Something I really like about this boss battle, other than the fact that it is fanservice, is after the boss does their desperate attack, Thordan absolutely loses it. He's running at you swinging his sword like a novice instead of his regal fighting style from earlier. He's not even focused on the tank anymore. Thordan is the only boss in the game who became terrified of the Warrior of Light on the last 10% of his health.
I know this was before that particular fight was out, but that's a little touch I loved about the Nidhogg fight as well. In his final phase after you survived his onslaught in the form of Estinien and even the tiniest bit of control he still had gives way to blind rage and desperation he uses Akh Morn to finish you off. It hits, you survive, and he just spams it 5 times in a row, desperately hoping you die.
And when you really think about it, in the eyes of these antagonists, what is the warrior of light? An individual chosen on a crusade for justice? The one who holds the power to wrought ruin to the wicked? Condemning evil into an eternal prison through unwavering conviction? Did Garland really did anything bad besides kidnapping Princess Sara, he was a knight of the kingdom, and yet because of WoL, he was banished into the future and past alike and took upon an eternal and immortal creature known as Chaos. Obviously, in this context, the warrior of light would seem evil, but no individual should have that kind of commanding power either for good nor evil.
And then ShB comes around, then the reason why Thordan's so terrified of you is that he saw that you were an actual Ascian all along and that he probably thought you were there to avenge Lahabrea lmao.
I love how, after you survive his ultimate attack, he resorts to those clumsy, awkward sword flails. This was a powerful moment for me--in a game were we routinely fight gods and demons, backing the most powerful foe we've faced into a corner, making him panic and attack in desperation was exciting.
I completely agree. He blindly mistook the power of a primal to be equal to that of a god and thought himself unstoppable. When in reality he's little more than a man in cosplay swinging around a big stick :3

THEY MADE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND A PRIMAL BATTLE! As someone who started with FF7, I shed a tear at the end of Thordan's ultimate attack.
I love the moment Thordan just goes nuts like a desperate maniac after realizing that his strongest attack barely hurt you. Storytelling... outside of cutscenes... in an MMO. Fuck, FF14 is so damn good.

I know! That was totally me! Haurchefant was so kind and caring and a true ally and friend in a really dark scary and confusing time for us at that point in the game, and when he was taken I was PISSED >:( Gave me all the fuel to light my fire to kick Thordan and his Knights' asses!
I love how both Thordan and Nidhogg battles include variations of Dragonsong in their theme. Thordan's has the "chorus of man" which makes it sound more heroic, triumphant, and holy. The dravanian horde's version is more Gregorian, wrathful and ancient sounding. Makes sense because both Thordan and Nidhogg are powered by the same source of aether, eyes of a wyrm. Also shows that both sides of thr war are corrupt and blinded, and ties in the theme of an eye for an eye.
The first thing I thought when I saw the Heavens' Ward turning into Primals, was "Oh god we're gonna fight Knights of the Round". I was not mistaken. That was an utmost epic ending.
+Edgar Buenfil That's pretty much all there is to the story mode version. Sure, there are some other mechanics going on, but the punishments are so minor that you can pretty much just ignore them and just tank n' spank
When I first did this fight, it was with a friend of mine, a Scholar. I was a BLM. We were both unsynced to avoid queue times, but both lvl 60 (the proper level for the fight anyway). It was one hell of a battle. We got about 50% of the way first try, then we both died. The Echo boosted our power, and we formulated a basic strategy, then revelled in the absolute fucking marvel that is this fight. It was **so** challenging, and SO fucking satisfying to get to the next stage. I could actually feel my heart pounding and my adrenaline building as we got closer to about 30% of his health, then he went into his desperate ultimate attack phase and we thought it was all over. We survived through amazing synergy, teamwork and co-ordination: abusing the everliving fuck out of manashift, manaward and galvanize, Eos on max healing and the scholar just constantly healing me as I tanked as a BLM. Without all the randoms there to mess up mechanics or spoil the experience, this was by far the best experience I've had with the game since I got it. We almost screamed when we finally defeated him: the scholar had died on the very last leg of the mile, I was on my last slivers of HP and the boss was flailing his sword about hopelessly. We traded, and I nearly died (1k out of 20k total HP) but I out-DPS'd him. After it was over, we both had to sit down calmly for a few minutes while the adrenaline wore off and our hearts stopped beating like mad. There was such obvious satisfaction. The whole fight was just extremely epic. The awesome music, the theme and tone of the boss, the story behind it and everything leading up to it. It was stunning, and I really hope there's more content like this coming with Shadowbringers - but with Okabe and Yoko Taro on the team, I know it's going to be an abolutely legendary experience with music that rends the heartstrings asunder. I still listen to Wretched Weaponry a year or two after completing Automata and it still makes me yearn for more, sometimes it makes me cry. No other game has wrought such raw emotion from me and that's why this fight alone is why I've cemented Square Enix as my favourite videogame producer, ever. Final Fantasy 14 is just amazing. The community is awesome and friendly, always willing to help with anything be it crafting or dungeons, the content is fantastic, it's constantly updated and everything is just satisfying in the purest sense of the word. I was expecting throwbacks esp for this expansion but for Square to pull off one of the most well known summons and turn it into a boss fight, use the same designs while retaining the aesthetics we've come to love AND incorporate the boss's Ultiimate in the same manner. Kudos. This was very well played
I felt goosebumps during the whole fight. The effects and atmosphere felt like a spectacle, and the OST building up at each phase, until the end. I love it so much!
I love how this game builds things up. Ascians were supposed to be OP, but then you struck two of them down at the same time, then Thordan comes in and kills them himself. Then you defeat Thordan and he wonders who, no.. WHAT you are. Epic. I really do get this mental scale of "holy shit how OP am I?" lol
Ngl I cry every fucking time I get this in a roulette or reach this fight on alts, the song, the planet, the glass shattering effect with the end of the ultimate attack and then him going insane at the end is just so fucking badass

