Actually that's not quite it. As an avid Yahoo user back in their golden time, Yahoo used to out Google Google. But just like AOL and MySpace did, they rested on their laurels and kept thinking in normal industry and retail standards. You have a YEAR buffer, maybe two years if you are lucky, before a hungry company can catch up with you and surpass you. Comcast cable and AT&T DSL overtook AOL, Facebook killed MySpace, and Google aborted Yahoo. That's what happens when you are stagnant and unwilling to change.
The fall's pretty easy: ask any web developer, and they'll tell you IE doesn't care whatsoever about the standards, and breaks everything. It's a nightmare to deal with.
As much as the internet likes to shit on Tumblr for a bunch of reasons, it was a birthplace of many artists and was really important for many people. "Yahoo was never really a strong brand"? How old are you? Yahoo wasn't just a massive brand in the 90s, it was basically the Internet for so many people.
He didn't say "big", he said "strong". I'm old enough to remember. I used Yahoo because that was practically the only way to find something on the internet, but it never was a pleasant experience, and I didn't gave a fuck about the brand. When I tried Google, I forgot about Yahoo in a millisecond. Google wasn't just way faster, but gave me far better search results from day one.
Agreed. I know a few people who developed a bit of a sub-community around it. Dave Consiglio, Habib Fanny (Fah-ney, not fanny as in fanny pack), and Andrew Wiell, for instance. This community, Consiglio Devastations, is on TH-cam, but is focused around the intellectuals on Quora, myself (www.quora.com/profile/Ethan-Campbell-17) included.
Mayer took Flickr and destroyed it. I'm a photographer and Flickr was a great community. Four years ago Yahoo made major changes to Flickr which completely ignored what the community wants. The attitude towards users was arrogant and dismissive. Mayer had the gaul to statw that 'there is no such thing as a professional photographer'. All Yahoo had to do was listen to what everyone wanted and provide it. It really was that simple, but they always thought that they knew better. They got what they deserve and I'm delighted to see the demise of Mayer!
sltho i believe ultimately bad for the shareholders, too. i cancelled my Flickr sub and now use it for free. Naturally, shareholders are necessary, but they need to learn that if a business does not provide customers what they want they go elsewhere. it seems so basic.
After some time that I think yahoo did, nsfw tags no longer functioned on tumblr So I can no longer search orhtna# for example and for some reason, many left and abandoned tumblr for it and I can confirm tumblr is more desolate now

Pacthgil Nehpets Usually when a youtuber gets bigger, they start to get lazy or nervous about the high numbers. Meaning their channel starts lowering quality..
I don't think that's true. Angry video game nerd, Boogie2988, Pewdiepie, < 3, Philip defranco show, JRE, Epic Meal Time, and etc are of higher quality compared to when they started out. It's extremely rare to be sitting on a gold mine and leave it. Just look at any big youtuber's old videos compared to their new ones.
Myspace and Yahoo both falls when they start selling their customer info's. Good falls. Best product they make, Geocities (free web page), Yahoo Answers, Yahoo Finance. Others pretty much trash.
I definitely want to see this, to be honest I don't understand WHY it fell. I miss being able to add music and make your profile nice and pretty. Facebook is soo plain, and basically it is all about what people are feeling, their rants and blah blah. I stopped using it and now rarely log on. The only good thing about Facebook is the game section.

