As a mosh-er from the 90s we had a code . We dont mosh to hurt and if someone went down we picked them up. Simply as that. We never tried to hurt someone. If it got out of hand there was always a giant on the sidelines with arms crossed ready to take out the trash if you get what I mean

Yeah, that's been my experience through the 00's and 10's as well (Western Canada)
If someone falls, you pick them up. Mosh pits are a way to release some energy and get more into the music, not beat the shit out of people. If you want to fight, take it outside where it's not the venue's or the band's problem or responsibility.

I went to this year's Pulp Summer Slam to see Megadeth, the only metal fest here in the Philippines sadly. When it was I See Star's set, which I don't know why they are in a metal fest in the first place, kids go hardcore dancing throwing fists and those "Anselmo" types taunting people like they wanna fight. Bunch of idiots. Good thing I'm tall enough, they don't wanna mess with me haha.

The first Slayer show I enjoyed in 98 at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom had a massive mosh pit. Every time some e fell, the collective stopped picked them up, hugged them sweatily and said you ok? Love you man.
It was amazing. When my guitar player fell and his glasses came apart, 3 strangers brought us the pieces so I could pop the lenses back in. Good times!

That's how it's supposed to be. Luckily, it still is at metal shows. Somebody falls, everyone immediately forms a circle around them to give them room to get back up. It's common courtesy. If a core band plays, things often look a bit different.

Y'know 15 year old me just wanted to go to a hardcore show and have a good time. My friend was in one of the opening bands. I was just minding my own business having a good time, when a small group started eyeing me and my friend because we didnt really fit the scene. Whole entire show consisted of them attempting to go out of their way to crowdkill us. One of them at one point knocked my phone out of my hand and stomped it to pieces and played it off as an accident. Got hit "accidentally" so many times. Fuck this scene, just listen to the music and have fun and leave me the fuck alone.

I've been to quite a few Metalcore concerts in my teens, while actually dressing the part and often felt uncomfortable closer to the stage because there were also a considerable amount of such idiots in the Pit. I've stopped going to core shows for that very reason, I've never had any trouble or ever felt unsafe at Black, Death, Folk, Heavy, Power, Thrash or Slam Metal concerts. If you want to mosh there it's fun and if you don't, you're being left alone.

I was at a testament show, and they were playing D.N.R (which was their opener and completely unexpected) so my friend and I ran into the pit thirty seconds into the song I got shoved, and someone spilled there beer, and the way my friend described it is I did a back flip, and landed on my back, but the back of my head hit the floor pretty hard. In less then two seconds I had like four different dudes rush in to pick me up. And to add to this story even more, their was these two dudes who kept throwing people into the pit that clearly wanted no part, so this 6'4 buff dude looked at them, then I shit you not he looked like fucking Vader when he did this, he grabbed each one by the throat and threw them into the pit, and they got the living shit beaten out of them. One was wearing a sombrero and that thing was ripped into shreds by the time he basically limped out of the pit

I recall being in a moshpit in my prime, and hell we were moshing like there was no tomorrow. However, the most amazing thing happened. A guys glasses fell off as he was moshing, and everyone immediately moved backward and many helped to find the glasses. Once they were found, he put them back on and everyone continued moshing and had an awesome night. I miss those days. It’s very possible to mosh hard and take care of each other simultaneously. My heart goes out to this poor girl.

While I'm not a fan of mosh pits, what you describe I haven't just seen but have been involved in as well. I remember something like this happening back in 2015 when I was at Sabaton Open Air. I was in a huge crowd, jumping and head banging, when I saw that the guy next to me was down on all fours. I stopped and asked him if he was OK and his girlfriend said, "he dropped his cellphone". And you guys know what happened? About 20 guys around us stopped their head banging/jumping after I pulled up the flash light (I was camping during the concert and it was in the middle of the night) to help him search for his cellphone. Furthermore, after his girlfriend told the others what had happened, five more guys joined the search for this guy's cellphone and amazingly we found it and it was still in one piece. Once he found his cellphone, everyone basically grabbed a beer and continued to have a good time. My point is; when someone goes down for any reason during a concert, be it in a mosh pit or the crowd in front of the musicians, everyone knows to stop whatever they are doing in case something bad is about to happen so no one gets hurt - THAT IS PROPER CONCERT ETIQUETTE!

