Just a thought. I have had the same problem with pilling and not wearing well across the front of tops. I finally figured out that the seat belt in the car rubs right over that area of the tops! Must be the friction from the seat belt. My solution is to get a seat belt cover from Walmart or another store, when I get in the car, as a passenger or driver, I position the padded cover over that area. It has saved a lot of my knit tops!

Romie Tumilowicz ...i never thought of that. I have the same issue with blouses and tops wearing out down the front. I will definitely go out and get a seat belt cover this week.

Thank you for such an honest observation it helps me to look honestly at my 10 item wardrobe. I think it goes back to that 10 item is not deprivation but an elevation in ones approach to style and appearance.

Thanks for sharing Jennifer! : ) I feel the issue of clothes wearing out is actually something we don't discuss enough! I think that we are too used to such massive wardrobes and "saving for best," that we forget that things wear out! They do! If we love something and wear it a lot, it will eventually wear out! I think we are far too attached to our "nice" pieces and too afraid of the idea of something wearing out/our closets shrinking from clothes getting worn, that it paralyzes us from wearing anything but clothes we are fine with getting grubby (sweats, grubby exercise clothes, etc.) and tossing out. My revelation on this topic came when I wore my new blazer out the first time and spilled all over it--there was such relief and also such an "ah-ha" moment of nothing lasting forever and clothes deserving to be worn. (Thankfully the spill came out! Haha.) If you love it, you may have to let it go at some point. Leave open the possibility for something better to come along once it's time. I must say, I also feel like I am "sticking it" to the consumerism machine when I wear something until it's worn out. We are told to buy more, more, more. Let's rebel against the system and wear things until they are worn, rather than always buying more! Take that mass consumerism! Haha. Again, thank you for sharing Jennifer. God bless. : )

Thank you for once again showing us a real-life look at your wardrobe process. :) I find myself editing through the seasons, as well. Most of my shopping is done at a local thrift store that carries excellent-condition items in quality brands, so since I rarely pay more than $12 for an item, it makes the editing process less painful. ;) Your L.L. Bean skirt is a lovely replacement, and I hope you'll show us what you purchase to replace the blouse and cardigan. :)

Not being aware of problem pieces is totally what happens when there is too much stuff! Love the! 💗

I'm so encouraged by this. I had a shirt tear in front, and have a pair of jeans that sag horribly by the end of the day. I was feeling disappointed, but you are right. It's definitely more that wardrobe awareness is higher-- I'm really using what I have now. Thanks for the encouragement!

Sad about the cardigan - was such a pretty color. I have had my own issues with staple items but like you said - it's easier to catch when you are working with less.

  • @angelabrodie2483

I love how you include the caveat that your decision that an item is not the best for you focuses on the fact there is something amiss with the clothing and not with you! I think as women we tend to be overly critical of ourselves and this is an important distinction. It is so important to realize that not every style, shape, color, or material will flatter you and that is not a reflection on you, it is just a simple fact - we are all unique and that should be celebrated.
(As a side note, I would absolutely return the sweater - AT should exchange it with no problems as long as you followed the washing instructions. Steaming should never alter a garment in that way, dry cleaners use steamers all the time, even on the most delicate garments like silk wedding dresses.)

Great video. It's nice to hear someone else say you have permission to replace items that aren't working. You've really inspired me and ever since I adopted the ten (ish 😂) item wardrobe it's been so much easier and I actually usually love everything I'm wearing.

Hi Jennifer, I don't normally shop in Ann Taylor, but about three seasons ago, I bought a bunch of pieces and was surprised at how poorly they wore! I primarily shop for the best pieces I can find in TJMaxx or Nordstrom Rack and never seem to have a problem. I won't shop in Ann Taylor again, and I would absolutely return it to see if they will make good on it in any way. It's worth a try.

I love that you did this video. There are some items that really don't work anymore, whether through defective construction, how our body changes, or just happenstance. I have items in my capsule that I've had for years that will continue on and some new items that I have already replaced. I really appreciate this post. Thanks for sharing.
Also, take that sweater back. I had a similar incident with an item of the same color where the dye pooled after washing, and I got a refund.

This video was refreshing! Sometimes I feel sad when pieces don't live up to my expectation.. but it is inevitable. There are so many different variables at play. I took almost a year to replace some black denim that I had owned for over four years and after only four wears the new jeans have permanent stretch marks all over. It happens to all of us!

  • @hipretty

I have a coral tee very similar in style, I loved it! It is not the same name, but it is all cotton and the same beautiful vibrant color. It started to change from the first time it was washed. I washed it on gentle and it just started to have changes to the texture, it looked thinner and thinner, almost sheer in some spots. Thank you for this video. Good quality clothes are not supposed to feel like throwaways, especially after a few washes. You have opened my eyes that a crammed full closet with "nothing to wear" is often due a closet full of problem pieces!!!

