    I really like your floral dress Janine! And what a great pattern haul, basic pieces you can make over and over again. I LOVE Stash Hub! One of my favorite features is the ability to download fabrics right from a website, you get accurate colors and the description and all other information. They are always updating with new features. I upgraded mine to a subscription I use it so much. You can see exactly what you have all in one place. Keeps me from forgetting what I have and over buying🤭Genius!

    Hi Janine! I'm spending the day in my sewing room and catching up on Fridaysews videos while I sew away. 😁 Livin' the good life, eh? I was so glad to hear you mention your bowling league!! Ours just finished up too (we placed a grand 3rd this year), and along with our community band and the school run season (2 granddaughters), everything I do seems to quit by the time May ends.
    I made most of a linen blend Mave skirt today, and am fusing all the interfacing on my Sandhill Sling (Noodlehead) pieces, so it will be ready to work on tomorrow. 👍 I've not done any bag making either, save for a simple tote, so I'm excited to get started. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on your bags, too, so hopefully you'll be showing us that 😁 Happy sewing and have a great springtime!!

    Hi Janine ~ I love your knit dress, those peonies, hummingbird and cat all made me smile! I would have been nervous to do it up as well and I may have some larger scale knits needing to become a tee shirt dress! I also have the Kwik Sew tee shirt pattern but have not alas used it and it has been in my stash for several years. I recently downloaded the Stash Hub App - paid version because you get more space - I use it for patterns more than fabrics and so far am very happy with it. You can drag the URL of the pattern and drop it into the app and basically your pattern is then uploaded to the app. As with anything technical there is a bit of a learning curve and moving the patterns into the app is a slow process but having access to them when you are out at the fabric stores is lovely. Have a great weekend. Cindy

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cindy, thanks so much for explaining Stash Hub to me! It sounds so easy to work with, much less labour intensive than I expected. I'll take a good look at it,
      That Kwik Sew is one of my favourites. I've used the shawl collar pattern a couple of times and it turns out well. The button loops are fiddly. I have written on the pattern "hand baste". Someone else commented that it was difficult to find so perhaps we are both lucky to have it?

    Love your print dress!! I don’t think the print is too big. I’m in Sloper School too and also getting behind. But whenever we finish we’ll have our personal fit to a T! My #1 muslin is all marked up with lines and notes till I can make a new version. I knew I’d run behind due to a trip, packing, finishing a house, and moving next week. Had to pack up all my sewing equipment but looking forward to a new sewing room!

    That dress is so lovely and you picked great patterns. I had some great sewing plans and getting started on some major dusting around here. Boy did that not happen. My Dr. started me on a new medication for my diabetes and weight management. I had a pretty bad reaction to it. I’m doing much better but still weak & I still tire easily. I did get back in my sewing room for a bit today and enjoyed it. Hopefully after a good rest tonight I will feel more back to my usual self. I really need to take a day and not organize my sew room but just tidy it up. I also need to do same to few rooms in my house. My dusting will probably be rescheduled for a week or two. We also have our garden to plant. Just taking one bite at a time out of the elephant. Good to be feeling better and good to be sewing again.

      I took a good look at the garden today and things are definitely growing! Tomorrow will be a bit of a clean-up day. Wish we could have a good day of rain to wash away all of the snow mold and pollen. Other than our time in a townhouse in Atlanta, this is the smallest garden we have had, so it's quick to maintain/clean up. Still, like you, once you get outside it is just lovely to stay there!

    Instead of vinyl, you need a thin layer of batting and some select hand quilting while relaxing with your sweetie. Use an embroidery hoop and a single thread running stitch, embracing the imperfection. Or you could have it custom quilted by a quilter who does it for a living. It would be a difficult first home machine quilting project. 🎉

    Loved this video! I would like to get my garden clean up done soon. I have a new puppy and I think he’ll be fine sitting in the shade in his crate while I work. I had no idea how much time and energy a puppy takes though I was warned. But I find him a delight. My cats don’t think quite as highly of him however! 🤣 Some day I will be able to get back to my sewing room. In the meantime, I will just enjoy what you’re creating in yours.