I lost my mind at the 7:31 part my first time through. FC buddy and I were going ballistic in teamspeak. Have to hand it to SE, they know how to make one hell of a final boss.
+Chef Excellence It's kinda funny cause the more I play 14 the more references and art assets I see borrowed from 12 and 13, and those are widely considered the weakest titles in the main series (I actually liked them both, but I'm a weirdo). I mean, yea, they have easter eggs and teasers for most of the titles in the franchise, but still.... Like, I'm almost positive the writers for FF14 2.0 were the same writers that did FF12 (I guess they had to go somewhere, since the FF13 series was mostly a brand new team, and FF15 was developed mostly by the Kingdom Hearts team).

orrthehunter "Knights of the Round to be a Primal" um knights of the round was a summon in ff7, so why wouldnt it be primals? Ifrit, ramuh, titan, shiva, garuda? All summons turned primals in ffxiv.
nathan madden It is because SE never hinted KotR to be a Primal in FF14 nor mentioned there was going to be a 3rd Primal. All they did was said that there will be 2 new Primals with 1 being a exclusive to FF14 being Ravana and other being Bismark.

Although, I'm stumped so many of us didn't read the whole "King Thordan and His Knights Twelve" thing deep enough to realize that, oi, Yoshida's bringing back another FF7 thing. I mean, think about it for a sec - Before Meteor's Final Boss was technically Judge Sephiroth (shame they didn't use the Dragon Forme in 1.0, but I can kinda see why), ARR's Final Boss was FF7 Ultima Weapon, and HW's Final Boss was FF7's Knights of the Round. Really makes me wonder what else they'll pull from FF7 as the updates go by.

