I love that the instructions are in writing and there isn't someone talking through the whole video. Sometimes that can be annoying. Loved watching this. Clear instructions and upbeat music. Styles of videos make a huge difference.

This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection th-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seems to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

I think I’m gonna have wheels with breaks put on mine, and make the overhang longer to utilize it as a eating table, and even a desk. I LOVE this.

I love this so much I'm going to cover the front with two barn doors on hinges. I think I'll use 2 of the 4-square IKEA cases so I have a larger center board for the barn doors to connect to. Thanks for the great video! Love your channel as I'm a newbie at building furniture.

I swear, you guys are “ THE BEST” source of really good ideas, PERIOD! You have given me ideas for bathroom vanities, deck furniture etc. and now this. I have the perfect spot in my home for a piece like this. This is going to be an Ikea weekend for me. Once finished, I would love to send you pictures, but I don’t do the Facebook or Instagram thing... Thank you, so much for all your hard work you put into you videos.

Thank you! I am looking to add a small storage area with a counter top in my kitchen. After perusing many store ads and online stores and not finding anything to fit the small space behind our backdoor, I just about gave up on my idea for this much needed extra storage and work space in our kitchen. I even spoke to the Lowes Design team about ordering a custom cabinet and counter top. After an estimate of $800.00 for a 36" W X 36" H X 10" D, I thought my dream of my little kitchen cubby, was over. But, after seeing this video.... I believe I can do this myself, for a lot less money! So, a really big "THANK YOU!" to you! I will send you a before and after pictures too!

I have plans to purchase this same IKEA unit. I'll place it near a large (floor to ceiling) window and fill it with plants and pretty colored glass (vases, sculptures, decorative prisms, etc.) I think it will look really nice with the sun shining through the glass and foliage.

This is a great piece. I'm building it at the moment. Its about a $150 build depending on what kind of wood you use. My only suggestion is use a 2" table top... looks better. I also went with a 6' table top to have 6 inches hang over on each end which helps with sitting on a stool.

You can also use IKEA kitchen cabinet foot instead of wood, the advantage is the adjustability.

Thanks for that. I am moving into a new rental with a relatively sparce kitchen and intend turning a very similar unit into a floating island with castors for maneuverability. I wont be using the baseboard so that I can get to the brakes on the castors.I didn't think I wanted to clad the one (back) side but after seeing your end result I most certainly will be. Takes a rather basic piece of inexpensive furniture to a whole new level.

    • @TheRehabLife

I built this exact island using this video and it came out perfect. The height is like a 1/4 inch below standard counter top height (for anyone who thinks it might be too short). I love the stained wood on the backside and top. It fits perfectly in my kitchen and is a lifesaver when it comes to storage. It's holding up well, water is no biggie, but we still use cutting boards on top of it (obviously). The Kallax shelf is sturdier than you think. We built the shelf alone, turned it on its side, and then I jumped (actually jumped) my 160 pound butt on it and wiggled around and it didn't budge. The decorative wood only made it sturdier. We opted to skip the trimming at the bottom and instead stained the 2x4 with the same stain we used for the top, still looks great. I agree the nails should have gone in the underside but with that length screws that wouldn't be possible. Also if your top pieces aren't perfectly straight (like ours) the two pieces on top may not be flush side by side and might collect debris (ours hasn't yet). Overall, very happy with this project. And equivalently sized island would have cost over $300 easily.

Brilliant, you've just given me what I needed to increase the height of the kallax, I'm making a kitchen island myself. I got a free piece of proper worktop so I'll be cutting it to size with a little overhang on all sides. I'm also going to put the wheels on too so I can move it into another room during a party or dinner. I'm excited to get this done, I love doing diy things or repurposing items. 😁 The screws you used to connect the base frame to the kallax, are they raised? It's just I'm going to put the kallax insert drawers in some of the squares and don't want the screws catching.

It would seem like food, drips from drinks would seep in to the seam of the too boards to us on your island top. So we would prefer one great big board or as tone countertop, granite or quartz. The area idea was cool though and we might do something along those lines in the sunroom where we need an island and a bar for seating. Thanks for the ideas! Clean and good job!