    Hello!!! I just wanted to stop by and tell you how much I love your dress. I love a large print but I’m 4’10” and can’t always wear large prints. I did want to mention that I made the by Annie bag, as a matter of fact, I’ve made many byannie bags. She is such a wonderful designer and also her directions are so good and easy to follow. I also have the Poppins bag mostly finished and is now in my WIP basket. I got frustrated finishing around the top. Good luck with both. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.

      Barbara, thank you so much for your kind words, and for sharing your experience with those bags! I'm excited to try both the By Annie bag, and also the Poppins. I think I'll have to quickly make up the Uh Oh bag so I can start on the Poppins. Is the top portion complicated?

    I LOVE your t shirt dress . I’m going to have to find that kiwi sew pattern. I went down the bag making hole last winter at my snowbird home in Az. ( at least 1/2 of our sewing club is Canadian including from Calgary). I made at least a dozen Zippy Bags from Sallie Tomato. It is addicting. There are so many tutorials on TH-cam . It’s been so fun. I now get my bag making supplies from Wawak. Such great prices.

      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Kathy, there are many independent fabric stores in Canada that carry Kwik Sew. I found a bunch at Ibea's in BC last year. Not sure if they have this one.
      ☀️ You have a snowbird place in AZ? We are thinking that the Phoenix area might be a nice place to escape winter. If you see this, could you send me an email? I have lots of questions!! lifeofjanine@gmail.com

    The dress is wonderful and you are so right about sewing things you are excited about - good advice! I have heard that cork is easy to sew with and I've seen a lot of cute projects made from it - good luck with yours, and good luck with that bag as well. As for pillows, maybe using some fairly lightweight fusible interfacing as a backing would help? I prefer paper patterns and hope they continue to be available - first Kwik Sew and now New Look possibly being gotten rid of makes me worry...😬- it would be so much less expensive for pattern companies to have you download the pattern and print it out yourself but common sense tells me they can't do that right away for everything - it would relieve them of having to ship the patterns, warehouse them, take the unsold ones back, etc....

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the suggestion to use a fusible backing for my panels!
      Patterns ... the pattern companies painted themselves into a corner with the pattern sales at JoAnn. AND I'll say it - no one seems to be doing the math on PDF patterns.
      Many of us won't pay the list price of $22 for a printed Vogue pattern but we will pay about the same amount for an Indie pattern that needs to be printed. A recent indie pattern that I had printed cost me $20 for the pattern, $15 for printing 3 pattern sheets, plus $5.55 for 37 pages of instructions. So that's a total of $40.55 for that Indie pattern. 😦 Even if I have a free pattern and don't print out the instruction sheets (a recent disaster for me), it's still $15 for that 3-page pattern. Craziness. Think I'll talk about this in another video because we all have to rethink this. (off the soap box now)

    • @user-wu7sv6hr7v
      @user-wu7sv6hr7v 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think I want to do projector patterns, either - I'm old; give me my preprinted paper patterns! Printing and taping them together is a lot of work plus the expense for the PDF patterns, as you have pointed out, can be considerable.

    Ha! Once a fabriholic, always a fabriholic. I made it for 4 months before I broke down and ordered a piece of French terry I couldn't resist. I haven't received it yet, but I hope it brings me joy! The aqua knit is so pretty on you. Personally, I would think that a smaller print would look too busy. So a happy accident.
    As far as making pillows out of cotton, I fuse a heavy non-woven interfacing onto both sides of the pillow casing. I works if you are just looking for decorative and not heavy use.

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the info on pillows! I was thinking of throw pillows for the family room, so nothing that would get a great deal of use unless someone has a lot of afternoon naps.

  • @joanneblair2087
    @joanneblair2087 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    When I make pillows I always add a layer of batting (usually a firmer iron on one) to the front panels. I don’t necessarily quilt them. It keeps them smooth looking.

