  • Fault Lines travels to Honduras to investigate the death of environmental activist Berta Caceres.
    In early March 2016, Honduras's most prominent and outspoken environmental activist, Berta Caceres, was killed in her home. While shocking, her murder did not come as a surprise to her colleagues or family.
    For years, Caceres had received thousands of threats because of her work, fighting for the rights of indigenous communities and for her attempts to stop a hydro-electric dam from being built on indigenous land.
    Her death is the latest in a string of assassinations that have made Honduras one of the world's most dangerous places for environmental activists.
    "Knowing what my mum was fighting for, I always understood that there are dangers because there are bad people, business and powerful economic interests," Laura Zuniga, Caceres's daughter says.
    In 2013, Caceres told a reporter from Al Jazeera that she believed the army had a hit list of activists with her name at the top. She did not take any of this lightly and repeatedly asked the Ministry of Security for protection. But the government didn't seem to take her request seriously.
    Just before midnight, on March 2, 2016, Caceres was shot dead inside her home.
    So why was she killed? And what makes Honduras one of the most dangerous countries in the world for activists?
    Fault Lines travels to Honduras to investigate the reasons behind Caceres' murder and to examine what is fuelling the war against land rights defenders.

    This young girl I work with said she and her brother snuck here from there. She is the most pretty girl I have ever seen. So sad this is where she is from. She told me her life is like a movie, how she got here. I feel so bad for her. I looked up her country after talking to her. This breaks my hart and she is so nice. She works hard everyday. She is only 19 but acts so grown up. I wish there was a way I could help her.

    In Honduras, Mexico and Guatemala. There is no line between corrupt government and business. They are one and the same. Someone ordered this killing. A non existent judicial system makes this all but impossible to bring to justice.

    Dams, mostly imposed on people without thought or consultation, have caused far more harm than any benefits. The benefits have also mostly been for corporations, for " investors ". Imposing these schemes is of course easiest in countries where laws are weak, or, where the same interests that impose the dams, are also the beneficiaries of them. Honduras really does have problems. Neither the US of North America nor the EU, seems to be of any help at all. All the presumably ardent defender of democracy, have once again only paid lip service to " democracy " and have proven to be deadly ineffectual.

      The USA only sticks it’s nose in to “help” when there’s OIL involved. They do NOTHING to help the people in bondage of other countries. The word OIL makes the USA move its azz.

      I live here Hillary Clinton's from my state. And I'm well aware she should be on trial at the ICC for pushing for the coup in Honduras just as she pushed Obama to invade Libya. And you can see what the results are obviously. Things like this are why the world hates her... the massive corruption arrogance lying and ties to Wall Street are why the US hate her and why right now she's looking like she'll lose in November. I wish Al Jazeera would report the truth about this and name Obama and Clinton specifically b/c this is all on them. No way the Honduran oligarchy could stand w/o US military intervention on behalf of N America and European TNCs.

      this is an Arab channel: I don't think they ever blamed so-called Arab royal families; of course they're going to blame 'evil White people'

    • @ireneuszpyc6684

      Laura;
      Arab "royal families" have billions of petro-dollars to invest; of course they invest that money in White men's corporations: it may not always be easy to place the blame (on evil White men or on Arab "royal families");
      look how much money Arabs invested in Citi Bank, for example

    The needs of the many out weigh the needs of few. Don't get in the way of other people's success. Especially when it involves governments and energy.
    One of the biggest problem facing Hondurans is the idea that the US or someone else will solve their problems.
    They have to educate themselves and embrace new positive ideas. Their young men go to the gang instead of college or vocational training.
    The gang has more structure than their government. Organized it's no wonder they are so powerful since their are no other groups like them that are good. It's a criminals even the businesses and government. Their attitude toward death and violence of their own people is terrible. When your poor you can't get in the way like that.

    Why would anyone in such a poor country block a hydroelectric dam?Hydroelectric power would contribute toward improving living standards of the population and reduce crime!

    • @melt5075
      @melt5075 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hydroelectric dams create a less oxygenated water which makes conditions for wildlife uninhabitable in some cases. it disrupts river ecology and requires transport infrastructure that is intrusive to wildlife and environment. being poor has nothing to do with wanting the land and resources to be taken care of

    • @merc340sr
      @merc340sr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@melt5075 You might have a different opinion if you lived with no running water, no electricity, no heat ,....I'm sorry, being poor has everything to do with how we handle the environment. The environment provides just about everything we rely on for our living standards, minerals, metals, wood, oil, fuel, food, etc. If you had children living in squalor like in many African countries, I'm sure the environment would take a back seat to your list of priorities...

    • @melt5075
      @melt5075 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@merc340sr Disruption and diminished quality of life for Indigenous people is not mutually exclusive with providing better living conditions for poor people all over the world. Subsequently, they pulled out of the project after the murder of Berta Caceres. Honduras today operates on 10% solar energy, which is longer lasting, and also abates global warming. i understand what you're saying about placing environmental concerns over the lives of people, which is not my view at all, but I can see how that came off as insensitive. I was only trying to answer your question "why would anyone do this?" anyway 1/5th of the yearly us military budget could provide clean water for the entire world. So, no hate to movements who fight for continued protection of land and resources from exploitation of the wealthy industrial class. much hate to the police-state and the imperialist nation who create poverty by violent force and restricting fair trade for their labors
