It is a really entertaining chat between two tycoons of social science. Ariely successfully pushes Harari out of his comfort zone, trying to get new things of him, and some statements on his personal standpoint on religion. Entirely fair: given that Harari dedicated his second book to what seems to have been his meditation teacher, and he had just made a vegan statement at the beginning. It's good to see Harari dealing with both transcendental questions and some just as unsettling as "What is your favourite Joke?". Both guys are quite authentic, none of them easy going and show men. It's a blessing to have them around.

I live average life with average people earning average wage and pay average bills and somehow i am watching this extraordinary discussion. It is so refreshing. 2017 was three years ago. Mind blowing; one ability to speak in such a volume and depth and richness..i can not get enough. It is so complex. It is valuable but it wont save human race from self destruction

Yes Ariely was a bit mocking but if you heard his other talks he has this kind of humor and Harari took it as lightheartedly as it was meant I guess. I don't see your problem.

I was gonna say correction, One brilliant mind. Dan Ariely does useful serious research for humanity and has made many many excellent lectures on human interaction and patterns of the human mind, Harari pushes agendas, throws his religious and cultural biases around worse than american presidents, and write low-level dubious stories about humanity. How is that brilliant? I am yet to watch read or listen to anything from Harari that makes me go "Aha".

There are lot of comments bashing Dan Ariely although he is clearly not just an interviewer. Yuval Harari is a great teacher, I would argue maybe even better and more important than Ariely. But if I was to chose between them for a mentor it would always be Ariely. I think he made some nice challenges to Yuval Harari and also exposed him a bit in a new way. There is no question that Harari has many answers that are based on statistics and empiric from history but he is behaving like an robot in a way. It seems that is what Dan Ariely was trying to tell him especially with the last question about the "best joke". It looks like Harary was aware of that the moment he stoped speaking. It was like he was saying to him You are a great wise man and You brought us summaries about so much regarding inteligence, consciousness , life , meaning and everything else and yet still it seems that You haven't really experienced it, being a human... There is an other interview in which Harari says that to him happiness is expanding knowledge and understanding truth and reality. But maybe that is not enough. Maybe we also need to intensely live it.

At first I thought Dan was being arrogant, but then I remembered that Israelis love to argue - and I realised Dan was just trying to push Yuval into a more behavioural day to day point of view. Love both these guys!
I love this. Two great thinkers from the same place in the world but with completely different styles, approaches and outlooks. Beautiful contrast. I tend to lean toward Harari's stoicism over Ariely's sanguine-ness, but both are wonderful.
as someone who has read Harari's book and taken Dan's irrationality course, I can firmly say whatever rudeness some may sense is more a reflection about themselves - these are two world experts (so naturally a bit opinionated) agreeing and disagreeing on things with a bit of humor and the proverbial pulling of the leg; don't take stubborn sides and groupthink people - ideas no matter how good you may perceive left unchallenged become dogmas and ideologies

This was perhaps the most engaging and interesting discussion Prof Yuval has been recently into. Dan is such a wonderful thinker and speaker, he surely made this a fun discourse. Two great minds engaging, loved it.

They are having a great conversation. it sounds a bit off at first but when you start listening to the two they both have different colored inputs that make up for a great mix.
Yeah, strongly biased and opinionated people typically gets more fame and attention than real researchers and scientists. This is why Yuval is known but Dan Ariely is not. Dan's work is fantastic, but no one knows. Shame.

