I'm Ananda Fathiyyah Utami. Great! Thank you so much for the explanation. Now I know Meta-textual function is all about how the text is put together, especially the main theme or the first part of a sentence. The theme isn't always the big message of the text, but it's the important info that kicks things off. These themes follow certain unspoken rules about what should start a sentence. We kind of do this automatically when we write, and by studying how a text is organized, you can spot these rules. Breaking it down, a text's structure involves things like phrases and nouns, and you can mix these around without totally changing what it's saying. Even though authors get to choose how they end a sentence, the beginning part (the theme) follows these set rules for what should start a sentence.

Hi, I’m Muhammad Fajar. I really appreciate how you explained it comprehensively but easy to understand.
For other audiences, I think I’d like to sum up your explanation. Here you explain about textual metafunction, which is the organization of texts. In texts, especially clauses, there is theme. Theme is the first element of a clause. The element can be from any class, likr noun, adjectives, adverbs, literally anything as long as it is located at the first clause. Thus, in some cases, theme can also be a subject of a clause.
Learning about themes in textual metafunction is important since it has a crucial role in creating a cohesive texts. It allows us to see hoe a clause is organized in relation to the parts of the text that came before it. Moreover, there is two kinds of theme, marked and unmarked. Marked theme is when the theme and the subject of a clause is different, while the unmarked theme is the otherwise. A marked theme is considered better and interesting since it often makes some information more prominent. Thus, it could be said that marked themes in clauses are more recommended.
Anyway, thanks for giving the clear explanation in the video!

Hi, I'm Yoshinta Nur Prihatina. The explanation about textual metafunction above is clear enough for me, such an interesting explanation! What I can conclude is that this text emphasizes that the order in which elements appear in a sentence is not random but follows certain rules. It provides an example of how elements can be rearranged in a sentence while maintaining the same meaning. The first element in a clause, called the theme, plays a crucial role in conveying the message. The text encourages understanding these rules for effective communication. The theme is the first element of a clause, and it's not necessarily the same as the subject or the main topic of the sentence.
The video above also provides examples to show that the same information can be presented in different ways, and people often prefer one organization over another based on how well it flows or connects. The underlying idea is that there are patterns or rules that govern how we choose the theme in our writing and speech, even if we're not always consciously aware of them.

Hello I'm Azzahra Nabila, that was an interesting topic of the video. The whole idea of themes and rhemes in textual metafunction strikes me as quite fascinating. Themes, which often come first in a sentence, essentially provide a starting point with old or known information. It's like a hook for readers, making it easier to understand how the text is organized. Now, the concept of marked themes, those that break from the usual subject-first structure, really piqued my interest. They add a bit of flair, capturing attention and prompting us to question why the author made that choice. It's like a creative twist in writing, making texts more engaging and thought-provoking.
On the other hand, rhemes follow themes, bringing in new or less-known information. It's like the plot unfolding in a story, providing fresh insights. What I find particularly intriguing is how authors use references and ellipsis to maintain simplicity and coherence in their writing. It's like connecting the dots, helping readers follow the flow of the text. Understanding themes and rhemes, to me, seems like a key to unlocking the magic of text structure and organization, impacting how we interpret and appreciate the written word.
This video serves as a valuable resource for anyone seeking to expand their knowledge in the field of language. Kudos to the author for their outstanding work!

Hi, I'm Alvina Ryan Fatiha. After watching this video, I have gained quite a lot of new knowledge. This video explores the concept of textual metafunction, with a particular focus on "theme" in a clause. Theme serves as the starting point of a clause and establishes the topic of the clause, while the rheme provides additional information about the topic. The teacher discusses the rules that govern theme selection, emphasizing that the theme is not always the subject or main focus of the clause; the choice depends on previous information in the text. The video introduces the idea of “markedness,” categorizing themes as “unmarked” or common and “marked” or typical. Semantic value, repetition, and pronunciation are also highlighted as key elements in understanding textual metafunctions. This lesson is part of the systemic functional linguistics series, making it valuable for those interested in text and discourse analysis.

Hi, my name is Regga Navratilova first of all I would like to say thank you for making the video it really helps. I would like to summarize the video above based on my understanding.
The video delves into textual meta-function, emphasizing the importance of the theme as the starting point in a clause. Regardless of its role as subject, object, or adverb, the theme remains consistent in meaning, often revealing time or acting as the sentence's subject. The link between theme placement and text coherence is stressed for maintaining flow and unity. Additionally, it explores signification in linguistics, especially in attention-catching elements like gender in language. Marked and unmarked forms in language, specifically in textual themes, impact what stands out for readers or listeners, with the unmarked theme (usually the subject) aiding in making the narrative clearer.

