After hearing that supposed "Hammond sound" emulated on an endless array of today's keyboards, I'm just thrilled to finally get to hear the _real_ thing. And to then have it presented by someone who clearly knows how to use it really, really well - that's just the icing on the cake!
Looks like Jimmy is playing on a A100 series. I have an A105 and matching Leslie 251 here in my office. Try as I may, I can't make it sound like Jimmy Smith :) Maybe another 20 years of 8 hour a day practice might get me closer.

I have my own mini concert every morning and all of my neighbors know when I am working out. I get lost in the music and before I know I am finished. Jimmy Smith's is one great artist to get a good work out to.
So many of us took our inspiration from him and the thrilling direction in which he took the Hammond. Thanks SO much for this great video. To feel close to the players is so good.

I saw him play only once I went with my dad to Blues Alley in Washington,DC where I think Nathan was living at the time..He was in duo with pianist Marc Cohen..he then moved to Florida where he became very active in promoting Jazz in his city,Orlando I think ..He brought Dizzy's band down there to perform in a local club
Ed, I knew Nathen from our days in DC and played with him more than once. One of my favorite guitarists--the Wayne Shorter of the guitar. We were friends until he died of cancer in 2003. I heard him and Marc Copland (né Cohen) one night at the One Step Down in DC. They did a 20-minute version of "Body and Soul" that I remember vividly to this day.

The first tune is Ode to Billie Joe which turns up a year later on the Groove Drops album. It's easy to see where the ideas originate. A lot of reviews panned the Groove Drops album at the time, but it's actually one of my favorites because while it's not as innovative, the session establishes nice grooves on various tracks where the band really sizzles. Too much emphasis can be placed on innovation and Jimmy achieved so much during these years his critical bar got pushed ridiculously high. Groove Drops is still a very solid album though not quite as spectacular as some others.
I gotta say if it weren't for my love of the beastie boys, I would've probably had some very boring musical tastes, you hear something that you like then you investigate and end up discovering all kinds of great stuff, one day you're trying to learn how to play slide guitar and the next thing you know you're listening beefheart trout mask replica, I love music and art, and I love Jimmy Smith, if you can't dig this we're just living different lives
Smith was so good, he played the heads (on ballads) with his LEFT hand on the upper keyboard; chorded on the lower keyboard and played bass pedals...NOBODY else did that!
I don’t think so, Jimmy McGriff, Dr Lonnie Smith, Jack McDuff, Will Bill Davis……, they all legends in mastering of the Hammond organ and have they own playing style, don´t forget the many great Hammond Gospel player too. But Jimmy Smith was the one who causes the Hammond organ to become now in the jazz scene.

It seems like he plays melodies on his left hand when he is playing ballads since it's slow enough that he can play bass on the feet, and since he would always be playing chords on his right hand it would probably feel more natural to keep doing so.
I think Nathan Page plays his ass off. He's the generation after McFadden. Check out Jimmy Smith The Boss because he plays on some of the tracks. George Benson is on the other ones.
I've seen a couple of gigs where Eddie looked like a rabbit in the headlights. He was still good but this guy is comping sweeter than Eddie did on the ones I heard. Fair play
Great stuff but did anyone notice that from 2.23 to 2.44 the image is reversed. Jimmy wears his ring on the left hand and it has magically jumped to the right. Look at 4.59 and 6.10 and you will see what I mean.

Actually he's not playing the lines with his feet! He is playing them with his left hand which is still always impressive.
Regular playing = left hand bass lines with 1 or 2 note foot thump. Ballads = foot bass lines with both hands occupied playing melody and harmony.
Got to see Nathen at a jazz fest in Casselberry (Orlando suburb) before he passed. Still had that grey sunburst Guild! Sounded like burnished gold.

Some say Nathan influenced Jimmy's playing, after they recorded together. Nathan died pretty young. I just learned about him mysellf.
