    Just a heads up. There is no saturation added to the Kirchhoff EQ. It's just the curves from the vintage eqs that they emulated. There is no saturation in the plugin except for what would be caused by the dynamic eq.

    great video and thanks for sharing your perspective. after lots of research I went with the Kircchoff a couple months ago, and to your point there was a learning curve. However, wow, do I love that EQ. FF has the best UX, so if FF did an upgrade and closed the gap I'd likely switch to Pro-Q4. Regardless the Kirchhoff is amazing for surgery - the dynamic upward and downward (expansion vs. compression) capabilities on the same band are awesome (bit hard to sort at first, but awesome in the end - not sure if Q3 has that)

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No you cant do upward and downward with 1 eq band at the same , you need to split it between two.

      fabfilter understands very well the competition that challenge their superb products, especially when it's (Q3) one of the finest and most popular digital EQ's ever created. You can surely bet Kirchhoff is in their crosshairs and when they introduce Q4, it will not only address everything Kirchhoff has challenged (and good for them to do so!) but will make catching up again very, very difficult. It is bound to happen soon, as Kirchhoff has made big news and created loss profits for fabfilter by their existence and acclaimed exposure. That said, things are quiet at fabfilter for now, but this is because (in my estimation), they are smart. When Q4 comes out it will not be rushed. When you're the finest you must ensure absolute perfection when you launch the next state-of-the-art product. Others are watching and technology moves quickly so it must be done perfect out of the gate. fabfilter has pretty good odds of meeting this challenge. An exciting anticipation indeed ;-)

    • @patrickalphenaar
      @patrickalphenaar ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@whitenoisestudio yea it does. Ofcourse there is a difference in phasing/shifts between linear and natural but in general i hear phasing “rotation shifts” in nearly all EQ’s. Only Kirchoff in 117bit and x2 reduces that by a lot! It seems a very little hole in my left eardrum causes me being overly sensitive as stated by the doctor who said my Hearing capability is higher as normal (with hearing test’s) which probably makes me so extremely sensitive to phasing and rotation/Shifts. But trust me i dont like it when working with audio! Wish I didn’t had that awful sensitivity😢 so i could focus on making music instead of trying to fix everything……… So thats why Kirchoff is way cleaner to my ears as a lot of people even wont hear that clean clarity and preferably should not hear it either. I have a quesiton about the noisefloor one. I may be wrong on it, just let me know. If every one of a pro q3 has -175 db noise, does that mean two pro q 3 will boost that noise to -169( 6db louder) Then in a large mix when we have over 40-60 audio tracks, do we time that with 20 30 as the factor? That maens we end up with audible noise in our mix?

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to boost unhealthy amounts for it ever to be become a problem. 24bit equals 144dB of headroom and you will never play at that volume. Before that noise floor become a problem, any other noise in your mix from plugins or simply recording will be hearable first.

    • @fvcvbvcbccbc2803
      @fvcvbvcbccbc2803 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whitenoisestudio But theoretically, I think it depends on where you put the eq at. If it is the very first plugin you put in a raw signal such as a recorded piano or guitar, that noise floor might be affect by those other saturation and compressor in the future. Especially in genre like edm, people use significant saturation to do sound design. In those circumstances, I think the cleaner the better.
      BTW, Kirchoff eq still has one more shortage that is the automation part. At least in Logic, when you automate the plugin, you don't see a damn number on the automation curve. So you have to open the plugin to match the reduction and boost. That is stupid as hell. Lots of times, I ended up by copying all of the eq setting by hand to pro q3 to just do a automation.

