Those other electronic shops just want to sell new stuff, it's like when my HVAC unit broke I was told by others that it isn't fixable, but when one independent contractor came out to look at it, he replaced a simple failed capacitor and we were back in business (he also said that big companies are told to say units are broken in attempt to sell new units). My point being, that person with the 4006 had to find the right shop/guy (you). Great video! BTW, can't wait for the "intercom that didn't exist" video! :)
Hi Vincent: You're correct, manufactures stress sales over repair quite often now-a-days. NuTone stopped actively signing up new Service Centers 20 years ago and when they do sign up someone new, there's no training, technical support or oversight of how they operate. When I started 30 years ago, there were very high expectations and standards that I had to meet to continue as a Service Center. The trade off was, if I meet their expectations, they would support me and help make sure that I was successful. I always saw it as a fair trade and up to the time that NuTone was acquired by the current owners, Service Centers were considered to be a valuable asset to the company. Now we have been marginalized and are treated more like a nuisance. - Chris
I used to live in a house with this system built in. I never had this problem, but I still turned the volume down on my speakers because of that faint whine coming from the system that you hear after it's on at 10:50. That tone drove me crazy at night!
Mine had the same exact issue with the awful loud buzzing, but I was able to buy the parts off Amazon and rebuild the power supply, and now it’s back to normal. But I have mine as a collectible item. I had somebody build a wooden box me so that I can fit it in there instead of the wall. I also have a switch on mine, so that it’s not on all the time and it will last longer.
Hi Stewie: Well Done of fixing your IM4006 - The typical life span of an IM4006 begins when it is first installed and usually it will be 25 years +/- before it requires any amount of refurbishment (very long-lasting, I think) Since yours seems to be used mostly as a radio, having a master power swicth is fine - For complete Systems, which inlcude use for the Intercom and Chime, turning the Syetm off is not usually practicle - Chris
I get really annoyed when I hear from people who need their NuTone Intercom repaired and they tell me that they have already spoken with others, and they have been told that their Intercom isn't repairable becasue: "they're too old" or "we can't get parts" or 'they don't make electronics like that any more". NuTone Intercoms are all very repairable, if the person doing the work really wants to repair it. Watch this Video - see the single most common failure for the NuTone Model IM4006 and IMA4006 - Then see it work correctly after I have repaired it - after all it's not rocket science , we're just fixing intercoms - Chris
Hi Chris - I have a cosmetic problem with my IM-4006 - the front plates have yellowed terribly over the years - is there a way to get them white again?

Do you make a component kit with all the capacitors and stuff needed to refresh one? I’m good with a soldering station.... also I need a transformer for one. Are the IM4006’s 16v transformers?
Hi The Bryan Family: No, we do not sell component kits. If your IM4006 has failed enough to kill the Transformer, it will be in need of much more than a "refresh" - Chris
I have noticed that mine has a loud howling sound when I turn the “system volume”knob down and have the “master speaker volume” up. I like to keep the main volume knob to a listenable level and have the master speaker volume slider including the remote station knobs set to maximum. But when I slightly turn up the system volume knob that sound disappears. I’ve noticed whenever I turn the remote stations off that problem goes away. Is this normal? I only have 2 remote stations installed.
Hi 2012-v9b: What you're describing seems odd and not normal. Typically a "howling" noise would be related more the the "Intercom Volume" setting than the System Volume. Howling usually indicates some type of feedback with the Intercom function. Do you normally keep the 2 Remote Stations in the "Radio / Intercom" on the IM4006 (room-control switches)? The troubleshooting would be to disconnect the wiring to the 2 Remote Station - from the Terminal Board (not at the remotes) Then set the System Volume to the desired level and use the Master Station - Then reconnect just 1 Remote Station - Test the System again - Then add the 2nd Remote (having disconnected the 1st remote) and test - I think you have either a Wiring or Remote Station problem (however since your IM4006 is at least 28 years old - it could also have problems) - Chris
ahh, I found the problem… somehow overtime a connector was plugged out of a bored. I plugged it back in, hooked it up and it works fine now. It was just strange to me because it got a full rebuild 4 months ago.
For some reason on mine there’s no sound for the radio unless I press and hold (door talk) button and when I increase volume sound cuts out. Could be relay issues not sure
Hi user-xp6kr2no3w: There are many different factors to consider in regards to the problem you describe - 1. Your System is somewhere between 28 ~ 37 years old, so it may be "old & tired" which creates operational problems - 2. The circuity that controls the Intercom Functions mat be damaged, causing the problem - 3. Some mix of 1 & 2, plus other problems tossed into the mix. I can say with a very large amount of certainty is is not s "single-point" issue like a relay - Chris

Hi The Nd: NuTone no longer makes any Intercom equipment, so there's no upgrade path with NuTone. You would need to look for another manufacturer who offers equipment that can use your existing NuTone IW6 cable. Since you would be switching brands - you will have to replace all of the equipment in your system - Repairing what you have id often simpler and less costly - Chris
@@northsideservicecompany3567 I managed to find someone selling a brand new ima 4406 the one with a cd player and it matches with the 6 wire system like ours has so hopefully that will work with the other speakers we have
Hi dhall515: The problem is the ever present background buzz - This is entirely an "age-related" problem - The IM4006 is not officially "old & tired" - Chris
I live in a home that had one of these systems. There was the loud noise that would not stop so I removed the system. We don't want to get it reparied since we don't use casettes. Hi Diane: Removing the system because you don't play cassette taps is interesting. Did you know that you can add an External Audio Jack to the Master Station and plug in external audio sources like your phone or an Amazon Echo Dot and even use a Bluetooth Receiver to connect to it wirelessly? - The Audio Jack costs just a few dollars and it's easy to add - Here's a link tot our Video that shows how to install the Jack: th-cam.com/video/OUKz-DPnAT4/w-d-xo.html Chris
Hi The Nd: I see that you filled out our on-line Repair Request Form - I'll be contacting you directly, next week to discuss your IM4006 and its repair - Chris
Hi Grant Taylor: The short answer is yes, probably - The longer answer (or question) is what else is wrong? Depending on how long the Master Station has been failing (while being ignored by its owner) the failure will grow through the set - meaning that there will more to rebuild. For long term reliability much needs to be done - Chris
Very good video and very helpful, but it was painful to watch because you take way too long to get to the point, and you repeat yourself over and over and over. Anyway, thank you for the help.
