A Quick Look at a NuTone Dinner Chime
Very true, you can't know everything about everything. The company I was with said " as long as you can find the information "
Hi chuck: I agree completely - being able to find the information about the equipment I work on - is one of the original reasons I started making Videos - Chris
changed an amplifier that fried after two of the wrong wires touched. after i changed the amplifier the intercom still didn't work. could it be the speaker?
Hi eduardo: Without much more detailed information about the Syetem - its problems - what was done exactly - I can't really answer your questions - Of course it's always possible that it's the Speaker that's bad, however it could also be soooooo many other things - It would be best if you contact us directly about this System - Chris nscompany@msn.com
This is the only DMCBT I've ever seen - These were only available for perhaps 3 - 4 years towards the end of the DMC production. These were never sold as a "NuTone" item for the NM Series of Intercoms, however they will fit in place of the CD Changer that was offered. The street price for the DMCBT was 500ish dollars and if you find a NOS unit today, the price is a lot more. I suspect that these would be a fairly trouble free device, but if they have issues - they are probbaly unrepairable - Chris
Thanks for the super helpful video. I am an electrician, and went on a trouble call for this doorbell. The mechanism is missing both springs and an end cap. May I order them from you? Thanks much, Anne
Hi Anne: You will need to conatct us directly about the parts for this type of Chime - Chris nscompany@msn.com
Tube sets make for warm audio! That is a great experience to have…
Hi N5PJ: Yes, tube amplifiers do tend to sound "warm" due to the distortion that tubes ininheritenly create - Chris
I subscribed to your channel a couple of years ago with the hopes of getting my IM3303 working again. Came across this video and it did the trick! Thank you so much!
Hi jkerry: Well done and you're welcome. Glad that the Video helped - Chris
Wish I could convince my dad to get our 3003 fixed. We live in peachtree city where almost all of the houses have lots of nutones of different variety’s of models, as I guess those were popular in the 90’s. As he says there’s no use for them anymore since you have smart phones but I think otherwise lol 😂
Hi locus-801: IM3003 are usually a fairly striaght forward modle to rebuild. It's not uncommon for some people to think that the Intercom System is outdate - It's common to have the use of the Intercom feature for communication to slowly become less and less over time ( as households grow up) - the Door Chiem is always an important feature for owners and while listening to the Radio is limited now-a-days, adding an external audio jack and connecting anothe rmusic source (I like echo dots) breathes new life into any system - Chris
yeah but he has blink door bell and the intercom makes the hum sound and when you talk into it it’s barely audible though you can hear the very disorienting voice ok but radio is bad and the fm signal moves back and forth I’m guessing something to do with capacitors? But I opened it up and the doorbell apparently my grandma says that 20 years ago they were sleeping and they heard the doorbell chime distorted over and over again play itself and no one was at the door opened it up back in December of 2023 and saw that the chime module had a burnt out resistor that was burnt off of it it’s black and crispy like toast lol
This Video was made to help Vincent reinstall his NuTone Model 2055 / 2056 Vacuum Tube Radio intercom Master Station - I hve tried to cover some of the most basic informations, that the average owner will need to know. The world of "Tube Technology" is moving further and further away for most people, who never grew up with or know anythng about what a "Vacuum Tube" is. They never went down to the local hardware store, with their parent to buy a replacement Vacuum tube for their families TV or Radio. I'll be thinking about what other iformations should be presented, to help owners of this typr of early NuTone Equipment - Chris
Not everybody knows what you do. I love that!!LOL
Volume is stuck on 32 can’t perform any functions with the buttons do you think you can help me.? This is the same model that you were working on.
Hi joey: It would be best to contact us directly about the problem with your M&S MC602 - Chris nscompany@msn.com
Can these audio assemblies be purchased these days?
Hi chris: Yes, you can conatct us directly about the External Audio Jack assembly - Chris nscompany@msn.com
Why did they put the aux behind the unit?
Hi mysonicisthis: These are considered "Built-in Systems" All of the wiring would be concealed in the walls, usually installed during construction. Also, you need to consider that these Systems are from the ealry 90's and there weren't many choices for "portable" audio sources. M&S did offere in-wall cassette players and CD Players. I don't think that many owners would have thought to connect an external Audio Source through an input jack in thoses days - Chris
Do you have any how-to video to remove 3303 face plate to send for whitening?