    I was trying to imagine what large print you bought, and was blown away with what you actually bought. It's stunning. A few years ago the same thing happened to me. Now I know it definitely needs to become a tshirt dress. I think you will love you bum bag. I made one using a free pattern and a thrifted duffle bag. It is so versatile and the perfect size. I've had so many people ask me where I bought my bag! I went into Lululemon once, looked at a price tag, and walked out. I love New Look patterns and have a few of the ones you bought. I prefer a paper pattern. It's just too expensive to have patterns printed out. I'm finding PDF patterns are getting very expensive. I print at home, tape together, and trace the size I want, it's time consuming. What I'm noticing is that I might have a similar pattern in my stash and can pattern hack to get the look. Good luck with the bag making! I'm working on little girl dresses, some blouses, and hopefully some jeans.

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      LOL - we all seem to make the same mistakes! I'll admit that I've never been in a Lululemon. As a business, they can set any size/colour/style parameters that they like but I don't fit into what they offer so I'll give my money to someone else 😜
      Pattern printing is very expensive, especially if you also have to print out the instructions. I think that you're on the right track in finding ways to use or hack what you have. So many patterns are so similar, and we're a talented bunch, we will find a way to make it work!

  • @leannsews
    @leannsews 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I love your Tshirt dress, colour + fit ❤! I use Trello to keep track of my patterns. It's free and works for me. I have it synced on my phone + laptop so I put the photos on it front + back of patterns or in the case of indie patterns I screenshot fabric requirements and the front photo so I have everything I need in front of me. I also use it to make a ideas list and next to do list all kinds of stuff. I don't do it for fabric because I find it's easier just to look in my cupboard but I use it for gardening jobs, household jobs and lots of other stuff. I believe you can buy a more extensive one but I find that the free one does the trick for me you can share with your projects with a friend you want and you can make it list between tops dresses or whatever else you want and you can make due dates and reminders. I hope that helps. Like all programs it's only as good as you make/use it. Have a great weekend! Oh and thanks for the pattern ideas! 👏

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Leann, thank you for suggesting Trello! During the pandemic I went to a few online classes on Trello and had forgotten all about it. I'll definitely take a look at the app to see if it would work. Honestly, if it would help me to organise many things around the house, it might be a good all-in-one tool. I seem to jump between the calendar, a book with to-do's, and a spreadsheet and something always gets lost in the process.

    Janine, I made some pillow covers out of quilting cotton 4 or 5 years ago and I'm still using them. Used feather and down pillow forms inside. You’re not alone on the large scale print purchase. I have 3m of a viscose print of enormous scale, I can only see me using it as a duvet cover, definitely not the dress I had in mind. I have made the Cashmerette sloper but it’s much too short waisted for me. I’ll take the zip out and add some length to the bodice, hopefully that will spare me starting from scratch again. Your mum’s thread catcher is similar to mine (but black&white), they’re really useful. Nice dress!

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no! Is there a different style of dress that you could use with the fabric? You must be so disappointed.
      If you just need a bit of length for your bodice, you should be able to add on. And I suppose we aren't going to be 'marked down' if we work with the slopers we have. 🤣 I'm thinking of using a different coloured Sharpie to mark the larger size and stitch there. It really feels wasteful to cut multiple pieces of muslin.

      Nancy, decades ago I had a RTW top with a similar neck band but I've never seen that style in a pattern other than this one. Kwik Sew had so many interesting patterns. I hope that Simplicity brings some of them back.

    Love the t-shirt dress - the print is beautiful! Bag making can be a little fiddly at times, but it’s great when you need a break from having to fit things. 😂 I’m not a Big 5 pattern girl, but the New Look patterns you bought look great. Now I’m wondering where I might be able to find some in Montreal 🤔 I use Stash Hub and I absolutely love it. It’s great for keeping track of fabrics and patterns, but I really love planning projects on it too. Have a good weekend!!

