  • Christopher Nolan brought the caped crusader back from the depths of bat-nipple hell with Batman Begins. Though it was a landmark for the progression of comic book films upon release, has Batman's origin story aged well?

    The first Batman movie that actually focused on the Batman and did it in serious way. Because all the previous entries always focused on the villains and never really spent much time on his origins.

    @Cody at 48 wife and I are old enough to remember the Batman craze the Keaton and Burton film did. An he (Keaton) will always be our 3rd favorite Batman as a result. However these films are so good that Batman is not the before Nolan and after Nolan...... Only Conroy and the animated Batman has done Batman better in both the animated series, the JLA, and most of the DCU Animation films.... Thank you for doing this series and taking the time your quality videos take to upload, edit, script and upload. Have a good weekend Sir and best wishes to you an your family from ours.

    I can't believe Cody said what I've always wanted to say.
    "As much as the trilogy is good, I want the movie to be focused on Batman & not entirely on Joker & Bane,
    Batman Begins is clearly the Batman movie we got & obviously the suit is the best in the movie & frankly I liked the raspy voice here
    compared to the sequels, when Batman gets introduced 1 hr into the movie & then saves Rachel outside the metro & talk to Rachel, that's the raspy voice i liked the most!

    This is my favorite from the 3. It's not a bloated as part 2 and 3. My only negative is Rachel Dawes character/actress. I don't feel that he killed Ra's, he didn't start that train, or prevent it from being able to be stopped. He also didn't cripple Ra's to prevent him from getting off the train. All he did, was prevent the train from making it to it's location in case Batman couldn't stop Ra's. Now i'll admit he did kill Ducard/NInja's in the palace, because that was totally his fault that, that palace blew up and that column fell on ducard because of the explosion he caused and the countless of Ninja's that burned and died in the fire.

    As much as i love The Joker and TDK, if i'm being honest with myself, this is my favourite Batman movie. First movie to make me care and become invested in Bruce/Batman. The cast in great, the music, the cinematography, the atmosphere, love it. There are things I dont like but they don't affect my enjoyment of the movie. Batman's first enounter with Scarecrow is one of my absolute favourite scenes in the trilogy, just love the whole look and tone of that scene.

    Batman Begins is the best of the Nolan trilogy because it feels the most like a Batman movie. He didn't have the over the top voice. Gotham City actually looked like Gotham City and not Chicago. It had the narrows which really represented Gotham City. He had the best suit of the three movies. He used his cape to glide across the city. It was a Batman movie.
    I watched it recently and loved it. I started watching The Dark Knight and couldn't finish the movie.

    Fantastic review Cody, the Postman delivers another top notch review the Dark Knight Trilogy are my favourite Batman films & what a amazing film this is which is often overlooked because of the popularity of The Dark Knight.
    Epic, cast, great character arcs, superb music score which always gives me goosebumps all combine to make a outstanding Batman movie.
    Yeah the Bale voice as Batman it cringe at times you'd think Mr Fox given him a voice modulator but Bale performance is outstanding & made Batman bad ass again, my only gripes with this film were Scarecrow after a great build up simply disappears during the third act & the fight scenes which are very erratically edited & fast cut which made it difficult to see what was actually going on, if this film had the fight scenes like the warehouse takedown from BvS this would be a flawless even masterpiece.
    Still a outstanding movie though.

    To me this is the best one of the three, Dark Knight gets boring at times being a bit longer than needed and Rises feels a bit unconvincing everyone saying how big is Bane, it’s not that big, that kicks me out of the movie

  • @ChuckM0503

    Probably the best of the Nolan Batman movies. I know many will say TDK, but I think as an actual Batman movie BB is the best overall. It had the best balance of the grounded, serious approach Nolan was going for while also still feeling like a comic book movie. TDK/TDKR are great movies, but I think they did lose a bit of charm that I think was in BB.

    • @h.b.smith_writer
      @h.b.smith_writer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't feel that the sequels lost charm. The Dark Knight wasn't trying to have the same look as Begins, and Dark Knight Rises elevated Gotham into an apocalyptic landscape during Bane's revolution. There's a lot of character to it.

    Great review. Definitely my favorite comic book movie of all time. The way I see the Ra's Al Ghul death scene is that Ra's is responsible for the entire train situation himself. It's kind of like "you made your bed, you get to sleep on it." Not to mention, the League of Shadows is so secret, no one even knows what they are or who Ra's is. So even if saved from the train, he wouldn't get any punishment from the law anyways (not that it has anything to do with Batman's decision). Overall, I think it was the best end for the man.

    • @h.b.smith_writer
      @h.b.smith_writer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. It also plays into his decision to try not to kill Joker in TDK, and how it comes back to affect him Rises with Bane and Talia carrying out his mission, making him figuratively immortal.

  • @h.b.smith_writer
    @h.b.smith_writer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review Cody! I will say though that while Begins is the most comic book feeling of the series I actually like The Dark Knight Rises the best. Christian Bale was still pretty buff in the sequels though they had to change the suit to be more tactical and so that it didn't make Bale overheat, to which I don't mind at all. I never minded his Batman voice either. I also loved Gotham City in the sequels and how they went for something different, making it feel evolving with Batman's presence; it's noir and realistic feeling in TDK and in TDKR how it turns from an ideal metropolis to an apocalyptic, revolutionary wasteland (I think the one in the latter might be underrated). I love Rachel Dawes as a character and never understood the fan gripes over her character (no Bruce didn't quit being Batman because of her), but I will say that I liked Maggie's the best. I also understood Ra's al Ghul's death because of how he put himself in the situation of destroying the train controls, and if he saved Ra's would he be starting it all over again from the first time he saved him? There's some moral ambiguity there, and it impacts his arc in the sequels; especially with Ra's almost winning through Bane and Talia.