This is the first interview I have seen on TH-cam in which the interviewer speaks more than the interviewee.
There seems to be a lot of Jewish humor in this which escapes us heathen. Something about the perfect argument. Good arguing style, too. The using the "depressed" label is really a joke. Harari's body language is eloquent enough to the contrary. Very enjoyable talk. Good job by Ariely to lure Harari away from his pre-meditated lectures.
I was told the end game. It is selective parenting. The 133 investment families that established IMF and run the macro-economic system to their benefit disagree on quite a bit. Actually everything but one and that is selective parenting. She said the goal is all babies are fixed at birth. I wonder if these "elites" who THINK technology will always be there have thought about a solar flare.
They have no idea what the future will looks like yet have it all planned out for us. This guy has said when the catastrophe strikes they need to step in with a global authoritarian rule. The same old recycled bullshit with a new coat of paint. Money changers control the serfs. If he sees us as animals we are expendable as long as we don't suffer? Well euthanasia does that. The things that have made societies secure and cooperative are nation-states, communities and the ability to provide for our families. She flat admitted man-made Climate Change is BS but they make billions of of the idea there fore promote it until recently. She said it is getting in the way of real science and has created to many soldiers marching and beating their drums for the cause. I was open to the idea until she told me the flat truth. I do see their family publications haven't stopped promoting the idea. This isn't to say pollution garbage and human waste isn't a problem because it is. They are making economic zones and she said nation-states were created as a way to serve the banks and commerce. Beast of the Earth will soon be arising as they will be merging the 3 central banks of North America. Asia is the third that will coalesce in about 10 years. The bible doesn't mention the third so either it is irrelevant in creating the cashless society or things are going to start moving quickly but those idiots that wrote this 2,000 years ago were just backward homo sapiens that needed a story...

Well, I don't think it was Jewish humour (partly because I am not Jewish and I still understood it ). It was just humour. I think Dan Ariely represented a caricaturised version of "everyday common sense" as a contrast to Harari's careful, well thought out, academic speaking style to get original answers.
Such an interest and fun interview between two great minds.
Professor Harari’s understanding of human nature is spot on and his ability to stay focus is admirable.

Yuval is a genius level teacher, and Dan is a genius level moderator/interviewer. Very few people will understand.
This turned out to be more of a "debate" with Dan Ariely showing off his experiments and challenging Yuval Harari of his ignorance of humans' irrational behaviour. From the MBTI perspective, Ariely is a Feeling type (ESF) while Harari is a Thinking type (INT), and they both tackle issues differently. Haha! I have more faith in historians than in social psychologists. The part 21:30 to 23:55 is spot on!
this discussion shows me that for understanding human nature, historical approach seems better than psychology, or any other disciplines. bravo Harari!
I'd say it's more of a "Harari's" approach. This man has a remarkable ability to think very deeply and to explain the most complex subjects in a coherent and eloquent way. He's not the only historian I know, but he's one of the best, if not the best.
With all that being said, he might be wrong with many of what he says or writes. Yuval is just telling us a very compelling story based on other stories (science) and his own ideas so we can think about and be aware.

interview, it's a shame that you do not have the possibility to perform
the simultaneous captioning of subtitles to other languages.
Even not so surprising to see how superficial and biased most people are when it comes to those they praise and attack. You can see in comments that those who like Mr. Harari (never mind the reasons) simply attack and criticise Mr. Ariely, though, Harari keeps giving cliche, easy and prepared responses. It's depressing that even when it comes to scholars and intellectuals, people still treat the same way they would have, in case of their favourite musicians or phone brands!
Please just analyse for yourselves. Read (if you don't mind!) and watch different scholars with different perspectives and form an idea for yourself.
People like praising those they know, those they are comfortable with and have accepted in advance, and sadly most of them don't even listen to their opposite sides properly.

Harari is in a different league from Ariely but even as he thinks in a big way about the big problems in the long- term he does not deny himself a lot of 'cheap shots' warmly applauded by the herd-crowd. His remark about the Bible which is a foundation-document for all human religious, moral and literary understanding is a good example of this.

I truly believe Yuval's opinion about the true motives of science is accurate, the largest research funds go to academic areas which offer value in the form of control, and very little go to places that offer no control or control about unprofitable domains; e.g: the social sciences usually don't get as much funding as the more hardcore sciences (STEM) because they either offer little control or control over unprofitable domains.

It's so funny that they couldn't tell each other that they were talking about different things with the words "power" and "control". One was thinking about Foucault's theory while the other one was thinking about human beings overcoming helplessness in life.
In minute 12:25 Mr. Ariely mentioned the experiment of analyzing collaboration. I would challenge or suggest him, doing the same experiment changing money for other asset. Basically trying to avoid the additional forces that money creates, or imply. I used term additional forces, because we have been trained to believe money will solve all our problems, so our reaction to loose or win money is different in comparison to other asset. For this reason I would suggest to use other asset, to see if human collaboration swing as easy as Mr. Ariely mentioned.

