Back in the old days, we used cheap clear wax from the grocery stores, melted it in empty coffee cans on the bbq pit. We colored some of it with old crayon stubs, added interesting decor items to the candles... shells, rocks, etc... They were funky diy candles for sure. Yours look so much more refined and beautiful. Btw, we had the same problem, but our wicks came in a roll. We tied them to sticks and melted some wax in the bottom of the candle to affix it. We made many different colored layers and never had a problem pouring new wax on top of hardened wax. You brought back a lot of fond memories thanks.

That sounds like fun. I thought about adding something on the sides of the jar, but didn't know how to do it.... Maybe next time. It just gave me such a thrill to actually make candles. 😊

When I used to make candles, I use popcicle sticks with holes in the middle to center my wicks.

You guessed right. Beeswax is a product made from the honeycomb of the honeybee and other bees. The mixing of pollen oils into honeycomb wax turns the white wax into a yellow or brown color.
If you had put a little wax on the middle of the stick and stuck the wick to the wax it would have worked.

The new wax is initially glass-clear and colorless, becoming opaque after chewing and being contaminated with pollen by the hive worker bees, becoming progressively yellower or browner by incorporation of pollen oils and propolis.

I'm a little late to the party, but that was really interesting! I bet they smell amazing. If you like working with essential oils, and if you want a whole new obsession, you might look into cold-process soapmaking. You can incorporate products from your farm such as beeswax, goat's milk, lavender & other herbs. It's a whole new world of creativity, experimentation and fun! Another avenue could be lip balms, body butters & salves. But be warned, once you start, you won't be able to stop!

@@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764 It's very rewarding, but I'd caution anyone venturing into it to research thoroughly, and to not even think about selling until they've got a safe and time-tested product. It's an art but it's also very much a science, using ingredients that can be harmful or even fatal, such as lye (sodium hydroxide) and essential oils (some of which can be harmful if inhaled or if used topically in the wrong concentration). There's been an explosion of "natural" soap & skin care products in the past 10-20 years, many of which are substandard or dangerous. I'm not sure about the US regulations, but in Canada all formulae must be registered with Health Canada. I don't know that a lot of small operations selling at craft fairs or those with a small online presence, etc. are adhering to this, as I'm seeing some pretty scary labels and products out there. For instance, if a body butter or lotion contains water as an ingredient, which most do unless it's a strictly oils-based body butter, proper chemical preservatives should be used or harmful bacteria can develop. "Natural" preservatives can be ineffective or useless. If a soap formula is not exact, there can be free (extra) lye that has not been saponifiied in the bar, which can dry or even burn the skin when used. Anyone considering this line should contact their insurance company re: liabilty. Also, the fire department needs to know if an address has quantities of lye on the premises, as adding water to lye causes a serious chemical reaction which can be explosive and a very real hazard to firefighters. (In soapmaking one gently, carefully adds lye to water, never the other way around. And this is done in a well-ventilated place with proper safety protection.)
I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from this very rewarding activity, but I'd recommend finding an established online soapmakers forum, and read, read, read the different sections, study the archives, ask questions, and make sure you've made a good number of safe batches that you've let cure longer than recommended to be sure no issues arise. Sorry for the missive, but I think it's important. I'll get off my "soapbox" now, and do have fun if you get into it!😀

Hi again! I posted quite a long reply here yesterday to the above response you gave me, and I don't see it showing up in the comments. I can see it on my you tube account, but when my husband logs into his, it says there are 2 replies to my original comment, but only one (your reply) is visible. I was putting forward that it's a hobby that requires extensive research and that there are health, safety and liability factors to consider. I posted this so anyone reading would be aware that it's a serious undertaking and to fully educate and protect themselves. Perhaps this is just a you tube glitch, but if you did see that reply and decided to delete it from the conversation, I would like to delete my original comment as well, as I believe the follow-up information is important. thanks and all the best! @@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764

@@maggieh791 Hello. I got notified of today's post, but not of the one from yesterday. I pulled up this video and can see the comment, but usually TH-cam notifies me of comments. (glitch?) I wouldn't delete any kind of comment like that. I only delete ones that contain 'nasty' or offensive stuff. (Luckily we've only gotten 1-2 of those) I am aware of all of the complexities of soap making and it sounds a bit scary to me...specifically the lye. Thanks very much for responding. I didn't think you would take down anything that contained safety information! I wondered if there might have been some flagged words in it that You Tube didn't like or something...If you do ever decide to take the plunge into soaping, I'd be happy to direct you to a few resources that were invaluable to me; hopefully they're still active. I was at my heyday in soaping when I was also working full time and our daughters were young teens; one of them loved it, and the other resented how it took over our house and cramped her style by having to help out at markets & shows. My husband had the patience of Job, let me tell you! I haven't soaped for over 15 years and I still have lots of bars on hand! We're really enjoying your videos & your journey, and marvel at your energy & how much you've both learned in such a short time. All the best from Ontario!😊 @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764

Helpful tips…… over 180 degrees is burnt wax, don’t boil your water~ slow and steady wins the race for beeswax~ takes longer to melt but you don’t want to over heat your wax. And when you’re pouring your wax from one container to the next ~ one pot is hot and one was cold ~ should warm up both. Beeswax doesn’t take fragrance well but you did add coconut oil so that will help. and it sounds like a lot of fragrance oil but that’s what it takes especially for BW. Yes cueing takes a long time 14 days for BW. That’s why he was able to break those pieces of BW ~ not hardened/cured. Some people say burn as soon as it’s hardened (Next day) but it will just burn shorter time since wax is still softer. Yes essential oil are completely different than fragrance oils. So you should not even put in candles. Looks like you hand fun and that’s the important thing! 😊