    @nad9790 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi, I'm Nur Azizah. From what I've gathered by watching the video, the "theme" in textual metafunction refers to the initial word or phrase in a clause. This element serves as the starting point of the message and positions the clause within its context. It's subject to specific rules: (1) the theme isn't always the subject of the clause, (2) it's not necessarily the main focus of the clause, and (3) the choice of theme depends on prior information in preceding clauses. This helps readers understand how a clause fits into the text, either creating a natural connection or not. Importantly, the theme doesn't always have to be an exact repetition of earlier information, as long as it's linguistically related.
Additionally, there's the concept of "markedness," which denotes something distinctive and easily noticeable. There are two aspects to this concept: "unmarked," representing the usual, common, and neutral meaning, and "marked," representing the unusual, less common, and more specific meaning. When applied to clauses, the unmarked practice is to place the subject as the first element, while the marked practice is to position something other than the subject first. In unmarked themes, the subject and the theme are the same, while in marked themes, they differ, making the clause more prominent.

Hii there, I'm Ibrohim Daarut Tauhid. In my opinion, this video effectively delves into the linguistic concept of 'theme' within the context of textual metafunction. It provides a structured and comprehensible explanation of how the initial element in a sentence or clause, known as the 'theme,' plays a crucial role in shaping sentence structure. The video employs practical instances to demonstrate how sentences can be reorganized while preserving their fundamental meaning. This approach aids the audience in realizing that the 'theme' isn't necessarily the primary subject of a sentence but pertains to the arrangement of sentence components. All in all, this video serves as a valuable educational tool that simplifies a potentially intricate linguistic concept.
From my perspective, this video offers a lucid and insightful elucidation of the 'theme' concept in linguistic terminology, especially within the realm of textual metafunction. The provided examples and explanations are well-organized, facilitating viewers' comprehension of the mechanics behind sentence structure. The inclusion of real-life examples, such as the reordering of sentences, enhances the video's clarity. In summary, it serves as an informative and educational resource that demystifies an aspect of language that may initially appear complex. Thank you for this valuable video.

Hi! I'm Nurhalisa. What a great explanation! As a student, this video really helps me in understanding the textual metafunction. Anyway, What I have learned from your explanation is that 'theme' is not the same as the 'theme' in literature or film. The theme in metafunction is more like the first element of the clause, and sometimes called as 'micro theme' or 'clause theme'. Furthermore, there are also the explanation about the concept of marked and unmarked, in which the unmarked has usual, dominant, common and neutral meaning, while the marked one is just the opposite of the unmarked, which is less usual, uncommon, weaker, and so on. However, these all actually are new insights for me. Thank you.

Hello I'm Mikael Teguh Prasetyo, that was a great explaination. This video effectively analyzes the linguistic concept of 'theme' as it relates to textual meta-functions. The video provides an organized and simple explanation of how the first element in a sentence or clause, known as the 'theme,' influences sentence building. The video shows how sentences can be altered while preserving their essential meaning by using real examples. This method helps viewers grasp that the 'theme' of a phrase is not often the main topic, but rather the structure of sentence pieces. Overall, the video is an excellent educational resource that clarifies potentially difficult linguistic topics.

Greetings, I'm Dafele Arozal. Thank you for the fruitful textual metafunction discussion.
The textual meta function is a linguistic discussion of how texts are organized. The theme is the first element of a clause, which can be a word or a phrase, and it is what controls the choice of theme for subsequent clauses. The theme is not the same as the literary theme, which refers to the overall message of a novel or film. Rather, the theme in textual meta function refers to the organization of a clause. We expect themes to contain old information or previously given information, which makes a connection to something that came earlier in the text. The connection must be semantically meaningful and not too far back in the text, or else the reader may lose track of the organization. The textual meta function is important for understanding how texts are structured and how to effectively communicate information.
The discussion of theme allows us to see how each clause is organized in relation to what came before, which controls the choice of theme for subsequent clauses. There are rules or patterns that govern what we put first in a clause, and we follow these patterns when we speak or write, even if we are not aware of them. The theme is the first element of the clause, and it can be marked or unmarked depending on whether it is the same as the subject.
The textual meta function is important for understanding how texts are structured and how to effectively communicate information. By understanding the rules and patterns that govern the choice of theme, we can create well-organized and effective texts. In a story for children, it is important to keep the organization simple and not too complicated. By following the patterns of textual meta function, we can create stories that are easy for children to follow and understand.

Hello, I'm Callista Aulia Nugraha. I would like to thank you for the very informative and insightful video about the linguistic concept of 'theme' and 'rheme' in relation to the textual metafunction. As you've mentioned, the concept of 'theme' in linguistic is quite different than in its concept in literature.
In linguistics, theme is an important aspect to consider when organizing a clause within a sentence, how it is the starting point of a sentence, and how it must relate to previous informations within the text. Meanwhile, the rheme is whatever comes after it. What a great explanation!! and I find it fascinating that theme can help us in organizing sentences and making sure that the meanings and emotions are conveyed well in a language.

