dial it in.
Is the 1200/21 a good setting to start with?
Thank you
Ed
Great tutorial but just 1 quick question, can you give me the link to the video where you engraved this onto a tile.
I have a K40 with an updated board to run Lightburn. I enjoy your videos! So what would the #'s be on a k40
To be honest I'm not sure either. But there is a group on Facebook and the owners of that plug-in run it. They could answer it
can we see the laser etching the painting please? I'm curious how much smoke is made and it's always just a fun watch material
thanks fr the video after you have done engraved, If I am correct I saw 3 colors on the tile 'orange, red, black' am I correct? can you have more than 3 colors, for example, I want a blue color for the 4 layers, will the result show 4 colors? I am new to this and want to learn. Also, I can start with a different color tile instead of white? thanks
Does it have to be spray paint or can you spray acrylic paint using an airbrush to do this?
Great video. Do you have a sample of the image that you used that you can share for us to practice on?
I don't, but you can find it on Google 🙂
@@TheEdgeofTech 😂 lol
How long did it take to do the tile and how many different layers of paint can you possibly do
I’m using a two trees tts-55. What laser power should I use? I don’t want to accidentally burn too deep. Also I’m using lasergrbl.
Would you mind sharing the exact paints you're using? (Even other colors not used in this vid) Links would be awesome to the ones you found work best! Thanks for the awesome video!
This is amazing! How do you know what colors to paint? And what order? Can't seem to find a tutorial.
Well done video. Last one I watched (band logo on tile) I was muttering about using a water based top coat to stop the reaction and boom here it is. Great change.
Question that’s been asked but not answer a few times. Burn time on the 10x10 canvas?
Hello. Can you paint on acrylic paint with a brush rather than using spray paint?