Going on for decades? No. that guy confuses this with moshing. The difference in a legit mosh pit being that you pushed and shoved and crashed into one another and maybe the occasional nudge of the elbows. Punching, kicking and stomping was never acceptable and if someone fell you picked them up... any mosh pit I was ever involved in, if someone began using fists or kicking or stomping someone who was down, the one who crossed that line was either removed by venue staff or the other moshers got them sorted out. This is just jackassery.

I think the issue is that she wasn't actually IN the pit, she didn't want to be in the pit (from the sounds of it) and it was literally an unwarranted assault where some stupid fucker decided he was having a bad day and wanted to take it out on someone else...
It could have been anyone. Man, woman or child, it doesn't make assault acceptable. And doing stupid shit like that is NOT a mosh pit, a mosh pit is a very different experience and if you don't want to be a part of the pit, you don't do it... I had a girl cling to me at an A7X concert because she didn't want to go into the pit, she was almost pulled in once and when they realised she didn't want to they STOPPED... If someone fell in the pit they'd be dragged out, or picked up, not stomped on...

Ever notice how these guys always leave a show with not a scratch, it’s not because they’re super tough, it’s because they space themselves out and make sure they don’t hit each other. I’d have no problem if they stuck together and hit each other, but fists, elbows, knees, and feet only ever contact unsuspecting bystanders and that’s no accident. Total cowards, hitting unsuspecting people and disappearing into the crowd before they have a chance to react.

Absolutely. The last local show I went to (before covid hit) wasn't even a hardcore show (death metal), and one dude was trying to crowdkill the tiny venue when I was there with a pregnant friend of mine. One of our male friends made short work of him when he refused to stop, and "accidentally" punched him in the facd a few times and knocked his ass down. Needless to say, the dude stopped right then and there. Protect the crowd and kick crowdkillers to the curb where they belong.

Moshing is fine. Crowd Killing is stupid. There's kind of an unspoken pit etiquette when it comes to this stuff. You get too violent and either you get told to knock it off or someone hits you back. If someone's on the floor, you help them back up. You DONT hit people who aren't in the pit. And if you find yourself punching the lights out of kids in the crowd, you STOP or face the consequences. That dude definitely needs to see consequences for his actions.

Would you consider him responsible, because he should be able to control his body, he was running fast with force and the intention to cause damage if he collided with someone (even if he didnt mean to collide with her), etc, or her to blame for walking onto the football field in the middle of the game? For two, my brain is telling me that the mosh pit is not the same as a football field in many ways, but the primary one being that a football field is a place where non-participants are not allowed to access during a regular event. I think a more appropriate analogy would be simply driving. I get on the road everyday knowing that I'm statistically likely to get hurt at some point while on the road. If one chooses to drive unsafely, they choose to put others at risk as well. I may have the right do it, but it still makes me the asshole if I choose to do so and hurt someone in the process.
And third, I don't mind disagreeing about a topic, but please don't insult me or others for doing so.

I disagree with your driving analogy, it'd be more like driving your car into a demolition derby and then being surprised when someone plows into the side of you. These hardcore venues are full of idiots who hit eachother while pretending to "dance", you should know that before going to them. I've never been to one of these shows and never plan to, and I know what they are, I'm sure the girl who got hurt knew what they are and the risks associated. If it was foul play or not legitimate, he would've got in trouble, but all charges were dropped because it was obvious to most people that there is a risk of injury going to one of those things. My guess is that as they sell tickets they tell you that you may get hurt and can't sue or something.

