@@jokhard8137 Matt gives a lot of leeway to his players. But yea, that was one of the few times I felt a little awkward listening to that. Matt wasn't going to let that go. It's not often that Matt has to throw his weight as a DM around. But yea, if Travis hadn't backed down Matt was going to tell Travis that he was crossing a line in that moment.
You've gotta love that everyone knows Laura so well that they immediately fear for Travis when he says he's not going to listen to her instructions.

@@vaalnailo5789 From what it looks like it was Travis that goofed here because it looks like Laura send him a message and he wrongly read is at "cast blessing" instead of "Blessing of the trickster", which are two very different things. So I think this was completely acceptable on Matt's part for ruling the way he did.
And after Lauras call that cleared everything up he allowed the change to "Blessing of the trickster" and the reinstating of the bonus from pass without a trace. So I think everything is fine here.

Technical it is a cat. He changed him back when they where in (not going to spell this right) Bazoxion (the town on the edge of the Barbed Fields) as he and Nott were taking the first watch. During the time she was first freaking out that she had lost her magic flask.

That's one of those moments with the expression that Taliesin has on his face that makes me think Cadeucus getting mad would be absolutely terrifying. He's always so quiet and thoughtful, but if Cadeucus ever full-on raged I think I'd poo a bit.

- Three yellow eyes looking at Fjord instead of just one
- Very brief flash of Veth drowning at the start of Nott's introduction
- Old animation had the DM summoning The Gentleman, Pumat Sol, and the Ruby of the Sea, their Tortle friend, and the Ookatoa enthusiast pirate lady.

I know Spirit Guardians was able to deliver the finishing blow only because Yasha's swipes and Fjord's Armor of Aghatys had already done most of the work, but the image of Caduceus crossing the mist accompanied with an amry of dragonflies and beetles that immediately gangs on the doppelgangers and eat them from inside and immediately after finishing his own copy before ending it with a Bond One-Liner is so freaking badass.

Matt is much more dungeon crawly in this campaign than he was in the last one. Its a welcome change. The latter half of the last campaign, while a great story, kinda devolved into teleport to ballpark area of boss, use their uber high levels to find the boss and fight a few things along the way.

Can we just take a moment to aprecciate the roper encounter?
Coming up with a encounter that has additional threats aside from the creature itself is really difficult. There's just so much going on in this seemingly simple fight, a hella deep chasm with a horrendous monster on its botton, ghostly voices that will try and control you if you makes noises, a bridge with creaky chains to hold onto, a roper 30 feet up which can just yeet 4 of them off the bridge and into the chasm...
It just sums up to a complex, scary fight that forces your players to be creative so that they stay alive.

@@TommyTheCat83 Indeed you're right, but making them believe the monster in the chasm was gargantuan mess which will absorb everything that falls into it made a much better show than a hack n slash style 'let's just jump and get rid of it' would have been

No matter how many times I see this animated intro it never fails to impress me. It also never fails to send a shudder down my spine when it pans out to show Mollys cloak. It's all just so well done.

Looking back at this episode, I really love how Matt incorporates both monsters and surroundings into an encounter. Like, its so easy to throw a Gibbering Mouther into a dark room and just have the players fight it and it still would be scary, but to have it below, unseen but not unheard? To make it deadly without having to make a single attack? Amazing, love it.
Fr this episode has one of the best encounters in this season maybe even the entire show
The players also added to the encounter. Most players would have simply gone down there via fly or feather fall, killed it, then went back up.
@@babaalwayl5884 I suspect that wasn't *just* a single Gibbering Mouther. From the way it was described, the entire chasm was filled with them. From the way Matt described it I think it was reasonable (and probably correct) for the Party to assume they couldn't just kill them all. Same as with the zombies in the 'heart' room and the monsters in the 'mirror' room; these weren't puzzles they could solve simply by killing things.

Honestly, not a totally terrible idea. It would require good rolls, but it would avoid the problem of fighting masses of undead.
@@FallstarFL it was a huge stretch of the use of the items and spells; that would also negate a large part of the threat that the arc covers. That feels like trying to win the game rather than play it. You already have the sunlight or sunburst spell to deal with vampires (plus many more spells for utility in dealing with them) theres no reason to give or let them make an item that does any significant ramping to either of those IMO.

I’m so glad Matt didn’t punish them for Travis’ pass without a trace mistake 😂 That spell is so clutch and that would have been pretty bad. Though I wish Nott remembered he has his fancy cloak that have advantage on stealth.
@@Matisyahuwu There is a big difference between making a tactical mistake with your own character vs not understanding the mechanics of a character you are only borrowing. Especially when its two different abilities with similar names. Everyone should get a few passes when it comes to controlling a new character.