It was a great conversation, but I found myself so disappointed when Mr. Ariely pulled it away from Mr. Harari's discussion of the role of stories and our sense of wanting to find one that gives our lives meaning -- he was never able to get to how he resolved this desire without being depressed by not finding meaning in the larger stories of existence that science reveals to us. Does anyone know where Mr. Harari addresses this elsewhere online or in his writings? That and the intriguing discussion of science as mainly aimed at control -- without much room to discuss the moral implications of this were both interesting beginnings of conversations I could have listened to for many more hours.

Mr. Harari is as eloquent and intelligent as ever... the interviewer however is obviously very intimidated by Yuval. He is so passive aggressive and competitive. Perhaps it is a cultural thing... nonetheless Yuval is so grounded and mature that it all moves right through him and he nails the points again and again. He is an Olympic thinker:)

Ariely's resistance to Harari's idea that religion and science represent order and control betray his blindness beyond insular psychology. The brilliance of Harari is his ability to describe and step out of the "story" we all live in that is both elevating and fictitious.. So disappointed that he couldn't think of one joke though.

What a great dialogue between Dan and Yuval - the one challenged the other in a way that illuminates our individual differences including at an intellectual and spiritual level.

Well of course the main value of science is power. To the extent that information (and therefore the truth) IS power. If you're curious and well informed (you know the truth), you're powerful. They are both closely linked together. That's all there is to the discussion. Information IS power. And power can be both good or bad, some people use their power for very good reasons and goals, some other use it for horrific ones. Science seeks the truth and therefore grants power to anyone curious enough to find it. That is it and there is nothing wrong with it either.
He used the word "control", but yeah, exactly, control or power is a result, but not the aim or agenda of science. It was a meaningless statement that most swallowed as some revelation here. LOL.
Your future isn't his to dictate. This is what he does every time you listen. His will being the rule is what he's covertly charming your mind into accepting as the status quo. It's not his place to dictate your future.

Why? Yuvul says he didn't recognize he was gay till he was 20 something. Confused much? I mean "recognize" or programmed to be? He's a pencil neck weakling, never good at anything physical and has wet dreams about putting on an Iron man suit so he can "kick ass". Look at him. Bald, thin wrists, upper arms the same girth as the wrists...just a weak human being with the mind of a child watching cartoons. Hi yuval, how the meditation change your day to day life ?, it make you more apathetic person - control your emotions ? (1) Are and how you deal with disrupts things like bad habits (2) ? and in other subject. how do you deal with the lack of anonymity ? because of saying your truth you are not afraid of struggle with Interest groups and governments? I was at this discussion and the entire audience around me seemed to also be quite annoyed with this interviewer. He was the absolute worst. Kudos to Yuval for drudging through it.

As unexpected disruptive challenge or any significant change can't be taken over put an effect on our life, single entity is not allowed with resolution or stepping forward until others are participating collaboratively how powerful or influenceful it is. As money is one of impressive instrument evaluated at the modern society, people with success embody how rich they are. As for committing suicide, one is suffering from framed reality and one is desperately devouring wrecked news spread over. How desperate he may locked in, he keeps in meaningless life and he looks for alternatives for him to escape. Religion is spotting on someone because he wants someone over people to forgive his sins. As disruptive challenges, e.g. intelligence artificial make people afraid or threat to our value, we more rely on our imagination and creativity.
There is some sort of departure from reality to possibility and possibility for me can never be a reality as long as it is a possibility. What forms the long run is the short run....

"Fake News has been with us for a thousands of years, just think of the Bible......." - I burst out laughing when he said this.
Dan as a palliative care physician I face this question many times a month people face serious diseases, extremely difficult treatments that are prolonged surgeries, toxic medications, unending rehabilitation. Some accept the journey and some decline it. I think the more you can think in future and more clearly you understand how certain your quality of life is going to get affected long term makes a difference in decision.

Most educated people who can think in terms of quality of life and have had a decent life are ready stay thanks but no.
Those, who however have milestones to reach, engagement, marriage , graduation, childbirth, a milestone birthday anniversary or look forward to someone coming and seeing them everyday tend to hold on.
Harare is not depressed. But you my friend I think are profoundly affected by the incident. To be fair , You would not be human if you weren’t . I am very avid reader of your book writings and talks. Stay well and keep on doing the good work that you do !
