I've done 4 Iron Butt rides in the last year and a half. 3 Saddlesore 1000 and 1 Butt Butt Burner 1500. You have to schedule your time and stops and stick to the plan. I did them with a small group of riders, and that helps a lot. the Saddlesore rides were between 17 and 19 hours, once you get the first ride under your belt the others are easier. Keep riding safe and and don't give up on the long hauls. P.S. I'm 67 years old. You can do this.

Good effort but that tire plug would have easily held for hundreds of more highway miles if you install them right.

I've ridden over 1000 miles on a plugged tire (not in one trip) but I understand the not wanting to risk it, sometimes a freshly installed tire plug won't hold air, would take more than 30 miles and more than an hour to feel comfortable on it.

True... In a Colorado Utah trip i end up with 5 plugs one was double and did around 4500 miles in a 8 day with that tire... End up changing the tire after another 2000 miles extra to the ones I put in the trip

I drove 650 miles (i know not anywhere close to 1k) and I already found this to be extreme. I did it on a tracer 900GT 2020. For me those 650 miles was my absolute limit and I did the wise thing and pulled in to a hotel to sleep. Everyone has different limits, listening to yours is the best thing to do.

I did the saddlesore 1000 last August, it’s no joke. I just got my certification a couple weeks ago
Advice: always go over by at least 10% just in case IBA can find a shorter route between your stops you may have used to cheat or your odometer could be off a bit.
The ride is very difficult and so is the certification process. The difficulty is what makes the whole thing mean so much.

My brother and I finished our Iron Butt (second attempt) about two months ago. Took us about 18 hours, went really smoothly. We didn't have to do any filming though. Don't give up yet! Best advice I got is plan your route completely in advance, and STICK TO THAT PLAN!

I've done two 1000 to 1100+ mile days on my FJR1300, as well as many 600-800 milers. Usually I try to stop for gas every 2 hours, and stop for water, snacks, and stretching every hour in between. But I'll go 2 hours without stopping some times. I've found that my back doesn't get any more sore after 2 hours, so the next 14-16 hours my top priority is to keep my mind focused. A good music playlist, podcasts, and rambling to myself does the trick.

Best of luck to Chase and the rest of the team on their next attempt. I would recomend doing on a bike like a concours 14 or fjr 1300. Bikes eat up the miles and 2 hour stints between fuel on the concours feel like nothing.

As a long distance driver, bro, caffeine and interstate is the only way to really cover dumb mileage. Pick your highway, set the cruise to 75-80, find your favorite podcast/discography, and just drive, and make your gas stops be no longer than 15 minutes. 1000 miles in 24 hours is doable but you gotta stay on interstate

OC: Haven't done one, yet. that said, I would like to take a shot at it but on a larger loop. Know a guy who did one and he was good on time, but he want filming the thing with a chase car and crew. So his stops were fuel, power bar, bottle of water, and go. If these things were easy, everyone would do one. Good first effort, maybe two cars leap-frogging stops (or short-cutting across the state) and a bit faster turn around at the fuels stops.

I did a SS 1000, by riding up to MO on a Triumph T-Bird Storm, swapping bikes and riding back down to Texas on a Kawasaki Vaquero (one of the few that have completed an SS on two different bikes on the same SS). At the swap, I was at the shop for 2 hours getting the once over on the other bike and I got a flat on the way back. I was able to get it into a local shop and they had a new tire on it in less than an hour. I hit 1k miles at 22 hours and 43 minutes. Plan your route for contingencies, not to pace yourself. That's how you fail your SS and BB rides. I've completed over a dozen SS and a couple BB (1500 under 24) and pacing yourself leads to failure more often than not. Plan ahead for stuff to happen.

You would have been fine iv had plugged tiers on motorcycles and left them for over a year. But always go with your gut

OC. I want to try an Iron Butt, but I ride an MT-07 so things have to change a lil before I try it.

You limped it because of a tire plug? It's fine to ride normal with them. They'll stay in the life of the tire if inserted correctly and have no affect on the ride or safety.

Could you do an iron butt by trying to find out what a 1000 mile circle around Atlanta would look like? I.e how far out do you go to complete 1 full(ish) circular lap

Must be really disheartening to get that close and not make it. I would have just let the debris in the tire until the ride was over if you had already been riding on it for awhile. Seemed to pose no immediate danger.

I don't know brother all you had to do was write another 70 miles 50 to the shop was another 70 slowly on back roads you went that far does not make any sense to me

I've never understood the thought process of doing something extremely unenjoyable just for the purpose of saying "I did this" . I wish they'd come up with a certificate for walking barefoot across 50 feet of hot coals just to see how many people felt the need to do that for bragging rights. :)

O.C. - during my trip to california and back I had a few stops along the way.. first was from chicago, il to hill city, sd which was just shy of 1k. (960 ish miles from where I live) and that was a long time.. then I went from hill city, SD to wadsworth, NV and that was 1100 miles ish. Needless to say those two times riding that long (15 plus hrs the first time and 19 plus hrs the next really made me go hmm no need ot do that again EVER. Things I wish I knew or had - windshield, extra padding for my butt (better seat) more snacks/water, different bike LOL.. I did this on my vrod muscle not the best for long trips and not the best for gas mileage.
Anyway the one thing that kept me going was having a true destination not just randomly riding for 1k miles. so next time I think you should do a round trip that is truly 1k if you try or just go to a place that is 500 plus miles away. cause now you have to come back.
good stuff and glad you learned a lot. cheers.

You should have used Harley or Indian , it would have been much more comfortable , sitting upright all the time feet tucked in it does take a toll on lower back

Cool video, questionable route... Why not just go 500 miles and 500 back?
Why are you stopping every 150 miles, surely the tracer 9 can go more then 150 miles a tank..?
