Oh no, slugs are devastating! Maybe you can repel them with a sharp mulch (or sharp dried egg shells) around the plant, or use a garlic drench.

Is it suitable to sow in winter?
Swiss chard is a cold hardy plant and tolerates frost; however, plants will be killed by temperatures below 15 F (-9 C). If you prefer growing Swiss chard through the winter, start indoors 4 weeks before transplanting. For direct sowing, get your seeds into the ground when the soil is at least 50F (10C), or a month prior to the first fall frost.

Hi once again love your videos I’m close to starting my vegetable garden here in Florida. Loved the advice about the carrots I’ll be sure to give an update, but I was wondering when your putting them in the seed starting trays do I need to keep them indoors or can I keep them in the greenhouse outside? Also do they need temp regulation or just outside temp is fine.
Hi there. You can keep seed tray inside at room temperature. As soon as the seeds pop out, move them outside. Swiss chard is also a cool weather crop and can be grown in mild winters. Only if night temperature drops below 45-50F, you can bring them inside at night. Otherwise they can stay outside. Hope this helps and happy growing!🌱😊
my seedlings are a bit leggy, used a heat mat and grow lights but maybe should have just let them sprout with sunlight, grow slower but stronger
Heat mat helps with the germination but leggy seedings are mainly due to lack of light. A sunny widow sill shelf works better than many grow lights. Thanks for visiting.
I love the videos. I notice you always thin to one plant. Do you use the other plant elsewhere?
I have a limited garden space to grow vegetables so cannot plant all my seedlings. I keep the healthies ones and compost the rest. A seed packet usually contains too many seeds so I usually sow extra for a better germination rates. In some cases that I have extra room to grow plants like flowers, I replant thinned seedlings to get more (check my video on Marigold for example). Next time plant them a bit deeper when transplanting in pots. Also it may be that they are not getting enough light. Hope you have a better results and thank you for your comment!

Hi mine are only 1 inch tall, it's getting cold so I'm not sure if I should keep indoors or plant outside in garden. I don't see true leaves yet. Should i plant in full sun or partial shade? Dallas Texas thank you 😊

I don't use grow lights. I keep seedlings in filtered sunlight, such as under beach umbrella or 70% shade cloth. And the grow bags are 15 gallon (15" wide). Hope you find these helpful and have great gardening season! 🤗

I ordered 7 gallon grow bags because that size will fit comfortably on my small patio. Another question - how many Swiss Chard plants should I plant in my 7 gallon grow bags. You know I wasn’t gonna let you off the hook without ONE more question😂

Hi! Depending on the plant and the weather, you will need to adjust the watering so that the soil is moist, but not soggy. Wait until top layer of the soil is dry and then water. Since I grow chard in cool weathers, for me it was about every 2-3 days. Hope this answers your question and thanks for visiting!

Is there something I can do when my Swiss chard seedlings fall over when they are still young seedlings. They fall over
You could plant them a bit deeper if they were leggy. But if already planted, You can add some soil and cover part of the stem. Normally this is not a problem and they will start growing straight up and produce leaves. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

why did mine look so small and weedy by comparison?? was it the potting compost? I didn't use coir n perlite. :-[
It is the soil which may have pathogens in it (not good), or seedlings are not getting enough light. Cannot tell exactly without seeing. Try a new batch in sterile seed mix. Thanks for visiting.
Also, as they are growing in day 30 and 40, do you add fertilizer like Miracle Gro or Fish Emulsion?
Sometimes yes. Specially if you see seedings are struggling to grow or the leaves are turning yellow, a low dose of fish emulsion is a great option. You can definitely use Miracle Gro all purpose plant food too if not-organic option are ok with you. Happy growing and thank you for getting in touch!
Can you use potting mix alone when you transplant the Swiss Chard to the grow bags? Or, in addition to the potting mix do you also add compost to the mix?

The sowing and seedling process are about same. However keep in mind that rhubarb spreads out and needs more room to grow (3-4 ft), specially that it is prennial and produces harvest for many years. It is also possible that you wait until next year for a decent harvest. Hope this helps and thank you for your comment!

Did you use a grow light and heat mat?
Grow lights no, but sometimes I use heat mat if it is too cold. You should be able to germinate the Swiss chard seeds without a heat mat indoors. Keep the newly sown seeds indoors until they germinate. As soon as they pop up, take them outside to 4-6 hours of morning sunlight. Stablished Swiss chard is a cold hardy plant and tolerates frost. But for seedlings, if the temperature drops below 40F, bring seedlings inside at nights. Otherwise you can keep them outside. Happy growing and thank you for getting in touch!
My Swiss plants germinated on April 14th so it’s one month now and they are no way as big as yours, still look like seedlings. Did you use fertilizer?
yes, sometimes I do. If you see they are struggling to grow, feed them with diluted fish fertilizer (1-2 Tbsp per gallon once or twice a week). If not, once you plant them in rich soil, they will recover quickly and start grow quicker. Hope this helps and happy growing!
For the seedings that is thinned out, can it be then put into it's own cell?
I usually don't do that and try to sow extra seeds if I want more plants. But if you are careful enough not to damage the roots, I think you may be able to pot them on. And you still can enjoy the thinned seedlings in your salad. Thank you for visiting!

Can I grow in india
Not sure how the weather is in your area but swiss card prefers cool and mild weather, though chard has some heat tolerance. So if the weather is on the cool side yes you can. Seeds germinate in soil temperatures from 40-100°F (5-38°C) with best at 85°F (30°C). Thank you for visiting.
What happens to the plant once you harvest? Do i just take it out and discard it or are the leaves growing back?
Plants left in soil will regrow leaves many times, as long as the weather is not hot. If hot, it will go to bolting and will flower. Thanks for visiting.
