Paladin 2/6 & sorcerer X is arguable one of the most powerful multiclasses in thr game. Quicken Spell allows you cast full action spells and make melee attacks the same turn. Quicken Hold Person and run up for free auto crit smites or Quicken Haste to boost yourself martially. Only issue with the build is that it uses A LOT of resources in a short time but the damage output and flexibility is unmatched.
Warlock 3 or 5 and rest Paladin is absurd. Pact of Blade so you can just go full CHA/CON. You also get an extra attack from hitting level 5 in both classes(so 2 extra attacks!), but just going just 3 Warlock nets you a lot of utility, with two level 2 warlock spell slots, 2 Eldritch invocations(buff eldritch blast with CHA modifier, superior darkvision, etc), and Pact of the Blade. Starting Paladin is better for heavy armor proficiency tho.
alternatively look into BM commander strike. U can have someone in your aprty grant u a weapona ttack as a reaction. Meaning without quickened spell u can cast hold person, then smite them as a reaction.
Paladin 7 + Warlock 5 gives you two extra attacks. Currently the extra attack from Warlock(Pact of Blade) stacks with other classes extra attack as it isn't considered a feature in BG3 allowing you to get 3 attacks from a weapon attack. This may be a bug though. Edit: You can get con proficiency from a hired 6th level Wizard(Transmutation). The wizard can create a Transmuter's stone. There are various effects that it can give, namely increase movement or proficiency in Con are both good choices. You do not need to keep the hired wizard in your party, just have him create the stone and put it into your inventory then remove him from your party. This can help free up a feat slot since you wouldn't need war caster/Resilient feat for concentration spells. Though you will have to create it again after each long rest.
it's definitely a bug since the description says that extra attacks of different kinds should not stack (the description in BG3, not dnd). Whether they'll ever fix it is a whole different question :D Thanks a lot fo the edit, it was very helpful.
@@LordCommanderVex Agreeded I believe it is a bug, though there is a slight argument to be had. The Extra attack feature states that "If you gain the Extra Attack feature from more than one class, they don't add together.". The pact of the blade however does not technically give you the extra attack feature specifically as it is built into Pact of the Blade instead. By RAW it appears to be working but by RAI I believe it shouldn't.
I decided to go crazy and try a drow dexterity dual wield paladin. Felt more roleplaying appropriate. But it's actually worked really well. With dual wielding feat and the right gear to boost AC I was able to block a route, surrounded by 6 enemies who virtually never hit, whilst I was dishing out 3-4 hits per turn.
One thing that has worked for me in D&D and similar games for off-tanks, but also even main tanks to a degree, is to focus on armor class over constitution. If the enemy can’t hit the tank, it’s pretty hard to kill the tank. A dexterous fighter/Paladin can have a really high ac, and they become really tough to hit when combined with heavy armor, allowing you to take a couple points out of con, which is nice because now your paladins and fighters get a little extra help from the dex saving throws.
I am currently playing a two weapon fighting paladin/ranger build. The offhand attack competes with a lot of paladin bonus actions and hunter's mark, BUT it very useful when fighting tough, resistant enemies that are weak to radiant. Of which there are plenty! It let's you spread your smites around to clear out multiple nasty enemies. Also, you can get an amazing set of proficiencies and saves.
I’m playing a Ranger Knight, with dual wielding perk, trying to decide to multi class with Paladin, Cleric or Druid…. Can’t decide but Paladin as a secondary class sounds fun.
@@Sammybree Paladin is indeed fun. They have some useful spells and class perks, but nothing really beats getting to throw a smite on top of a critical hit.
@@Sammybree Fighter is a great multiclass for action surge, but Cleric and Druid mesh better with Ranger than Paladin due to also being Wisdom-dependent classes, whereas Paladin is multi-attribute but uses charisma for spells. Ranger + War Cleric could be a good combo.
As a pally main on the table top, it is so satisfying seeing the Misty step into just turning them to mush combo play out 😂 plus a couple of brain bug powers letting you turn a hit into a critical just let's you melt bosses before they even act
I really appreciate this video. As a returning player to this type of gameplay. I appreciate it. I played Divinity 2, it was confusing at first. Since returning, I understand this game player a bit better.