The first free messenger was yahoo messenger. Yahoo, you're a legend to the communications tech. Thanks so much Yahoo and your brilliant team! Your name is inked in our minds and hearts.
I can tell you what happened to Yahoo without even watching this. I and many others used to love Yahoo, especially the chat rooms. And then they stopped caring. The place was overrun by bots. IT WAS INSANE. You just couldn't get rid of them. One day in the late 2000's there was a bot in the chatroom complaining about the bots. "ugh, so many bots in here! 19/f" - It was at that point I realized Yahoo just stopped caring. I realized they didn't care to streamline their email service - as Google was fast and not so damn cluttered. Yahoo wanted to be a mess for some reason, and I will never understand why. Myspace did this too. To this day both websites are a cluttered disaster. With Yahoo being a cesspool of clutter and a gigantic ad taking up the entire page on entry (as of today, 2/5) and Myspace being a complete clusterfuck of BS music, music, and more music. Myspace decided there was nothing in the social media world and no money to be made apparently. Both of these sites decided to be messy for some reason and not care about what the users actually wanted. I will never understand. Yahoo made itself into a complete travesty especially. They had YAHOO CHAT - Where people could video call. Imagine if they utilized the millions of users instead of allowing skype to take over? But no, they decided to keep the quality of webcam access minimal. Even on a fast connection in 2007, they did not always allow the "super webcam" option and although I and my friend had very fast internet and new webcams, the image quality looked like it was taken on a 56k modem still, then beamed to antarctica during an earthquake while a mad scientist quickly and hastily breaks down the code and writes it on floppy disks, then uploads to a commodore 64 and sends the images to a hut in nigeria during a meteor strike, where it is converted to smoke signal back to the united states and an indian that speaks spanish converts it to binary again and uploads to the internet on 14.4k, where its downloaded outside in a blizzard in milwaukee, filmed on VHS, sent by mule to the yahoo HQ server, where a bot that has taken over part of the company uses photoshop 6 from 2002 to blur the image, then sends it to a 1st grade classroom where children draw the images by hand and then scan it into an old macintosh that can barely play oregon trail, using a scanner from 1994, then each frame printed on dot matrix and sold to a nigerian scammer as where he promises a large sum of money for it - and then he sells the images to a museum claming they are rare paintings, which are confiscated by INTERPOL and sent back to the US by a pidgeon during a hurricane, to the CIA headquarters where it is again split into multiple files, blurred, reimaged and reprinted by dot matrix, filmed onto BETAMAX, then sent to the end user after being printed on dot matrix again and then they must upload it to their computer, but only after they click on the ads the bots were able to sneak into the code, and only if they could stop getting booted by other users that downloaded free software anywhere online to mess with them because yahoo had no security either. Yahoo was FUCKED.
maach king wouldnt it be on youtube? itself?......hmm....it kind of makes me think where is youtube's vid on the youtube......shdnt they keep one for referwnce for evwry1
I think it's somewhat unfair to call Marissa Mayer a bad CEO as she inherited a company which was already in shambles when she arrived. It's rather the lack of strategic focus of the board and the history of the company that signified the dawnfall of Yahoo.
She didn't want to run a tech company. She cut her teeth working on development and had a degree in CS but it's pretty clear she wasn't a techie at heart and didn't have great business sense about the direction of tech. She did a masters in CS, but it was in a wonky mathematically area of CS that suited what she was doing a Google but probably not so well suited to managing a company. The stories that came out about her egotistical way of working with subordinates are pretty "bad" in my opinion.
+Optidorf No, she still is a bad CEO. (Though she managed to screw Yahoo out of millions for no other reason other than failing, so was successful in accomplishing that.)
My favorite part of yahoo used to be their chat rooms. Back in 2000 to 2008..its was a great alternative to AOL chatrooms mainly because you couldn't get reported and banned for hurting someone's Internet feelings. Only downside was the script kiddies booting the whole room. Chat rooms were pretty fun. Way better than the type of social networking we get these days from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
I've had a Yahoo email address since 1998 and used the chat rooms for years until the bots completely took over. Some time in the early 2000s Yahoo flat out said they didn't care to maintain the service anymore no matter how popular they still were and shut it down in 2007. I still have the email address, but only use it for things that I'm sure will generate spam.
Gmail is complete garbage. I have to use it in some enterprise settings (education) and it is just so sure that it knows what to do with things better than you do, that it becomes unusable. Their object model completely undermines the ability to pass and process information efficiently and effectively.
I've been a Yahoo user since 1997. I went to them for web email. This was before gMail. The downfall of Yahoo was Yahoo Maps. Yahoo Maps was originally comparable to Google Maps. Then Yahoo came out with a fancy new release of Maps. But this required fast internet at a time when many users were still using dial up. The new Maps failed. Yahoo went back to its earlier version of Maps but it was too late. Most users simply went over to Google Maps. It case you didn't realize it, maps is actually the center jewel of a web portal. With maps comes search and locate. The big revenue comes from selling advertising associated with maps. For example, seeing all the McDonald's icons pop up for a given location. Or all the pizza restaurants in an area. Maps is like the Yellow Pages of the phone book days. Yellow Pages were pure advertising revenue for the phone companies. After Yahoo cancelled its maps program, it later cancelled its travel program. There were other cancellations too. These programs fell like dominos. I believe most of this traffic went over to Google as well.
CF, that ending was simply the best! You would think that Yahoo! would have developed a group to correct spelling and grammar for topic issues, instead of letting all those posters continue such grammatical mistakes. Just like a resume, any spelling mistake or poor grammar on your website or posting proves that no one will take you seriously. By the way, I would like to order a tasty Pregante dinner! With parsley, bread sticks, and just a touch of oregano. Also a bottle of Napa Valley red merlot, please!
Ah man this brings back memories!! I remember being in Yahoo chat rooms all day and chatting with strangers on Yahoo messenger. If I got bored with that, I would head to Yahoo games to play pool. Fun times! 😊
Same!! Spent so many hours on yahoo pool and also on the blackjack table in yahoo games ..and I loved yahoo messenger ..made so many online friends that way in the late 90s early 00s
Marissa Mayer is in my opinion the sole reason Yahoo failed. She was in fact so bad that she undermined any and all services Yahoo provides, on top of costing the company billions with her random progressive decisions. She got laid off by Google for a reason.
For me yahoo seemed always a bit off, for me it was like one of this pages where you could get a random virus that would install those weird toolbars on your browser that you would not be able to get rid of lol
Because they operate differently and ran by Softbank. Verizon have no control over them other than the name. This is the reason why yahoo is successful in Japan and shit elsewhere.