I'm Dzohiroh Fathiah Al-Haq. According to me, the video discussed in depth the subject of theme and rheme. Sentence structure and communication depend heavily on the theme and rheme. The theme presents the subject or provides background information. The theme must come first in a phrase or clause; it is the first element, followed by the rheme. Writing and speaking are made more coherent and clear by this basic structure. It makes it simple for the listener or reader to follow the information's flow and comprehend the main point being made. The video evaluate the material being given and comprehend how it connects to the main idea by determining the theme and rheme in a sentence. This makes it easier for us to understand the text and determine its intended meaning. Theme and Rheme are essential parts of the textual metafunction..

Hi! My name is Anggita Windahaya Fatiha and I would give a brief opinion. From the explanation above I could get more information about the organization of the text. The first part is the theme which relates to the textual meta function. The theme provides the initial point with familiar information to attract the readers so that it could be easier for them to understand the organization of the text. The theme is the first element of the clause. This video also talked about markedness, where it showed us how to emphasize informations using another ways. Markedness is unusual yet interesting because markedness is about something that is easy to get noticed or is easy to catch the readers attention. It is interesting to know that theme is the first thing that lead about the content that the text is going to talk. This needs the ability of the author to make an organized text based on the theme.
Thank you so much for your explanation. I am looking forward to your other videos!

Hello, I'm Jose, after seeing the video. Thank you for introducing the subject of textual metafunction to me; it is now evident. According to what I've learned from this video, the textual metafunction is the order of the text, and the theme is the first word in a clause. The theme and rheme are important textual metafunction components that aid in the organization of the message within and between sentences. The theme always comes first in a clause because there are set norms that govern which one appears first. The theme is defined by certain laws that we follow when we talk or write, and these rules can be determined by understanding grammar. The textual meta function is concerned with how texts are ordered, and it is critical to understand.

Hi, I’m Aprilian Risky, That was a good video topic. I find the concept of themes and rhemes in literary metafunction to be really intriguing. Themes, which are frequently the first in a phrase, basically provide previous or known material a place to start. It acts as a sort of hook for readers, making it simpler for them to comprehend the structure of the text. Now, what really caught my attention was the idea of marked themes-those that deviate from the conventional subject-first framework. They give a little flair, drawing our attention and making us wonder why the author chose that particular course of action. Texts become more interesting and thought-provoking as a result of this creative spin on writing.
Themes, on the other hand, incorporate fresh or little-known material by following themes. It offers new insights, much like how a story's storyline develops. The way writers employ ellipses and allusions to keep their work coherent and simple intrigues me much. It helps readers follow the text's flow by acting as though they are connecting the dots.
I believe that comprehending themes and rhemes is essential to revealing the secrets of text organisation and structure, which influence our ability to read, comprehend, and value written language. For those who wish to increase their language proficiency, this film is an invaluable tool. Bravo to the author for your exceptional

Hi, I'm Gana. In my opinion, this video explains us about the importance of understanding the theme to construct a text. Theme itself is starting point of the message. It also locates and orients the clause within its text. So, when we want to connect sentences and try to emphasize a point from the previous message, we have to watch which theme we have to use.

Hi, I'm Magdalena Agustin. According to the speaker's explanation of textual metafunction, it is related to how the text is organized. The textual part refers to the arrangement of the sentences in the text, here, using the book by Jeff Thompson about the introduction of functional grammar. The text contains a theme that covers the overall message, but the things that are discussed in this context is about the sentence structure. The different parts of the clause will be broken down into constituents, then it needs to be labeled according to the grammatical function. In conclusion, the theme in the context of textual metafunction is controlled by certain rules that we follow in spoken or written form to decide what we should put first in a clause.

Hi, I am Fryda Aulia. Thank you for making a video that effectively discusses the importance of theme and rheme in textual meta-function, which refers to how text is organized. The theme is the first element in a clause, not necessarily the first word. Despite the possibility of slight variations in phrasing, the sentence's significance remains unchanged. On the other hand, rheme refers to the second part of a clause that elaborates on the theme. The video also illustrates the linguistic concept called markedness. The video clearly shows how language can use marked and unmarked forms to draw attention to specific information. This concept encompasses two forms: unmarked, which signifies something usual, familiar, and neutral in meaning, and marked, which denotes something specific, unique, and more detailed in definition. Thank you for the clear explanation.