As others have stated, we always looked out for each other. If someone went down, they got picked up. Now ... to speak to this incident, I'm guessing this girl wasn't in the pit, but on the edge. There is a expectaion to NOT have some fist swinging dipshit flying into the crowd ... where there IS NOT A PIT!
Also ... you can cry "culture" all you want. You keep this up and your shows will vanish. I've watched several good venues either close or stop having punk / hardcore shows altogether because of pits, crowd surfing, stage diving. The liability is too much. So keep it up Denver, and you won't have a "culture" left.

There was the understanding that you didn't get into the pit unless you're willing to get knocked around a bit but even in the pit people aren't throwing punches at each other. I've seen people line up others and outright, "attack them"!
It's a form of accepted "bullying", as the groups single out, other groups and attack each other in this cowardly way, hiding within the safety of their cliques, not fearing reprisal against them individually, while shaming the victims for having been injured.
It's very much indicative of modern day, "frat culture", which we all know is frowned upon and has lead to heavy fines and charges in recent history!
The venue is completely responsible and should be held accountable for all patrons within the confines of their walls! Which at the same time doesn't negate the patron's responsibility to one another, regardless of the event.
This is an issue that has been ignored for far too long!
My heart goes out to this, "victim" and the atrocious attack upon her!
Get a lawyer, get them to release the video publicly, and put everyone's head on the block, the venue, the attacker, their Security and everyone else in between!

Even the original hardcore moshing you would make sure no one got injured too bad but now these drunk dirt bags are coming into hardcore shows and trying to litteraly kill people. @@junglemast3r I don’t know about that whole police brutality thing. In the 70’s, before Sid Vicious joined the Sex Pistols, he would be in the crowd of every show jumping up and down, and called it the pogo. He would eventually knock into people. Then he started purposely knocking into a group of kids who were alway right in front of the stage known as The Bromley Contingent, because they got on his nerves. It caught on fast, everyone was pogoing and spitting on each other which they called gobbing. When it made it to America, the CBGB’s crowd wasn’t into all the spitting, thankfully, and it all just evolved into moshing.
That was my understanding of its origins, but it’s just pushing shoving in a crowd of hyperactive people. People were probably moshing at live shows before punk became punk. It’s inevitable. Multiple discovery is the phrase that comes to mind. When multiple different people come up with the same invention, roughly around the same time, independently. It happens when the time is right for a perfect storm of progresss due to the state of knowledge, science, and technology at the time it was produced. It becomes more of an inevitable discovery waiting to be found rather than one person’s invention. It probably started like that. We just needed the right kind of music to come along and unlock that aggression, and moshing is the result.
Man, that got pretty long. Sorry about that, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. ✌️

Of course you push yourselves around inside a pit, but you're not delivering hits, difference to be made here. Maybe it's time to educate some people about these "unwritten rules" and the real meaning of a pit.

As someone who makes their living mostly on stage I'd like to weigh in and say that personally I get very anxious if I see someone behaving in a way that might cause harm to others. Even if, say, someone very drunk tries to climb up on a friend's shoulders or an enthusiastic fan in the second row is putting too much pressure on a smaller person in front of them.
These kind of things definitely have a negative impact on my ability to focus and perform.

Even if "hardcore dancing" is a newer development, Hardcore has always attracted violent assholes.

Throwing blind punches and kicks is not a "shit happens" scenario.

      1. From your own post "pre-crowd killing days" so you admit it hasn't always been a thing.
      2. Youth crews fighting skins at shows isn't crowd killing. That's ongoing beef being settled and virtually never spilled over to unintended targets like crowd kills do.
      3. Breakdown 1988- not a single crowd kill in that entire video. Swinging your legs below waist level and swinging your arms generally downward is and has always been skanking/moshing. That's literally all there is in that video. Not even in the same world as crowd killing.
      4. Now it's clear you don't know what crowd killing even refers to.
      5. Denver and SLC " Big city" was a good laugh. I grew up in Chicago, went to HS for two years in Brooklyn and lived South of Downtown in Los Angeles for 5 years, ya know, actual big cities.
I'm sure you're better versed on skiing and random wild animal attacks though.
      6. When you're done fantasizing about, my frankly gorgeous, buns and cutting holes in the mouths of the band members of Atreyu on your posters, educate yourself.
You should know what the fuck is being talked about before talking shit. It's not about someone walking into an inadvertent elbow, which happens. It's dickheads squaring people up and throwing snap kicks/punches deliberately at unsuspecting people's heads.