    I love this movie; remember seeing it in the theaters back in the day. I love that Nolan incorporates his signature non-linear storytelling a little bit, and it’s very well-cast, I love Bale as Wayne/Batman, Freeman, and Michael Caine. And I will always defend Katie Holmes to my death, her character is so great. I love that he is born from fear, and uses it against his enemies. There is also some well-placed humor here. Yes, I do wish they use Scarecrow more, and the Batman costume could be better. I understand the complaints about his voice, and I think sometimes it’s a bit forced. This movie definitely fails when it breaks Batman’s “one rule” by throwing explosives at cop cars in a chase that might have killed a few...and sure, he refuses to execute one guy for the League of Shadows, but then he blows up a whole monastery full of men! Overall, I go back and forth sometimes between whether I prefer this or The Dark Knight: this is a great origin story, no nipples required!

    My personal favorite of the Nolan Batman trilogy. I like all three, but this one just feels right in so many ways. I feel like so many people hush over The Dark Knight so much that this one often gets overshadowed. To me this one felt the most Batman of the three.
    It has cool atmosphere, I love the training sequences and Bruce putting everything together (suit, cave, Tumbler). Ra’s was a good villain to go with and not the typical choice. Scarecrow was also a good secondary villain. I like the Batsuit best in this one. The Tumbler is badass.
    Just a really damn good movie. Not saying the other two aren’t good, but looking back on them, and especially The Dark Knight I feel like I have to be in the right mood. Batman Begins is endlessly rewatchable to me.

    This is the only one of the Nolan Batman films I didn’t see in theaters; as you say, it felt very different from comic-book movies at the time.
    You’re right in that this one has more of a comic-book look than the subsequent entries; it seemed as though, with each successive entry, Nolan he slowly stepped away from that. That made the action sequences better with each new film (though maybe he just got better or more comfortable filming such scenes), but it also made the world a little more generic.
    I’d probably put this a close second in the Dark Knight trilogy, but it is perhaps the most cohesive in terms of its tone & style - it lack the rather jarring transitions that sometimes mar the others - and, although all three films are a little too self-serious, that quality probably bothers me the least in this one.

  • @derajnitram1882
    @derajnitram1882 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The more I watch this movie the more I like it and I can say that this is my favorite movie in the trilogy. Everything just works for me the Batsuit is awesome, my personal favorite, the story is engaging throughout, and Gotham city actually feels like a character, with amazing set design, unlike the sequels were it's just a city. The Dark Knight is a great followup building off the strong foundation that is this movie. As much as I love TDK the recasting of Rachel, the multiple subplots, and plot convenience do comprise the film somewhat. Batman Begins is just an all around great origin movie, and set the stage for everything after.
    On a side note while I do understand why people take issue with Batman not saving Ra's, I personally took Batman's code at least as the Nolan version goes that he will not kill intentionally, or maliciously by his own hand. Ra's disabled the train controls, which then leads to his fate, which Batman does leave him to face. It's certainly up for debate, but Batman saying "I won't kill you, but I don't have to save you" illustrates his refusal to outright kill, but doesn't behold him to never allow someone from being killed. It's debatable I know, but it wasn't ever as egregious as Tim Burton's Batman movies, or Zack Synder's.

    To Nolan's credit, he did give life to the Batman movies after what Batman and Robin did to it. I don't hate Batman and Robin it's one of those movies that you like to watch because of how bad it was but it destroyed Batman being on the silver screens for a while. So hats off to Nolan.

    I’ve always felt like out of the trilogy, Begins is the one the fandom likes to pretend isn’t as good; simply because there wasn’t a Heath Ledger to die in the process making it. I mentioned it in the dark knight review but Katie Holmes was just too young to be a believable attorney. Not her presence or intelligence, but as an attorney myself, she would have barely finished to bar exam. She’s have no influence at that point so it just felt out of place.

Batman simply let him die a death of his own machinations by refusing to interfere in Ras' martyrdom. The end, man. @@Blast2224 Not exactly. Scarecrow couldn't get ahold of any fear toxin after the antidote was made. In The Dark Knight he used a different kind of drug on teenagers and criminals which makes sense. In Rises he becomes a political figure during Bane's reign of terror, it's great. He has a tatered coat that's like a Scarecrow, and it's a callback to in Begins where he was first seen mocking the legal system.

      @h.b.smith_writer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not exactly. Ra's al Ghul was responsible for being on the monorail and destroying the controls in the belief that Batman was trying to stop the train. Batman threw The Joker off of the building himself. In the first case, Ra's put himself in the situation which resulted in his death, whereas in the second case, had Batman not saved the Joker, he would be solely responsible for murdering him. Doing so would have been a violation of his one rule. It is also possible that Batman was trying to prove to the Joker that he was incorruptible. Batman's duties don't ensure that death or him killing will never happen, just that if he does it's on accident or out of necessity.