I remember Yahoo ads on TV. They were so annoying. I never understood what they were advertising; I only knew I wanted nothing to do with it. I started with web browsers as soon as I first got on the internet. I didn't want anyone to hold my hand.
I disagree with most of the video. The reason Yahoo failed was that they ignored their users over and over again. They kept trying to fix what wasn't broken, making it broken. It was a great place to meet people and have fun. They were ahead of their time with the technology they had. Before skype you had voip calling with messenger. You could video chat with messenger, etc. You could browse and meet friends that shared the same interest and add them to your friends list and chat with them on messenger. People still used there service even along side of myspace and facebook because you couldn't video chat with people on there and simply they had the best messenger. A lot of people used chat back in the day but eventually bots joined the rooms and took it over. It took yahoo forever to try and fix it. What they did to fix it was make users enter captcha code before entering chat. This worked shortly after for just a bit. The problem was that all was needed was a human log a bot in with the captcha and then they could walk away leaving their bot to bother users. Instead all that was needed was code which allowed a percentage of a room to boot a user suspected of being a bot. Say once five people click a username as a bot it autoboots them out of room. Problem solved with bots right there. But Yahoo gave up, bots plagued the rooms and advertisers left. Eventually they closed the rooms. They came out with 360 profiles which to me seemed okay to go along side with your basic profile if you wanted to use it. They had this while they had chat too I think so this isn't a perfect timeline by me. They got rid of it when it was actually catching on. The next thing they screwed up was the profiles. You had a simple profile which you would put in your interests and could meet people of the same if you wanted to by setting it up on your profile. They had a member directory search. Anybody that didn't want to be searched could set their profile to private. Well, yahoo completely did away with their member search. So now at this point you are left with a basic profile and no chat and no way to search for new friends. Well, then they go and screw with your profile several times over trying to make it look like a facebook or myspace profile trying to be like them, with the only exception you have no way to meet anybody you have to add people you already know by giving them your yahoo id. Useless. There was no point whatsover in having yahoo at all by now. So millions just left. There is so much other stuff I'm leaving out that was stupid such as closing yahoo groups, geocities, etc. but I've explained the main point. All this that was done by Yahoo was done while their users were screaming at them to stop. So I hope other companies learn from this. Don't take away stuff that is working trying to do something you think is better that you think your users want even though they tell you "no we don't want this". They wanted chat fixed and not gone. Wanted their profiles left alone and wanted it to stay functional, no purpose in a profile if nobody can see it. Yahoo ignored the people who matter most, its users.
+Charles Wright They screwed up Yahoo mail several times as well, and of course, there was the infamous security breach. It's a shame Yahoo became so incompetent. They used to be truly unique...now they are just a shell of their former selves.
0:21 "it seems like a lot of people haven't actually been getting notifications" Please, don't say it like that suddenly turned out to be an unpleasant surprise for everyone. People don't need notifications for most of the channels, that's why they are an optional feature turned off by default. I am subscribed and, obviously, like this channel, and yes, I understand how TH-cam rating system changed recently and made it more difficult for your work to pay off, but please keep it honest. Selling the notifications like a no-brainer is quite dishonorable. Just for an example, I, myself, am quite a seasoned TH-cam content consumer and have probably already subscribed to several hundred channels over the course of the whole TH-cam history - the notifications used to work a bit different in the early years and they had a full reset on it for the sake of users, but if I turned notifications for every channel I'm subscribed to now - I would be overwhelmed by notifications and they would lose their whole purpose. TH-cam has solved the discovery problem in a different way now and if I'm subscribed to some channel, not avoiding Google tracking like a paranoid freak and am at the moment interested in one of the topics a channel I'm subscribed to is focusing on - their video will appear either in the "related" column to the right(even if it is not in fact related to the video I'm watching) or be placed on my personal front page which I visit every time I'm unsure what to watch next. The bottom line you could use honestly is: "Turn notifications on if you want to be notified of new uploads by this channel."
+Murad “Gness Erquint” Beybalaev .. Just chill dude. I've just gotten A LOT of frustrated messages and comments saying they don't see my uploads. I'm actually trying to help some people. Strange how in 2017, the way you phrase a neutral sentence has to be perfect or it's considered "dishonest" haha

