Josh Pate On Mike Leach's CFB Playoff Tweet (Late Kick Cut)

  • Mike Leach has added plenty of flavor anywhere he's ever gone, and recently his opinions on expanding the College Football Playoff somehow intersected with the conclusion of the Kentucky Derby. On Late Kick Live Ep 259 Josh Pate discussed Leach's reaction tweet to a long shot winning the Derby and how that correlates to what should exist in the CFP format. Is there any actual substance to statements like this once you get past the surface? Does this remind anyone of the arguments that were made after St Peter's made a run in the NCAA Tournament this past March? What are your thoughts on what's best for the College Football Playoff format and the sport overall? I am not a particular fan of Leach, and certainly not his current school, but his analogy is not bad. Horseracing is a competition--like football--with winners and losers--like football--and underdogs and heretofore lesser opponents sometimes win--like in football. The nature of an analogy is to relate to a commonality between otherwise dissimilar things. What made less sense to me was the argument against Leach's statement.

Josh, while I do agree with you, in this specific circumstance… What I appreciate about Mike Leach is that he still romanticizes College Football. I live under no illusion that Mike Leach isn’t also motivated by financial gain, and the foundational thrill of success through organizational efficiency. But I do believe that he goes into every game, against every opponent knowing there is 5-10 guys on any given roster they play, that lived somewhere either literally or metaphorically in the shadow of the home field they are visiting. Who turned their tv on no matter who came into town, or had that one spot near the field where the field announcers voice bounced off the trees just right so they could hear the .0000001% chance their team went into halftime tied.
I look back on Coach Saban’s comments(admittedly I can’t remember the timeline perfectly for this reference) but some time after they had played Georgia Southern in the early portion of the last decade and he passionately stated that they, “Ran through our **a** like **sh**(I know family show) through a tin horn and we could not stop them.” Which is a scare then years down the line the Citadel delivered as well. (Admittedly poor timeline here I am an IT guy by profession so I can’t memorize the details completely here)
However, I watch enough of the show to know he is juicing his players up with these moments of podium passion, something Saban has done endearingly(refusing to “declare” Tua Starting over hurts due to not wanting to hurt one of them publicly before discussing it with them privately. And in a unhinged way, leading to questioning if they have to fortitude to play 59:99 of football without a mistake when they “peak” cyclically due to the ebbs and flows of hemorrhaging players to the NFL and various other industries that don’t get enough respect.
But even Coach Saban, appreciates the idea that something weird that can happen when a group of 18-22 year olds, from some school most people can’t find on a map, get that one bounce and a little hope.
College football, even with NIL, and the SEC dominating, there is still that chance. Not that it’s practical to implement, nor do I think the product would be what Mike Leach believes it would be, but the idea shouldn’t be scoffed at, it should just be reframed. If anything Mike Leach is balancing all of this nonsense that circulates, leading guys to believe if they don’t end up at a SEC school with an NIL deal that they have somehow come up short, instead he entertains the ideas that we all know can work, because he knows what they can inspire.
It’s only a matter of time before one of these Citadels or Mercers or JMU gets one of these programs early in a September with 100 Mil of NIL deals, and they will go back to their hometowns, drink cheap adult beverages Im guessing Kirkland light, and talk about that game forever. I think that’s what is romantic and admirable about it. Especially given the establishment would never let Mike Leach within 100,000 Football fields of actual influence in how the game is conducted past January.

Mike Leach has always said dumb crap though. He used to constantly down the SEC and complain about SEC bias when he was in the PAC 12 and Big 12 and since joining MState, he's all aboard the "this is the toughest conference" train. It's always like that; coaches complaining about the recognition the SEC gets for being brutal, then they come here and find out firsthand how hard it is to win. Not just against the Alabamas and Georgias, god forbid, on any given year, the Vandys, South Carolinas, and Miss States of the conference are fully capable of giving you a dogfight.

Your counter argument to Mike Leach is that because we didn't pay attention to this horse's previous races or to St. Peter's regular season, then they didn't deserve to make the post season? This isn't a popularity contest. If my team can beat your team head to head, why should it matter which team had more fans? Do you think it would be unfair for a smaller, less popular school to pull out an upset victory over a larger opponent?
I challenge you to find an organized sport anywhere on this planet more unfair and unbalanced than college football. I doubt you can. Fairness or balance has never been what made college football great.
You said it yourself, a college football playoff would be more entertaining to watch. What else even matters? Get aboard the expansion train... Before it's too late.

@@JoshPateCFB ah, my apologies. Maybe if you spent 8 minutes articulating your point as opposed to 8 minutes telling a story about your hypothetically racist grandpa I wouldn't have misunderstood.
Josh mentioned that the contrast between the TV ratings of the regular season Vs the NCAA tournament are proof that an expanded playoff would diminish the regular season of college football. If that is the case, why are regular season TV ratings better now than they were prior to the CFP.
I would argue that an expanded playoff would cause fans of to be MORE engaged during the regular season. Right now, with only 4 teams making it, 95% of programs are practically eliminated from playoff contention half way through the season. What effect do you think that has on regular season engagement for those programs come November and December?

@@riestroutman3787 I think what he's trying to say is horse is not human and human playing football is not like human playing basketball have very different styles of game one in which upsets easier because of speed and point factors and the other which is the opposite of that 🤯

@@JoshPateCFB So you're into the constant narrative of what if. I'm tired of the media controlling college football. They do it in their rankings and in playoff selection. Look no further than Texas always being ranked preseason which effect the weight of their games and A&M being kept out of the playoffs in 2020 because Kirk Herbstriet shilled hard for OSU.
