So just like in my last video I decided to cover a topic that I have been asked about in the comments section of several of my videos. I have talked a lot about some of the bizarre and unique animals that existed during the Triassic period, but out of all that we've discussed the one animal I have had the most questions about is the strange hammer headed reptile called Atopodentatus. And seeing as it has an interesting story behind it's freakish face, I figured it would be fun to talk about in a video!

I find it fascinating that so many species across the past evolved long neck but today there is really only the Giraffe with this kind of feature. I wonder what has changed to make that kind of specialization seemingly more rare.

Also, "Atopodentatus" means "weirdtooth", which is a very "Land Before Time" sort of name for a prehistoric reptile.

This is a wonderful comment, your dad was awesome bringing those magazines home to you. I used to buy as many dinosaur toys for my child as long as they were as factually accurate for that time and they will tell me how fond their memories are of that time in their life. It feels great to be the parent that excites your childs imagination. Hats off to your dad!

I would love to see something about the development of eyes, especially the quality of vision that was available during different periods. When I was young dinosaurs were always portrayed as drab grey beasts. I know we know that there was colour in these animals but when did it start. Was there a point in the predator prey arms race where sight would have been limited enough that creatures did not have the need for colour. Was there also a point where nature may have come up with "razzle dazzle" type camouflage like was seen on WW1 ships.

Tim Tim with his current form is hilarious.
I knew he was up to something with that dorky smile. 😁

The skull makes me ponder just how wrong or close we are to understanding anything at all about this animal. After seeing a hippo skull, I like to imagine every animal we've never actually seen as having a head way bigger than we imagine.

Can you do Brontoscorpio next please? I think you should have talked about it during your video on the Silurian Period. Also, I remember it from the Walking with Monsters documentary made by BBC.

Nothing like getting Timmy to earn his room and board. Glad you have him doing the cooking and the shilling.