  • @missmayflower
    @missmayflower 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've bought a few of those skirts because I thought they would be such a good staple, then never wore hem. Now I realize it's because they constrict my movement. Sometimes nothing is wrong with the item, but you just have to admit it doesn't work for you. So sorry about your beautiful pieces. I'm so glad you used them for teaching us.

We have all been through things like this and it is nice to know that even someone as well-informed as yourself do have to re-evaluate wardrobe choices now and then. I have also "caught" myself in the mirror and thought that what I was wearing did not look good. As to the Ann Taylor sweater, I would definitely return it! Too much money for something like that to be defective.

Hi Jennifer! Thank you for this video--it made me think! I really like what you said about wanting to look presentable at all times, and that your washed-out blouse won't work under that requirement. So many times, I keep wearing things that haven't held up in the wash because I put money and thought into them, and I shouldn't have to replace them yet. I'm in denial! This video has given me the courage to do without those tired items and see what happens. Thank you!

    • @tawnytuppence5573
      @tawnytuppence5573 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Also, I realized that the two extras and one core item that have been giving me fits need to be retired. It's not helping me stress levels to keep them around. Thanks!

It’s so freeing just getting rid of stuff that does not work with your vision of yourself. I find it to be such a disservice to myself (an insult even) to keep items that make me look shabby when I know better. Getting rid of them frees up so much brainspace💨

Excellent video! Giving away a pair of worn out flats, two tops that have seen their day, and a pair of pants. The pants are similar to your skirt, they stretch out as I'm wearing them and get very baggy. Ahhh, that feels good. 😍👍🏻💖

Jennifer, I empathize. I feel the gap when basics I've depended on and that work with most of my wardrobe either wear out or get damaged in some way. Then there are the scarves I love that get lost or left behind somewhere. In the meantime, I've gathered the wardrobe pieces that work together for the summer, and I'm filling using those basic pieces. And yes, there are still gaps to be filled. Thanks.

I expect more from Ann Taylor and believe they would want you to return it, so they can tell the manufacturer. Somebody goofed and they need to know not to order from that vendor until it's fixed. Thanks again Jennifer! Great job!

  • @MimiNwabuokuMD
    @MimiNwabuokuMD 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Ohhhh, I actually had a "feeling" about that coral top being likely to do poorly in the wash. It's something about that color. It's also quite serendipitous that you have featured an issue with an Ann Taylor piece. You see, I had a fairly new( and oh ,so lovely !) floral dress from Ann Taylor suffer a broken zipper just this weekend. I'm kinda sad as it was one of my favorite core pieces. I've been hunting down the receipt all weekend but so far, no love. I am just going to try my luck and take it back to an outlet today to see if they will be kind enough to honor a replacement regardless of my ( unusually for me, an ex-librarian🗃) mislaid paperwork. Thanks for sharing, Jennifer!

Thanks Jennifer! I am new to the 10 item wardrobe idea and have been watching all you videos about it. I've been clearing my closet like crazy. It's amazing how my clothes looked to me after watching a few of your videos - "why do I still own this?!" Haha. I have bought 2 dresses so far for my spring/summer and have worn a dress or skirt every day for the past week! I am so surprised that I love it but I do! Thanks for the inspiration. I'm sad about your beautiful pink top! :(

Jennifer I purchased a similar cardi from Ann Taylor and the same thing happened when I washed my sweater on delicate and I lay flat to dry. I took it back and received store credit. Sometimes dye lots are faulty and the color runs/fades. Take it back and get something that will work for you.
Love your videos. I say I have begun my 10 item wardrobe because due to an illness I have gained a lot of weight and have few choices with my "fat" clothes...

I have a tip for you Jennifer, I wash my clothes on delicate and pop them in the dryer for 5 minutes no more then hang to finish drying. It works great and I rarely have to iron. Just no more than 5 minutes! They don't shrink and the wrinkles come out nicely.

