Subtitles is not a problem for me. I'm Swedish, so I basically learned English by watching Dallas and reading the subtitles. If you want subtitle chaos, go see the Russian movie The Cuckoo. I think the movie is Russian, it might be Finnish. It is basically about a Russian soldier, and a Finnish soldier, both outcasts from their own, both ending up with a Sami woman in a little camp by a lake out in the wilderness up north, late in World War 2. None of them understand each other, language barriers. But they somehow manage to communicate. But with hilarious misunderstandings. There is one version of the film where everything is dubbed into Russian, which kind of destroys the entire premise. The good version is the one where the Finn speaks Finnish, the Sami speaks Sami, and so on.

    • @formatique_arschloch

      It's a russian movie.

I love this film, I am so glad you watched this, it is one of my favourite movies. I agree that the thing about Driss is that he treated Phillipe the way he would treat any other person not in a wheelchair. As for your question, I am an english speaking Canadian and I love movies and tv in the original languages - I have watched in Japanese, Korean, German, French, Russian, Polish, Swedish, Norwegian and more - you just get more of the nuance of the actors that you don't get from dubbed films. And honestly after are a few minutes you don't even realize you're reading the dialogue, you are just watching the movie. I feel bad for people who won't watch movies with sub-titles - they are missing so many great films.

The first time I watched this movie it also caught me off guard. Knew nothing going in and was very pleasantly surprised through out. People come in to and move out of lives all the time and each one effects us on some level and we never know how profound that effect might be. You don't have to change people to have them as friends or share experiences with them, just try to be accepting of them. So, from your point of view, if the action isn’t in France, it’s not a French movie? With this logic, Gladiator, Kingdom of heaven aren’t American movies because they are not in America?
So what is the criteria to have a French movie? If you place Astérix in Egypt it will not be a French movie anymore and it will become an Egyptian movie?
Sorry to say it, but from my point of view, it’s really a stupid statement to say, the action isn’t in France so it’s not a French movie.

@@user-xx6vy9ri8p Sorry, but the language is not the requirement to the origine of a movie. In the movie industry, the only factor required is the production. If it’s a French production, then it’s a French movie, no matter who is the director or actors or the language of the movie.

This is a beautiful story! I'm glad you chose to watch the original, as the American remake is not as good (it rarely is).
Other great French films to watch:
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2020)
    Oxygen (2021)
The Little Prince (2015) - based on a very famous French book by the same name

Not sure why Americans always make remake other countries hit movies.. is it lack of own ideas or thinking that Americans are too dumb to either read subtitles or just dub the movie…the original is always best. My brothers tell me that they rarely play any French movies in the US..

What a wonderful movie! I have watched this movie numerous times dubbed in German, but the English subtitles are okay as well. I have tried to learn French decades (yes, I am old ;-) ) ago, but it didn't work out - so I stay with German and English. Anyways, I like the relationship between the two main characters as well - that's what friendship is!
Biss, have a nice day, week, month!

Just to let you know, the paragliding scene is not there by chance, actually the real Philippe (Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, who was a noble in France and a businessman (champagne Pomery)) became quadriplegic following a paraglinding accident.

i'm so glad a french movie is making a name out of France/... (especially not one of those classical boring french drama), even if it doesn't always translate the best, they did a good job, the original voices are amazing, reading subtitles is just a "habit" to take but i understand not everyone liking it, i criticized GTA too much for making me read the plot and drive at the same time x)

UK/ Scottish here. I never used to watch anything with subtitles until I saw Jackie Chan’s Police Story in my late teens - it was my first time watching a JC film and I had been told it was the action that was important not the dialogue, but I found myself laughing at the jokes and really enjoyed it. It opened my eyes to watching foreign films with subtitles. I loved the Intouchables but haven’t got round to watching the American remake in English yet (with Brian Cranston), as I can’t imagine it would be anywhere near as good.
Another interesting film you might enjoy - The Way (Martin Sheen)

In my opinion French cinema has always been on the peak of filmmaking.
It's actually extremely unlikely to pick a bad French movie.
Unfortunately my French isn't good enough to understand everything and as I'm easily distracted by subtitles. So I usualy watch them in German (Yes, I know, it's a shame! 😁).
