      Was an early version and they animated it instead of using
      motion capture
      But They Did that shitty
      animations for launch
      and present the demo quickly

      No but seriously, I had the standalone version of ROE for Xbox and the Super Shotgun in that expansion is what the Shotgun in the base game should have been.

    I can kind of understand why they cut so much content, like Mars City being an actual city. Because at the time certain game consoles and PC's were too inferior to handle all the features shown in the demo.

      They could have showed a few prerendered panning shots in the intro or something, just for some establishment.
      The final game mostly feels like traversing through one long continuous facility, which would probably make more sense in reality, but also makes the 'world' of the game feel smaller.

      They never planned the game to be released on console, due to overwhelming response they did shrunk the game and released on Xbox later on

      Billy Causey might be , all i know is that the game was never scaled down due to its console release - they did not really cut content, what they shown was simply a show-off of what their engine was capable of doing - context wise it would have not made sense perhaps to have a city on mars since it was a research facility right ? How many people would have been living on mars that they actually made a city lol - it just sounds silly - plus the early gameplay footage was mostly shown to be game focused on exploration and horror and at times even stealth, these were later removed to adapt the game to what actually doom is - console port of game was handled by external developer and the game was cut and shrunken down to be able to run on console - so i dont think there was any reason for them to back-off unless you have any cite or source i can back up your claim

      I guess they didn't wanted the final product to work with an actual history and world around it, sure there is enough lore to keep things going but nothing far fetched from the original games, since in doom there was this trait in witch the whole game is pretty shoot them'till they die and probably the fans didn't want the whole thing to have a complex story all of a sudden.

      Damper Boi Well, if they wanted to make it look realistic, they really goofed.
      There were plenty of games in the early 2000’s with much better 3D animations. This was made in 03, which means games like Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia already came out.
      I suspect they just didn’t care too much about animation quality in their new engine, since it was only a proof of concept.

    This game's development began as far back as the year 2000. It's no-wonder than that the game still has a colorful-look leftover from the 90s. Despite the fact that it wasn't released until 2004.

      Virtuosic i have a model viewer for doom 3, i loaded the invul hunter md5 model and include two forms: the invul hunter itself and the shield form, this last is the same of the minute 3:30

      @Sergio Georgini There was a Hayden character planned for Doom 3, not exactly the same guy as 2016 but someone who shared the name Hayden, I think he made it to the Doom 3 novels, was a sort of General type character and a secondary antagonist if I remember it right.

      The Doom 3 Gen. Hayden character was actually a rather interesting idea;
      He was supposed to be set up to look like the main antagonist in the early game, with Dr. Betruger acting like a sinister henchman/conspirator to the General - then you'd kill the General and Betruger would then be revealed to have been the main antagonist all along.

    Note: the E3 alpha mensions the existance of Slugs for the shotgun, wich explains why the Super-Shotgun wasn't included at release, as well as a Ray gun at somepoint with "Ray Slugs" as it's ammo
    Other worthy gameplay found within the E3's Def files include :
    -Baron of hell (not coded or modeled)
    -Spectre (unfinished)
    -A Spider demon boss type, presumably the Spider Mastermind, as it's concept art was showned at the E3 2002.
    -an Evil Female scientist existed (nothing else known about her)
    -Cultist Leader existed ( nothing known about him)
    -Archvile ressurect Ability (Doom 3 was originaly gonna use Death animations for monsters instead of dissapearing corpses much like the original Half Life)
    -Chaingun Commando had fully programmed and working melee attack
    -Maggot was orginaly going to be stronger, and even got some cut melee and ranged attacks
    -Revenant leap attack
    -Pinky was going to be able to jump at some point.
    - Trite, Wraiths and Ticks aren't mentionned anywhere. They where most likely late additions.
    -Pistol, Machine gun and Chaingun Shares the same damage and ammo type, the major differences between eachothers are the Spread, Firing rate, and number of bullets per shots
    -Zsec have mentions of a reload function that was yet to be implemented (the retail games also has sounds for melee attacks)
    -Chaingun Commandos had theirs very own AI, instead of being a mear copypasted Machinegun Zsec.
    -Plasma gun had 30 clip instead of 50. A slower Firing rate but nearly triple the damage. Shares ammo with the BFG who used 25 cells per shot.
    -Soul Cube used 10 souls to charge.
    -Zombies had more realistic animations, walking and even running after you instead of being brain-dead shambling idiots like in the retail games. A cut feature who's program still remain in the retail game in a somewhat complete state called "Zombie Ressurection" allowed them to get up a certain amount of time after being killed. Every zombie type ennemi "including Zsec and Commandos" could be given a a number of ressurections wich could also be disabled. There also was a random ressurection parameter wich could be modified to your will's contempt.
    Surprisingly enough the Arachnotron isn't mentionned anywhere despite Id having made concept art for it.