Hi loneranger: You will need to contact us directly about this - Please Do Not disassemble the IM3303 before talking with us - Chris nscompany@msn.com
Removing an Music & Sound (M&S) Model N350 Radio Intercom Master Station is not terribly difficult once you have seen someone else do it. Some palnning and a few tricks when discnnecting everything will make it easier when it's time to re-install the N350
I just redid our low voltage lighting this summer, took the old incandescent ones, replaced them with LED, and then reused the old incandescent ones (retrofitted with LED lamps) for the rest of the garden area next to our garage in the backyard, I did this in like May, and I’m yet to upload the footage lol
Hi MIW_Renegade: I did the same project about 12 years ago when replacement LED lamp assemblies became available to fit outdoor incandescent landscape lighting fixtures - It was a good project and actually breathed new life into some of my overworked Trasnformers - Chris
Looks like something made by *Soundesign* in the '70s. Cheap looking and unattractive. Can't believe anyone would want it repaired, but I know you'll be able to.
Hi ronk: The Black & Gold M&S Models from the 1980's were by far the most popular home Radio Intercoms because of the looks - But, it was the 80's - Everyone wanted lots of buttons and if you added the matching CTG Cassette Player (the worlds mosty expensive cassette player, about $498.00 in 1985) you would have trippled the number of gold buttons and it even had Red & Green LED Vu meters, fantastic - If you stepped up to the N440, you would even more buttons! - But, it was the 80's. . . A time of excess and finding ways to show it off - Perhaps you would would buy a new Lexus LS400 in Baroque Red Metallic ($35,000 in 1989) and then drop another $400.00 for a set of 24K Gold badges. . . But it was the 80's - You have to have been there . . . - Chris
I don’t think it looks all that bad, as well as even though these units are obsolete to most people, I like the idea of having these units in houses still, I will continue to maintain and fix my unit
@@MIW_Renegade Not really as obsolete as people think. Since they're "built-in", removing them is usually more expensive (and a bigger hassle) than having it repaired. That's why we are always soooooooo busy - Chris
@@northsideservicecompany3567 we don’t use the intercom part of our system anymore, but we do still use the radio a lot, it’s just a nice feature to have, it definitely is very expensive to remove them, and in the next couple of months, I’m gonna be adding Bluetooth to ours so it’s more useable for us!
@@MIW_Renegade It's not uncommon for the Intercom use to become less and less over time, using the Music is always popular. Adding Bluetooth or even just an External Audio Jack to any System make it much more usable in today's world - Excellant idea - Chris
Failed Tactile Swicthes have been a problem with M&S - Music & Sound - Equipment for what seems to be forever - I remember this being a problem all the way back in the 1990's - The fix is straight forward but a little complex to do - Chris
Hi, where can I buy your relay switch?
Hi iHeartindieGames: You can contact us directly about the Relay Boards - Chris nscompany@msn.com
I cant figure out how to set it to all the speakers like it did someone moved the settings now i cant figure it out
Hi meyalliaguirre: I am unclear on excatly what you mean - However this Video may help: th-cam.com/video/vOm9FLeOzLI/w-d-xo.html - Chris
Just a big Thanks to Robert for sharring - Chris
The connections on the Terminal Board are important to understand when you're trying to repair or add to your RCM4 System - This information does not seem to be widly available, I hope this Video helps someone - Chris
Looks like someone really put some muscle on those screws!
HI bigchevs: yes and they probably had to small of a screwdriver as well - Chris
All those years ago, I had all the equipment you're showing, although, like you, I never actually saw it working. What the sub-master actually did was a mystery to me, too. I wish I had it all back, the system was probably replaced due to a bad transformer or something simple I could fix now. I had lots of fun with the components. Had it wired up to play external radio and intercom functions via a Radio Shack (Archer, I believe) two station intercom. Had so much fun.