I went with Paladin MC on my first playthrough and they don't get really powerful until about level 5. Other than that, it's a simple class to manage and the high charisma makes it really good for being the face of the party.
Give Fex time, one day you'll come here and it will be like the great library of info, content, etc. Fextralife is a national treasure that should be protected at all costs lol.
Sentinel is also on par with Savage attacker, since you are always near enemy and for sure you have another melee companion up there as well. Whether you are lock on an enemy melee or range they cant escape you and if the Ai attack you near companion you get a free attack.
Athelete is a phenomenal feat for level 4. Not only does it give a point in Strength letting a 17-str Pali cross a threshold, it also makes your jump an excellent movement option to get around your usual movement issues. Coordinate with a spellcaster ritual casting Jump and Feather Fall, and you'll be launching around the battlefield even better than most Barbarians. You weren't using that Bonus Action for anything else anyway.
I can highly recomend warlock paladin muticlass lets you ignore the STR stat with packt of the blade. I recomend gonig with only one class until lvl 5 then respec at level 6 into 1 level of pala (Heavy armor proficencie) and 6 levels warloc and then tacking pala levels as you go. You can even cocider tacking some sorc levels after level 9.
lol! In 99.9% of my D&D games, I always go pally first, but in this one I decided to try something different, so I picked sorcerer. But maaaannn... the urge to roll back into pally is gigantic... hahahaha.... I'm forcing myself to hold on a little longer and get a few more sorc levels, to see if those big f*cking guns, I mean, spells, make the class fun to play.
I'm playing Warlock/Sorcerer, I am having a lot of fun! Paladin felt underwhelming, but maybe I was feeling that way because I played a Dwarf and spent so much time trying to get to my enemies.
2 Level in Paladin is great for any Meleeclass, Divine Smite is killer and the AoE heal is big bonusaction and always turns the tide for my frontline. If you get Bonus Attack from a different Martial Artist class I recommend 8 MA + 4 Paladin, other than that just 8 Level in Paladin seems to be the sweet spot if you mainly want a Paladin, Bonus Attack, 2 Feats, Aura. Right now my Paladin is Lv.4 and I am unsure what he will become when Lv.9.
Any weapon thay says "finesse" is good for DEX or STR melee builds, it just uses your best modifier between the two for attack and damage rolls. Rapiers, daggers, short swords, scimitars, whips, and darts fall in this category in D&D, meaning that if you have weapon proficiency with any of these and higher DEX than STR, you can make them work for either stat. Rapiers and short swords are actually quite good, even when they're not magic or +1, +2, etc, and they remain releveant throughout an entire playthrough as long as you get your damage stat up to 20, which everyone can do by level 8 (Fighters can do this at level 6).
Go warlock level 3 with full charisma no strength. Take pact of blade, then pali untill max level. Your pact of blade makes ur charisma modifier your weapon dmg so you keep weapon dmg. You get powerfull level 2 spells for warlock (warlock kinda useless after that tho). Takes a while to ramp up but you can also take a crit skill that fears so you can get tadpole ability and armor to build a crit style paladin with powerfull area spells and smites that applies debufs. All at the same time as being able to help with saving throws on your casters while being ambushed. Not to mention sacking strength means you can put it in dex and const which makes you tanky with initiative and keeps your dmg. From testing take pali first level to get heavy armor prof, you have literally everything.
@@middleagedgamers7750 when you get major milestones for pali you can just take the extra level in warlock. Honestly the couple points of extra dmg in combat from extra charisma points is not worth losing out of free fear procs and multi target spells that regenerate on short rest.
I'm talking by the end... doesn't matter when you take 4 in lock just at some point at level cap of 12 you really don't want to miss out on getting 3 feats@@U8mymicro
I think your just min maxing too much. The feats don't feel very strong except for point enhancement. You can just take another level of warlock if you really want a end game feat. You should focus on important level spells while leveling through the game. The only real downside is waiting on pal extra attack but you get warlock double eld blast so its not so bad. Alternatively you can wait to level five pali to take warlock. But ive found warlock to be better early game (higher spike aginst lower level enemies). You can also just go level three warlock and respec at level five to 5 paladin. Meaning you use early game warlock spike and then level 5 paladin spike. All around op character @@middleagedgamers7750
Not sure if this is a bug but don't multiclass into warlock for short rest spell slots, the game won't let you choose which spell slots to use and forces you to use up all your paladin spell slots before using any warlock ones. You might still want to consider warlock for pact of the blade tho.
