  • Join Eric as he tests the Touch-N-Go ignition system on his new Weber Performer Deluxe BBQ Grill. This is Weber's Performer kettle grill model 15501001. This is upgraded from your typical Weber kettle BBQ grill. It is a charcoal grill with a "Touch & GO" gas starter. It has a lot of great features including an upgraded ash catcher, an attached table for preparing your food, and a tub for holding a bag of charcoal. One year ago, I made a commitment to stop eating processed convenience foods. I decided to learn to cook "real" food. Join me! Let's learn to cook together! Enjoy! Please share!

My Weber One Touch Silver was very durable (over 10 years old with just one scratch), but this is way more convenient with both the ash container, the lid thing, the table (and the optional gas starter). Two years later, and this grill is still holding up quite well.

      I bought a Weber Silver 10 years ago and never put a cover on it. Used it in BBQ comps, left it out in the weather, and only changed the grill once. It works. It is way cheaper than this. The only thing I didn't like about it is one of the legs comes loose if I move it (must drill a hole and put a screw in there) and the ashes go into something the thickness of an aluminum Frisbee. Moving the metal things to free the Frisbee and dump it is a minor pain. But it was cheap compared to this. I think the Weber Gold cost $$ more, but has improved ash collecting, much like on this one. I have a folding metal table that I sat next to my grill. The only thing that got me in trouble is where to put the hot lid since the Silver has no way to hold it. If the Gold holds it like this, then you can save a few hundred dollars. In all honesty, the gas is "nice" but no way mandatory. I ran out. Was too lazy to hit up Wal-Mart. So I use the chimney to start my charcoal. Works fine. But the gas is lazier, for sure. but if I want to light a bunch of charcoal, then the chimney works fine. Good luck in making up your mind and hope this helped a bit.

    • @Davidd77
      @Davidd77 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Eric! We have a new deck and I'm (errrrr... my wife) is looking for something cleaner looking. The built in table is nice, and it hides that charcoal basket as well. The different between gas vs no-gas is $50 and your video helped show me that it's worth it. I'm a chimney guy but it gives me an option if I'm feeling lazy. Thanks again and happy grilling!

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it's helped David. I still use a chimney if I run out of gas. I just sit the chimney on the lower grate until it's ready. but then, if I have gas, I just use it and it saves the 2 seconds to go find some newspaper. The charcoal basket is handy since its right there. I've never had an issue of it getting wet when I have the cover on. My garage isn't too far away, but it does make things that more convenient. I had done the older setup for 10 years and was happy enough. But I do like this setup because my old Weber was a Silver so it lacked the lid holder and the improved (deeper) ash collector, plus I don't have an issue with a leg falling off every time I lift it to move it.. Hope it all works out for you.

      I use charcoal. This is just to help start the charcoal in case you don't wanna use a chimney. I'm guessing it's Weber's way of compromise for those that like the convenience of a gas grill (which I don't have any). Love my WSMs and my Backwoods Fatboy.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FitAnge S Don't know if I ever shared this with you or anyone. Shortly after me and Amy got together, decades ago, I used a charcoal Weber ONCE and it was not fun. I forgot about using a chimney. So used lighter fluid like most people. Then I had too much charcoal, so I had no idea how to create a 'cool zone'. So I used a hose and put out the fire. Then scratched my head how to re-lite it. Needless to say, that chicken lost his life in vain and we used gas grills for the next 10 years until Amy bought me a Weber one-touch silver and a few Weber Smokey Mountains (and we learned how to cook competitively). Yes, this thing makes starting charcoal much easier, but chimneys aren't that hard to figure out. Not too big of a grill, but with the built in table, it is bigger and heavier than a stand-alone grill. Still, my older grill is not as sturdy and can be a pain with 'where to put the lid'? Yeah, I like this thing!!!!

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Jack, according to the bbqdryrubs dot com/weber-performer-delux-vs-premium site, this ignition is the difference. Weber is charging $50 for it. The Deluxe has it and the Premium doesn't. Does your research concur?

    Are these Gas-lit Charcoal cookers still around? If not, why not? I've seen a review saying the butane gas canister is hard to get and the lighter switch plays up. But either way, I want one (in Australia).

