I really like the direction where this is going, if you might do videos featuring your production process and your analog gear! I also really loved the "room tour" through your studio rooms. Really helped to get an insight into how a professional mix engineer works!
Also HOLY SHIT you have 40 different clients at one time?? I would love to learn, how long these contracts generally last for (meaning what is the usual time span between receiving the files and final send out of the finished work.)
I also would like to hear more about how your assistant is helping you in your process.
A lot of requests right here, i know, but this are just some questions that came to mind. :)
I totally agree with the small-bundle approach. I just rebuilt my production system on an M1, and had to reinstall so much shit. It seems that I never get to drill down on the plugins that I do have. I am going small this year and it is great to see a pro taking this approach. It seems like your plugin portfolio is even smaller than it was the last time you made a video like this!
I follow you quite some time now and I like your reviews of new plugins. I think its the "natural" vibe that came from your videos that keept me watching them in the past... But the more I watch, the more professional you appear. In the beginning I watched it and it was like "yeah... Some plugs are a matter of taste..." but when time went in and especially with this episode... I saw you use 90% of the plugs that I use too... Inclusive analysers. So the more I watch... The more you manage to gain my recognition! And I consider myself a pro producer myself, producing tracks for 25 years as a main job.
So please keep on doing what you do... I like it 😁👍
Noise cancelling trick: random noise adds up with 1/(sqrt(n)) while signals are adding up with 1/n. So if you run somethin multiple times through the tapemachine and add and align the recordings perfectly together the snr goes up!:-)
This reminds me of how humbuckers work and I love it ❤️

@@666dreamboat wow i didnt knew this, so multiple coils are added together so that their noise cancels out? this concept should be applied to tape machines by using multiple heads!
On the sibilance problem, I think I may have an answer. Most people like to record vocals up close because the proximity effect enhances that big sound. Well, this not only enhances the low end, but also accentuates the sibilance. When your singer backs off the mic (about 25 cm or so), AND ALSO when you lift the mic above the mouth and point it at an angle toward the mouth so the the diaphragm is not in direct fire of the mouth, it really calms sibilance and everything sounds more natural. You remember all the old photos of the classic singers of the 30’s? They were often way off the mic. Well this is why. They didn’t have de-essers, but they knew how to use a mic.
I like the idea of raising the mic! I think close micing is still good to get a nice warm sound but I never heard of changing the angle before. I believe producers were much better with acoustics in general. These days we think too much about solutions in the box. Back in the 30s, 40s there was no box!
Please show us how you run the business and use notion etc! Sometimes the hardest part of the job is knowing how to stay organised, everyone would get so much value out of seeing how you keep all your projects managed!
That freeform phase plugin is actually insane.
Those t5 SSDs are fantastic. Cheap, reliable, and always available. I use them to back up reaper sessions as well as to record every live show that I mix. Providing a multitrack is a great little bonus for my live sound clients, and all it takes is plugging the drive into the console and sorting out a few settings. It also opens the door for them to hire me to mix and master said multitrack, which is a great way to upsell my services in a very genuine and transparent way.
the free Melda package is amazing for what you get and the quality of the plugins. I regularly find, when looking at something new, I already have something more than suitable in that package. Nice to see your use of it and comments. Thanks for another great vid

VERY interesting! Indeed, I would love* a video on your business, management, workflow etc. Boring stuff for some, but for small business owner geeks like me, details like how and when to answer emails, templates, project management, assistants, delegation of tasks, time-saving tips and techniques would be amazing!

Pro-DS is still my favorite de-esser after all these years. It just works so damn well! I de-ess with Melodyne as well, but since I usually tune the vocals first (in Melodyne standalone mode) and then apply processing, some of the esses might be boosted again and Pro-DS is my go-to for catching these stray ones.
I don't think anything compares to DS, most De-Essers are simply compressors for a specific frequency range but DS detects actual sibilance. I do wish there was a setting for it to detect 'SHHH' sibilants though

Being a IT advisor and music enthousiast myself I'd love to see how you manage the workflow both of actual mixing proces as well as all the secondary processes like communications,. filesharing ect. I have the feeling you'll some very creative yet pragmatic solutions : )

A lot of sibilance is picked up (and enhanced) by using 'cheap' condenser mics...and by 'cheap' I mean under $1,500. Most mics sold today are these overly-bright condensers and that's why you'd tend to hear it coming from outside sources.
Absolutely correct, and probably due to lack of a good external pre-amp (which are unbelievably expensive). I'm using a TLM-103 with an Audient ID22 and there's definitely a ton of harshness I always have to deal with in post. Can't wait to eventually get a good external pre and maybe a vintage U87

Interesting insight into the tools you are using! Myself I mostly came to similar plugin choices while trying to reduce my collection as far as possible. At the moment it sits at about 100 plugins, that includes all effects and virtual instruments. Most likely this can be reduced further since even after long consideration and comparing different plugins some are not getting touched. A studio tour or workflow video would also be super interesting to see!