I agree. I would return the Ann Taylor sweater. I generally get a very good response when I have to do something like that.
Also, I wanted to tell you a funny story about someone that I encountered the other day.
I was at an event for moms and children, when up ahead, I spied the red floral blouse that you bought at TJ Maxx.
"Oh my," I thought. "Jennifer has a blouse like that." The lady was wearing the blouse with a nice pair of khaki shorts and some sandals. She looked quite presentable.
Then I looked a bit closer, and noticed that she was pushing a stroller, and a little boy, about 6 years old, was walking alongside. "Busy mom," I thought. Then I looked closer still, and noticed that the stroller she was pushing was a double version, containing twins. Wow.
As I gained ground and got closer still, I saw that she was wearing a baby carrier, with a little one strapped to her front. WHAAAAT???!!!!
So, I decided that NO ONE has an excuse any more. If this mom, juggling 4 little ones could manage to look presentable, anyone could! :)

Thanks for showing us the process you used to find (and potentially replace) a few problem things. My 10 item wardrobe is going well. I was just on vacation, so I had a different "capsule" wardrobe of things I can't wear where I live. I had 7 core items plus extras, which was plenty of variety for the 2+weeks.

This is my first year trying a capsule wardrobe (between 10 and 15 items), and I am loving it! This year I finally lost enough weight to be able to fit into a dress I made in high school, and it is so neat! I am wearing it now, actually. Going to town in it. When I made it, I wore it to church, but now I just like it for everyday. Because I only wore it to church when I made it, and only in the summer, and then couldn't wear it after I got pregnant with my first, it has lasted nearly two decades. I don't know how many more it will last now that it is a staple in my summer wardrobe, but that's okay.
I have been paying more attention to what I am wearing now, how it fits, how I feel... I need to get a full-length mirror. Either that, or take pictures and and study them. I'm thinking of hiring someone with experience to help me figure out what looks best on me. Also to gradually increase the quality of my wardrobe over time (I can't afford to do it all at once). I'm starting with plans to make a high-quality jean skirt this summer. I have been researching fabric and plan to start next month if possible. My hope is that the skirt will cost under $50 in materials and then last several years.
Indeed, if one doesn't know one's style, having a 10-item wardrobe will accelerate the process of learning!

Bummer about the cardigan! If they don't accept a return, sometime you might consider as a last ditch effort is to find a darker shade of clothing dye (Rit is what I've used) and change dye the sweater. Sometimes it works great and other times not---but worth a try if you love the sweater. Also, another thing I recently decided to do with some of my delicates is to put them inside of a pillowcase and tie a knot at the top--I find that works better than a mesh bag because there is less of a chance the item will snag on the machine. Just sharing because I can relate to your frustration and have had several of my favorite blouses ruined. This really helps--just make sure the knot is nice and tight on the pillowcase:) Love the new skirt on you too!

Hi Jennifer! thank you for sharing your observations and wardrobe problems! In the last weeks of spring and when changing the climate to the more moderated summer one, I've noticed major wardrobe problems! I have a 10 item wardrobe and for the last years I've been using tight pants, but for about a year + now I've been feeling uncomfortable with the tightness and then I have mostly wide/long tops to dissipate the uncomfortableness. Now that I've realised about the problem I'm shifting to altogether more wide pants, that really make me feel comfortable and I feel go better with my actual style, but then I have no tops to go with them, I feel like a bag 😂. And I always feel so stressed when having to buy clothes! Could you please do a video with tips when your wardrobe needs a full change?

I purchased two seersucker sleeveless dresses for part of my 10 item wardrobe. I love the dresses, however I have gotten alot of slack from my in laws, stating why are you wearing old women dresses. I graciously said these are old women dresses they are summer dresses that keep me cool and have a vintage flare. Now I'm second guessing myself it they look OK. I've asked my sister and mom and thry said the dresses are cute and perfect for summer. I'm typically a skirt girl but wanted to incorporate a few dresses into my summer wardrobe this year, just feel uncomfortable wearing them now and debating on keeping them for Sunday only. Love the denim skirt from LLBean!

I have definitely been criticized by someone whose opinion I cared about who said I dressed "old-fashioned" (not in a good way) and it can get to you mentally. But I honestly feel more comfortable in modest clothes and if that is old-fashioned then so be it. Try not to let the criticism get to you.

Blessed 2B Curly I think people can be extremely rude sometimes.... How is it okay to make such negative comments about other people??? I don't understand it. What defines as 'old women dress' anyway? I don't know what that means. We don't all have same style or like the same things & that's what makes us unique. I haven't seen your dresses, but I bet they are very chic & cute. Don't let other people's opinions of what & how you should dress or think affect you. Be a Hepburn in a world of ______ 💕

What is the brand of the t-shirt you are wearing? It is so crisp and lovely. I would pay more for a t-shirt that would stay that presentable after multiple wearings. Maybe you could do a podcast on what to look for in buying quality staples such as this, including brands, how to spot quality details, care instructions and how long they usually last, etc. In the meantime, please do tell. A white t-shirt is such a vital item in a summer wardrobe. I want mine to look like yours!!

