  • #269: A common issue after knee surgery is quad weakness that may result in a knee extension lag. This can have many consequences for future strength gains and gait training, so it's always best to address this quickly.
Here are some strategies we use at Champion when someone has a knee extension lag.

I'm 2 months post-op (Patella Tendon Repair), only been in PT for a month. I have a lag but also had a Femoral Nerve Block done just before surgery.
This information was extremely helpful. Thank you all!

Right after surgery my surgeon instructed me to do a leg raise. It was tough but i was able to do it twice but now I’m on day 12 after surgery & I still can’t do a leg raise smh.

What’s your thoughts on Eccentric strengthening? PROM to end rang with active assistants through the eccentric portion.

We use eccentrics a lot for various things. This would likely be too difficult with someone with an extension lag, though. They tend to have even poor concentric strength.

One year after tkr and therapy I still have that 45deg lag and knee still buckles walking around with a cane and have fallen a few time due to that buckling

When do you feel the buckling occurs most? Walking on flat surfaces or downhill?
