I have seen the Optimus sorting video and wasn't very impressed but Dr Jimfan and your explanation gave me a much better perspective, this is training the AI model. I am much more impressed especially with the scale and difficulty of the training, Tesla is very serious about the robot.
The robot will not only help in dangerous boring jobs but also will be able to help the handicapped and elderly.

@@leesweehuat when did you see proof of this, other than a crappy video with some unproven claims? the differents between Boston Dynamics and Tesla is that Boston Dynamics showed how they controlled their bots, Tesla only said so, never showing any evidence that supports this. and how do you even know it can be easily trained? only because Tesla said so? they also said they figured out FSD 8 years ago, and it still doesn't function. don't fall for their lies untill they show actual evidence that it's legit.
Optimus needs simulated training - tele-operated training probably isn’t even necessary.
Simulation is scaleable. Many factory jobs are very easy to simulate.
Google has amazing demos how well this works. Like zero-shot embodied AI that’s amazingly good at doing extremely complex stuff, like walking on a yoga ball as if it’s normal.
I honestly can’t believe Optimus team is investing so much in tele-operations for training simple repetitive tasks.
I had a startup in the robotic teleoperation space a couple years ago but saw the writing on the wall back then even. It’s not even debatable now given the clearly superior demonstrations of synthetic training.
The Tesla robot has almost caught up to the kind of projects kids make with Lego Mindstorms.

Simple. Hire back some of the tens of thousands they laid off, strap them up with sensors and record them doing various task.

Yes, but consider that there are literally millions of tasks that Optimus needs to be trained for, both in and out of the factory... so as a robot trainer, someone could be employed for many years.
If machines didn’t replace human work, 95% of us would be subsistence farmers, like we were 200 years ago.
The training will be augmented with 3d simulations. The amount of compute they are about to have should supply that path. Learning could begin to happen at the speed of compute. Matrix style training in no time.
You run the sim. If the movement is defective, AI will determine that and adjust. If the sim is defective AI will determine that and adjust. After the sim is adjusted, AI will run it as a simulation a bazillion times in a minute. Then, when it's happy, it sends it to optimus and runs it at real speed, looking for results. If more adjustments are nessecary, it will again make those adjustments running it a bazzion times. Then feed it to optimus for real world real time results. The more the AI does this, the more the AI will learn exactly what kind of adjustment yield what kind of results. It will eventually assess and make 30 or 100 adjustments at once. Then run only one sim a bazzilion times a minute for all 30 or 100 different adjustments hitting all the parameters on the first try.

Say, don’t forget about Teslabot freeze switches. perhaps a magnetic tummy pull disabler, a CP0 like neck switch, and a chest punch disrupter switch! Why is noone talking about such trouble stoppers?
I think they will be sent to Mars. Basic functions of putting together habitats and setting up solar panels etc will be completed with AI. Some system of teleoperation will be used also. I can’t get my head around the delay but perhaps the Earth operator will complete tasks in a simulated environment. a scan of the area is provided to earth, human operator acts in VR and ‘Optimars 1’ completes tasks as closely as possible using combined tele operation and AI.
We should see a practice landing and habitat prep sometime in about 3-4 years.
It might be possible to send tele-operators to stay in Mars orbit for a period of time before attempting a human landing on Mars. Mars orbit and return is far easier to achieve than Mars landing and return...

given Tesla's track record, they won't deliver on their claims. don't believe what they say untill they've shown evidence that confirms it. they won't reach mars that soon. eventhough Elon said that this year people would walk around on mars. the guy sells lies to inflate the Tesla stocks, so he can capitalize on it. don't fall for it
I’m thinking unflattering things for the present state of Optimus. I can see the vast potential but it appears its timeline to be similar to FSD. Only the vast capacity upgrade in compute will accelerate the bot’s development- apparently. Honestly just an opinion.
don't even believe that it's AI powered. some of their videos are to inconsistant with this claim, and also their track record makes it unlikely that there is any truth to this.
Simulation and video data may work for training robots.
How to you integrate a bot into an mfg operation that does things on a trade secrets basis. How do you keep things only within your group of bots.
After General training of the fleet of General Purpose Tesla could include an option to purchase a VR set to train their Bot for specialized duties

I think you mean it was capable of providing emergency support in a fall but I wouldn’t even wager much on that based on the look of it. It was likely just power and data.

Maybe it's time for Tesla to build a better mousetrap. Perhaps vastly improved and inexpensive laser gyros for precision motion/position capture? Time will inform us all at some point.

it's not gonna happen. atleast not by anything that Tesla produces while Elon is in charge.
Big factory will have canteens, so will need chefs. dishwashers, servers etc; there will be cleaners, there will be workers on the floor doing all sorts; constructions going on etc etc, landscaping that needs tending, maybe a laundry? Suspect there are many options for training the robots in various general jobs beyond making cars in a Tesla plant and suppose at some point when good enough, employees could take them home.
The robot needs to be able to learn by being given verbal instructions and just watching not by aping sensor ridden employees. Babies learn by watching and then copying. That is the only way when teh development gets to a certain stage.