    I've been playing this, it's awesome, the graphics don't even bother after you get into the story. Tons of jump scares and good guns, hidden loot, really glad it's on game pass!

    I barely remember that old demo footage. I do remember the pinkie demon bursting through the wall vent though, and the Spider Concept Art. Those two things are what sold me on DOOM3 back in the day.

    They really oughta reincorporate these elements into future Doom 3 re-release, if any, hoping for some big remastered collection down the road so Doom series is always playable on every console generation.

    The video doesn't mention the Invisible Pinky Demon. It was cut from the main game, but is still within the game, as a fan-made map (The Sigma Core) includes it.

    How did you get the "Specular" Pass for the Doom3 Alpha Build footage to actually render ? Am I assuming correctly from the lower frame rates and the 4:3 aspect ratio at a 16:9 resolution that you rendered that footage on older drivers for an older GPU ?
    Also generally a nice sum up of facts * *thumbs* *

      Nvm, I found a download link which game a 360MB-ish rar file. Whenever I try starting a new game, the game just quits without any error message whatsoever. I tried XP SP2 compatibility and running as admin, which made no difference. I use 64-bit Windows 10 btw.

      @Williez Zeilliw Didn't work. I also tired Win98 mode too, and had run as admin and disable fullscreen optimizations boxes checked when trying XP, 98 and 95 mode.

      @@cannedbeverage7687 I used to have a copy of the alpha back in 2003. Forget about the menus. They're not completely functional. Instead press CTRL+ALT+TILDE to bring down the console. Then type "map X" where X is the name of the map you want to load. I don't recall their names off hand but you can just press tab to autocomplete.

    So awesome how they use some of the content in doom 2016 and doom eternal like 3:08 looking similar to the doom slayer hunter as well as 3:28 looking like the hell guards from doom 2016. Just something amazing to see some ideas are not forgotten.

    Doom 3 needs a proper remake since the BFG remaster is a little too bright, and you can partially see through the wall if you look up while backed against a wall. Also they could use content that didn't make it into the original doom 3

    In the PC version, going to options and controls you can assign a ZOOM button to aim enemies at long distance. Only in the original Doom 3 & resurrection of evil, not in the BFG edition :(

    Admittedly I do kinda dislike how Mars City in alpha version of the game.
    Although we only see it briefly that one shot of the cityscape looked more like an actual metropolitan center than Mars City does in the entire released game. In the final game best we can see Mars City is just a giant military/research facility with nothing traditionally entailing the second portion of it's name.
    I guess maybe that was the point since canonically the entire area was actually a private place owned by the UAC with everyone living there being employed under them in one way or another so maybe they retconned the place being an actual established township in favor of the big workplace since it wouldn't make since it wouldn't have worked but whatever it's still cool aesthetically and that's all that matters.

