Byron, hailed by many as the greatest romantic poet of his time, inherited Newstead Abbey at the age of 10. He died of fever in Messolonghi, Greece, while fighting in the Greek War of Independence.
His body was brought back to England but, after being refused a burial place at Westminster, he was laid to rest in the Byron family vault in St Mary Magdalene Church in Hucknall.