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Steve, I've never heard issues with "gas lit charcoal cookers" before. Other than this propane starter feature, I'm completely off gas for any grills. I love charcoal and use my chimney way more often than this starter. I hate most gas grills for the reason that they are built like garbage and have issues with ignition switches and cheap stainless steel burners. Not to mention they look bad when they start rusting. Then there's all that grease mess, unless you're good at cleaning them. This Weber's been really good to me. I like it a lot. But it ain't cheap compared to the simpler ones, like the One Touch Silver that I've used frequently for the 10 years I've had it prior to this grill.

    • @SteveMagr
      @SteveMagr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @spyder6423
      @spyder6423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly either you have a leak or you're not shutting the valve off completely.

  • @rudy_g51g2
    @rudy_g51g2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just hooked my propane up tonight and started the fire to test. When I began to turn the dial to close the line, the flamed stopped but there was a small flame at the point where the gas line connects to the valve. it went away very quickly but I wanted to ask someone and make sure that is supposed to happen as I have never really dealt with propane before.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Rudy, I haven't noticed any gas leaks or flames in places other than inside the grill where the charcoal goes. To test for a gas leak, such as at 0:54 in the video, use a small amount of liquid soap on the fitting and open the valve to see if you have bubbles (gas leak) without using the igniter or any sparks to ignite the gas. You may need to ask your Weber dealer about this.

  • @angel4583
    @angel4583 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do t like the smell of the gas, do i really need the gas assist? Can i just use any starter?

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Angel. The gas assist is to help you start your charcoal without the usual fuss of using a chimney, paper, and a match or lighter. The small amount of propane shouldn't be much of a "smell" problem as you would place your charcoal over the end of the gas fitting and quickly open the valve and hit the igniter. Thus not much of a leak. But, this is just a convenience. My Weber is old enough now that the igniter doesn't work. I can still use the gas assist by using a lighter (a loooonnnggg lighter) to spark the gas in the grill that the igniter would use (or use the chimney, which I do most of the time anyways).

    Does this reduce your setup time at all when you compare it to lighting your charcoal with a chimney.

    • @mattchumoore4214
      @mattchumoore4214 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really depends.
      If you're using the baskets then not so much. If you're putting it directly on the charcoal grate. Then yes. By quite a bit.
      You can go ahead and install any grates or whatever on top of the charcoal while its starting

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on how much charcoal you put in a chimney can take 15-20 minutes to grey/ash over. This gas assist is only running for 5 minutes, which is not close to the amount of time to get the charcoal ready. So to me, it's about the same. How do you prefer to start your charcoal? That's all this really boils down to.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No. Lighter fluid kinda soaks into the charcoal and has that awful smell. Propane start up just lights the charcoals enough to get them started. They don't absorb any smells from it. You can still use a chimney and start the charcoal the traditional way too.

      @@jbaeza915 I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've done a few videos using it. I still have my Weber Silver One-Touch (10 years old and now only used when camping). But I had to have a side table and still no where to put the hot lid when you open it on that thing. The ash system on the Weber Performer can be a bit clunky when emptying the ashes, but it does work well. I really like this.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. The WSM is a smoker, so it serves a totally different need. Yes, you could take the water pan out, then you would be cooking "direct", but the grates are still way above the coals. So it really depends on what you need. For me, this replaces my Weber One Touch Silver, that had been my go to grill for 10 years with no issues. It lacked a side table and no where to store the lid when accessing the grill. I used a metal portable table to mitigate those issues. The high price for this grill would have been a no-go, if it wasn't for Amy buying for me as a gift. I really like it. So, if you only have enough money or space for one item and you want to smoke, then the WSM might work for you. But I can't guarantee how it will grill for you. If you buy the (relatively newer) larger one, then you will have more grilling area to work with. The cheaper and smaller older WSM (like the one I have) likely wouldn't be of much interest. I hope that helps answer your question.

    I was expecting more for the price, is this all it does? I was hoping the gas would be for heating the table so that you can use it as a hot plate.
    This thing costs 50% more than the Master Touch and for that you get a table and a tube to connect a propane canister to. Am I missing something? Surely it does more than that....