Murad Beybalaev I agree a sub is enough. I don't need 100 more notifications on my phone every hour. when I want to watch youtube I will just open the app rather than being bothered while I am trying to get actual work done
I still fondly remember how in 2003 being 18 y/o, I went to Europe to study abroad. Yahoo Messenger was the only way to make an online call to Latin America with a decent audio quality. Its a shame it went down so fast
Good riddance Yahoo! You wiped out 7 years worth of my e-mail for no reason, and your hostile takeover of buying up geocities didn’t help your image either.
And 4 days ago they alienated their most loyal customer base. Killing the comment section will or has stopped the eyeballs looking at them hence less advertising exposure/revenue!
I dont know why but there is sad trend of giant companies-ish hiring CEOs to turn things around but then still end up flopping. Does anyone know names of CEOs or notable leaders that turned companies around to the right direction right before the company entered a sort of crisis or was experiencing a crisis. My example would be Steve Jobs, how about others?
10+ years ago, I was already wondering how Yahoo was surviving since Google was around. The question bothers me all the more nowadays. It's like Yahoo WANTS to make terrible decisions all the time. What a trainwreck.
I do have a question Why Yahoo Japan is still strong as hell? Japan has some really weird things. A lot of stores that vanished in the US are still the biggest here: Tower records, Lawson, Yahoo. It is really interesting
Hey can we get a statement on the development of your app "Voxis Launcher". it's more than a year since the last update and I was one of many who bought the full version since its a unique launcher and in hopes of a continuous support from your end.
How do I know that Yahoo still exists? Because of the daily email spam from Yahoo mail. It's as if nobody is running the place. Despite complaints, every day spammers create new, fake accounts, send out a million spam emails, and repeat the process the next day.
All the Yahoo.com hacks did not help. I ever realky used it. It was a spare from decades ago. So when I read up on the hacks. I went to check on it. There were facebook accounts I never created. I am afraidto kill the account because I have no idea what the criminals wanted to do with it. So I have to sit on it until the shut down.
Thanks for the memories. I remember Yahoo in '96. The categories were very helpful. But I remember thinking "what will happen when this internet thing gets any bigger? It'll become too hard to neatly categorize each website." I also remember when Yahoo's homepage became gossipy trash.

I used to read Yahoo news & articles on a daily bases but they started to be very obviously biased towards their Liberal views so much so that I just one day decided to quit Yahoo and never go back. Glad their in ruins now.
Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die". BUT, mercy said "I dont want to give them what they deserve. I don't want them to be cut off from Me. I love them despite all they have done/will do against Me. I want to give My children another chance. I want them to come home and live in My love again". And love said "Jesus, God's Son, came down as a Man, our representative, suffering every temptation, pain and struggle we have ever faced, yet without sin. He took all our sins (past/present/ even future) to the cross and then crucified EVERY ONE on our behalf. Justice was paid on the cross so that we can be free from Hell's punishment, experience Gods mercy of forgiveness of sin and live in His love. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (turn away from our sin and pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through Him (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to obey His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and ask Him to help us in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, or struggling or doubtful, simply be honest and tell Him that. He is not intimidated by ANY sin or struggle you are facing. ANY. He hears and will answer. If we pray for Him to come in, regardless of the condition, then He will. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. If you have any questions let me know
Yeah, Yahoo! Answers was ridiculous: one person would write an answer, whether right or wrong, and the question would be closed forever, no further discussion or followup allowed. What a well-thought-out model.