    Honestly the gameplay of the e3 demo seems to be a lot more refined compared to the final build and feels a lot more like a mix between classic Doom and the original Half life here, a game wich was obiously used as inspiration for theses early level designs alone.
    There's unfortunalty a astronomical quantity of content that was either never implemented or removed from the game: death animation for characters and pain states just like the classic title, alternate skins for ennemies when gibbed, cut ennemies such as the spectre or Barons, the later originaly having theirs very own little side story when four of them would, according to partially unused storyboards, split the soul cube (who originaly needed 10 souls to charge by the way) into four pieces, forcing us to hunt each of thel down to obtain them and fix it. (The Guardian seems to be a later addition)
    The weapons where also heavily reworked for the final build, with some confirmed weapons and mechanics that where never finished or removed:
    -For instance, the files of the E3 mention the existence of a railgun, as well as trowable flares. A shoulder mounted flashlight (with seemingly no limited battery yet a smaller light radius that in the bfg edition) was also removed.
    A faster firing shotgun with a slower reload and a max chamber of 5 shells as seen in the demo, wich was also going to have slugs, wich can explain the absence of the Super-Shotgun in the main campaign.
    The pistol, machine gun and chaingun used to share the same ammo type, the main differences between them being the clip size, firing rate and bullet spread, wich the machine gun's used to be bigger mind you, making her a more close combat oriented weapon. They would dealed a base damage of five (the healf and damage values differe drasticly from the retail game: an imp has 130 hp in the finished product, while he had 40 hp in the alpha, his leap attack also used to deal 25 dmg, wich could kill a zombie instantly, speaking of wich, monster infiting was an actual thing wich was removed.
    You see, there seem to have been some major ai regression as developpement went on: chaingun commando's unique ai was completely removed, instead being a machinegun zsec reskin..... speaking of wich the game's files mention the existence of melee attacks and a reload system for all Zsecs, a range attack for the maggot, who was originaly going to act for as a hybrid of the Imp and the Pinky. Pinky apparently had a cut leap attack, while the Wraith's files mentionned it being able to jump.
    The Imp is a special case, in the final game there's two variants, one that always walk, and one that always crawl, but as seen in the e3, they used to be one and only monster, casualy switching between walking and crawling, wich maked it less predictable and more aggressive.
    The zombies are a bit tricky, the fat zombie was already present in the e3 and wasn't changed much aside from a cut melee attack where he "grabs you" with both hands. The other one is called "Monster-zombie-maint" and still exist within the game's file and is fully fonctionnal, albeit the "Zombie ressurection" feature wich allowed zombies to get back up, seem to have been partially removed (there's still remnants of it the script files for shares monster ai, but I don't know if anything can be done with it. Back when it was still a thing, you could choose how many times a zombie could get up, how many health he gains when doing so, there was even a random parameter where you could give zombies a percentage of getting up after "death". It was usually put at 25.
    One last thing, this ability also concerned the zsec and commandos, and while this feature wasn't fully supported for the commandos (it was disabled for them in the def file and no proper "get up" animations where made for them (as far as I know), code suggest that they might have considered the zsec to use this ability in game somehow, would have made it so unfair!

    Y'know i wouldn't mind doom taking another dip into horror as like a small spin off game of like the demon invasion from earths earth's perspective, and you slowly throught the game see the effects of doomguy and gather more and more weapons to the point youre almost as strong as the doomguy but y'know eventually get killed just to show how dangerous what doom guy does actually is (or become another form of the doomguy that the actual doomguy has the face off against)

    While doom is not supossed to be horror, I do miss the horror touch the original had in maps like hunted , I mean imagine how satisfying it would be to do glory kills on the demons of Doom 3, or having a demon do a jumpscare just before you hand their ass to them

    I've seen gameplay from very early versions that looked more like classic Doom than Doom 3 did. Doom 3 felt like Quake with Doom -like monsters.

    I still like the ambiance, environments of that game, I know for many that game was not doom and well I found it kind of easy but I had fun to explore the different installation and they was kind of credible. The recent game have more details and all but I don't have the same feeling. ^^;

    So ID planned to have the Spider Mastermind and Arachnotrons. So what do they do with them? Cut them and replace them with the Trite, an unneeded bastard, the Tick, the same thing as a Trite but retooled to be even stupider, and the Vagary, a pathetic replacement of the Spider Mastermind with breasts that were never needed to make the Spider Mastermind attractive.

    It's a shame that Doom 3's tech was more or less ready in 2001, but IMO, the old-era artists and animators held it back. They should have hired film artists and mo-capped all the humanoids, instead of making the old artist learning and making half-arsed art for 3 years that followed.

    I remember when D3 demo came out it was sold along with all the other pirated games when I was a kid, and with like a 20% premium on the price! Barely anyone's computer could run it, I remember getting like 5FPS if that on my Pentium III... The graphics were so good and the game was so scary it completely blew my mind....
