    Great knot. Been using it for decades. Only issue I've found is when pulling through any weeds or debris in water some inherently snags on tag end cut since it's sticking up towards your rod. Snell is better for not grabbing things. If you're fishing clean ground and water this knot is fantastic
    I also use it for a minimum bottom fishing rig. Make tag line as long as you want the hook to be from your sinker and place sinker in main knot. Great for Toutag where they'll spook at too much hardware.

  • @bilgeratjim

    With smaller tackle, it's much easier to simply put the working end of the line through the eye, and then back through the eye, forming the loop. Also, lubricate your line with some spit before cinching it tight.

    I learned this knot at a Berkeley fishing gear demonstration, they had a line knot testing machine and were inviting people to tie their favorite knots and see how they hold up. Surprisingly many knots made the like break at a lower strength than rated, but this knot was the strongest by far and you can tie it blindfolded in your sleep. I really only use three knots for fishing. Uni knot, Palomar and "7 twist through the loop" we used to call it. Just found your channel great stuff man.

    When do you use the Palomar knot vs the uni knot or clinch knot etc to tie to hook/TA clip/lure etc? For stripers for instance, which knot works best with the abuse it gets... (as a reference, I am tying usually my 40 lb fluorocarbon onto my clip or whatever as my leader coming from 30 lb braid, so some knots feel cumbersome to tie with leader that thick) .... what do you recommend?

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Kyle I'm sorry for the late reply!
      Short answer: Uni knot for me.
      In my experience with salmon and steelhead fishing, you honestly can't go wrong with either knot! The Palomar is typically considered a stronger knot over the uni knot. However, I personally do find it cumbersome to tie the Palomar in more instances over the Uni. But here is the thing with comparing these two knots... When you cast out the Palomar knot or cast out the Uni knot, which knot do you just feel confident in? If you have confidence in how you tied the knot, you can't go wrong with either choice. I hope this helps!

  • @Rose.Of.Hizaki
    @Rose.Of.Hizaki ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For braid, it is suggested that you use a _'double palomar'_ knot to prevent any potential slipping. I mean the knot itself is already super strong but adding a second _'overhand'_ at 1:58 before looping it over the hook and synching down will make it even stronger and the knot is so simple to tie that adding the extra overhand doesnt take any extra time to tie.
    Your call however - its how i was taught and my hooks tend to bend or break before i lose any lures to underwater snags.

      You should stick to the original way and actually it's probably the easiest and strongest knots you'll ever find and you'll put more stress where it's not needed just stick to the original way because if it works why fix it. I've used this knot for years and never came undone plus the whole point of the knot is in the strength and simplicity of it.

    You tied both in different ways of the last part of the line. On the 1st tie with the last part of the line you tied at the bottom and on the 2nd tie you ended up tying the last line at the TOP. Which is the correct way?

      I see what your talking about, I apologize for the inconsistency. The main goal is to make sure the loop at the end of the process is above the hook eye. I would aim for the way it looks with the actual braided line demo, the second time around. But either way the knot will work perfect. Hope this answers your question, and thanks for the comment!

    What knot do you recommend for Fluorocarbon line to hook?

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say the Palomar knot, or the Trilene Knot.

  • @robertlosasso4222
    @robertlosasso4222 ปีที่แล้ว

    The palomar knot is very good, I think the trilene knot is equal to it .

    When you lub these knots are you using saliva to do that? Just curious because saliva has enzymes and that will weaken the knot and line.

    Looks like a good one. Definitely a lot of waste though with that long tag end

    So I started using Palomar to rig a drop shot, however, my hook's not setting up perpendicular, despite coming back through the eye w tag end. Is it because my knot's not setting on top of the eye??

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to really know. My guess is It could be that the hook is just a bit heavy and the line cant hold it perpendicular. It could be the pound test line also is to light potentially . In my experience it doesn't have to be perfectly perpendicular, just out enough to keep the bait off your dropper line. I hope this helps!

      What kind of hook are you using ? If there's a break in the eye and its not solid it can throw the angle of the hook on the line . Now I've noticed it but its not caused me any problems once in the water .

    Should I use this knot for the sinker as well?

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You definitely can! I personally prefer a knot like the surgeons loop knot. This way you can change the weight out if needed.

    only time I don't use the palomar knot is when it's impossible. like when tying a leader to the distal end of a swivel...but for sure the rod side of that swivel has a palomar knot holding it on!

    Does it matter which direction the tag end points when initially threading through the eye or which direction (from the front or from the back) that you loop over the full hook from?

    • @omgitsme435