I bought the same coral blouse at TJ Maxx (after seeing your original video). No! I have only worn it twice and will now not wear it regularly because of the pilling issue. Rats! It is such a pretty color. This may be a "you get what you pay for" thing. I think it was something like $16.99. Historically clothes at that price point don't last beyond a season or two for me. Great video. Have a great week.

Great video! Jennifer, have you tried BOOM by Cindy Joseph for the le no makeup look? Her philosophy on aging is very Madame Chic! My grandmother, mother and I are all using her line now and we love it. She convinced me to switch from full coverage to a light bb cream with her trio stick products. I purchase my core 10-item wardrobe pieces at second hand/thrift stores, so that when I do find faults in the fabric, how it's made, or that it does not "spark joy" or suit my style and body shape, I don't feel as guilty upon returning them in the end.

I remember thinking that the coral blouse was a little big on you, and that you can deal with, but I'm with you - pilling is a pet peeve of mine. Steaming should not make those marks; I would take that Ann Taylor cardigan back.

Thank you for sharing. Could you please show your steamer and what you look for in a steamer.

Does the sweater have rayon in it? If so, the steam was the problem, like it "melted" the fibers. Love the jean skirt. Looks fabulous. I KNEW the coral shirt was one of your items. It was very pretty but not my favorite on you. My 10 item is coming along. (Just started with Spring/Summer) I thank you so much for your videos and inspiration to lead me to do the 10 items wardrobe. LOVIN LIFE!!!

Hello Jennifer. Could you share where you got your white t-shirt? I find it so hard to find simple, good quality t-shirts. Many thanks for all that you share with us on your channel. So helpful.

Jennifer, I'm sorry the coral top didn't wash well. I think it's a gorgeous color on you and would encourage you to find something higher quality in that color if you can.

I thought that coral top was pretty, but didn't fit you right. I agree that maybe a small would've been better. I also have similar issues with denim pants or jeans. They fit nice as soon as they come out of the dryer, but throughout the day the expand and become baggy and don't fit properly. I like to wear my pants twice before washing, but it's so frustrating when they don't fit half the time!

Jennifer, I have always washed just about every single thing I own on delicate and then hang dry. I noticed that some of my clothes are still shrinking/warping in the wash. I ended up switching to the "hand wash" setting on cold/cold and have had no problems since.

Thanks for your wonderful videos Jennifer. I find them so inspiring. You have probably answered this already but I have 2 daughters, 6 and 8 and I find it tricky to manage their clothes. Do you follow a formula for your children? How would you change things up for children so that their drawers aren't overflowing but they still have enough to wear (even when they need to change their top for the third time due to popsicle stains, a baking incident and who-knows-what)?

Love your t-shirt you're wearing in this video! What are your secrets to maintaining t-shirts like that with wearing it so frequently? Mine end up pilling and just not looking as nice any more. Or do you have a good brand to suggest that holds up well?

Thanks, Jennifer--this video is helping me feel a bit better about getting rid of clothing I've purchased very recently, thought I liked, and found out I didn't. It's quite liberating! These were all pieces I tried on quickly and thought looked good, but ultimately didn't look good when I went to actually wear them. While it did feel like a bit of a waste, I think it reminds me, too, to be a lot more discerning when I'm trying stuff on. To really really really look at myself for more than a few seconds. I don't often do this when trying things on--I go too quickly. I would love to hear if you have any tips on how to evaluate something when you try it on. Thanks!

Similarly, I used to hurry into work early for a bi-annual online sale. Getting a place in the virtual line was almost like a competition for me and I felt I needed to take advantage since the sale only happens twice a year. This past winter I purchased a dress I wore ONCE on Easter. I've realized, it's not even my style! ...It's not even close to my style! I clicked around so quickly when I should have paused to evaluate my purchase. The ten-item wardrobe has really changed my way of thinking!

Could a dry cleaner resolve the marks on the Ann Taylor? If it is not an issue with the dye, maybe a good cleaning might eliminate the need for a new one?

did you try Rit (dye) Color Remover? It looks like something else in the wash bled on it. It's a harsh move chemical wise but it might save the sweater.

I find this with TJ Maxx. The clothes are very hit or miss. I'm trying to focus on the construction and specifically the fabric type. I don't remember if you had said what the material that one top was made out of. Overall though this was good to know, thanks!

I have such a hard time figuring out what should be in my ten item wardrobe. Here's why: I am a homesteading, homeschooling, and nursing mama. I'm also a childbirth educator and doula. I need rough and sturdy clothes for homesteading, but also need professional attire for my classes and clothes suitable for hospital and home births. What's a girl to do?? :) I'd love to hear your thoughts. I also attend church regularly, so I like to look pretty on Sundays. I feel like I need 3 different 10 item wardrobes! ha! Help!
