THANK YOU SO MUCH. I was screwing around with my dads knife and hit a can that was full at close range. He wasn't home at the time and all my siblings just sat there waiting for him to get home to see what happened. He never found out. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this video. My girlfriend thought she broke her knife on her birthday and was super upset as we tried to fix it for like 30 minutes. As soon as i found this video it was instantly fixed, and the birthday was saved, so thanks.
I know what you mean. The first time I did this...over a decade ago, I looked at it and said, hum, now how do I fix that? So the first thing I tried was pulling the blade all the way out, ha. It does not take a neurosurgeon to figure this one out.
I did the exact same think literally 5 minutes after playing with my knife for the first time. I panicked, searched TH-cam for “AKC F16 knife fix,” found this video and all is right again. Thank you! 👍
You are an absolute genius! My cheap OTF fell out of my pocket, when I picked it up, the blade was free floating. It wasn't expensive, but would be a fast, reliable tool to get someone off of me if I can't get to my sidearm. I took it apart, expecting it to fly to pieces when I separated the casing, but it didn't. I didn't see anything broken, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to function. Then I remembered, you can figure out how to fix ANYTHING on TH-cam. Your video was the first I came to, thankfully. Thank you! You now have a new subscriber.
I hear this a lot. "Its a safety measure". It's not. The reason for the amount of spring tension is that if they made the springs strong enough to shoot the blade through your hand, you wouldn't have the thumb strength to push the button forward. There are two latches that come down hold the blade in the open or closed position. If something gets in the way the latch will not drop into a groove and hold the blade in position. The blade doesn't weigh much so the springs don't have to be very strong to move the blade forward or backwards.
Wait wait wait… What?!! It’s not that the springs are weak it’s a safety feature so if by some miracle the button is activated and the knife opens in your pocket it doesn’t skew your leg or stomach. The Microtech Halo will open and go through your hand and into your chest! It’s a single action OTF knife, you retract the blade and cock the spring using a handle on the bottom of the knife. That model doesn’t have the safety feature and will push your hand away from the tree and go into your leg or chest if it opens in your pocket.
@@88997799 no it's not lmao sure it can work as a safety feature but it's not intended to be because if you buy a good one it will never missfire in your pocket

No, just this kind of specific question which you should be able to figure out when you have half a brain (EVEN if you are 10). I mean, if you are interested in a knife like this I assume that A: you know something about it B: are able to find an answer on internet or C: this is something you kind of figure out for yourself experimenting a little and doing some basic troubleshooting / problem solving? I felt the same (already a longer time ago) with a question Jeff addressed about how to replace a flint in a Zippo or something similar, people send messages to him about how to do this stuff...come on.
Dependent on the problem. Although your comparing a simple spring mechanism to an engine. Not a good comparison. Good luck with your mechanical engineering though mate.
As with the last post I did it in the first five minutes and looking for a video how to take it apart and try to fix it. Your video is a lifesaver. THANK YOU so much.
Thanks for making this video -- it was super helpful. I haven't watched a video or honestly even looked at the inner workings of an OTF knife before. As a few other commenters said, I dropped it within an hour of owning it and this happened. My first thought was, "well this is a piece of trash," and now I know it was just operator error and my own ignorance. But not anymore!
Same thing happened to mine just minutes after I bought it and I was so upset thinking it was broken…. It’s been months now and tried this and it works again!! 🤯 thank you sir!!

I honestly would consider this more of a pro than a con because it serves as a safety mechanism, just in case it opens up on you by accident. If you really want to stab something then open the blade how you should open it and stab it. Not a big deal.
I did this with a MT Hellhound clone I got the very first time I triggered it, against nothing, but it still broke. So I took it apart and created another problem. Then I just got a Lightning and tried to send the blade through a roll of paper towels. Looked up your fix and I was able to get the fake MT back together and fix both blades with your trick. OMG! I cant like this video enough! I found a sweet Microtech OTF in a public bathroom sink (I know, thats shady) but anyway I looked into the value, which was right around $180ish. Plz read this I need help!; my da otf knife was fine now all of a sudden every time I retract the blade it keeps de-railing and I mean EVERYTIME it’s really getting annoying someone please help me
Sounds like he didn’t know how to retract the blade. However the halo model will open and go through your hand or into your chest. Single action doesn’t have the safety feature.
well it's energy conservation, you are providing the energy to charge the spring with your thumb and that's not a lot of energy... to actually punch trough your hand you would need way stronger springs.. which means you couldn't charge it with your thumb.
I'm pretty sure how the mechanism works it isn't "derailing" from anything. Instead the springs are at rest when you start to slide the trigger and you are by doing that building tension. Once a certain point in the trigger movement is reached the blade is unlocked from the inside of the handle at the bottom, and more so "tossed" forward, where it then locks back in once it is all the way out. same for back in. So its more similar to you throwing a football at a brick wall, and the football stopping, because of the brick wall, than a train being derailed of of tracks or something. I was thinking of the physics of this while playing around with my lightening a while back. I can hold my arm out in front of me, knife in hand, blade pointing up, and start to swing my arm downward windmill style, and at the right moment start to retract the blade, while increasing the speed of the swing, and actually "derail" the blade pretty consistently, just from essentially speeding up the actual handle of the knife enough that the blade can't keep up. It's not too hard really, but can take a little practice to get the timing.
Well said also. It's the same principle with people that actually think taking a shotgun blast, or any gun shot for that matter, to the chest can launch a man backwards, if that were possible then the recoil from the butt of the gun would also launch a shooter of similar mass backwards as well.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Got one a month or two ago and I haven't done it because I didn't want to break something but my wife saw it and tried to put a hole in a paper plate and this happened... I’m laughing so hard because this is exactly what I did. Figured it wasn’t broken but was a spring issue. But I took it apart and couldn’t figure it out! THANK YOU.
Holy smokes, I'm glad i looked this up. I decided to open the blade to an empty plastic bottle and then it did this. I thought it was game over lmao. Thanks for the help!
What do I do if I have issues with it doing this when deploying? Would boiling the spring to regain retention work, or will I have to shorten the spring by a couple loops?
It's not necessarily the springs they are made with a clutch that disengages the blade from the carrier. It's pretty much a safety feature. Love your videos keep it up brother.
Thank you so much for this! You saved me from looking stupid and taking my knife back into the store. Plus, you were hilarious, so it was fun to watch.
when i was about 12 yrs old, i was at a diving camp in cologne germany. we went into an army shop and were instantly thrown out for being under age. 2 doors down we purchased otf knives at a souvenir shop. Man, those were the days :) Ofcourse we did try this stuff, even shooting into hand after seeing it didnt go through paper even. But i remember this fix was something we immediately found out. Or even better, we just held it up to let the blade slide back in the hilt, and then snapped it in place with a medium firm flick of the handle. Still works to this day, some 30++ years later :)
I got one today, and I laughed my ass off when you said “you’re gonna wanna see if I can go through something. So maybe you tried it with cardboard”. That’s exactly what happened

