    1. Vary fasting times
    2. Adding 24/48 hour fasting
    3. 3 food changes...good fats, good nature's carbs, clean proteins, get rid of toxins (keto snacks, fake sugars, plastics in foods)
    4. Open detox pathways...caster oil pacts, lymphatic scrubbing
    5. A 1-2 weeks no fasting break
Thank you so much for the info

I can't have gluten, dairy, soy etc. Still affects me. I do intermit fasting, if I feel my symptoms were bad 24hrs and I tried 48 hrs twice but this was the hardest.

I did OMAD for YEARS with no success. I kept doing it because I thought my body was just cleaning itself up before it released weight. I was wrong. I recently switched to low carb and do one (almost) 48-hour fast a week, along with semi-varied fasting during the week. Weight has been dropping like crazy. Eight pounds in two weeks. The energy this has given me has allowed my daily step count to reach numbers I didn't think were possible for me! To add a little more - I'm 48 years old. So it even works in the crazy hormonal stage of life. :)

#2 Fasting Longer - I’ve had a stubborn 15 lbs that would not come off, after fasting regularly 14-16 hrs a day. Once I went to 72 hours, the weight came off and reduced my weight set point so I easily dropped the weight. Now I’m careful to vary it up and add 1 or 2 non-fasting days because my weight dropped a few lbs more than I wanted it. I do 72 hrs about once a month, which may be a little too frequent. For reference, I’m 50 yo, I started at 153 lbs and am down to 135 lbs, 5’6” and perimenopausal. Best thing I ever did was to start IF. I’m a Dr. Mindy fan for life! 😊

@@DrMindyPelz Hello, Dr Mindy, while doing a 2 day or longer fast can you put lemon in the water?
It's a confusing topic online. Lemon's have carbs however, I have found a few articles and also Dr Berg's vids that state you can have a small amount 1/4 lemon and that does not throw you out of ketosis or break a fast. He suggest that lemons are good on a fast to prevent kidney stones with ketosis (not sure if I remembered his working correctly or not??)
What are your thoughts on lemons & long fasting no food?? 🍋🍋🍋
Also, in one of your new "short" vids you mentioned that you can eat a small amount of fat such as 1/2 avacado, nut butter or an egg to keep going on a fast if you have hunger but, dont want to break the fast. I watched one of your older vids and it stated these fats were good to break a fast. So my question is: Are these healthy fats ok to eat just to stop the hunger to continue on with the longer fast or will that break the fast and you have to start all over on your fast to achieve more hours (such as a 3-5 day fast) of fasting benifits.
Thank you for all that you to. Amazing knowlege you provide all of us. take care. 💛

      @civilapalyan6253 ปีที่แล้ว +20

I don't think you gained weight by the 20-4 itself. The weight gain or loss ultimately boils down whether you consume more calories than needed. If so, no varying will save you from the extra pounds.

As a nurse working in an integrative/functional medicine office that literally prescribes keto/intermittent fasting, I cant tell you what a breath of fresh air this information is. A patient actuallg came into our office and she was holding Your book, Fast Like a Girl. She was so passionate and enthusiastic about her discovery...she even brought in body composition testing of a before and after of one month doing the carb cycling around hormones and her results were amazing...I'm talking huge decrease in visceral fat...even though not a ton of pounds lost. She was glowing. That very weekend I bought the book myself. I was then searching youtube, fasting reset...and low and behold Your video popped up first. I said whoa...thats the Dr. That wrote the book. Didnt realize you had your own channel. Thank you thank you, hands down one of the most beneficial videos I have seen...especially for me, an almost 40yr old woman, heading into the "changes" ... and whos always done the old school 7 days of fasting day after day and then "falling off the bandwagon" as many do. I have lost 50 pounds, over 5 years by gradually cutting back on how much I eat and by replacing manufactured sweets with fruits. I began fasting, about 4 months ago, and while I haven't dropped weight I've lost an inch on my waist and two on my hips in that time. I dropped almost 2 dress sizes as I have also been doing weight and resistance training along with cardio. I am 79 and am being treated for metastatic breast cancer. I've noticed that the regimen has significantly decreased the pain in my ribs which makes it far easier to move around now. I don't know if the pain was radiating from my failing heart, the cancer in my right lung, or my autoimmune disease (whatever it is), but I'm glad to be rid of it.