@@certanmike problem with that is if you only go 3 lock you are going to miss out on a feat. Every 4 levels in a single class gives a feat. so 4 lock/8 paladin would be the way to go. 12 levels total in game.
My vengeance paladin took the great weapon master feat at 4th level. Using vow of emnity to gain advantage and getting a bless buff from my cleric means i can more easily hit the enemy for even bigger damage. And the magic items i've found only further improve my hit chance.
There's also the "Gloves of the Growling Underdog" in the Underdark. They give you advantage on every enemy when surrounded by at least 2 enemies. Most OP item in the game imho. Vow of Enmity is still amazing because bosses usually don't come in pairs.
@@FinckelsteinAgreed, it’s sick. I’ve got that with a Paladin/Barb multi class and if the opponent doesn’t get that high AC, then they won’t last long as I smack for around 40-50 per attack 🤣
This was my thinking for my paladin as well, especially after it was used against me by the paladin of tyr to do 5 attacks in one turn and almost wipe my party.
Doing that with my fighter. There's a ring that gives advantage to all attack rolls but disadvantage on all saving throws but its turned me into an unstoppable meatgrinder
Half-orc + Oeath of Veng + Savage attacker + Great weapon exp + Divine Smite rank 3 + colossus pot + big af two-hander = 200 single target dmg a turn. I have killed Myrkul in 1 turn with 2 crits.
My lv7 half orc paladin killed a certain act 2 boss in one crit with 80+ dmg. Feels good. Worth noting too, half orc crit bonus does not apply to all damage. It’s a base weapon damage roll as a bonus.
Respecialized Wyll to start with vengeance paladin, got 2nd lvl, then got him 5 lvls of warlock, pact of the blade, second attack, demonic vision. It felt not so good to wait so much to unlock an extra attack, even though he still was good, but now, omg, what a machine. He surely is now the Blade of Frontiers. Planning to got him 3rd lvl of paladin to get that Vow of Enmity and after all of that go for 4 lvls of Bard College of Swords to gain a lot extra spellslots, bardic inspiration, useful spells, duelist fighting style and even an ability to deal extra damage with this bardic inspiration, though it will be deep in late game. Just wanted to share this awesome triple multiclass I came up with.
Something I learned yesterday, Oathbreakers cannot respec. You must retake your oath for 1000 if you want to respec your character. Yesterday was costly for our party... We called it my paladin's mid-life crisis.
I can't believe they nerfed dragonborn for no reason. Breath weapon is once per long rest instead of one per long or short rest like it should be. I really wanted to make a bronze dragonborn tempest cleric for a scaling breath weapon once per fight 😢
Oath of Devotion's Sacred Weapon (adding CHA to attack) and Great Weapon Master (+10 dmg flat per swing for -5 attack which sacred weapon mitigates) are a great combo that are worth sacrificing an ASI for.
You could also Multi-class Warlock for Pact of the Blade, and not have to waste your Channel Divinity/Oath Charge or whatever it's called on Sacred Weapon.
@@mghegotagun I think pact of blade removes strength from the equation whereas devotion adds charisma to it. So you would benefit from both charisma and strength. So 20 charisma on top of whatever your strength is literally does offset the -5 completely.