I got an SOS OTF today for a gift, and immediately thought it broke when trying to shoot through paper. Thank goodness I found this video.
I just feel bad for the people that couldn’t figure this out themselves .
It works !! Amazing. Thank you!
So we have to go to TH-cam to find ways to make it work. That system is not reliable at all.
I've got an AKC F16 and neither manufacturer or seller do not provide any assistance.
I've bought one auto knife just out of curiosity but definetly not serious for daily use.
didnt work for me :(
You are the best... Bought this for my friend and I 'broke' it. Thank you for the easy fix!!
"pull it all the way out"
Last time I did that, I was arrested.
I’m laughing so hard because this is exactly what I did. Figured it wasn’t broken but was a spring issue. But I took it apart and couldn’t figure it out! THANK YOU.
I figured this out in 30 seconds messing with my dads otf
Holy smokes, I'm glad i looked this up. I decided to open the blade to an empty plastic bottle and then it did this. I thought it was game over lmao. Thanks for the help!

You sir are a life saver 😱😱😱 I was about to run to the store and buy another one 😂 - also I subscribed & liked this video !
You lebay 😁
Okay seriously, people who can't figure out by themselves how to fix this "problem" should not be allowed to own a knife. Not even a butter knife.
you wanna buy a $250 knife cheap? that didn't work
What do I do if I have issues with it doing this when deploying? Would boiling the spring to regain retention work, or will I have to shorten the spring by a couple loops?
It's a "Feature" not a problem.
It's not necessarily the springs they are made with a clutch that disengages the blade from the carrier. It's pretty much a safety feature. Love your videos keep it up brother.
Why did I do this almost immediately after I bought it I thought it was broken but then I found this Thanks for doing these vids man
Thank you so much for this! You saved me from looking stupid and taking my knife back into the store. Plus, you were hilarious, so it was fun to watch.
You are just awesome. Thank you. I have the same knife. I already knew what to do in this instance but I just wanted to say that you are AWESOME!
Just did this and I took apart the whole damn thing for nothing lol. You sir get a follow.
when i was about 12 yrs old, i was at a diving camp in cologne germany. we went into an army shop and were instantly thrown out for being under age.
Lol I just bought mine at a gun show a couple hours ago and this just happened. I was devastated bc I spent 125. Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you for the help! I did this 2 minutes after it was out of the box and I started panicking that it was broke. Thanks!
I got one today, and I laughed my ass off when you said “you’re gonna wanna see if I can go through something. So maybe you tried it with cardboard”. That’s exactly what happened
My first OTF knife arrives in the mail tomorrow. This video just saved me from a potential Oh Shit moment.
Holy shit how are you a literal knife psychic, The way you described my situation was so comically perfect 😅 thank you so much for helping exactly correctly!!!
lol I only know becase it was a lot of people including me a long time ago :) im glad you found the video and it helped...
LOL. I just broke my OTF within 10 minutes of owning it. Easy fix thanks to this video.
U saved my life I was about to drive all the way back to the store and return it.
bro you’re a legend i was so scared for a minute😅😅
Same
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so worried but you saved the day.
Holy Crap
Just got a new Microtech OTF knife, and my Dumb Ass did this. Then I went into panic mode. I opened up the knife and nothing seemed to make sense of how the blade goes in & out. Thank you for posting this vid. Now my knife is back to normal
Haaa , you cracked me up when you did... ohhh nooo 🤯I Broke My Knife 🔪... It took me less than a minute to do just that. Haa, went to your channel an BAM! No disassembly required THANKS DUDE... I went From Bamboozled to Inlighted in just a few minutes...Good to the point Video.
I had this problem 30min after I got mine. Thank you!🎉
You can also flip the switch to the down position and shake it down hard and it clicks back in. I did it in the parking lot after driving 2 feetaway from buying it and as I was turning around to go ask the guy who I bought it from if he knew how to fix it, I just shook it hard once with the button down and it worked right away.
Boy, do I feel like an idiot! Lmao. Literally did what you said in the video, "hmm let me see if it'll poke through" lol. Panicked a bit when it stopped working, took knife apart like an idiot and it STILL didn't fix it lol. Thank you for this video haha.
