  • This is the starter guide for the Paladin in Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition (EE). This guide will show some hints how to build a Paladin as well as what I think about the morality of Baldur's Gate and how that impacts how characters play in the game.
[Insert 1990s TSR Morality commentary here]
I'll release more starter guides and playthrough videos for Baldur's Gate EE as well as exploring other PC games and TTRPGs.
I play Baldur's Gate EE through Steam with way too many mods installed, I brought the frame rate up to 45 FPS. An updated video with the mods and gameplay items will be uploaded sometime soon.

I hate how being evil doesn't even net you better monetary rewards while low rep also jacking up store prices. I guess getting access to the best tank, best cleric and the two best mages makes up for it.

I agree completely, this is one of BGEE's biggest weaknesses. Being a good character makes you stronger and/or richer character even with a slightly weaker party. This is because when Baldur's Gate 1 was first released, they had a strong aim to have the heroes act 'good' and commit deeds of mercy, justice, honesty, and honor. Meanwhile, evil characters were cartoonishly evil and foolishly unrealistic. This wasn't necessarily by the game designers' choice, but was from D&D's parent company, TSR.
I'm happy that characters in gaming in general, especially role-playing games, have significantly more depth today. If they were to recreate a new Infinity Engine game in this world, around events similar to BG 1 and 2 (but maybe before BG 3), then the characters would have much more depth than "That Paladin is a good guy" and "That baby-eating wizard is a bad guy."
But yes, being evil should come with some benefits other than a few good party members.

As evil character only difference for me is I sucker punch everyone so I can loot their chests without guards coming, which usually don’t give anything good.

Honestly, from a roleplaying perspective playing as evil doesn't make a lot of sense. You start off as a 1st lvl character and right off the bat you have a bounty on your head, no protector or place you can be safe. Acting high handed, going out of your way to make enemies, alienating potential allies, doesn't really make too much sense. Just don't think the PC is in the position to be a total scumbag.

@@Redjoy123 It's a shame they weren't allowed to reward players for being evil, because as you said above it's terrible for balance. But it made commercial sense in the 90s. Video games were controversial for allegedly making kids violent, DnD was controversial for alleged 'Satanism', and so a DnD video game would've been an obvious target for certain groups to tear down for being a bad example for the youth.

@@mikedeck8381 sure but not all evil people are calculating sociopaths and master manipulators. Some people (not even necessarily evil people) are just assholes who aren't good with people and get in their own way.

When creating these guide videos, I give the sample character the best equipment possible to give them the highest AC. Certainly items that are possible in the game, but not always acquired at that time. See these guides similarly to those intro guide videos for Diablo 2 or 3, showing off the class completely wrecking opponents while having an explanation as to how the class works.

Which paladin kit best in your opinion?

    • @Redjoy123

So I like Cavaliers, they have immunities to Fear and Poison which impact them throughout the entire game. Undead Hunters are good too but don't get a huge amount more than the base Paladin. Both are very good!
I USED TO really dislike Inquisitors, going after them for being a "one-trick-pony" but while I hold that they are still a "one-trick-pony," I think that one trick is a pretty good one. They aren't my favorite but I have a little bit more respect for Inquisitors thanks to Quintus (my current hardcore run as of July of 2024)
