- Mr Heater problems? Does your heater shut off? I’ve found that the big buddy fix is easy when you have low flame or no flame. If it keeps shutting off try this easy fix. When your buddy heater not working you freeze. Use the 20 lb propane tanks instead of 1 lb portable tanks. The 1 pound tanks on mr heater are not meant for extreme cold, only kinda cold. Sometimes they still work but reliability is an issue. Fix your mr heater buddy heater with no need for tools! Share and thumbs up the video

This needs to be top of the list for fixing these heaters
*Install was easy **fireplace.homes** good although I personally had some difficulty with the thermostat I had. Issue was mine though, not realizing that electric heaters couldn't use oil thermostats. Tip: If you are using an external thermostat, run the power to the thermostat, not the unit. Once that was squared away it worked great.*

Omg I bought the filter, the good hose cleaned everything watched 100 videos and still I could not get my little portable buddy to stay lit for more than four minutes. I almost gave up on getting my portable buddy to stay lit and then I found your video you are a life saver thank you!

It was 59°F and dropping fast in my RV; I had to put my electric quartz radiant heater under the skirts as my kitchen faucets stopped flowing. The hot goes out first but I've always caught it before the cold stopped but tonight is different. It hasn't been above freezing for four days; then, the next 3 days it hasn't been over 20°. Right now it's zero on it's way to -3°.
After sunrise and our whopping 9° high it will continue trending downward to a high of 4° and a low of -18°. The forecast is calling for a quick jump to 47° a week from now; until then it's going to be colder than a well-digging witch's T&A in a brass bra...
Luckily, I got ~6" of snow to insulate and fill in the gaps around the skirts and we don't have the 45mph winds we did last year when it didn't get this cold but was a nightmare logistically as I sat at my desk sipping coffee and watching skirt panels go sailing into oblivion (I also upgraded to 1" from the .5" I had to get last year because I waited until the last minute.
I'm running this directly off my RV tanks (yes I brought them inside, they just won't work at -20°) and my Dometic is on the fritz so no forced air. Shortly after sunset the water inlet - I put a Y on it and when I opened the part of the Y my ground water isn't attached to... Nothing. I took an Amazon box about half the size of a size 10.5 shoe box, after some judicious razor knifing I taped it over the Y and put a tea candle in it; 30 minutes later she's flowing. That's how the evening started before the kitchen faucets froze up (that was ~8pm, the faucets were frozen by midnight) but tea light has the bathroom nice and happy. That's when I put my main electric heater underneath and started getting cold inside and this little shit decided not to stay lit after switching from a 20# to my bigger RV tanks, OR when I switched back. My poor mini-dachshund hasn't gotten out from under the blanket for more than an hour or so all day and the kitten, who hasn't minded staying out all night even down to 20° (I made her a nice little insulated cubby in the stairwell with her favorite blanket and she seems extra content with her long-haired calico coat) is just going stir-crazy from being inside but not so crazy as to stay out more than 10-15 minutes tonight.
Is 40° going to kill us? Nope; but it sure is a lot nicer at... 68! That's up nearly 10° since I started this!

I have family out there that I want to go see and I sure could use a beer right now haha! I’m glad you’re up n running again! The way you described it I felt like I was right there suffering too with all the fur babies. Sometimes a few of those disposable hand warmers might help keep the tanks warm too if it comes down to it. When it’s this cold outside the gas always has trouble converting to gas no matter how big the tank is. Well, stay safe and stay warm and always have an extra tank ready to swap if you can. Cheers

The critical effort is to open the valve at tank slowly, two or three times, while the heater is fully OFF. This allows the rubber line to fully charge with pressure.

Hell yeah! I literally tried this right before i found your video. I relit mine, and had to run upstairs to use the bathroom, where I am currently, looking up issues with the heater lol, so hopefully when I go back downstairs it's lit! Great video to give me some reassurance that I'm not filling my garage with propane gas while I take a shit lol. Thanks bro!

The first time it happened I turned off everything, unscrewed the connection to the tank and reconnected, then it worked, thought maybe my connection was bad. I had the issue of just one side of my Big Buddy flickering. When I turned it on all the way, then both flickered. Your method worked just as explained. Purged the line and regulator and it now works perfectly! Can’t smoke cigars in sub-zero weather in my “cigar shanty” without heat! Thank you!!

I bought new and took back exchanged hose at store! worked in the parking lot but not at home till I found your video. Running reliable as long as OPEN TANK VALVE SLOWLY!!! I never would have thought of it ! Neither did the sales guy!! Thanks

Omgoodness thank you so much! I am from Florida moved to Michigan first time with a propane heater and I changed out the propane tank because I needed it filled bought it brand new turned it on and it was flickering like that I had no idea I am so glad I TH-cam searched and yours come up. Being a single woman and using propane heat for the first time from Florida to Michigan I was number one scared to death number two had no idea how to fix so again thank you you saved me!
Sweet! Just remember to either put it back in the box or bag it up when the cold season is gone (Michigan is usually August 7th through the 12th, lol) so the spider webs and dust don’t collect in the pilot hole.
You are the first person that explained what was happening to me. It also happens now and then with my gas grill. I get a good blue pilot flame, but when turning it to on, will not light and flame goes out. I knew to turn on the tank slowly, so try to be careful there. Over the last couple of weeks have refilled tank twice and worked with no problem. Today refilled the tank and it happened again. I didn’t know to turn the tank off, purge the line, then reopen the tank. So thank you for that info. While I was messing with it, went ahead and cleaned the orifice with alcohol.