I've played a Paladin in World of Warcraft since 2005. I've never really done DND/Baldur's Gate stuff, but I really want to play a paladin. Even after watching this, I'm not really sure, what I should go. I'm likely wrong, but I can't help thinking, that paladin is just uniquely badly suited for what it wants to do, if I understand things right. There's a lot of concentration abilities, but aren't you broken out of concentration when hit (if you fail save roll?) - so wouldn't it be better if someone else had the concentration things, than (one of) your melee dude? I really cannot wrap my head around, how I should start playing a paladin. I tried once (with a friend) and we didn't play 5 minutes outside of the intro-space, before I was an oathbreaker and had no idea why. Paladins, to me, feel super restricted and are offered extremely little power in return. In what world do I not just play a melee cleric instead for a tank/frontline or a... something for the damage? If I want to play a melee (either 1h+shield or 2h weapon user), can someone suggest what race, oath and feats I should be looking at? And should I just stick to paladin or should I multiclass? My own idea was to go Vengeance (as it seems less restricted), but the oath-spells seem... worse'ish after level 5? Atm I'm contemplating just going Cleric, Warlock and Wizard as my 3 man team and swap in whichever NPC I need for a mission. I just wish I could find a way to fit in a paladin instead of one of the 3... Palabois for life. :)
10:12 you mention you can dump dex but just remember that means you have - on initiative rolls. To combat this so far I've been using the dexterity gloves found at the creche, which give me 18 dex despite having no points into the stat. This has allowed me to roll high initiative most of the time and still have a load of strength/everything else
I like paladin 9/warlock 3 multiclass option so you can dump not only Dexterity, but also Strength since BG3 unlike DnD 5e doesn't have Strength requirement for heavy armor. You get all the juice of the paladin except aura of immunity to frightened condition and you also can use your Charisma for attacks, have a decent ranged option and as well as 2 lvl 2 spell slots for your smites which recharge every short rest. The only thing you sacrifice is 1 feat option which is almost nothing comparing to what you get in return
I know "Dark Urge" is fully customizable origin character but I think Paladin should be an exception for him. He shouldn't ba able to be to be played as Paladin or he should be an Oathbreaker from the start. That would make a way to start as an Oathbreaker and it would fit his dark background.
An important thing to note is that if you become an Oathbreaker as the Paladin, won’t be allowed to change your class unless you pay the initial 1000G fee to swear your oath again. So changing classes if you’re an Oathbreaker technically costs 1100G as opposed to just 100G. And that’s only if it’s the first time, the cost to reswear your oath increases each time so be careful.
Enjoying these primer videos for the classes just to be more aware how each classes are in a bit more explanation details. One thing I don’t really understand is Throws and Save Mechanics. Just no idea what is being talked about there.
Rolled a Gold Dwarf as Paladin because they get scaling health bonus as they level. Important as a front liner. As for feats, Sentinel plus polearm mastery means nobody without a polearm of their own is moving within attack range of your paladin without getting hit by opportunity strike. Deadly effective at protecting other frontliners, such as Karlach.
Love this…but I hope we get expanded content that gives us Conquest. Feel like the fear mechanic would work wonders within the game. This is also one of the subclasses that also gains a lot of benefit from bigger charisma since you need it for the spell dc.
Ive played games all my life and BG3 is probably the best ive ever played hands down. Its got the story arcs like KOTOR with an upgraded fight mechanics lije pathfinder.
FYI, There's a bug in Paladin/Warlock that's really annoying right now, you can't use your Warlock spell slots for smites until AFTER you use all your paladin spell slots, this makes the warlock spell slots way less useful if you're focused on Smiting.
Looks fun, but dang breaking your oath randomly because you didn't get full context on a situation or something sucks. I killed the tieflings who had lazel captive and immediately got Oathbreaker.
I never understood why people are so crazy about divine smite. Yes, you get the chance to one shot an enemy in the early game, but you can't do it often. Are you long resting after every single fight so you can spam your smites? Or, you can cast shield of faith that lasts till a long rest, take heavy armor, defense style, and shield, and have 21 AC early af and just be an immovable attack sponge. Once you get past druid grove, shit starts to hit hard. Having 21 AC+ increases your odds of survival bigly and you don't have to rest nearly as often.
I personally wouldnt dump all the ASI/Feat upgrades into STR. I am sure somewhere in the game, a belt of giant's strength exist. Hopefully an amulet of health too especially since we dont have to worry about attunement slots in the game
One thing I noticed is if you multiclass into paladin from a different starting class, it seems to default to you being an oath of the ancients paladin. That's what happened when I went into paladin from a draconic bloodline sorcerer, anyways. I also decided to be dark urge that playthrough, so I ended up oathbreaking against my will also

@@CsStrez extra attack doesnt add together if you hit lvl 5 with two classes get it. Warlock is still a great pick
I don't know why I torture myself by watching these videos while I'm at work, lol. I just want to get home and load up the game😁
Though you will have to create it again after each long rest.
yo! that edit is amazing! I'm doing that right now!