Hi ronk: I have personally taken out many old Rittenhouse Intercom Systems when they were upgraded to modern NuTone Systems. I was never worried about reusing the existing Rittenhouse wiring, because it was such high quality. I remember the first time I replaced a Rittenhouse System which had a Sub-Master and the built-in Doorbell in the Master Station. - Chris
@@northsideservicecompany3567 I don't remember the doorbell at all. Either it never existed, or maybe the installers grabbed it for the repair of another unit. The wires on mine were all cut and surely used for the new installation, an IMA406 which I wonder if it's still there.
Very neat indeed! Those Rittenhouse units are an art form, the backs are so precise with the metal enclosures, metal stand -offs and the silk screen lettering /numberings - you want the back to be seen as much as the fronts. They were sure trying to offer best sound/fidelity with the option of venting your speaker.
Hi groovy: I would say that a lot of thought and design went into their products. It seem sthat they were trying to create products that were miles ahead of what else was offered. This makes how Rittenhouse ended up even more tragic, always struggling and miles behind everyone else - Chris
I attempt to describe and explain some of the mystery's about the Rittenhouse IR7 and IR7X Sub-Master Stations, used with the Rittenhouse RCM4 Radio Intercom System - Chris
One tip I'd give for anything like this: if this has a lot of paint around the edges, use a putty knife to carefully help separate the unit from the wall. That'll make it easier to remove and will prevent the paint from tearing away from the wall. A very common issue when you have a house with something that been in the wall since the 70s.
Hi Michael: Very true and a good tip - Chris
Figuring out how to remove a Rittenhouse RCM4 Master Station is not simple - until you see it done once. After that is fairly easy to do. Plus I show how to reinstall the Master Station - Chris
My parents have this chime, but the two-tone plunger is so dirty that it doesn't work well. At least one spring is also pretty mangled. Can I buy replacement springs to employ when I take it apart to clean?
Hi Bluecalcite1: We do not have springs for your Chime - If you search online for "nutone chime base" you will find that exact item for sale. It will use the same plungers and springs as your parents chime (check the picture carefully) - If you look carefully, you shuld be able to find what you need for under $20.00 - Chris
Thank you. Do you mean to search for Nu-tone bases generically and then sift through the results for an LA43, or did several models use the same base and I just need to locate a base that looks the same as the LA43?
How was it possible to get a clear and custom cover?
Hi gdi9320: While I didn't ask Katie where she had the cover made, I suspect that since she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, the cover might have been made at TAP Plastics. The not only sell plastic materials, they can do custom plastic fabrication. I have had times when they made custom items for certain installation that we have done - Chris
@northsideservicecompany3567 incredible. I'm going to find if anybody does that in Detroit since I live across the border. Or the Toronto area
THank you. It is great to see a very professional video and I am going to attempt to repair my coil as you describe.
Hi andrew: Be extra carefull with the 2-wires that are connected to the Motor Coil - Don't pull on them or stress them in anyway, otherwise the paper wraping around the coil will tear and the wires will come loose - Chris
Are you aware of any K model chimes available for purchase? I also need a new striker.
Hi nicholas: No. "K" Model Chimes are difficult to find, especially complete Chimes with Covers and Tubes. If you do find one for sale, factor in that it will need to be completley refurbished if it's going to be put back into use. Also, be aware the the Tubes will likely be cracked on their tops - If the cracks are small (1" or less) it's not much of a problem, however I've seen cracks that are 2" ~ 3" long, which makes the tone sound flat and mostly usesless - Chris
@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thanks Chris. I actually have a complete set of tubes with no cracks just very tarnished and one of the tubes had lost the string loop at the top to hang it so someone had drilled a hole to MacGyver a hanging mechanism. I am going to try to polish the brass and need to follow your instructions on repairing the the striker, but the one side with a striker is functional. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks for your videos. I am trying to save this doorbell instead of replacing it given it is so cool and reminds me of the chime in my grandmothers house
@@nicholasmanolelis3968 Here's a link to our Video about making new Hanger Cords for your Tubes - th-cam.com/video/aV8rr0SXeZY/w-d-xo.html I am unclear about your questions regarding the "striker" - Chris
If i didn't care about retaining the nutone functionality, would it be possible to just use the wiring to the push button directly to the nest camera? The wires to the button and speaker seem much smaller so id be worried about sufficient ampacity through those wires. Is that a valid concern?
