  • Across Guatemala, thousands of families have been affected by mass murder, torture, and repression dating back to the country's civil war. Up to 45,000 civilians were forcibly disappeared during the 36-year conflict; an estimated 200,000 were killed.
And while peace accords were signed in 1996, the war crimes of that era have largely gone unpunished. Now with the help of forensic evidence and the testimony of survivors, some former military leaders are facing trial for the first time.
Jason Motlagh traveled to Guatemala to meet some of the families still searching for justice -- and the truth about what happened to their loved ones.

That’s because the US supported the regime that did this and even helped train a lot of the soldiers that did this at the School of the Americas in Georgia.

In college is where you get to read and understand a lot of what the USA did to other countries the past. No in High School. In High School just teach them how to be religious and base everything on "patriotism"... to justify what you see in this documentary...

Great documentary...the maya(mam?) interpreter is obviously not relating what they are saying. You would think Al Jazeera would have taken the time to find a professional interpreter...I'm glad someone had the good sense to back translate the recording!
Another piece of advice to the news reporter don't use "tú" for everyone, you are not in Miami or New York and it is disrespectful. See Spanish Explanation below.

Causes its not Spanish. If your referring to the people in beginning of the video. The language is Ixil, its one of 21 Mayan language in Guatemala.

    • @karinec.2131

Sometimes they’re not speaking Spanish, other times they speak it as a second language so their speech and grammar are a little off

You so called Guatamalans are the tribe of Zebulon and one of the 12 tribes of Isreal. The lords true name is Yawahah which means he is in the Hebrew language and his sons true name is Yawashi which means he delivers in the Hebrew language. Read tbe Kjv bible and get understanding. Genesis 49:13 Zebulon shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and the he shall be for an haven of ships; And his border shall be unto Zidon.