      Thank you, Izzy! Now YOU are someone who will know about bags! If I have trouble, I may be sending you an SOS 😘 The idea of not having to fit something is very appealing, isn't it? I suppose quilting has that same satisfaction?
      And thank you for sharing your positive experience with Stash Hub. I'll take a good look at the app.
      You have a good weekend, too, You have had a productive week, with your three pairs of pants! 🙌

    I love this video and all of your happy projects and fabrics. Yes, spring is trying hard here and with it new enthusiasm and hope. The songbirds are back. I was so excited walking the other evening. The trees are still bare, but my goodness the bird songs! And yes, I decided a long while ago to only sew what I love. About 7 months ago I started a time consuming shirt in a fabric I just loved and had been hoarding until the right pattern came along. I ripped stitches and refit things so often, I'd lost my sew jo. Slowly, at snail pace, I worked on it and all I have left to do is sew on 12 buttons with my machine. I am so excited because it fits and looks awesome! I'm motivated again! Spring really does have a magical effect. After many years, I still miss my garden. I putz with pots on my balcony. This is long, just wanted to say, I truly get your vibes in this video. Thanks! Happy Spring! 🌷🌷🌷 Bernadette

      Aw, thanks so much Bernadette. I think we're kindred spirits! The other day I heard a Red Winged Blackbird and it lightened my spirits so much! IMO, putzing about in garden pots is one of the most enjoyable parts of gardening. Easy to maintain, and very rewarding. 🪴
      Congratulations for sticking with your shirt project. I hope you will soon have the buttons sewed on and be wearing it with pride.

    T- shirt is beautiful, you will wear it out. Love the neck ban. We should always make the things that bring us joy. Somehow we get caught up in the making and not the joy, lesson learned. I made the Annie’s overnight bag a few years ago and love it. Allot of detail and steps involved but comes out beautifully, use it often. Have fabric left over for a garment bag and maybe a zippered pouch. Forgot about those projects, thanks for reminding me. I often make pillows from quilting cotton. Add some fusible batting to make it more sturdy. You could do some machine quilting in straight lines or crosshatch. Have fun with it! Enjoy your pattern organizing. Have a fabulous week!

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Kathleen, I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only one who gets caught up on the making treadmill. Thank you for sharing that.
      And thanks for sharing that you have had good results with the overnight bag. Many steps is okay if there's no fitting involved! I have some fusible batting here and that may be a nice way to make pillows more durable and interesting. The Poppins bag has rows of quilting so it might be fun to emulate that.
      As always, I appreciate you watching and always leaving such kind and thoughtful comments.

    Janine, your dress looks fluid and summery - how I sympathise about buying fabric and then realising the scale of the design is way too big. I bought a linen blend to make New Look 6659 for summer but it just won't work. That's the last time I buy fabric online unless the vendor provides a video of it or drapes it over a dressform etc. It will now be made into a robe! I had admired NL 6163 for a long time, bought it a few months ago and have almost finished the trousers . . . and NL6656 was bought recently in a half price sale here in the UK. Hopefully the sleeveless version will look good in a small print viscose 🤞

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Jill, I looked at 6659 and it is such a beautiful skirt. I'm sure that your linen will be used for something equally pretty. We seem to have similar taste in patterns! I think 6656 will be lovely in a small print. And viscose will drape beautifully.

    Love, love, love the T Shirt dress!! I too have gone down the rabbit hole of bag making. My adult self asks, “how many bags could you need?” My inner child responds, “oh, but they’re soooo fun to make!!” My inner child usually wins. I use Stash Hub and love it, not just for patterns, but fabric and projects. I have it on my iPad and my iPhone. When entering on iPad, iPhone gets updated as well. If I am shopping and need to see how many yards of fabric I need for a pattern, I can refer to the app. It does take some discipline to keep it updated. As always, I enjoy your videos. Hope Spring comes to your world soon.

      It’s the perfect fabric for pillow covers! I’ve made several styles, and prefer zippered covers over envelope style (uses less fabric). Also, I’m in Calgary and wondering if you’re doing the ‘Dress a Girl’ project this year. I have planned on sewing a few, but who do I send them to?