Hi DrDyDX: If you completely repurpose the existing wiring to power just the Nest Camera, it would fine - This means disconnecting the wires that you plane to use for the Camera Completely from the Intercom System (from the Door Station and from the Master Station) The other consideration will be, the power for the Camera. The Camera should have it's own dedicated transformer, although it it tempting to piggy-back the Camera on the Intercom Transformer - doing this on some models on Intercoms is mostly ok - some model not so much - Chris
@@northsideservicecompany3567 thanks for the reply! Since my current nutone system is pretty shot (none of the microphones work and all the speakers crackle badly) I just isolated the power supply from one of the two transformers and spliced power into the button wires. The design of the central unit was frustrating because the pin connector to the motherboard was GLUED ON 😡 ... But after cutting it off, and splicing it to the power feed, the nest doorbell worked perfectly! Thanks for your explanations!!
@@DrDyDx It sounds like to have a IM3303 System which needs a little attention to have it work well agian (considering it could be as much as 30 yeras old) A little cleaning and adjusting would get rid of the "problems' you describe - and BTW the Power Cables are not glue to the baord, they are soldered and they should hve been disconnted at the Transformers - not ripped off the boards - Chris
@northsideservicecompany3567 I've never seen green soldering, plus it was a plastic pin connector that connected to the board. I'm no expert so I'll gladly send you pictures if you'd like 😊
Great video, super helpful! So these Nutone chime kits haven't changed much since the 50s? I have one in my house, that was built in the early 2000s, and I'm trying to determine if it's compatible with a Ring doorbell, but I don't see a model number anywhere. Ring has a long list of compatible Nutone chime kits, would it be safe to say that chances are good my early 2000s model is compatible?
Hi PseudoSane: Mechanical 2-Note Door Chmes Chimes haven't changed much over the past 80+ years - The details may be different, but the basic designs are all fairly simular. If your 2000's Chime has electromagnetic coils - Plungers with Springs that strike Tone-Bars, it is very likely it is compatible - Chris
Very neat!!!
Hi groovy: Yes, It's truely an awesome Chime with a sound that's terriffic - Katie did a wonderful job with her 'showcase' installation - Chris
Thanks for saving me couple of hundred dollars. Mine had red lights on with power outage and nothing was working i reset it. Thanks again

If your M&S (music & sound) Model MC350A stops working or works incorretly - especially after a Power Outage - try performing a Reset on the Master Station - to clear and reboot the Microprocessor - Chris
Cool 😎
Hi dragonman: Yes and thank you - Chris
What is the common problem?
Hi dhall515: The problem is the ever present background buzz - This is entirely an "age-related" problem - The IM4006 is not officially "old & tired" - Chris
I have this model IMB 313 I can no longer get the sound from the tape deck from the cd. Is there someway that I have shut that sound off? The volume button is up
Hi donna: Since your IMB313 is around 48 years old - There could be many, many reasons why there's no audio sound. Does the Radio play correctly? - Chris
That is the system I installed myself in my house while it was under construction in 2019. All NOS. Still works great! Thank you and great video!
HI bigchevs1: The 2 most common problems with the DMC and NM Series are 1) The Display Backlight LEDs fair and 2) The loss of any Radio Volume - Things to keep a watch out for - Chris
Very Interesting!
Hi groovy: You're welcome. . . More Videos to come - Chris
The NuTone NM100 is Exactly the same Radio Intercom as the M&S DMC3-4 ~ They have different Faceplates, but the electronics - functions and features are exaclty the same. For the owner of the DMC3-4 that called me about problems with the System in the home he just purchased, the solution was simple - Wacth and see hwo it was reolved - Chris
This video guess approximately 6x deeper than "the fundamentals" but was the only helpful video I could find. I wish there was a 10 min version without the discussion of "chime" vs "bell", "steel" vs "brass" bars, permutations of how the order of "front", "rear", "trans", etc. But being my crankiness of never getting this 45 min of my life back, I give credit for fully exhaustive information, and a sincere thanks.