My name is Cerah Kuntum and i would like to summarize the video above based on my understanding. In the video, the speaker address the concept of textual metafunction which refers to how texts are organized. The first element of a clause is called the theme, which is what comes first and is controlled by certain rules that we follow when we speak or write. The speaker gives the example of the sentence "For centuries yellow canaries have been used to test the air in mining" and shows how the same elements can be rearranged into different patterns without changing the meaning. The speaker emphasizes that even if someone doesn't know the grammatical terms, they can still identify the first element by getting a feel for it, such as in the case of the phrase "for centuries."

    @user-hs4kh6hj5h 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi! I'm Nada Kamila, and here are a few points I learned from this video.
A sentence is made up of different elements put together, and these elements can be organized in different ways without changing the meaning. The first element of a sentence is called a theme, sometimes can be called micro theme or clause theme. But this does not equal the subject, which means what the clause is about.
When we speak or write there are patterns that we are familiar with, leading to the organization of a text. And there are reasons why certain organizations of text are better than others. One can be because we expect themes to contain ‘old’ or ‘previously given’ information, from the previous sentence to the next, something that connects one sentence to another.
The concept of marked and unmarked is common in linguistics. The term marked are things that are more noticeable or unusual, while unmarked is the usual form. For example, the sentence, “They went to dinner last night.” is unmarked, as it is something we learn of when forming sentences. But the sentence would still make sense if it were, “Last night they went to dinner.” but we would call this sentence marked because of how unusual it is. But if a writer uses the second sentence there might be a reason why, and it could be to highlight certain information and make it more prominent. In the concept of theme, unmarked theme is when the subject and there are the same. Marked theme is when the subject and theme are different.
Thank you so much, sir, your explanation makes this topic very easy to understand!

Hi, I'm Rahel Meirza. Your video is very interesting. My lecturer sent me the video as the material and I learned a lot from it.
So, what I get from the video is that theme is the first element of the clause, but it is not always positioned as the first word of the clause. Also, themes is not always 'what the clause is about' and the choice of theme is influenced by the information given in the previous clauses which makes the text cohesive. The theme doesn't always have to repeat previous information but should be lexically connected.
Also, concept of marked and unmarked themes also is discussed in the video. Unmarked is the usual and common meaning, and the marked is the unusual and specific meaning. In the context of clause, unmarked is placing the subject as the first element, that makes the subject and theme is the same. While marked is putting other words before a subject, which makes the clause has different subject and theme.
    Thank you.

Hello, I am Dinda Nur Afianty. Thank you for the explanation about the theme in textual metafunction, it's clear enough for me. As far as I got from this video, I can conclude that the arrangement of the text is known as the textual metafunction, and the theme is the first word in a clause. The theme and rheme are important components of the textual metafunction, and they help organize the message within and between clauses. The theme always comes first in a clause because there are organized rules that determine which one comes first. The theme is ruled by certain rules that we follow when we speak or write, and these rules can be identified by understanding grammar. The theme, which can be the first word or phrase in a clause, is its main element. The theme conveys some meaning about the text, such as time or location. The same elements in a clause can be rearranged into different patterns, and the meaning remains the same. However, the way the clauses are structured may change the impact and emphasis of the text. Understanding the rules of the theme and textual metafunction can help improve writing and communication skills.

Hi, I'm Sabrina. Correct me if I'm wrong, in this video on textual metafunction, the concept of theme in language is explored, which refers to the first element in a clause and its organization. The speaker emphasizes the importance of following rules for theme placement, which is highly structured and not arbitrary. The theme can provide adverbial information or function as the subject or object. The message of a clause is not the same as the theme, and the connection between the theme and earlier information is crucial for maintaining the flow from one clause to the next. The video also discusses lexical cohesion, markedness, and the concepts of theme and rheme in analyzing text.

Hi, I’m Safitri Zona. Here are few points that I got after watching the video. The theme in a sentence or clause dictates its structure and meaning, serving as the subject, object, or adverbial. It can be identified by looking at the first word or phrase and provides adverbial information or acts as the subject. Maintaining the connection between themes is essential for text flow. Writers use lexical cohesion and markedness in linguistics to differentiate between expected and unexpected elements. Unmarked themes are common and usual, typically the subject, while marked themes emphasize specific information like time or directions, drawing attention beyond the subject. Recognizing marked or unmarked themes is vital for effective communication.