I'm a new player in 2024 and got to this fight. Sadly it was 5am in the morning so I could not get a party. I decided to go solo unsynced and it was amazing!!!.
Saw another TH-camr comment something similar, but while this entire fight was amazing, it felt so satisfying to put 'For Haurchefant!' in the chat right at the end of the fight as I activated my limit break, which ended up as the final blow.
Ah, yes, the loyal knight - most pivotal in your initial relations with Ishgard. The knight who always had your back. The knight who... You let die for no fucking reason at all. Just stood there and watched that beam take ages to tear through his shield. Frozen, wondering if it was going to kill him. If only you had had a quest objective to save him, you might have done so. But alas, the slave of light literally only ever does what he has a quest to do - anything outside the quest objectives, and his only reaction is to sit there like a gawking idiot. At the end of 2.0, I thought the warrior of light's greatest weakness was rope. You know, the whole strength to beat primals yet somehow a length of rope and the brass blades proved too much. But the death of Hauchefaunt showed the reality: if there's no quest for it, he can't do it.
@@Valarauko19 no, just that healers can’t undo death. In a fight, the player is unconscious, we just say they’re dead because it’s shorter and means the same thing gameplay-wise.
Y'know, looking at Thordan fight, I notice a lot of his animations are repurposed from Dark Knight job actions, with his model being roughly based on the one they used for Phlegethon/Acheron (difference being that those two hold their sword outward, like a Paladin would, whereas Thordan holds his inward, similar to how Dark Knights do). For example, Dragon's Eye uses the same animation as Darkside, but is an AoE stun. The animation for Ancient Quake uses the Unleash animation, but has longer reach and is Earth-aspected. And Dragon's Blood uses the Shadowskin animation, but is simply the stance he enters to enable use of Dragon's Eye. Something tells me that these bosses might actually work on a system similar to player characters - maybe one day we'll get a mode or something to play as Primals (or simulacrums of them, rather).
It fucking blew my mind that this fight combined the mechanics of nearly every primal, raid, and boss fight into one. However, I felt it was too early for a fight like this to exist.

If nothing else, it'd be cool to see an extreme level version of Thordan to compensate - Normally I figure they wouldn't do this with main scenario bosses, but they made Ultima HM, so why not Thordan EX? :c

***** It's a good fight, really ,but the way the really designed it is all show and no real damage. You would have to try to actually wipe on this fight. Maybe later on they'll do the same. Because if majority of these spells did any kind of damage, you could not duty finder this at all.

What I like about the Heavensward themes is... each theme goes with the area. Churning Mist(Soft version), The Aery(Full version) or Sea of Clouds(Soft version), Neverreap(Full version). A better example would be Ishgard(Heavensward Theme), The Vault(Heavensward theme played on an Organ). What's interesting about the Vault's theme is... every time you go to a different floor or section, the take a key out from the organ. I hope I didn't confuse anyone? LOL!
Absolutely freaking *love* the chanting in the refrain, reminds me of Nobuo's best works (mad props to Soken and his team) and when I'm just not feeling it (XIV will never be as good as XI was in my eyes) little things like this remind me why I still like XIV.

I love this fight so much. Not too many mechanics just a good old fashioned epic brawl. Wasn't expecting them to throw in all of the Knights of the Round, considering throughout the story you only saw like 4 of them. My first thoughts when I noticed "They didn't..." They did. You had to have played FF7 to get the full reference but I think a lot of people really appreciate this fight Now if only Duty Roulette would give me this for Trials instead of the FUCKING CHRYSALIS EVERY TIME, I would be so happy

The history of dragons in Eorzia is fucking sad. Always dragged into these earth shattering wars over power and control. Scores of them enslaved and imprisoned to suffer for eternity. The scope of the abuse and torment they've suffered at the hands of the Allagans as revealed in the coils of Bahamut is just heart wrenching. I have the Twintania mount and I cant even use it. Just the very nature of the neuralink device around her neck is too grusome for me to bare.

Like, I'm almost positive the writers for FF14 2.0 were the same writers that did FF12 (I guess they had to go somewhere, since the FF13 series was mostly a brand new team, and FF15 was developed mostly by the Kingdom Hearts team).

orrthehunter "Knights of the Round to be a Primal" um knights of the round was a summon in ff7, so why wouldnt it be primals? Ifrit, ramuh, titan, shiva, garuda? All summons turned primals in ffxiv.
nathan madden It is because SE never hinted KotR to be a Primal in FF14 nor mentioned there was going to be a 3rd Primal. All they did was said that there will be 2 new Primals with 1 being a exclusive to FF14 being Ravana and other being Bismark.

Although, I'm stumped so many of us didn't read the whole "King Thordan and His Knights Twelve" thing deep enough to realize that, oi, Yoshida's bringing back another FF7 thing.
I mean, think about it for a sec - Before Meteor's Final Boss was technically Judge Sephiroth (shame they didn't use the Dragon Forme in 1.0, but I can kinda see why), ARR's Final Boss was FF7 Ultima Weapon, and HW's Final Boss was FF7's Knights of the Round.
Really makes me wonder what else they'll pull from FF7 as the updates go by.