Hi msspear: I'm never really clear on how to respond to a comment like yours - You found the information you were looking for - but you're unhappy about how it was presented - I guess its like the old saying "no good deed goes unpunished" I will continue to present information on whichever topic I choose, in the format that I feel is best - Your "cankiness" will not deter me from sharing what I know - Chris
So I bought this exact system just the faceplate and everything the wires are still in the wall I don't have the exact wires that clip from inside the wall to this unit is this unit still able to be used I mean I'm sure it is obviously cuz I couldn't find the original model that I had this is a very close unit to the one I had but the hole in the wall is bigger this one's smaller but if there is a way to make it work let me know cuz I bought it from someone but basically the guy took all the pieces apart put it you know just in a box and I'm like frustrated because you wanted me to put everything back together and set it up but I'm like you shouldn't have took it apart. So now I don't know if it's even worth it because it could be broken something kind of trying to fight him because obviously he didn't explain in the description on eBay that it needs to be put back together he just said electrician but I'm like that doesn't mean anything cuz you didn't tell me that it was in pieces and I have to put everything back together otherwise I would have not bought it just let me know before I return it
Hi UGotHooka: Your comment does not contian any useful, detailed information about anything I don't know what System your house originally had I don't know what System you bought I don't know why the original System was taken out You will need to conatct us directly and you will probably need to email use pictures of whatever id left of the original System and of the equipoment that you bought - Without details, I will not be able to help you -Chris nscompany@msn.com
Have not seen one of your videos posted in a while, hope you are doing well! One of your many devoted fans.
Hi bigchevs1: I have been on a self-imposed Video Hiatus - After making 612 Video over the past 9 years, I needed a break. Thinga are actually going very well and we are in the midst of the Fall Repair rush. I have some interesting Video in-mind for the Winter Season - Thanks for asking BTW - Chris
What chime is that called
Hi Extremely: The name of thie Chime is the "Symphonic" The chime it plays is a Westminster Chime (like Big-Ben) - Chris
I have this model Nutone 8 note Door Chime. I currently have a standard front door bell button connected to the front door screw on the door chime. I am also installing a Wyze Video door bell button at the front door and was wondering if I could connect the Wyze button to the same front door screw on the door chime. The reason is to have the same 8 note chime for both door buttons. I realize that I can connect either to the side or rear door screws. Would have both door buttons on the same screw create a problem?
Hi ron: I have no first-hand experience with the Wyze Camera - The problem you may encounter is - the wires that are connected to the existing Pushbutton ar enot 'power wires' and they may not provide enough power to operate the Camera - Also, depending on which style of Chime you have (fully machanical or electroniclly controlled) the Camera may not keep the Chime 'turned-on' long enough to complete its cycle - Chris
@@northsideservicecompany3567 I appreciate your response. Just to give you an update. I connected my new Wyze Video Doorbell v2 to my Nutone 8-Note door chime. Using their "door chime controller" which was included with the Wyze product and your directions for the wiring connections, I made the connections to the "front" door screw on the chime. I also connected my existing door bell button to the "rear" door screw on the chime. I also upgraded to a 16 volt x 30VA transformer. They both work with this setup. On occasion the chime misses the second of the 8 notes when the video door bell button is pressed. Thanks again for your video.
This is not true. Add a a transformer, relay, and free power module from the your video door bell manufacturer and you can absolutely integrated your video door bell with a Nutone intercom system.
Hi shootingstar: What I explain in this this Video is exactly true and correct, I suggest that you review the information in this Video - What you suggest about adding a Transformer and Relay, is exactly what I show in our Video from 4 years ago - Here's a link th-cam.com/video/t6YswmDNVyI/w-d-xo.html Chris
Great video with lots of good information. I have one in my home that was removed because of damage from hurricane Beryl. I do arcade and pinball repair so I thought I would do a cap kit on it and use my De-Oxit spray on the dials and switches. Was trying to figure out how to do all the solder work and you covered that very well along with a great suggestion on the tuner cable dial. Thanks for putting this together. Depending on how it goes... I may be reaching out to you!
Hi wrkey: I'm glad that the Video helped you - Chris
Great explanation on how to fix it.
Hi hildazofrea: Thanks - Chris