That padlock 3 attacks is definitely not D&D 5e, so I'd assume a bug, but who knows.
the stacking extra attack is crazy and will probably get patched soon, but i have to try this with haste. 6 attacks per round?!
it's definitely a bug since the description says that extra attacks of different kinds should not stack (the description in BG3, not dnd). Whether they'll ever fix it is a whole different question :D Thanks a lot fo the edit, it was very helpful.
It says it doesn't stack, so definitely a bug
@@LordCommanderVex Agreeded I believe it is a bug, though there is a slight argument to be had. The Extra attack feature states that "If you gain the Extra Attack feature from more than one class, they don't add together.". The pact of the blade however does not technically give you the extra attack feature specifically as it is built into Pact of the Blade instead. By RAW it appears to be working but by RAI I believe it shouldn't.
Not my class, but I am looking forward to seeing others. Thank you for great guides!
I want to try a Sword Bard/Paladin mix for a Drow Paladin of Eilistraee. I wish we could optionally pick a god as paladin.
Oath of vengeance. Great weapon master, pole arm master and sentinel when capped at 12. A badass!
best class in the game. Love Paladin
As a pally main on the table top, it is so satisfying seeing the Misty step into just turning them to mush combo play out 😂 plus a couple of brain bug powers letting you turn a hit into a critical just let's you melt bosses before they even act

Just in time before I start my daily paladin routine! Thanks for the guide, having a blast with paladin!
This is such a good guide. I'm starting this game today, so I wish there were more class guides. Can't wait!
Give Fex time, one day you'll come here and it will be like the great library of info, content, etc. Fextralife is a national treasure that should be protected at all costs lol.
Ps5 players will benefit sooooo much from their delayed release ^^
I've been playing since 79, always an amature player, always room to learn...
Sentinel is also on par with Savage attacker, since you are always near enemy and for sure you have another melee companion up there as well. Whether you are lock on an enemy melee or range they cant escape you and if the Ai attack you near companion you get a free attack.
You can also divine smite the reaction. IMO this us a way better option to pick than ability score improvement.
Try sentinel + polearm master. You just deal damage without pressing any buttons while also blocking enemies in place
are there any good polearms in the P1 only one i came across was from waukeems inn. And that was hardly anything to write home about.
As someone who has never played paladin. This guide helps though i dont understand to fully
Just a reminder: you can't use hold person and then hunters mark them with the same character as they both require concentration
I’m wanting to do a dark urge run with an oathbreaker but I want minthara in my party, so I may do a sorlock or barb as the dark urge
Good guide and knowledge! you really sum up everything I've been watching and searching online the past few days about the Paladin.
Nice guides. I made Gold Dwarf two handed weapon paladin and now regeetting a bit after watching your guide. I might restart but we shall see.
From testing take pali first level to get heavy armor prof, you have literally everything.
going to miss out on a feat if you only take 3 in lock.
In fextralife we trust.....Honestly I do not know what I will do without fextralife for information.
Awesome,waiting for the rogue episode
I just started a paladin and you upload this one, awesome!
Not sure if this is a bug but don't multiclass into warlock for short rest spell slots, the game won't let you choose which spell slots to use and forces you to use up all your paladin spell slots before using any warlock ones. You might still want to consider warlock for pact of the blade tho.
glad you said this - i was actually about to make a new pally and was planning to multiclass Warlock just for the spell slot's on short rests
As you don't need str for heavy armor I was thinking going 3 lock after 2 paladin then paladin the rest of the way
@@certanmike This is my plan tbh Oathbreaker PLD with 3 Lock (Path of the Blade)
@@certanmike problem with that is if you only go 3 lock you are going to miss out on a feat. Every 4 levels in a single class gives a feat. so 4 lock/8 paladin would be the way to go. 12 levels total in game.
@@middleagedgamers7750 then you miss the paladin level 3 spells
My vengeance paladin took the great weapon master feat at 4th level. Using vow of emnity to gain advantage and getting a bless buff from my cleric means i can more easily hit the enemy for even bigger damage. And the magic items i've found only further improve my hit chance.
Running the same build. It's OP!
Excellent guide. I briefly started a Pally, but I am going to reroll with these tip! Thanks!
best guides on youtube, I'm definitely gonna subscribe
This is awesome
I wish this game had a manual with all the spells for the different classes etc just like the handbooks of BG1 and 2!

@@Fextralife I often look at your wiki, thanks for effort. But a real printed manual is someting I still miss.

