What I admire the most about her is her doing her own thing in her mid-30s. It says a lot about the culture that 30s is 'too old' for a lot of people. Why should more life experience be a hindrance in any way?

As someone in his late 30's, it makes me so happy that new music that completely sweeps me off my feet doesnt necessarily need to be created from someone in their twenties.

It’s sad when someone’s age is the main thing people are saying about anyone…when a scientist makes a breakthrough nobody talks about their age unless they’re ridiculously young (in their teens) which is atypical. If age or dating is all anyone has to say about you, your contributions to the world probably don’t matter as much as it’s hyped to seem. An illusory bubble. This much is proven when on twitter, something with as little as 1.5k tweets is “trending” & blown out the wazoo as if it’s the center of the world. Or fashion magazines mostly nobody reads are posited as the center of some ‘cool world’ everyone should aspire to & everyone is on the outside looking in. Obsolete societies.

She is spot on about Dido and her "comforting presence".
Something Dido always captured really well was this sort of quiet melancholy or sadness. Her music was somber and oftentimes sad, but it was never overwrought or melodramatic. It was just this quiet stillness that was still warm and comforting. And that really resonated with me as a depressed teenager and still resonates with me as I near my 30s.

@@o0alias0o I get that she doesn't want to boxed in (which mind you is a pretty common view of many artists) by it doesn't mean that she isn't appealing to it. Her take seemed pretty hipster to me, like claiming that you can't be defined by genres and that you never think about it but like lets be real her individual stuff and chairlift were both pop music of some kind, maybe not the same, but still pop (dream pop, indie pop etc). Also like as the interviewer was saying many artists would make the same claim so it wasn't weird for him to ask about it despite her hostile approach.

Genres actually exist and stem from journalism, specifically reviewing performances and then having to write about it, it was extremely hard to expound to a reader what you saw last night at a club or bar without the advent of the internet so that they get an idea of what the music is like while reading words. Once you say a band plays rock or punk it gives the reader a starting point.

It blows my mind that Welcome to my island doesn't have a narrative 'cause I interpreted as a young woman who is judged for getting pregnant and then abandoned and rejected by her own family for doing so. Although, in my own life experience I interpreted as an act of control from my dad with the "he [my father] says watch your ego, watch your head girl" it just brings me flashbacks of him tell me "be careful with the people you hang with 'cause maybe they just want you for the way you dress" thing that I considered extremely insulting.

Since this video is also the first interview I'm watching of his, I also almost chalked up his presumptions to come from the ego (or serve to feed it), but even just watching this channel's trailer you might agree that it's only natural to build and become confident in your own worldviews as an artist when you've spoken (deeply, at lengths similar to this interview) to so many creators across numerous disciplines and statuses (from up-and-coming to legendary). I don't think you can run a gig like this that long without successfully assimilating and interpolating the perspectives that come from these discussions. This podcast is as much an art and you can't deny he's a veteran; if you think of it that way, his additions become less redundant and more complementary

  • @jscan

As much as I adore her, the discussion of genre reveals an artistic naivety - it's obviously a necessary evil, as is comparison to other musicians in order to provide tags for folks who, for whatever reason, haven't heard her - how do you describe music without references..

The interviewer is great, the discussion is great, Caroline Polachek is great (huge). This synergy makes me enjoy music interviews again. thanks.

Caroline is truly an artist. Her energy and creativity feel so captivating and authentic- her music seems to come from a spiritual realm deep within the soul. I couldn’t stop my eyes from welling up and my heart from bursting out of my chest when I saw her live for the first time.

Where and when did you see her live? I can imagine it was epic. She reminds me of Tori Amos and Aimee Mann, but totally unique, authentic and in “command” of her own creative genius.

She reminds me A lot of Imogen Heap. Both true artists who seem completely immersed in every aspect of their craft. What a collab that would be… if it hasn’t already happened 🤔

Loved the discussion of genre and it really shows in her work and the work she did with Chairlift. SO many different influences that blow people's minds because she refuses to stay within the lines

I have only heard of this podcast because it is constantly being advertised by Apple. But this guy is so annoying, and epitomizes the whole “I have a podcast, therefore I am an intellectual” stereotype. That’s not something to embrace, it’s uncomfortable. She is honestly saving this interview, and my fav artist rn but I can’t keep listening. Or watching this weirdly intense Thinker stare and pose. Does not sound like I’m listening to two people having a nice conversation. Sounds like I’m overhearing an awkward date where the guy is trying to sound impressive for no reason.

I love her so much, what she said and admited about being dropped out by her previous label and that being the best thing happening to her in her entire life was moving to hear.

I’m so excited i will see her May 19th. I have VIP tickets. I don’t like to spend too much on concerts but I’ve been a fan for so long. It would be awesome if she played Romeo and Ch-Ching as throwbacks to Chairlift.