If someone got knocked down and someone stomped on someone I promply laid that person out and threw them out of any pit I was involved in and made sure that person was back up and ok. We moshers did not take kindly to anyone back in those days that were trying to hurt people on purpose! I'll be 48 next month and now-a-days I avoid any of that crap and when I'm mixing a live show at my venue, and anyone starts that crap they get thrown out. Liability these days is insane, and I'll not let anyone ruin a show I'm mixing because they think it's ok to flail around like a rabid animal, not on my watch!
I don't even know why moshing went from what it was, to this 'crowd-killing' it's called today. Mosh pits got pretty rough in my day, but we always made sure no one got seriously hurt. Bumps and bruises maybe even some minor cuts, but no one fucking died or had teeth knocked out or skulls fractured!

I go to hardcore shows and play in a hardcore band and I love the parts of the culture that make it crazy and reckless (stage diving and slam dancing, 2-step ect) and I still enjoy a good push pit at a metal or punk show, but the crowd killing thing is really getting out of hand especially in the newer waves of metal core.
I think it is totally possible to flail around to look cool (if that’s what you think looks cool and sometimes it does) without actually putting enough momentum behind your strikes to connect and hurt somebody. If been hit by plenty of people that look like they are going to hit hard and it’s all fun and in good sport.
But every show has 1-3 people that are targeting people or trying to hit their friends because they think everyone is cool with it and that can get pretty crazy.
My band played a set and a group of guys came over and told us how they really liked our show blah blah blah seemed like nice enough dudes and then when the next band started playing they were punching me in the back of the head on purpose.
These same people will say that pits have “safe zones” and THEN push the put out into the safe zones and beat up on people trying to stay out of it just the same.
It gets even weirder at small basement shows where iv had dudes kick me while I was flat backed against a concrete wall.
Everybody takes the hits because the scene is so fluid on egos and images that standing out against it or saying anything will make people not want to listen to your band but at the same time the SAME people that are doing the crowd killing make social media posts about being safe and inclusive and anti violence.
It is such a bullshit scenario but there’s nothing worse than the threat of losing the mosh entirely in the DIY scene because to an extent the culture does have to be preserved, if it were up to me everyone would be consciousness and self aware enough to understand the line between having fun and putting people in danger.
In the mean time I’ll just hit the pit for a pitiful 2 step and stay the hell back for the crowd kill bands.

I've been to a ton of extreme metal shows over the years (thrash, black, death etc), and have seen maybe a handful of legitimate accidents in mosh pits that resulted in people getting injured. Usually bloody lips or noses, but there was one show I recall where a guy slipped and fell in the pit and busted his head open. Thing is, that was a LEGITIMATE accident. People were moshing, some beer got spilled, he slipped and hit his head.
Moshing does come with risks, and I would imagine that the majority of people who participate understand and accept those risks. However the risk does seem to be rather minimal when it comes to traditional or "circle" mosh pits, and the percentage of the time (in my experience) where everyone comes out of it with nothing more than sweat stains and a couple bruises trends in the high 90%s.
That being said, when you're flailing your arms and legs around in the pit like an epileptic at a beginners Karate class, you increase the risk of injuring people by several orders of magnitude. Plus you look like an overfilled bag of douche.
In short, if you're gonna mosh, mosh respectfully. Which might require you to grow the fuck up.

yeah i've been in multiple pits through out the years and out of all of them I have only been punched one time.....it was a death core show and you guessed it, they were "hardcore dancing". Shit is honestly retarded, I don't mind death core as a genre but I will definitely re-think attending a death core show in the future. I've seen slam pits get violent, but that is still, like you said, minimal risk of injury... bloody lip at the most.

