Top 5 Weirdest Triassic Animals!

    There are a lot of very strange animals that have existed in the roughly half a billion years that multicellular life has existed on Earth. However in my opinion there is one time that has stood out. The Triassic period.
    Although this was the earliest time in the Mesozoic, and that has always been thought of as "the age of dinosaurs" the truth is that this was really not the case yet. Dinosaurs existed but they were hardly dominant over the planet like they would become later in the Jurassic.
    In this video, I want to talk about the animals that did rule the first 50 million years of the Mesozoic. The beasts who are so bizarre that I decided to make a top 5 list of the weirdest Triassic animals. Then next week, come back and see why so many of these creatures became so very strange, as well as why we don't see any of the descendants of these guys today.

    To be fair, the Mesozoic is also (and more accurately) called the “Age of Reptiles” and the Triassic still fits that description well.

      @@JosefDerKaiser There were a lot of big reptiles in the Permian, but mostly, it was the synapsids that dominated that time period, and Permian synapsids are far closer to mammals than reptiles.

      The Mesozoic should definitely be considered The Age of Reptiles more than The Age of Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs ruled the land during the Jurassic and Cretaceous, but at the same time the seas had icthyasaurs, plesiosaurs, mosasaurs, and aquatic crocodiles. Meanwhile the skies had pterosaurs

    As I've heard it, the Triassic might be better considered the 'Age of Crocs', with all the suchian and pseudosuchian species filling so many niches.

    • @PaleoAnalysis
      @PaleoAnalysis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I like the blanket term from another commenter. "The Age of Archosaurs"

    • @lievenvanloo6011
      @lievenvanloo6011 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@PaleoAnalysis I would simply consider it the first Age of Reptiles.
      As Archosaurs ruled the land, the Triassic also sees reptiles dominating the air (Pterosaurs) and water (Ichtyosaurs, Sauropterygia).
      Thus for the first time having reptiles dominate all 3 ecosystems.

    I love your videos, at some point wonder if you'd be interested in also covering weird and strange plant life during some of these times as well. We always hear about the strange animals that lived but not so much about the habitats they come from and how that may have added to their weirdness compared to the standards we think about today with animals in different habitats

    I loved this! You cannot do too many of these, as far as I’m concerned, and a series on the weird animals of the Triassic would be a delight. I do somewhat prefer the Triassic and earlier periods, but I love all of paleontology.
    My suggestion for another series: a focus on which animals survived (compared to the big groups that didn’t) the major mass extinctions with speculation on why, based on their biological niches and other traits and on what the nature of the world catastrophe was likely to have been.

    Yes. This a great era that produced life forms that veer from the general picture I have. Many weird non-dinosaur archosaurs, several forms that look roughly like cursoiral or at least terrestrially moble crocodilians, somewht odd looking synapsids, and so on. Great idea to cover this.

    I think I've said this elsewhere, but my take on it , why the creatures of the early Triassic were so weird, was because they had so much room to expand and adapt. Coming out of the Great Dying, I guess it took the planet some time to stabilise and develop a decent habitable climate once more. Until it did, every living thing had to just keep going. Then, with the world becoming more hospitable, Nature simply took the brakes off everything and allowed then to adapt, diversify and spread out.
    If you think about it, what happened in the early Triassic has similarities to what happened in the Cambrian. To be sure, the Cambrian explosion created some very weird creatures, but that may simply be because Nature was exploring what could be done with complex multi cellular life forms.
    Complex life had been around for may hundreds of millions of years by the start of the Triassic; in that time, life had worked out what body plans were effective and what weren't. Even so, with so many ecological niches up for grabs, as it were, many organisms clearly chose to make efforts to inhabit niches alien to their kind. Once more, Nature got to work finding out what adaptations fitted in best with various ecological niches... and who knows what bizarre creatures we might now consider to be totally normal today, if matters had gone differently?