On paper they are amazing! They sound just as much fun in BG3
Will play Dragonborn Paladin. Cannot deceide Silver of Gold.
wished there was platinum and gemstone
I can't believe they nerfed dragonborn for no reason. Breath weapon is once per long rest instead of one per long or short rest like it should be. I really wanted to make a bronze dragonborn tempest cleric for a scaling breath weapon once per fight 😢
Oath of Devotion's Sacred Weapon (adding CHA to attack) and Great Weapon Master (+10 dmg flat per swing for -5 attack which sacred weapon mitigates) are a great combo that are worth sacrificing an ASI for.
Wouldn't warlock's pact of the blade do the same thing as sacred weapon freeing up the paladin to do vengance, or oathbreaker instead?
You could also Multi-class Warlock for Pact of the Blade, and not have to waste your Channel Divinity/Oath Charge or whatever it's called on Sacred Weapon.
@@mghegotagun I think pact of blade removes strength from the equation whereas devotion adds charisma to it. So you would benefit from both charisma and strength. So 20 charisma on top of whatever your strength is literally does offset the -5 completely.
thst's the content I'm looking for. nice job
Currently running Karlach as a Wildheart Barb/Vengeance Pala. She's my one woman frontline.
Did a 70 damage Crit with my half-orc at lvl 4. Feels good.
thats the big d!ck dmg! Lol
Thanks for the tutorial, that's very useful
Thanks for the guides. I am so lost with this game and there is so much to learn
I've been waiting for the class and build guides for this game to start releasing. Great work as always!
THIS is the video I was waiting on. Sadly Im already 20 hours in on a Dragonborn Paladin, missing the Teifling bonus smites.
important callout for great weapon master being a very worthwhile pickup if you are going two handed.
If you’re going the elf route PLEASE take high elf with friends Cantrip, infinitely more worth it than a little of movement from wood elf
You can get the boots of speed in the under dark in act 1, gives you dash as a bonus action, I think it makes up for the lesser movement of paladins
New to BG3 and looking to go Paladin. Can you elaborate as to why Cantrip is better than the other? Thanks.
I know "Dark Urge" is fully customizable origin character but I think Paladin should be an exception for him. He shouldn't ba able to be to be played as Paladin or he should be an Oathbreaker from the start. That would make a way to start as an Oathbreaker and it would fit his dark background.
But what if you roleplay a good paladin, who was forced in Dark Urge plot, and resist it.
When you like and trust a source so much you immediately click like every time you enter the video. That's Fextralife for me.
Very very informative! Thank you!
Enjoying these primer videos for the classes just to be more aware how each classes are in a bit more explanation details. One thing I don’t really understand is Throws and Save Mechanics. Just no idea what is being talked about there.
Looking forward to the druid guide!
Thank you. This was a very helpful guide.
I'm getting more convinced for a paladin-warlock multiclass
Sorcadin is my favorite Multiclass
What level split for Pally and Sorc 6, 6 7, 5 or 8, 4?
thanks fo the video, great content. i appreciate your dedication for gaming so much
All I can say is BG3 brings me way back to when I actually utilized the SAVE function as a fail safe 😅
I broke my paladin oath on accident and it was the coolest thing that's ever happened to me in a game 😳😅
Ive played games all my life and BG3 is probably the best ive ever played hands down. Its got the story arcs like KOTOR with an upgraded fight mechanics lije pathfinder.
yay new class guides with the released game! SUBSCRIBED!!
FYI, There's a bug in Paladin/Warlock that's really annoying right now, you can't use your Warlock spell slots for smites until AFTER you use all your paladin spell slots, this makes the warlock spell slots way less useful if you're focused on Smiting.
Very helpful . I'm vengace paladin in my 1st multiplayer play through. Thanks
Just started my paladin play-through perfect timing!
I personally wouldnt dump all the ASI/Feat upgrades into STR. I am sure somewhere in the game, a belt of giant's strength exist. Hopefully an amulet of health too especially since we dont have to worry about attunement slots in the game
Hecka fun vid, I look forward to seeing the rest, I'm toying with fighter/thief atm so suggestions wouldn't be bad.

For a second evil playthrough a Dark Urge Oathbreaker into Warlock Multiclass seems incredible
My class of choice this time, i like the analysis!
