It's pretty funny to me that when Alex was trying to show off his knowledge of the scientific method (using terminology which is taught to 9th graders btw) he was mixing up the term Independent Variable and Dependent Variable.
FWIW an Independent Variable is a cause--something that is going to effect the variable that we're measuring at the end. The Dependent Variable will change based on changes to the independent variable (the clue is in the name: its outcome DEPENDS on what happens with the independent variable).

At the end of the day, I actually feel a lot of empathy towards Wurzelroot(Alex). This is a young man who’s cognitive dissonance is detaching him from reality, further isolating and entrenching him into a life where he will find difficulty interacting with people. We can only hope that he has a moment of clarity, to be able to see how far he has strayed and gleans enough that he will start a path towards returning to reality.