      @EricLearnstoCook 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I'm not familiar with the Master Touch. I've used my Weber Silver for 10+ years since I tossed my Kenmore gas grill in the trash. This thing cost way more than double the price of that. But for the price, I have a much more secure ash disposal canister (Silver is like an aluminum Frisbee that falls anytime one of the three legs falls off), built in table, just way more secure, and this gas ignite system. I think Amy paid around $400 for this back in the day. Weber is never inexpensive, but they last a long time if you take care of it. Does this have a gas heating table? No. It's a charcoal grill with a gas igniter to help start charcoal for those that like the convenience of gas but want the taste of charcoal.

    Hello Eric! I was watching you video and i have a question. Just let me know if the moment install the bottle propane in the pipe under on watch is very hard? or need some specialist . Actually use the rapid fire weber accesorie but i need learn use all in my little precious performer deluxe LOL

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Juan. Thanks for watching. The bottle should screw in easily. My igniter finally corroded (they all do eventually) so I'll have to look into replacing it. But I can still start the charcoal with a lighter (the long one made for this or long matches) since the igniter isn't creating a spark (or back to using the chimney.)

      Eric mostly just uses Kingsford for every day type charcoal...or Royal Oak. He also uses Wicked Good Charcoal too

    My igniter has been very unreliable for some time now. Sometimes, it ignites on one or two pushes of the button, while increasingly more often, I'm pushing it a good ten times without anything happening. Obviously, I get around it by just lighting the coals the conventional way, but my wife prefers the igniter when she uses the grill.
    Anyone have a simple fix? I've Googled and haven't found any straightforward answers. I guess I'll contact Weber, but I just figured I'd ask here, while it was on my mind.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You may need to replace the igniter. This is commonly a wear item on gas grills. On old gas grills, I would turn the gas on carefully and use a long Bic lighter, the ones for BBQs or a long match would also work. You could do the same here as well. You just want to be careful.

    How many 5 minute lights per 1 pound tank?

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching. I'm sorry that I never counted them (and on a few instances got sidetracked and let the starter run a little longer than 5 mins). If these tanks can burn on a Coleman stove for a few hours on high, then that might be about the same use as here and would be about 2 dozen starts. Just keep a spare handy so you aren't blindsided.

      I usually hit one of the buttons to acknowledge the alarm, and it shuts off by itself a little later.

      Just press the start/stop button and it will automatically turn off in a bit. You can set the timer to zero again by pressing the hour and minute buttons at the same time once the timer is stopped.

    Can I connect an LP gas cylinder directly without having Propane gas Cartridge? If I can wich type of connector is required?

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a hose and connector that fits the LP gas cylinder and the propane gas cartridge, then of course you could. You have an LP gas cylinder, right? It's connector is much bigger than the little gas cartridge. You can see the gas cartridges first had at any Wal-Mart or any camping supply store. So once you see what their fittings look like, you can search for hoses/adapters. Remember, this is just to start the charcoal because you don't want to use a chimney and newspaper like most folks use. It's not a deal killer. Besides, you can probably do 24 lightings if you religiously turn the propane off at 5 minutes or so.

    Once you go lumped, you're meat will be pumped!!!
    That cracklin' coal, is lube for the soul!!!
    Get ya a big lumped coal block, but make sure to double 🤜🤛 that clock!!! (Your 🔥 can get really hot with lumped , so monitor those temps.) But once you get that lumped charcoal, and taste the flavors from grilling, and smoking with it, it will steal your soul! Your every waking thought... tour every deep slumbered dream... they will all be about grilling/and smoking once you switch over to natural lump coal. You'll eventually be making your own. And that's when the magic truly begins.

      Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. I'm sure there's some people out there that may not know how this works. But more importantly, they are looking for reviews to justify the $400 it takes to buy this thing. Or why get this when gas is sooooooo much easier and faster right? So if this helps those types of people, then I did them a service. If some people just like to watch this thing, then good for them. Once again, thanks for watching.

    The only complaint I have with mine is that it bleeds out the propane tank if left screwed in. There’s no leaks in the fitting that screw together. What I’m saying is if you turn the gas knob off you can still hit the starter button and propane is going through. So after I light it I have to unscrew the bottle because I have it drain a bottle over night.