It is controlled by certain rules, such as not always being the subject of the clause, not always knowing what the clause is about, and choosing the theme based on previous information. The theme of a clause doesn't always need to be a direct repetition of the previously given information as long as it is lexically cohesive.
The concept of markedness refers to something distinctive and easily noticeable. There are two forms: unmarked (unusual, common, and neutral meaning) and marked (unusual, less common, and more specific meaning). In the unmarked theme, the subject and the theme are the same, while in the marked theme, the subject and the theme are different, making it more prominent. The video helps readers understand the importance of theme and rheme in textual meta function

Hi, I'm Ghaitsa. This video was well explained and such a great work. Allow me to summarize your video according to my personal opinion.
The initial word or phrase in a clause is referred to as the theme in textual metafunction. This element serves as the message's starting point and places the clause inside its context. Furthermore, topic is not always 'what the clause is about,' and the choice of theme is influenced by the information provided in preceding clauses, which helps to keep the text cohesive.
Lexical coherence is utilised to construct logical organisation in a text, while markedness distinguishes between expected and unexpected elements in a particular context in linguistics. To evaluate if a theme is marked or unmarked, we must first determine what comes first and whether it is the subject.
Still, the arrangement of clauses can alter the text's impact and emphasis. Understanding the theme's conventions and textual metafunction can help you enhance your writing and communication skills.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, and thank you ^^

Hello, I'm Agung Prasetyo Wibowo. What I understand from watching this video is that the theme is not always the subject of the clause, it is not always about the content of the clause, and the choice of theme is based on the information provided previously. in the clause that appears previously. This allows readers to see how a clause is arranged with previous parts of the text, and whether or not the clauses are connected naturally. The theme of a clause does not always have to be a direct repetition of previously provided information as long as it is lexically cohesive.
Meanwhile, there is something called the concept of signification. It means something that is distinctive and easily visible. The video also introduces the idea of markedness, where unmarked elements are common and neutral, while marked elements are unusual and specific. In clause structure, the unmarked practice places the subject first, while the marked practice puts something other than the subject first, creating emphasis.

I'm Bagas Prasetyo Wibowo and in my opinion, the video explains theme and rheme in texts, which are essential for understanding textual organization. The theme is the sentence's starting point, following certain rules and not always repeating previous information verbatim.
The textual meta function is about how texts are organized, and it's crucial to grasp the theme, the first element of a clause. The theme isn't the entire text's message but the initial word or phrase conveying meaning. Text organization relies on rules governing how elements are arranged, with the theme being a vital element following these rules. It can take different forms, like prepositional phrases or noun phrases, as long as it maintains the text's meaning. These rules for arranging the theme are structured patterns that ensure coherent and clear writing. Understanding the textual meta function is essential for analyzing and interpreting texts, with the theme adhering to specific rules for coherence and clarity.

Hi, I'm Yollanda. In my opinion, the theme and rheme in textual meta function are explained in this video. I really appreciate this explanation as it makes everything clear to me. Similar to this, the theme-the portion that is known-comes first in a sentence, and the rheme-the remainder-is new. Semantic value is similar to a word's hidden meaning, and repetition is the act of repeating something to emphasize its significance. Pronunciation is simply the way we speak words aloud. The subject and theme sections also make sense; it seems that the opening of a sentence frequently indicates the topic of the sentence, and occasionally they do the same thing. Concerning markedness also, It signifies something clear-cut and conspicuous. This concept comes in two flavors: marked, which has a unique, uncommon, and more focused meaning, and unmarked, which is something common, ordinary, and neutral. Applying this idea to a clause, the marked or unusual practice is to put anything other than the subject as the first element of the clause, whereas the unmarked or usual practice is to put the subject first.

Hi. I’m Zahra Alya H. After I watched this video, I summarized the points I got from the video.
In this video, we learn about textual metafunctions regarding theme and rheme. This explains how texts are organized/organization of texts. The theme in textual metafunction is the first element/what comes first of the clause. The theme is the starting point of the message that locates and orients the clause within its text. The theme is the textual metafunction sometimes called 'micro theme' or 'clause theme'. The theme is not always the subject of the clause and is not always 'what the clause is about'. We follow a pattern where we can make choices about what to include in the theme. The theme will have a connection to what came before. Themes contain 'old' or 'previously given' information, something that's already been mentioned. The 'old' information must have the same semantic value as the information in the theme. Old information can be written through repetition, reference, and lexical cohesion.
Unmarked is usual, common, dominant, and neutral meaning. Marked is unusual, less common, weaker, and more specific meaning. Examples marked and unmarked can be seen in pronunciation, lexis, and morphology. An unmarked theme is a condition where the subject and theme are the same. Meanwhile, a marked theme is a condition where the subject and theme are different. Marked themes make certain types of information more prominent. Rheme is everything other than the theme.

