  • If you start with a 2022 Yamaha MT09 that costs $9,499 and build it up can you make it into a 2022 Tracer 9GT with a price tag of $14,999? In today's episode of Shifted we go parts shopping to see if we can make it happen!

    Yes. It is worth the difference. It's NOT an identical bike with just throw ons.
    You left off cruise control (you need an MT09 SP or Tracer to get it), tank size is larger (range), wind protection (more than just a bigger windscreen), swing arm length (longer by design), you get an upgraded larger instrument cluster and front end lighting. Center stand. Of course the suspension and matching bags.. etc. If a buyer simply researches the two the math adds up.

    Tracer's wheel base is longer, the frame is designed to carry much heavier loads, wind protection on the legs till helmet, engine tuning, more aero dynamic, ergonomic riding position and much more. It's a proper touring bike. The MT 09 can get closer to a tourer and can be a proper city and occational tourer bike. Great Video!

      @@d0n_key correct, same as with the MT09. That's just to accommodate the different shape of the tail section, though. Load carrying capacity is actually lowest on the tracer (193kg vs 225 on the MT/XSR).

    I went through this exact scenario earlier this year. MT-09 or T9GT, ultimately I decided to splurge and got the T9GT.
    And it came down to the kind of riding I wanted to be able to do. Heading into my 30s I want to do some more long distance touring so considering the electronic suspension with remote preload, cruise control, adjustable windscreen, longer wheelbase to accommodate more weight, larger fuel tank, center stand, nicely integrated saddlebags, cornering lights, hand guards, heated grips and the extra TFT screen. That price difference starts to look a lot more reasonable. In my opinion totally worth the price when compared to other bikes in the sport touring segment. Thing is a beast.

    I was considering the Tracer 9 GT, the dealer even had two in stock but I wound up with an MT09 SP. My rational was that I would only need the bags and whatnot a time or two a year for touring but the rest of the time I would rather have the more nimble MT09. I spent more money than I expected to adding things like factory heated grips I had to order from Germany & a Corbin seat but the bike is perfect for me. The hardest part about getting it ready for touring is finding accessories for it. I ended up buying some throw over the seat bags and welding a rack I affixed to the back and took it on a 5 day camping trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway. What a great trip that was. The bike has served me well & has done everything I've asked of it. For me the MT was a better choice.

    A stacked MT-09 will NEVER be the touring capable rig that the Tracer is. Just like a built Tracer will never be the canyon/track capable carver that the MT-09 is. Yup, same motor with similar chassis, but the rest of the build is worlds apart. I'd have no problem justifying both of these bikes in my garage as they truly fit two completely different purposes. Good luck replicating the wind protection of the T9 on the MT, not only would it cost a fortune but you'd be riding something that looked like it was out of Mad Max when you were done.

For me, the stock seat becomes uncomfortable at about the one hour mark. In my search I was unable to find a comfort seat from Yamaha for sale in the US so I opted to send my stock seat to Russell Cycle Works in California (This was before Corbin came out with their version). Seat sorted and windscreen improved, this bike's a keeper.

    • @michaelglenn2468
      @michaelglenn2468 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cornering lights don't really work. Dual displays have received more negative feedback than positive. Wind guards are too small and don't provide the proper adjustability. The seat slope is bad and there is an aftermarket mod for it. The bigger fuel tank is nice.

    You forgot a few things.. handguards, the fairing, better lighting, and most of all... The cost of installation. So, maybe a few people out there can handle all the changes (and void the warranty in the process), but many people ar going to need someone else to handle the additions, and the cost would then be more than the Tracer.

  • @dougiequick1
    @dougiequick1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The worst thing about the Tracer is it carries SEVENTY extra pounds which is a lot! An appealing option would be the XSR if only they made an SP version of it like they do the MT09! I have a 22 Tracer9gt and I mostly love it but I wish it were lighter. I dont even need the beefed up heavy steel subframe because I dont carry a passanger ...IF I could custom build my own bike it would be the Tracer with XSR subframe and MT09SP rear Ohlins suspension. a full titanium exhaust and a tune....maybe carbon wheels and Brembo Stylema while I am dreaming...but then the Tracer Luggage would not fit so would have to come up with something different for that or else just have a large top box and a giant loop duffel for if /when ....although honestly I never even needed my side luggage since I bought the bike 10 months ago I am guessing my custom Tracer would be like 50 pounds or more lighter (less that 435 in other words) PLUS have at least 10hp more! But then there is even a better starting point which would be the yet to arrive 2023 Tracer 9GT PLUS! Which has a large one piece dash screen! AND Radar CRUISE! AND larger rear brake Computer linked to front brake ostensibly making it able to to emergency full on either front or rear brake and have the computer apply BOTH in the safest most efficent manner possible! meaning it would keep the suspension as balanced as possible rather than collapsing the front and/or underusing one end of the braking or the other! Just knowing in a full panic stop you cant screw up grabbing full brake on either pedal or lever is HUGE confidence inspiration no matter how great a rider you are! PLUS the radar part can apply the brakes and cut the throttle FOR YOU (at least if you are in cruise control is my understanding) So you can set the cruise at say 80mph and then tailgate your mate with your bike automatically keeping set distance while you do NOTHING but lean and steer! THAT is so cool! I might have to trade in my '22 on the '23....except I hear they aint bringing it to the US market....in fact i hear Yamaha is not bringing the tracer 9 gt to the US PERIOD for 2023 based on poor sales.....BUT maybe we will see a cafe version of XSR900SP for 2024? If not a full on R9??

Anyway You are already well over the tracer price difference but there is STILL a big ol elephant in the room .....the FUEL TANK on the tracer is significantly higher capacity at 5.2 gallons how you gonna add THAT to your MT? The only way you can get around paying $15k is to find a used one and good luck with that! I’d get a good throttle lock for cruise control. Rather have heated gloves. My Puig screen works fine for me. I got a roll top tail bag from Nelson Rigg. I’d get a throw over set of saddle bags if I needed them. I’d love a custom rear shock if I find one because I’m a heavy guy. I’d say a set of road 6 tires would be good because the s22 tires leave you wanting more in the rain and when it’s really cold. So no I wouldn’t spend that high of a premium. But I’d say the biggest difference that’s really going to plague the MT-09 is the gas tank size. I maybe get 100 miles before the light comes on

    $15k gives you pause... $20 gives me pause. I have 15 different wish lists on Amazon where I debate the worth of hundreds of different products... Some of which never get purchased and some wait 5 to 10 years for a prime day sale. 😂

    Who writes these scripts?... purposefully omitted the suspension... umm that's the most important part... and what about the dual TFT display?... ummmmmmmmmm

      They said why they did in the video. Becuse no one makes an electronically controlled suspension for the MT09, so they are just speculating what the price would be. As for the dash, that really doesn't effect the bike's performance and is more a personal choice.

    Too premium pricing - for same engine……