What had me dying laughing about this the most is that is Travis is the number one person who wants to kick every hornet's nest! That was amazing.
I know he was mostly joking, but in all seriousness that was excellent roleplay on Sam's part. Nott is going through withdrawals, has been pretty hesitant about being the groups scout even when she's drunk, and was on a bridge hanging over an eldritch monstrosity. Panicking was absolutely in character for her in that moment.

Someone she trusts has plotted to deny her the thing she's jonesing hard for. Severe alcoholics who quite cold turkey *can actually die*. Internally, she's basically at her worst right now. Scouting the bridge? Hell no.
Yeah and Fjord aggressively forces her to scout ahead anyways. After buying an expensive bottle in front of her, and keeping it for himself. I can understand how some of them think they're helping Nott with a problem, but it's kinda messed up how some of them are treating her here. It feels like Scanlan all over again

What great dungeon design by Matt Mercer combining two monsters and a bridge that would normally not be a challenge to the Mighty Nein in the right situation to create a deadly encounter. Amazing.
as a fellow DM who likes to homebrew my own stuff can I just say that this dungeon is some grade A, prime cut, genuine quality, awesomeness. This is one of the coolest dungeon's I've ever seen

It is so fascinating watching Taliesen shift between his roleplaying mode and his hardcore mode. One moment he is a chilled cow and the next he is giving of a death stare that would make a Beholder envious.

His "misunderstood" and "forgotten" rules get annoying quickly. Completely ignoring the line between asking for clarification, and pushing the DM for a hack.
The death stare is a turn-on.
@@kitten-inside Yeah, he obviously knows what the rules are, but then he's always asking for more time on his turns (despite claiming more than once that he has 3 turns planned out in advance), and always trying to cast multiple leveled spells in a turn. He also always shouts "BANE" or "BLESS" even if it doesn't apply (because he "forgets" who he applied them to), just to get an additional edge in combat that isn't actually allowed.
This is why I love the owl form for find familiar. Darkvision, a positive perception bonus and advantage on hearing and sight, which is most perception checks a familiar will be making.
Yeah owl is the Chad familiar. I would say bat is the Tyrone though. Blindsight for 60 feet is pretty useful especially if you just set it on your head.
Owl feels a bit try hard though. Like, obviously it's the best by a large margin, but all good characters have flaws.
Narratively speaking, I love familiars that are useful... but not perfect.
Take the humble Crab. It has Blindsight to 30 feet (useful!) ...but has minimal perception, stealth, and intelligence. So you end up having this faithful, awkward little crab who is adorable in how clumsy he is. Not useless though, Blindsight is no joke.
Or for example, a Lizard. Negative stat bonuses to just about everything, and really slow movement speed. But hey, it has Darkvision! So you have derpy lizard who's probably crosseyed, but it's an adorable little goofball and lets you have Darkvision!
...then you have the Min/Maxers all taking Owl everytime, and spamming it's fly-by-Help action every single round of combat. Effective? Yes, but it gets really boring fast, especially when every wizard in 5e always takes the exact same familiar...
@@trapical Personal take on it? The familiars need better balance. It shouldn't have to be a matter of everyone choosing one "OP" familiar because it is in a whole different league than all the others OR choosing a familiar with less functionality so you can have some unique RP options. The familiars should all have unique strengths and weaknesses. And cats should, without a doubt, get darkvision...

@@DigitalHodgePodge completely agree. Lizards should get natural camouflage and the ability to walk up walls like spiders. Plus they’re small. Owl should only get positive perception bonuses at night but have to suffer light sensitivity like drow do. Also all nocturnal familiars should have to make checks at disadvantage during daytime and in the light. Only seems fair.
It just occurred to me that if Caduceus disguised self as his family members Jester could check on them.
Recurvess Yeah they really don’t use illusion magic to its fullest potential. There are so many scenes where they are describing someone to an NPC when they could just as easily disguise self into that person for reference. It is what they should have done when trying to confirm if the Gentleman was Jester’s father with the Ruby.

This may be my favorite episode ever. Matt did such an amazing job concocting this adventure. The bridge had me in so much suspense. The mirrors were terrifying.
This entire dungeon is one of my favorites of the across three campaigns. I love when he goes all out with horror and being as unsettling as possible.
Now I want a one shot of the cast stopping Matt using dark magic to create Critical Role Land.

Oh man, Caleb feels slightly awkward around Nott since she already has met and reunited with her family. I get it. Once she gets her original form back and comes back to where she once belonged, she might never return. Caleb had been with her for a long time, and he most probably treated her as the closest family he's got besides the rest of the Nein. He seems to be worried that he'll lose somebody he cares about again, and that he'll have no power to stop it.
