- Microsoft's Satya Nadella recently showcased his companys's foray into the Metaverse at its Ignite conference. This comes on the heels of Facebook's recent Connect conference when Mark Zuckerberg announced he is changing its name to Meta, short for Metaverse.

I can see Microsoft focusing more on perfecting the Facebook's Horizon Workspace-like services and cater it to businesses and enterprises while Facebook focuses more on the social/entertainment side of things within the Metaverse.

For me the Metaverse isnt as exciting as they make it seem to me. For me if you want to be in that type of world, you will still feel bound by your real world. For example the avatar flipping in space... she is literally sitting somewhere at home while that is happening. I dont know... Im not sold. If you cant 'feel' , 'smell' or 'taste' something in the metaverse... then its still very 2d and you are looking through a VR headset etc. Also.... why the massive push to get everyone into a 'game' themed world? Metaverse just reminds me of another social game really. I dont know... Too many thoughts in my head about this lol
the same argument was used for video games, social media, and online shopping years ago. Look at the present we live in. It's not about being equal to the real world, it's about having enough resemblance to pretend that it's real, while being infinitely more convenient and addictive

I mean... technically, you can taste and smell, and with haptics you definitely can feel it, but I understand what you mean. But the whole point is not to equal real life, because if that were the case, there wouldn't be massive robots and dystopian settings, the point is to be close enough to be "in" the space but with heightened stylized factors. You don't need to physically float to have fun in a 0 gravity space. You don't need to be physically punched to understand that you need to avoid it. It's a flatscreen experience where you are in full control, not a downgraded real life copy

Everything in the world will be a digital asset and the limitations and physical constraints on production, supply chain logistics, labor laws etc., will not exist there. Imagine the money that will be made. The data being collected alone will be invaluable. It will be used to train Ai that will learn exactly how to manipulate the majority of people in the metaverse.

Microsoft looks to be several years ahead with working concepts. Facebook has a movie trailer.
Microsoft seems to be more focused on what can happen now, which I like. In contrast, Meta seems to focus on what *will* come in the future. For that reason, I prefer Microsoft's approach.

Yeah, but I am thinking about the graphical power that would be required to achieve such detailed world.
Even if they use cloud streaming, lag would still be present as not everyone has fast internet.
The Facebook demo is dishonest as it doesn't show constant ads and product placements intruding into your immersive personalized experience.

Remember Facebook Event was just a trailer that mostly CGI concept trailer of the unreleased Mixed Reality Hardware. But Microsoft is purely what the actual footage.

Honestly, I wasn’t a believer in metaverse technology until I saw Microsoft’s take. At first it just seemed like Roblox on steroids. I think Microsoft is better suited to pull this off since they can easily tap into their hardware and software synergies. I use Teams literally everyday all day so it would be cool to have a more “real” experience where you can walk around and network somewhat naturally.

Meta also has Oculus under its umbrella and the Quest 2 is the most successful VR device to date. So, I think both companies have some leverage in software and hardware they can use to build their vision. I don't know who will succeed though.
I'd say Facebook's presentation feels more like a Ready Player One futuristic vision, while Microsoft feels a little more corporate and microsofty. I still hate Facebook though so whatever. Microsoft is just really bad at marketing to mainstream audiences.
I don’t think they’re trying to. Microsoft targets corporate sector first, because that’s what they’re already integrated into. It sounds businessy because they’re trying to offer business solutions, and “mainstream” users are just a bonus.
I’d disagree on the last part. Microsoft literally owns Xbox and other consumer products, it’s just that this isn’t intended for consumers

This is scary… First it was Facebook that asked to identify people ´s faces in the pictures you posted, therefore, providing this info to governments freely. Now, to finish it, they want us to teach their AI to identify not only faces, but how you think, what makes you choose this over that or how you plan for the future by making the choices you make. I would love for this to be more accessible for folks who can’t move such as quadriplegics, ASL patients, etc. My dad was “quad” and lived 4 hours away from me but we would have loved to hang out in the metaverse together. That would have been such an amazing tool for him.
yet this is also useless for any blindness disorder, migraine, or epilepsy. I can see it having uses, but I can also see some big accessibility lawsuits if this becomes a workplace must. It's entirely vision based.
Facebook's take on it is essentially to get you to enjoy "living" in a virtual world rather than actually going out and living in the real one. I feel sorry for anyone who can't see how this is an extreme form of escapism and all for Facebook's economic gain no less.

There are infinite timelines, we shift daily to different timelines with different outcomes, etc when our consciousness creates a new thought. Our universe is not as black and white as "there is only one reality".

I feel there is value in the Metaverse I guess in the corporate space. If it matures where it's simple, and offers something more than what conferencing can do. I really don't feel like jumping into the metaverse in a personal context. I'm not sure if we need more technology pervading our personal lives, it just doesn't seem naturally healthy.
You right. But you should think about how much people, especially not very wealthy, likes to play games and donate. Its not because they’r living in a shitholes. In games they are can experience something they cannot feel in real life, so they are ready to pay thousands in virtual world for pixels. For example Russian GTA RP makes about 100k bucks per month. So, i think you can make profit of owning the area, or some sort of product in metaverse.
Facebook's Metaverse seems way cooler, but I have a feeling that businesses will always choose Microsoft. A cool idea would be, big companies to cooperate and create one metaverse.
Creating one metaverse is exactly what's happening. Facebook and Microsoft are just a part of it like they're a part of the current internet.

I really don't understand how this is supposed to be seen a a revolutionary thing. Going in a 3d space with a custom avatar to meet others sound like Second Life... which came out in 2003 hardly a new concept if you ask me.
The revolutionary thing, if they success, is interoperability. It's doing what the web did for 2d content and bring it to immersive media but they want to do it with interoperability built deeper. The first goal from Meta seems to have Avatars that can travel everywhere and be made by anyone and be really owned by the user and not under some company's account.
2nd life was too early. Even Meta is far from ready.

You should be able to take an Avatar made by any of those companies and take it to content created by any of those companies and they should all link together.

There are no ads in the Quest 2 and hololens 2, mostly because you are already paying a pretty high price to get them

Some people have a love/hate relationship with Zuckerberg and I almost wonder, what if he was not the face of the company? He’s a smart guy but every now and then, I just wonder. Microsoft and Facebook both have impressive plans but I think NFT and games are THE entry points into the metaverse. NfT projects like Starlight NFT are proving this. What do you guys think?

If they keep inventing new variants to scare us all into staying inside, I can see how everyone would rather be in the metaworse. I can only imagine how the advertisers and developers are salivating over how they can make "digital money" off the people in the new virtual world. That's all they care about anyway.
While Facebook goes the extra mile in order to hype on their invention, Microsoft pragmatically says "no big deal"