Since I started watching Dr Mindy videos I have gotten to a weight that I haven't been in over 2 decades!!! My goal is to lose at least 8 more lbs by the end of the year, which will get me into the 160s a weight i haven't been for at least 25 years. For reference when I was young, I weighed about 110 lbs then mid-30s my weight exploded until I eventually weighed 230!! And I was at that weight for years. I have been watching and learning on this channel for 2 years. I'd say for me personally, varied fasting (16 to 25 hours daily) along with an occasional feast (non fasting) day works really well. If I get stuck, I do a 72 hour water fast and that works every time.

I've followed Dr. Mindy's on this and it has helped me on my Keto journey tremendously. As a 74 year old female, I have found intermittent fasting has helped me with digestion and I am sleeping better. I do not eat anything after 6 and only drink herbal tea to keep hydrated along with water. When I get a hunger pang, I ask myself if it’s dehydration or hunger. And, I usually tell myself I can eat anytime I want so I push through the pang by staying busy. The hunger pangs spasm pass and I no longer feel hungry. I don’t deny myself good food. I stop eating when I am full and I never feel deprived. I started paying close attention to how I feel when I eat various food and drinks and kept a food diary that also logged my bowel movements. It was enlightening. I also asked my doctor to prescribe a glucose monitor for two weeks to see the cause and effect of what I was eating, when I first wake up and how long it takes for blood sugar to normalize. Now I know what to avoid based on my own metabolism. I recommend everyone try the glucose monitor. It works with my iPhone and provides instant reads without having to continuously prick your finger.

Great vid. The most powerful part of this from experience is how the body adapts to any eating plan and adjust to prevent further weight loss. As a competitive athlete , I like fasting 4-5 days a week for about 20 hours in order to get the hormonal response and metabolic flexibility to use both fats and carbs for energy. That said, I absolutely agree that varying fast lengths is critical to offsetting metabolic adaptation towards lower set points along with fasting breaks of 1-2 weeks . Listen to your body carefully. It gives clues that it’s time for a change and/or break from fasting.

I also do a prolonged fast once per month, which starts when I close my eating window on Sunday, and opens back up on that Thursday. I then start the process over again for my ADF until it is time to do the prolonged fast the next month. Works quite well for me.

It basically requires 16 hours or more of starvation for autophagy. 36+ plus intermittent fasting usually needs to be done under expert control. Regular exercise should be done to prevent slowing down of metabolism with intermittent fasting. After all, no one is saying that you can be healthy with only intermittent fasting.
But 24 hour fasting and ketogenic diet done regularly with sports is definitely a super treatment.

I am just starting this way of eating, I was on Ozempic for a year and lost 30 lbs. (170->140) I never had any side effects on Ozempic and had a BM daily (mct oil in my tea every morning helped I think). My clinic stated that now that I had a ‘normal’ BMI they cancelled my prescription. I must admit I thought it was very responsible of them to have that policy but I still have 10+ lbs to lose. I am 5’6”, 68 years old and I want to get down to 130 or less. After a month of clean eating I gained 5 lbs so I was looking for a solution. I had done 16/8 in the past but never lost any weight so I tried a 36 hr fast with a 12 hour feeding window. I lost 3.8 lbs!!!! This longer fast is my saviour. I didn’t think I could do a 36 hr fast and I was so hungry at 24 hours I ate some cheese and went to bed. My stomach did not like it, I had a restless night sleeping and I lost it the next morning. I was happy to wait until lunchtime to eat after that so I completed the 36 hour fast, 12 hours eating with protein, salad, more protein and some whipped creme with chocolate sauce (my ice creme alternative). Still lost 3.8 lbs! I can continue this WOE until I lose all the weight that I want to lose and then vary my fasts to maintain it. I’m 16 hours fasted now and in the middle of doing another 36/12. Thanks so much Dr Mindy, until I saw your TH-cam videos on longer fasts I thought that fasting didn’t work for me.