How old are you? Yahoo wasn't just a massive brand in the 90s, it was basically the Internet for so many people.
not everyone lives in a shitty third world country
He didn't say "big", he said "strong". I'm old enough to remember. I used Yahoo because that was practically the only way to find something on the internet, but it never was a pleasant experience, and I didn't gave a fuck about the brand. When I tried Google, I forgot about Yahoo in a millisecond. Google wasn't just way faster, but gave me far better search results from day one.
Yahoo was the internet before Google came
Nope. Netscape Navigator was. I still remember paying 2.99 an hour to go on Prodigy.com

Oh gosh, the dial up noises... such an innocent time 😂

Eh, I missed that tune .. 56Kbps noise sound in the middle of the night, surfing and searching through the new magic called WWW
I never knew the dial up noises were real. Thought they were just a sound effect in movies
Even yahoo answers is now replaced by Quora.
And Reddit
plebbit is even more cancerous than yahoo answers
People ask some dumb questions on Quora
There's no such thing as a dumb question.
BTW, which way is up?
Mayer took Flickr and destroyed it. I'm a photographer and Flickr was a great community. Four years ago Yahoo made major changes to Flickr which completely ignored what the community wants. The attitude towards users was arrogant and dismissive.
Mayer had the gaul to statw that 'there is no such thing as a professional photographer'.
All Yahoo had to do was listen to what everyone wanted and provide it. It really was that simple, but they always thought that they knew better.
They got what they deserve and I'm delighted to see the demise of Mayer!
Jenny FTOL same thing w tumblr. shame, really. mayer is gordon gecko - great for the shareholders but terrible for the consumers
sltho i believe ultimately bad for the shareholders, too. i cancelled my Flickr sub and now use it for free.
Naturally, shareholders are necessary, but they need to learn that if a business does not provide customers what they want they go elsewhere. it seems so basic.
same with tumblr
Too true. Flickr was superb.
Yahoo killed Flickr and Tumblr, too.

6:28 Verizon buys yahoo for 4.8billion dollars
After that you say "that's about 1% of what microsoft would have paid" but that is around 10%, not 1%, am I missing something?
Alibaba was spun off before the sale.
This allowed Yahoo to maintain their core value and sell off their operating business.
Microsoft wanted to buy it all.

Guys like it when a woman is to blame.
True, but she didn't do anything to run it around and she could've.

It took so many companies to bring yahoo down. Wow, the company is definitely an all in one service platform.
I left Yahoo email finally after another security breach in late 2016, and couldn't be better. Gmail is much more clean anyways
Gmail is complete garbage. I have to use it in some enterprise settings (education) and it is just so sure that it knows what to do with things better than you do, that it becomes unusable. Their object model completely undermines the ability to pass and process information efficiently and effectively.
Outlook is best
Inbox is better family Garbage thing of sync
Yahoo Answers is where I learned about masturbation as a kid. Can't thank them enough.
For some of us its natural. No teaching necessary.
Now its a political shitstorm
CF, that ending was simply the best! You would think that Yahoo! would have developed a group to correct spelling and grammar for topic issues, instead of letting all those posters continue such grammatical mistakes. Just like a resume, any spelling mistake or poor grammar on your website or posting proves that no one will take you seriously. By the way, I would like to order a tasty Pregante dinner! With parsley, bread sticks, and just a touch of oregano. Also a bottle of Napa Valley red merlot, please!

@@TheRyan4778 Besides the infamous security breach, how did they screw up Yahoo! Mail?

I "googled" this: "What happened to Yahoo"
0:21 "it seems like a lot of people haven't actually been getting notifications"
Please, don't say it like that suddenly turned out to be an unpleasant surprise for everyone.
The bottom line you could use honestly is:
"Turn notifications on if you want to be notified of new uploads by this channel."
+ColdFusion I appreciated that. some icons on sites are so subtle that you forget to investigate what they do! You still rocking your Note1? :)
Murad Beybalaev I agree a sub is enough. I don't need 100 more notifications on my phone every hour. when I want to watch youtube I will just open the app rather than being bothered while I am trying to get actual work done

3 years after this video was made, Yahoo kills out users by disabling comments off articles XD
“How bout another Yahoo?”
“Yeah, that’d go down real smooth”
1 MILLION BOIS! WE ARE CLOSE!
How could you forget that the details of over 1 billion accounts were stolen?
"Can U get PREGANTE?!" HAHAHAHAHA!! That's frickin' hysterical!🤣😂🤣
Yahoo: Fails
Google: Yahoo!!
EVER.
If you have any questions let me know
@@edenalexandriab9120 I'm not a Christian but I believe all religions are equal 😀
Yahoo equals a dot com dumpster fire. Those clowns didn't know when to get off the Titanic.
That front page and search bar at the top messed them up...
Yahoo is the new National Enquirer now.
That Yahoo Answers ending had me laughing so hard
Yeah, Yahoo! Answers was ridiculous: one person would write an answer, whether right or wrong, and the question would be closed forever, no further discussion or followup allowed. What a well-thought-out model.
5 billion is 10% of 50 billion fyi
nevermind, literally the first comment fixes this lol
He says in the description.
TheEthan8or and I address it above
That was what I was thinking too.