I'm a new player in 2024 and got to this fight. Sadly it was 5am in the morning so I could not get a party. I decided to go solo unsynced and it was amazing!!!.
I didn't realize the first knight that cast that room ride AOE that we can never seem to kill is Zephirin! I promised I get his heart...
Saw another TH-camr comment something similar, but while this entire fight was amazing, it felt so satisfying to put 'For Haurchefant!' in the chat right at the end of the fight as I activated my limit break, which ended up as the final blow.
Ah, yes, the loyal knight - most pivotal in your initial relations with Ishgard. The knight who always had your back. The knight who... You let die for no fucking reason at all. Just stood there and watched that beam take ages to tear through his shield. Frozen, wondering if it was going to kill him. If only you had had a quest objective to save him, you might have done so. But alas, the slave of light literally only ever does what he has a quest to do - anything outside the quest objectives, and his only reaction is to sit there like a gawking idiot.
At the end of 2.0, I thought the warrior of light's greatest weakness was rope. You know, the whole strength to beat primals yet somehow a length of rope and the brass blades proved too much. But the death of Hauchefaunt showed the reality: if there's no quest for it, he can't do it.
@@Valarauko19 no, just that healers can’t undo death. In a fight, the player is unconscious, we just say they’re dead because it’s shorter and means the same thing gameplay-wise.
This fight and theme kicked me in the face, it blew my mind.
SE did an amazing job with Heavensward.
Y'know, looking at Thordan fight, I notice a lot of his animations are repurposed from Dark Knight job actions, with his model being roughly based on the one they used for Phlegethon/Acheron (difference being that those two hold their sword outward, like a Paladin would, whereas Thordan holds his inward, similar to how Dark Knights do).
For example, Dragon's Eye uses the same animation as Darkside, but is an AoE stun. The animation for Ancient Quake uses the Unleash animation, but has longer reach and is Earth-aspected. And Dragon's Blood uses the Shadowskin animation, but is simply the stance he enters to enable use of Dragon's Eye.
Something tells me that these bosses might actually work on a system similar to player characters - maybe one day we'll get a mode or something to play as Primals (or simulacrums of them, rather).
Woulda been hilarious if Thordan said "Have at you!!" at the end like the black knight when he was flailing his sword around like in national lampoon.

It fucking blew my mind that this fight combined the mechanics of nearly every primal, raid, and boss fight into one. However, I felt it was too early for a fight like this to exist.

What I like about the Heavensward themes is... each theme goes with the area. Churning Mist(Soft version), The Aery(Full version) or Sea of Clouds(Soft version), Neverreap(Full version). A better example would be Ishgard(Heavensward Theme), The Vault(Heavensward theme played on an Organ). What's interesting about the Vault's theme is... every time you go to a different floor or section, the take a key out from the organ. I hope I didn't confuse anyone? LOL!

Absolutely freaking *love* the chanting in the refrain, reminds me of Nobuo's best works (mad props to Soken and his team) and when I'm just not feeling it (XIV will never be as good as XI was in my eyes) little things like this remind me why I still like XIV.

Photanic It isn't that bad as long as you can adapt to mechanic changes rather quickly. Still feels intense when you're fighting it though.
Photanic They did achieve for a great "Endboss" feel, it isn't actually "Hard" but it's helluva hectic and fun.
Sydonai11 It's also a great end game boss because it revisits a ton of mechanics from A Realm Reborn.. as if it was all leading up to this... Also, I feel like it would lose it's epic feel if you wiped over and over learning how to do the fight.

I love this fight so much. Not too many mechanics just a good old fashioned epic brawl. Wasn't expecting them to throw in all of the Knights of the Round, considering throughout the story you only saw like 4 of them. My first thoughts when I noticed "They didn't..." They did. You had to have played FF7 to get the full reference but I think a lot of people really appreciate this fight
Now if only Duty Roulette would give me this for Trials instead of the FUCKING CHRYSALIS EVERY TIME, I would be so happy

The history of dragons in Eorzia is fucking sad. Always dragged into these earth shattering wars over power and control.
Scores of them enslaved and imprisoned to suffer for eternity. The scope of the abuse and torment they've suffered at the hands of the Allagans as revealed in the coils of Bahamut is just heart wrenching.