Then want to get down to 165 which is what I got married at 25 years ago, then see if I can get further. Not sure since my body seems happiest in the 175-180 range but we’ll see. My point is this process can take time to get used to doing and will have its challenging periods. Try to focus on your overall goal and not daily numbers. All the best on your journey!!!

#5 Fasting all the time was the biggest mistake I made. I lost over 100 pounds with 72-hour fasts and started extending my fasts to 7-10 days, one meal refeed, and then all over again. Huge mistake. I'm back to 20:4, I've gained some weight back, but I'm sure I'll lose it again, slowly and healthily. No extremes.

Then the pandemic happened, menopause at same time and gained nearly 30 pounds. In the last year I have tried IF, calories counting and trying to get into a training routine with slow results, then diagnosed I was diagnosed with Breast CA 8/5 and had to stop working out d/t surgeries and recovery time. I have one more surgery in April to finalize the reconstruction process but I started IF and with my surgeon approval and starting to exercise again. Hi Dr. Mindy this is my first time on your channel. Watched your interview with Lewis Howes earlier that encouraged me to watch more of your fasting guidelines.
Thanks much for these helpful tips on variation of fasting periods, taking a week or 2 on fasting and intentionally switching to natural and healthy carb, protein and good fats.
One thing I've also learned that I find as a golden truth on fasting is that we just don't focus on losing weight or fats but also consider.. SAVING and strengthening our MUSCLES as we grow older as many are just doing stretching and regular exercises only...not much on resistance training or muscle training that must also be incorporated with it to maximize the holistic approach on healthy living for longevity.
Hope you can have an episode on that topic and give us a do-able muscle training at home.
Also, hope you can also have a topic on what vitamins or food, or fruits or veggies that we should not eat together.
In case a person is pre-diabetic & has high cholesterol, high sgpt, sgot... is it true that it is better to take the whole fruit than juice it up coz juicing it makes it more easily digested as more on sugar?
Do you have videos on healthy advance prep foods for a week?
One last, I have a 65 year old sister who said that fasting g is not for her due to the many medicines that she takes that needs food in take. What is your advice to a person like her with health concern.. 65 y.o., has high blood daily medication, has Asthma that maintains an inhaler and steroid, had history of thyroid concern and low potassium, and vertigo.
How can I help her improve her health through fasting and remove her fear of itdue to her health concerns, age and medication?

It's been very frustrating and deflating not being able to get control of this and trying to find proper information on how to help alleviate some of these symptoms. For eight years I've been struggling with this - I've tried IF many times over - and just looking all over the internet for information on what might work best for me. So now I have binged watched your videos (feel like a stalker already, LOL) I had adrenal fatigue after all the covid media and everything was out of sync in my body. Vagus nerve, hormones, anxiety, you name it. I picked up 12 kilos, which is a lot for me as I am petite, my normal weight is around 50kgs. I worked on my state of mind, did a detox and then started exercising. The detox helped to lose a little but it didn’t stay off. I was not over eating and I was eating clean. I started a varied fast and today is my 1st week over, and I have lost 1.8 kgs already, my hubby lost 2.5kgs. And we both feel GREAT already!!!! I'm doing really well. I do a 20/4 fast each day, having a break fast smoothie at 4pm and then a meal at 7pm... I'm certainly not ready for it any sooner and it's smaller than I would have had in the past. I make sure to have enough healthy fats, clean protein and as little carbs as possible per day. Oh and I drink ginger water ( home made) sometimes with fresh lemon juice add, sometime without. I drink this all day long, apart from a couple of cups of strong black coffee before 12 noon.I feel fantastic and my weight is still coming off but not quite as quickly as it did initially.... I haven't been doing my daily exercise/walk as often as I should and I know that's the cause. Weigh wise I'm down to 12st 8lbs and THRILLED. More importantly I've never felt as good. One tip is the ginger water. I don't feel hungry at all and I'm sure it's down to ginger being an appetite suppressant. Good luck if you're giving IF a try. C xx

Or is there a generalised thing, like 16/8 for 1 or 2 months and then stop 2 weeks?