    Let me give you some Info from the test I did with this plugin. I selected an EQ point and applied to be a SIDE Bell. When I select only this part (to solo it to monitor only this side node) to check inside Voxengo SPAN PLUS, I noticed something I did not like at all. First, the sound gets MONO by soloing it, it is not suppose to sound MONO because, the part of the EQ I want to listen is a SIDE node and must sound only at the sides, with a wide phase issue, Voxengo shows me a green plasma wave indicating all is OK without showing me any red information telling me that the sound is gone to the sides and a warning for me to let me know, that there is strong a phase issue! I say this because I know Voxengo very good and I know how it works with any other EQ like Stage Digital Inf or Fab EQ3, by saying this I felt really very disappointing that this EQ does not work as it is suppose to behave, it outputs a wrong information easily captured by Voxengo, maybe I have done something wrong inside Kirsch but, I don´t think so, I have a playback from different tracks in Stereo and Voxengo must tell me all concerning about any change I do in any EQ plugin and the INFO I get from Kirsch is really very wrong and made me feel about this plugin not to use it at all, I don´t think this EQ is useful based on what I said! For those who know the importance to use Voxengo in the master output (to check the MONO compatibility of a mix and the side energy inside a song) will understand what I tried to explain here with my post! Let me know if I did something wrong and correct me if it is the case, greetings from Germany and as always, great videos you produce! • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sides will usually solo as a mono signal, or as a very weird out of phase type of signal. Some developers choose for a mono sound, others don't.
      I prefer mono, because with the out of phase sound is hard to judge if your adjustments sound right. But normally i never solo mid side and listen in total.
      Sides solo-ing is weird because the sides cannot really sound right without the mid signal component because of physics.
      The sides component of a mid side signal is derived from the phase difference between left and right channel in a particular way:
      M = L+R
      S = L-R
      Now the + and - refer to phase , where the - is flipped phase.

    It blows my mind how many producers and sound engineers get super excited by any and every plugin! Missing the point completely. This plugin is vast with a variety of options to control the frequencies...but you could do that any way. Using this plugin just means you have more steps to do with it when you can achieve each aspect individually and pay attention to each stage separately to this plugin. ProQ3 still is perfect and helps me tame an individual component of a track and find a pocket for it, coupled with an SSL EQ to allow me to fit the component in the track and provide some colour to the track. Coupled with some compression+limiting etc...guys this is stuff you have already, so please don't fall for this 'this plugin is a game changer' marketing tactic. Peace!

      Hoi Jos!
      Nah, its not ignored. Well it is, but 99,9% of all eq's are since this video is about pro-q3 vs kirchhoff.
      I like the simplicity of the pro-q3 dyamic eq actually. It just works.

      @TazzSmk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@whitenoisestudio it's perhaps bit non-intuitive to understand, with parallel dynamic EQ like Nova, bands are processed simultaneously without affecting each other, which results in different sound results,

    Does Kirchoof Eq have the EQ match option?

  • @gianlucamarchese
    @gianlucamarchese ปีที่แล้ว +6

    In reality, Pro Q3 is still valuable compared to Kirchhoff (even though I went with the latter).
    For Kirchhoff to be the definitive digital EQ on the market, it still needs 3 major functions:
    - Static Match EQ (like Pro Q3) and Dynamic Match EQ (like TDR Nova GE);
    - Frequency visualization of conflicting areas between 2 or more signals (like Pro Q3);
    - Static and Dynamic processing of Transient and Tonal frequency content (like Eventide Split EQ).
    If those 3 major functions will be implemented in Kirchhoff 2.0, it's game over.

    • @whitenoisestudio

    Fabfilter bias is pretty blatant here. Splitting all kinds of hairs, grasping at all kinds of straws to justify not acknowledging the Kirchoff has it beaten hands down. Agree that the noisefloor is irrelevant, but all the other issues mentioned here really are edge cases that don't affect me or the vast majority of users. The only thing I wish Kirchoff had is support for eq graph on the track view in Pro Tools, but even then that's a pretty minor gripe. Also, I think the point about doing dynamics (I noted the workflow example was broadband) at a different stage is fairly inane - the vast majority of EQ I do is at the problem-solving stage wherein the ability to focus that (spectral correction) dynamically is invaluable; polish is often the later job of saturation or other box-tone introducing plugins.

    To me this Kirchhoff is a gimmick and a gimmick. Emulations are only replicate curves of analog EQs, not something I’d want from digital EQ. 117 thing does not make any difference. Split linear phase is… do you really care about phase above x hz? Me not. But only 2x oversampling is an issue. And all this advanced compressor controls in EQ? I have MB compressor for it.
    I usually watch tons of music production videos on TH-cam instead of working 😂. However, I haven’t seen any one on TH-cam using this EQ yet. This tells a lot.