  • @KindOldRaven
    @KindOldRaven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don't get it. I've been to plenty of (melo-)death metal shows in my teens (in my 30s now) and there *always* were moshpits. They were a big deal. But almost never did anyone get hurt outside of perhaps a bruise or slipping over a beer-spilled floor. Almost everytime someone slipped or tripped or whatever, they were instantly hoisted back up and joined the fray again. It was energetic semi-rhythmic body-bumpercars basically with some pushing and shoving. The one time someone fell hard (think it was during a Cannibal Corpse show), everyone made space, helped the guy up and got him a beer. It was honestly just friendly stuff.
-- Then I went to some deathcore shows later on and that was the first time I noticed a girl behind me with blood on her face and a ripped earlobe and noticed people getting elbow'd in the face etc due to this ''hardcore dancing'' idiocy. I'm sorry, but if you want to go around swinging your elbows, fists, feet without even watching wtf you're doing; I'll elbow you before you elbow me if you come near me or my friends.

This massive dude with an even more massive beard just grabbed me by my collar and pulled me up and held onto me until he was sure I was okay and able to continue. Why do people not want their community of music genre/band to be known for their music and not that you could get sent to hospital or worse from one of their shows.

Denver metro area resident here, haven't attended a show in nearly a decade because of this bullshit. about 25 years ago when moshing and slam dancing started to catch fire again, a girl got trampled and died in a pit at a club that's long since been sued into non existence. shortly after that incident, bouncers went from "use your discretion for what's aggressive" to a zero tolerance towards any aggressive moshing/slam dancing. the signs went up all over. Some clubs started to allow it just to draw a crowd and cash grab. this sort of thing, unfortunately, happens frequently and yes the club will be liable for for her medical bills, and since it's essentially assault, the club will probably have their license revoked because the bouncers didn't step in and control the scene. congratulations "hardcore" denver fans, you're about to lose a venue for your music.

I've seen girls get knocked out and usually the guy who does the deed acts like the victim or overcompensates for doing something stupid. It takes the fun out of it. In my opinion it takes away from the bands that your there to see and makes it about the violent crowd to watch out for. Mosh pits are one thing but I personally think the karate shit is retarded and laughed when people 1st started it. I should remember the bands and the sound but some shows I only remember for dodging people who were throwing punches and disappearing into the frenzy.

Easily your most important video I've seen yet - kudos! I would only argue that someone who attends a "hardcore" show KNOWS that violence occurs regularly at them, so there is in fact some personal responsibility involved, especially on the main floor in front of the stage. Any rational thinking person should question why someone would attend an event known for such behavior (including cops, judges, lawyers, and juries). So please consider that in addition to the infinite wisdom presented in this vid.

I didn't plan on getting involved in this, but I've heard this way too much. Yes I agree hardcore dancing and crowd killing is fucking stupid. No argument from me there. What needs to be known is Janelle, every show I've seen her at, crowd kills herself. I've seen her grab a guy by the shirt and start laying down some fists. I do think that it's all stupid don't get me wrong, but in a sense she had it coming. It was only a matter of time for her ya know? I think that it was way too much and she at the minimum deserved an apology. Overall though, I've never seen her not crowd kill at a show. It's just never that bad nor should it ever be. I feel bad because those are going to be expensive bills, and by all means if you want to help I won't tell you not to or that you shouldn't, but she isn't completely innocent.

We were a post hardcore screamo punk band. The crowd seemed bored for the whole show. Then we went on and when it came to our first breakdown, I watched the eyes light up on everyone in the crowd and 95% of the venue started moshing like I’ve never seen before. It was glorious. The feeling from watching that just made us all play even better than usual and I started shredding on top of the breakdown even though it wasn’t even part of the song. I’ve never experienced something like they since.