  • @fierzaamandarozi4460
    @fierzaamandarozi4460 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi, I'm Amanda. I learned from the video that the textual metafunction helps organize the message within and between clauses. To understand the clause message, the first thing we need is to recognize the theme, which is the first element of the clause. For instance, in the sentence "For centuries, yellow canaries have been used to test the air mining," "for centuries" is the first element of the clause. It gives information about the right time, and its function is to provide meaning. The text organization is based on rules that govern how elements are arranged. We can categorize words into prepositional phrases, noun phrases, verbs, infinitives, and prepositional phrases based on the example sentences mentioned above.
The textual metafunction discusses themes that help understand how a clause is organized about the textual portions that came before it. The article serves as the starting point for each phrase that gives a message, and it locates and orients the clause inside its text.
Furthermore, the video explains that markedness is the condition in which one language aspect is more distinctively identified or marked than another, which is unmarked. Markedness is a common concept in linguistics, where marked refers to unusual, less common, weaker, or more specific meaning, while unmarked refers to usual, ordinary, dominant, or neutral meaning. For example, an actor refers to a person who acts, regardless of gender, while an actress refers specifically to a female. However, many women describe themselves as actors. The terms lion and lioness are also marked examples. If we say some lions are over there, we can't presume their gender.
In contrast, if we say "lioness" over there, we'll assume it's a female. Markedness reveals how gender is discussed. Similarly, in morphology, "talked" is unmarked as it is the most common way to make a past tense with the addition of "ed," while "ran" is marked as it involves a change other than just adding "ed."

Hi, Anisa Febriana Larasati. I found the speaker in that video to be very interesting since he goes into great detail regarding the metafunction. I may conclude from the video that language is structured and functions according to a theory called metafunction. The ability of language to help speakers or writers order their messages is known as textual metafunction. In addition, the speaker focused on markedness theory. Metafunction theory is various parts of linguistics to which markedness theory can be applied. Additionally, markedness theory can assist in explaining how various linguistic decisions reflect various language metafunctions.

    Summary :
I found a video that explains the Textual Metafunction really well, which is important for my studies. After watching the video, I learned that the theme in a clause is the first word or phrase that appears in it. However, the theme is not necessarily the subject of the clause; it can be any word or phrase that connects the clauses in a natural way. Although there are no strict rules for the theme, there are patterns that people follow when speaking and writing. These patterns help the clauses connect and flow naturally. The theme doesn't have to repeat or reference the previous clause, as long as it's lexically cohesive.
There is also a linguistic concept called markedness, which refers to something that's noticeable or catches our attention more than others. Marked objects are distinct, while unmarked objects are neutral and common. Markedness can exist in pronunciation, lexis, morphology, and even theme. An unmarked theme usually puts the subject as the first element, while a marked theme may have a preposition or other word class as the first element instead of the subject. In short, the unmarked theme has the subject and theme as the same, while the marked theme has them as different.

Hi, I'm Teguh Ardiansyah, in my opinion the video is about textual metafunction, covered the significance of the theme in structuring a clause within a sentence and how it links to previous information to preserve the overall coherence of a text.
Language can use marked and unmarked forms to draw attention to specific information. The concept of markedness, which is defined as the first element of a clause that can function as the subject, object, or adverbial in linguistics, is also introduced. Writers and speakers can highlight specific information beyond the subject matter by designating a theme.
In text analysis, knowing which themes are marked or unmarked is essential.

Hello I am Nawaful Raekhan, After watching the video, the concept of themes and rhemes in textual metafunction is explored, offering a captivating perspective on how language is organized. Themes, typically found at the beginning of sentences, serve as familiar entry points, while marked themes, which deviate from the norm, add a creative flair to writing. Rhemes follow themes, introducing new information and progressing the narrative. Authors use references and ellipsis to maintain coherence. Understanding themes and rhemes is key to appreciating text structure, influencing our interpretation of written content.

Hi, my name is Sarifah Salwa, after watching this video I got some understanding about textual metafunction, both theme and rheme. This video gives a clear understanding of how the theme is crucial for structuring sentences and connecting them to earlier information in a text, which helps to keep the whole text together. The theme is what comes first in a sentence or clause which can function as the subject, object or adverbial and the theme that has no relation to literary themes can be called the micro or clause theme, then the rest of the clause in which the theme is developed called as rheme. the video allows us to see how each clause is organized in relation to what came before, controlling the choice of theme that is used. The Theme is not simply the subject of a sentence, but rather it should contain old or previously given information that is connected semantically to the text. The speaker gives examples, like in a children's story, where the theme should connect to something mentioned before but not too far back. If the theme isn't well-developed or doesn't connect properly, it can confuse readers.
The video also talks about "lexical cohesion," which means how words are connected in meaning, helping to organize a text logically. It also introduces "markedness" in linguistics, which shows how language can use marked and unmarked forms to draw attention to specific information. By marking a theme, writers, and speakers can highlight certain information, not just the subject. Understanding how to identify marked or unmarked themes is key in analyzing text.
Thank you for providing a good explanatory video!