I’ve been watching your videos for a few days and just ordered your book, Fast Like a Girl. And I’m so excited to put all of your knowledge and experience to use! I carry an extra 15 pounds around my belly and I’m telling it, thank you for storing it there and not around my organs!
I just completed my first 17 hour fast, and it was easier than I thought! Looking forward to putting all of your knowledge to use, and shrinking my waist line! Thank you!🙌😎

I'm 56 and have been doing OMAD since 2019...Lost weight and achieved my optimal weight, then I started gaining a bit back the last few years. I'm going to change it up. Not fasting for a few days on the weekends, incorporating a 48 hour fast here and there during the week, and doing 18 to 24 hour fasts the rest of the time... I feel more tired on the days I'm eating: mostly home cooked vegetarian or vegan with healthy fats (and the occasional pizza day lol)

Wow. 24/48 hour fast. That sounds incredibly difficult to do. I have been doing 16/8 since June 2019 and my weight has remained steady at 175 to 180 (60 Y.O. M) (5'9") I have suddenly gained before even tho I eat fairly clean and I exercise every other day doing mostly cardio. I admit I am really stubborn when it comes to not changing routines but I am willing to give it a try. I am not so focused on weight as I am health and I have been having a lot of muscle and tendonitis issues including tennis elbow in both arms. I really don't know what the problem is other than just age. I find it hard to believe that just because I am 60 I get injuries so easily. Thanks for the great video!

Hi there I read your comment and understand, I am 60 yo F. And I understand your struggles, have you looked at large doses of vitamin D along with K2? Also mega threes and turmeric help me a lot. In 2014 I was in a major car accident and swear by those things. I have not taken any pain meds for several years. Hope that helps and we're all on this journey together

@@debbieking6664 Yes! I just recently went to a wellness clinic for an evaluation with the tennis elbow and learned that i was very low on vitamin D. It seems to be helping so you and the Dr. Are correct. Thanks

It's helping my joints alot, just remember to take the K2 as well. 100 mil for every 10k of D3
I take 40k vit D, if you have any more questions about the protocol look up Dr Eric Berg on TH-cam He's amazing

Hello Dr. Mindy! I wrote last week that I am very proud of my progress (33 pounds in 4 months, no more pre-diabetic, my doctor decreased my Synthroid for the first time in 20 years). But I sense that I am hitting a slow-down weight-wise. So I will take the opportunity to take a vacation off fasting for a week and then come back. I will eat correctly until I get back on the fasting trail. Thx for everything.

Wow, so happy to have found your channel and this is the first video I watched but subscribed straight away. I’ve been doing 16.8 for years but it’s become comfortable and I really think these tips will help. Thanks

I’m on carnivore. Love it, but I’m only eating between 10am and 3pm. I just did a 72 hour fast. I do not snack. If I feel extremely hungry to the point I can’t sleep, I drink some homemade bone broth. Made with chicken feet, chicken breast with bone, salt and peppercorn only.
I’ve only done one fast. Maybe I’ll try them once a week and switch up the times. ❤
    Edit: in 6 weeks I’m down 23#, 6” waist, 5.5” hips, 2” thighs. I’m a 53 yo post menopausal woman.

So happy to be only 8 lbs over my bmi (short term goal), thank you for these awesome tips!! Made castor oil shampoo bars today - so hoping to cut down on toxins that way too. The toxins that are not easy are the prescription meds…

    just what I needed!
I started fasting in March, lost 9 lbs in the first month, then fluctuated a pound or two each way with a net loss of only 3 lbs over the next three months.

I really appreciate your help/ and you showing us this amazing advice. I do between 20 to 24 HR’s fasting. I’am still struggling with my body. I used to be 220. Now I’m 177. I’am skinny. Fat. I’ve been trying to get lean.