I started to only use Reaper plugins on my "In the rehearsal room" laptop and when I transfer those sessions to my main computer I realise that I don't need much more.
I must say I cheat by using Valhalla reverbs, but that is a company that actually lets you install shit if you bought it without stupid DRM.
Idea for a next video: DRM-less plugins!

A tip I learned to avoid using a de-esser is to manually draw in automation on all sibilances about -4 to -8db. Yes its more time consuming but the results are much better.

Would very much appreciate a rundown of the productivity tools you’re using. I typically have a ballpark of 10 students and 5 clients that I’m mixing/mastering for here, and there are already many late nights, plus some weeks where it feels like my to-do list is gonna get me. Send help!
I use all of these except for the Melda phase correction. A few plugins that I frequently use that you didn't mention: Kjaerhus Audio's Chorus (I love using it on the low mids of a bass track), iZotope Imager (mostly for narrowing the low end, checking correlation, and being able to quickly switch between mono and stereo), Decapitator for saturation, and Youlean loudness analyzer (instead of the one you use), and Voxengo Span spectral analyzer. That's pretty much it I think..

Console 7 is pretty unreal. That, and ToTape have made recording actually fun (like back in the day doing reel to reel). Hope Split eq gets more efficient (it’s a heavy CPU hit).
SplitEQ's GUI seems a bit of a hog. The audio processing isn't too bad considering what it's doing. I generally don't use the interface once I'm nearing the end of DSP capacity.
I got waves nls, which on a larger project is too much of a cpu hog for me and gets a bit much to manage. Would you say Console 7 is a similar sort of approach worth checking out as an option?

I don’t know about NLS. But Console 7 is not an analog emulation as far as I know (like so many other plugs). Console appears to code and decode (between the channels and destination buss), which somehow counteracts the digital crappyness that happens with a standard DAWs summing process. It’s like it removes that weird fizzy quality that a DAWs summing has.
@@JedShura Yep, it's to help create the sound a large console summing many tracks together creates. Digital/ITB consoles can't do that so the Console suite of Chris's plugins try and do a similar tjing digitally with endcode and decode pairs. I think it's not worth using until you've got a dozen tracks though. There's a new one called Console7Crunch which is pretty cool too especially on lower track counts. The problem with Airwindows is there's too much choice 😄

Hi Wytse! I recommend you checking out MAAT RSPhaseShifter. It is a very high quality phase manipulation plugin. It's not cheap and the UI is not the best, but it sounds great. Don't forget to read manual or may be play with plugin doctor to better understand the phase manipulation curves this plugin produce. May be you will like it and it will replace the whole melda bundle for you, because as you said you mostly using the phase manipulation plugin from it.

Intergrates outboard gear with Pipeline xt. It has ddp and all the mastering requirements in the project section. It even has useable meters built in.

i had an ssl six in my chain before going into a lyra 2 and since I removed the ssl six from my chain my vocals have been far less sibilant. I think in this case, the pre amp from the ssl over processed what is already one of the cleanest preamps ever

I have noticed the same issues with sibilance. I think it's poor mic placement and singing technique from people recording at home. Just my oponion! You are not alone tho hahaha.
Wavelab is easy if you are a Cubase or Nuendo user (like me), think it would be a bit of a learning curve if you are used to another DAW workflow.

There's some sibilance in your saying of sibilance. I'm very sensitive with sibilance - I've noted that most vocalists sing directly into the mic and don't have the technique to turn or back off. Airwindows stuff is often fabulous BUT sometimes OTT or too subtle to hear without pushing extremes.

Im using a deeser a lot lately to, i thought that was my speakers...but that's not possible cos i own studio speakers Fostex PM1 and different headphones... Sennheiser hd600, Sennheiser jubilee HD58X, Sony noise canceling bluetooth WH1000XM4, ATHM50X, T50RP semi-closed version...and i don't know what it is either...more sensible to sybilants with age? maybe?

You kinda think like a software developer. Very smart. Keep the production system clean. Working versus playing in a sandbox are two different concepts.
Hi Wytse. Thank you for your videos. I too am a big fan of the AW Console system. I was just curious on where you place it in REAPER. From what I've read, you don't want to mess with the volume fader on the track you have the console plugin on. What I do (in Reaper) is route each track through another track that just has the console plugin on it with the gain set at unity. So if the song has 25 tracks, I'll have 50 tracks altogether. Then I hide the 25 "console" tracks. Is this too much work? Is there an easier way? Thanks!