Hi, I'm Maria. Based on my point of view, this video consists of the organization of texts can be broken down into their constituent parts, such as prepositional phrases and noun phrases. These parts can be rearranged into different patterns while maintaining the same meaning, demonstrating the importance of the theme in guiding the organization of texts. While the later parts of a sentence may be up to the author's choice, the theme is controlled by structured patterns that are followed unconsciously.

Hello, I'm Oxa Ardyan Fathurozi. My understanding of the video is that, although it isn't always the first word in the clause, the theme is always the first element. Furthermore, themes are not always "what the clause is about," and the information provided in the preceding clauses influences the theme selection, contributing to the text's coherence. The theme should have lexical connections but doesn't always need to restate earlier material. In the video, the idea of marked and unmarked topics is also covered.
The marked meaning is unique and specific, while the unmarked meaning is typical and common. The subject and topic are the same in the context of the clause when the subject is unmarked and appears as the first element. In contrast, marked places additional words before a subject, giving the clause a distinct subject and theme.

Hello, I'm Anwar Willy Andhika. in my opinion. There is no main discussion but rather the guidance of a specific time, place, or situation where the topic happens and clauses, sentences, etc have the element that is organized that gives meaning to the sentence. The theme sometimes is not the subject, but usually comes first in the sentences. The organization is following certain rules which this rules can change the sentence while the sentence itself has the same meaning before the change. In conclusion, the sentence can be arranged into kinds of different sentences with different rules while they have the same meaning. This knowledge is very important for analyzing novels and other literature works which allows us to analyze each meaning and the rules that are used in every sentence of literature works

Hi, I'm Annisa Tusa'diyah, I would like to briefly explain my understanding of textual metafunction. Please correct me if I'm wrong. In textual metafunction, theme is the first point in the clause; it doesn't matter whether it's subject, object, prepositional, or other. The theme also shows that the clauses are organized in relation to the previous part and the old information must have the same semantic value. Second, markedness. In markedness there are marked (unusual, specific, stronger) and unmarked (usual, neutral, weaker). Even though it seems boring and common, unmarked themes are easy for children to understand, so they are often presented in fairy tales. Then, to identify a marked theme, the subject and theme are different, whereas in an unmarked theme both are the same.
That's my understanding about textual metafunction, thank you.

Hi, I’m Dimas, so far, what I can understand from watching this video is that the theme in textual metafunction is the first word or phrase in a clause. It can also be said to be the first element of the clause, serves as the starting point of the message, and locates and orients the clause within its text. It is controlled by certain rules: (1) the theme is not always the subject of the clause, (2) it is not always what the clause is about, and (3) the choice of the theme is based on the information previously given in clauses that appeared before. It allows the reader to see how a clause is organized with the parts of the text that came before it, either making the clause connect naturally or not. The theme of a clause doesn’t always need to be a direct repetition of the previously given information as long as it is lexically cohesive.
Meanwhile, there is something called the concept of markedness. It means something distinctive and easily noticeable. There are two forms of this concept: unmarked, which is something usual, common, and neutral meaning, and marked, which is something unusual, less common, and more specific meaning. When this concept is applied to a clause, the unmarked or usual practice is to place the subject as the first element of the clause, while the marked or unusual practice is to place anything but the subject as the first element of the clause. In other words, in the unmarked theme, the subject and the theme are the same, while in the marked theme, the subject and the theme are different, which also makes it more prominent.

My name is Syifa Ravina Gamelia, I will summarize the above video according to my personal opinion. At the beginning of the video, the speaker discusses the concept of textual meta-function which refers to text structure. The speaker explains the importance of theme as the first element in a clause and details the rules that govern the position of theme in a clause. A theme can function as a subject, object, or adverb in a clause. Although the theme may change, the meaning of the sentence remains the same. The speaker discusses how themes provide information about time or become the subject. Then, the speaker explained the concept of clauses and the patterns people follow in writing and speaking. The speaker also discussed the relationship between the theme and the beginning of the text which is important for maintaining the flow of the text. The speaker emphasized the importance of theme in maintaining the organization and cohesion of the whole text. In addition, the speaker also introduced the concept of signification in linguistics, which refers to things that catch our attention because they are visible or unusual. The speaker explained how the concept of signification applies in language and took the example of gender in language. The speaker also discussed the concept of marked and unmarked forms in language and its application to themes in textual metafunctions. Marking the theme of each clause in writing or speech allows the writer or speaker to highlight certain information and make it more salient to the reader or listener. The unmarked theme mark is usually the subject and is deliberately chosen to make the story easier to follow.