1:33 I commend you on noting that Musk was upfront about the teleoperation. At the time many wags were claiming a “gotcha” and using words like “caught” to make it look like a scoop. Even some of the more legitimate commentators got mixed up and reported it as a “gotcha”. I’m not an Elon fanboy but it was a bit cheap by those critics who did know the score and played it as a scandal anyway.
Teleoperation, is only a quick initial programming tool to help supplement their quest to be the first AGI. Teach the kid to ride the bike and when it grows up it will become the next Travis Pastrana _ forever….l. Ps it probably will become “adult” in just a matter of years.

This just seems like the wrong way to train robots. If this is how robots are trained, then the AI needs to progress further. It looks to me like Tesla is taking the wrong approach to AGI. it’s analogous to using lidar and radar to do full self driving - that we believe is the wrong approach to FSD. I think this approach to robotics is just smoke and mirrors.

Elon didn't "make it clear" that his robot wasn't autonomous; the video was deliberately misleading. If they had framed the shot to show the teleoperator, that would have made it clear. Don't enable that clown.
I still don’t see a reason why general purpose humanoid robots have a reason to be useful (c So then ar ost effective). In the videos, we see a normal ($1500?) robot take the battery from the production line, then put in a slot so the Optimus could put in a carrier. So then a ($50K?) humanoid robot does the same thing as the simple robot. Have you seen videos of manufacturing lines? A robot grabs 20 batteries (or whatever) and moves them to a carrier or box.
I don’t see how application specific robots wouldn’t always be more cost effective than a humanoid robot. It seems to me that Optimus is marketing BS.
Of course if you have seen the movie, Robot & Frank? In that case a humanoid makes sense.
Weird to see the folding a shirt demo. It’s a hard problem, so the demo is kind of like humans in a costume pretending to be robots? If it really worked, it would be significant, but still not cost effective. An illegal immigrant is still an order of magnitude more cost effective than a robot.😕
Some would buy a humanoid robot with very limited functions for 100,000 USD (like people buy an expensive car), then you can get OTA updates so it can be more useful. If I am sick, I would normally not need much help, but even a little help would go a long way.

The countries that produce the robots will jump way ahead of the countries that don't. China will build them and the U.S. can't afford to stand by and just watch. In 20 years they will have a robot army of a million fighters. So are we going to send our robots to fight them or are we going to have to send our sons and daughters to die? That will give them the edge. So we also have to develop them to keep up. Or look at outer space. We will need robots to go to Mars or whatever. Whatever country has robots will win the space race.

You can always be relied upon to get everything wrong.
1) Optimus when ramped up won’t cost anything like $100k, it’ll be around $20k and eventually $10k.
2) Even at $200k, the robot is significantly cheaper than humans at around $10/hour.
3) A human being paid $15/hour actually costs a lot more due to all the other benefits (holidays, sick leave, medical, dental, pensions etc.) and infrastructure to support them.

If you remember, he did no such thing UNTIL people noticed the glimpse of the tele-operator's hand off to the right in the video. i.e. He released a video with the tele-operator deliberately off camera, and deliberately said nothing about it until caught out. He chose to make it very UNclear, to begin with.
Look, it's a great bit of tech and it will do this stuff eventually but rewriting history to cover Elon's nonsense is not a good look.
No, if Elon was really trying to hide anything it would have been easy to keep the tele-operator far out of sight. Any fool could have done that. The reason they didn't is because they weren't attempting to fool anyone.

This is what they call in baseball an unforced error, and in politics, a self inflicted wound, as there was no need to play this deceitful game to begin with, as few people are impressed with sleight-of-hand polar tricks, that sooner or later, someone will discover your smoke and mirrors attempt to fool people into believe something that is not true.
So my advice to Elon is to just stick to the tried and true, facts about what’s really going on, and not engage in silly, deceitful spreading of misinformation, that only leads to you having to answer embarrassing questions, that no one wants to answer.

The assumption is that Tesla is not using high definition video to track and convert into training the movements of all Tesla employees in tasks that Tesla wants Optimus to be able to do. You might not as detailed or training issues but at the same time, Tesla is FAR better at things that what you and I might think they are. And we have no idea about their cameras around their factories, which they obviously have. How much would it take to have AI watch and convert employee movements into Optimus movements? Again, we have ZERO information about how to do this ourselves or what Tesla might be getting out of their videos where they are watching their employees work.
PS: You NEED cameras of every employee to make sure there isn't fraud with industrial accidents for insurance purposes. If you don't have that, you are an idiot and setting yourself up to a HUGE amount of liabilities.