I was having a similar issue pulling my hair out but the first half wouldn't even stay lit. I tried your trick and as soon as I lit the pilot I cranked it up to full blast and it worked perfectly! I felt like a jack wagon for not thinking of this and almost considering buying replacement parts but you saved me a bunch of time! Thanks a bunch brother!

My pilot would light and stay in until I turned the knob on low. It would die out almost instantly.
I bled the line. Turn the propane on very lightly and let the pilot burn for approx. 30 seconds. The pilot stayed lit when I SLOWLY opened the propane tank.

IT WORKED! THANK YOU! I only had this issue after switching to the full size lp tank so I thought I ruined my heater. I wish I watched this video before I exchanged my half full tank thinking it was a tank issue. Still I’m very happy it’s working again!

I had an issue where my pilot light would work fine. But whenever I moved it to Lo or any higher, it would emit a squeal and the flame would go out. Simply opening the valve slowly on the propane fixed my issue. Thank you for this simple video!
Thanks for posting this video. I had this heater at the top of my P.O.S. list of things I wasted good money on. I’ve only had it a couple of months. It was doing exactly like yours. I thought that maybe the 20 pound tanks fresh had more pressure than the regulators could handle because it was designed with the small tanks in mind and the regulators might be too sensitive for the pressure from the larger tanks. Never would’ve thought of just increasing the pressure slowly. Thanks again for sharing this information.

OK,,, I tried this trick. it worked like a charm. I thought I had a bad hose. the heater worked great when i used a 1 lbs can or even 2 of the 1 lbs cans. but when i use the hose with a 20lbs tank the heater would not work. I tried following your advice and it worked great. THANK you for the video.

@@cabinlife1886 maybe use words that indicate that the pilot light will light but the heater won’t start up. Most videos seem to be about the thermocouple being dead and the pilot going out when you release the knob.
I was unsuccessful using only your method until I blew compressed air into the tube also. That did the trick. Thanks for the video.

Now we have four Mr. Heaters, all the same model but with something slightly different about each one. We believe it's because we purchased each one years apart. As far as soaking a
Q-Tip with alcohol and shoving it into the pilot hole I say, "Don't Do It.". I washed a video of a woman cleaning up an old mascara brush, soaking it in alcohol and shoving it into the pilot hole I tried it. The mascara wond is stronger and the flexible bristles better catch hold of any dirt or fibers in there without leaving a wand of cotton stuck inside and clogging the line
I pulled out enough cotton to make two Q-tips with the clean mascara wand trick.
Now our five year old Mr. Heater works again but we have retired it for special occasions. The new one we bought yesterday is working properly now and hopefully we'll get five winters of heat from it as well🤗
As someone mentioned below, there's a mechanism in the valve to shut off the gas if it flows freely such as if the hose got cut. When you are charging a long hose or such, if you crank the valve open the safety kicks in. The fix is to close the valve, resetting the safety, crack the valve and let the pressure equalize across the valve for 15-30 secs before opening it more. I discovered this with a weed torch. Frustrated me all to hell till I learned of the safety.

Thanks for this video as this fixed the issue I was having while using the tank. I had already installed a filter prior to use with the tank. I was turning the tank valve wide open and was experiencing the flame out issue. Turning the tank valve VERY SLOWLY until I noticed the hose move ever so slightly and then stopped opening the valve. Problem solved and props to you for posting this up. You probably saved me the cost of a new heater.

I've always had this issue with (what I thought was) one of my heaters. When two of them had this problem, I went searching online for help. After the Qtip cleaning didn't work (wasn't even dirty) I kept searching...

Your probably not the first one in your family to be called Einstein or brilliant after 3 different hose's and 2 different filters , I'm pulling my grey hair out , I run across your simple video thank you sir for being of service to others. Thankfully came across this. I'm in my ice shanty hunting and it's 25° out. Ran great. Changed my 20lb tank, and it would run for about 10 minutes and die off. Tried this trick and it started right back up, and no issues. Would've been a very chilly night. Thank you

Dead-on accurate diagnosis. I hooked up a full, fresh tank for the first time and couldn't understand why the pilot light cut out when I tried moving to the heat position. I stopped opening the propane tank as soon as I heard the hiss and all is well.

It works, I had a new Mr. Heater with a bottle on it for a few days, then I decided to get a fresh five pound bottle and lo and behold pilot lit then immediately went out I was just about to return the Mr Heater portable it when looked on youtube for a solution and found your video, it took a little while before the regulator cleared, I followed your suggestion to slowly turn on the gas at the tank and it worked after a few tries. Well I looked at the other videos where they told you to put the Q tip and blow air down and it didn't work at all. Tried this and open the propane slowly and let it run for a minute and turned it up just a tiny bit and worked like a charm. I had just bought the buddy heater and new 5lB propane tank so I don't have to buy the 1lb tanks continuously. Thank you so much!!

p.s. I've had the heater just one week but have been shutting off the Tank at night and back on in the mornings and never had an issue till now. That's why I couldn't believe it was going to work.

You right on with this Change my 20 pound tank last night. It was exactly like the video fluttered sputtered that would go out. Hooked up my electric Heater was fairly comfortable at night. Watch your video did what you said worked like a charm. I added in filter I didn't put on before thanks working great.

a big buddy heater a few days old , set up mr heater hose, filter on propane tank , when switched tanks the issue showed up , your method worked and its working like it should .

Woah… Your a life saver!!! I’m sitting out rifle hunting in Wisconsin temp is in the teens and my heater kept shutting off after a minute or two…. I was really getting frustrated! Started messing with it with no luck. Then I saw your video! No I can focus on the 🦌! THANKS!!!