Hello, I'm Hasna Nata, so far as I know, the textual meta function refers to how texts are organized, and it is essential to understand the theme, which is the first element of a clause. The theme is not the overall message of a text but rather the first element that can be a word or a phrase that conveys some meaning or information. The organization of a text depends on certain rules that control how elements are arranged, and the theme is one of the most important elements that must follow these rules. The theme can be identified by analyzing the first element of a clause, and it can be a prepositional phrase, a noun phrase, or any other form of words that convey some meaning. The theme can be rearranged, but the meaning of the text must remain the same. The rules that control how the theme is arranged are not random but rather highly structured patterns that govern how we speak or write. In conclusion, understanding the textual meta function is critical for analyzing and interpreting texts, and the theme is an essential element that must follow certain rules to ensure the coherence and clarity of a text.

There’s also a concept of markedness, when it is applied, the usual practice would be to place the subject as the first element of the clause, while the marked one is to place anything but the subject as the first element. correct me if i''m wrong.

Hello, I'm Mifta. I would like to share my understanding after watching the video. So, this video explains textual metafunction, which refers to how texts are organised. It also explains the concept of theme, which is the first element of a clause that determines what comes first in a sentence. It also discusses the relationship between theme and prior information in a text, as well as the concepts of markedness and unmarkedness. Furthermore, it gives examples of unmarked and marked themes in sentences.
So far, my understanding learnt from the video is that textual metafunction refers to how a text is structured, theme is the first element of a clause that determines what comes first in a sentence, theme must be connected to prior information, and markedness and unmarkedness refer to something common or unusual in a language, such as pronunciation or word usage.

I've looked in halliday's introduction book for the pages/chapter where he talks about this relationship between the themes of sentences, but I couldn't find it. But I guess what I really want to know is how to keep the flow of a text and not break the reader's expectation... Do I really have to only talk about the first theme of the paragraph throughout the whole paragraph to keep this flow? I'm mostly looking at this from a cognitive poetics perspective, but I can't help it because this really seems like an invaluable tool to keep the rhythm of a text in a state of flow. When I use a pronoun to refer back to one of the themes of the last sentence, it does not necessarily seem to refer to it, so I presume there are other variables at play here. Could you point me in the right direction with this? I also tried searching for pronoun and anaphor binding from cognitive/ cognitive poetics perspective, but I couldn't find anything.

Hello my name is Athaaya Fatin Nuha, as far as i got the video, this video discusses the textual meta function, which is how text is organized. The first to discuss when talk about the organization of text is the theme. Themes of the text here refers to what comes first in a clause or sentence. The video provides examples of how the same elements of a sentence can be rearranged to create different patterns while conveying the same meaning. It explains that the theme is not necessarily the main point or topic of the clause but rather what comes first. Then it also emphasizes that there are rules or patterns that govern what is put first in a clause, and although people may not be aware of these rules, they tend to follow them in their speaking and writing. The concept of theme is further explained through examples, and it is highlighted that the theme does not necessarily have to be the subject of the clause but can be any word or phrase that comes first. For the example , there are of two paragraphs with the same information but different organization, demonstrating that people prefer the one where the theme connects to what was mentioned earlier in the text. This connection to previously given information is seen as expected in the theme position. The video concludes by stating that themes are expected to contain old information or previously given information.

Hi, I’m Ramadhani Dinda Lestari, and here are some points I got from the video.
The theme is a crucial element in a sentence or clause, controlling its organization and meaning. It can function as the subject, object, or adverbial and can be identified by looking at a clause's first word or phrase. The theme is not necessarily the main point of the clause but its organization, providing adverbial information about time or being the subject. The connection between the theme and the earlier part of the text is essential for maintaining the flow from one clause to the next. The theme is the starting point of a message and locates and orients the reader or listener. Lexical cohesion is used to create logical organization in a text, and markedness in linguistics differentiates between expected and unexpected elements in a given context. Theme refers to what comes first in a sentence or clause, while everything else is defined as the "ream." To identify a marked or unmarked theme, one must identify what comes first and determine whether it is the subject. Unmarked forms are considered usual and common, while marked forms are unusual or different. In a sentence, the unmarked themes are usually the subject and come first, while marked themes make certain information more prominent. Marked themes make certain information more prominent, such as indicating the story's subject or highlighting specific information like time or directions. Unmarked themes may be deliberately chosen to be boring to make it easier for children to follow the story. Writers and speakers can draw attention to specific information beyond the subject by marking a theme. Identifying marked or unmarked themes is key to effective communication and understanding.

This element serves as the starting point for the message and places the clause in context.
Additionally, the subject is not always the subject of the clause, and the choice of topic is influenced by information provided in previous clauses, which helps keep the text cohesive.
Lexical coherence is used to build logical organization in a text, while sharpness helps distinguish between expected and unexpected elements in a particular context in linguistics.
To judge whether a topic is marked or not, one must first determine what comes first and whether it is a topic or not.
However, the arrangement of clauses can change the impact and emphasis of the text.
Understanding thematic conventions and meta-functions of writing can help you improve your writing and communication skills.
