Ever since suggesting that cutie mark sin, I'm in a deep existential crises about whether cutie marks are mirrored on one flank and whether they should be...
2:06 for those wondering. Vinyl Scratch's cutie mark is like this, too. The noteheads face toward her butt, so the eighth notes appear normal on the right side of her body.
Y'all acting like this hasn't been a question since 2011 :') it's always been a mystery. At least to me, who learnt to draw ponies while growing up on the show
I actually like rara's name, because it's a non simple reference. Countess Coloratura, aka Rara - > Countess = Lady - > Lady Rara - > Lady Gaga. I just love spoofed names that aren't lazily simple.
In the latinamerican dub they translated her name (Condesa Coloratura) and kept her nickname Rara which doesn't sound good at all because it means Weird. So you watch Applejack refering to her childhood friend as a weirdo for the entire episode like it's totally normal.
As someone else wrote, pop is almost all you hear today (sadly). It is incredibly easy to write and the showier your outfit is, the better it is (and more popular you become).
I don't think it goes against the moral. The entire point she looked like that was to be society's standard "attractive popstar". In fact, I think it only adds to the plot on how they tried to change her.
Underrated? I don't think I've heard any brony say they don't love this episode. If I remember correctly, it even won a poll asking about the best S5 episode in the past. We can debate about it being the best (especially with the mentioned actually-serious-sins in the video), but it surely isn't underrated.
@@liborkundrat185 I think he saying it's underrated because there have been people in the fandom who have talked crap about the episode, i know because i've seen it.
I think the actual reason the show was trying to convey was that all this spectacle distracted from the fact that the song was literally about putting on a show to distract the audience from a song without meaning. Like, if you listen to it without the visuals, you'll see it's kinda boring, and doesn't convey any messages. Many modern pop songs are the same: They have no actual message in and of themselves, and their only selling point is the actors in the music video. Music is an art form, and like any art form, it is supposed to convey emotions and tell you about the artist. Pop songs don't do that. They're just background noise for the music video.
@@aa-bm9ln Svengallop forced her to become this way. Plus, Rara says "You clearly don't understand the REAL me!" and takes her veil off, symbolizing her standing up to him and saying she doesn't want to be like this anymore. Also, if she didn't want to change, she would've told Applejack.
@@Kartoffelkamm I just wish that they could have done a complex moral in which she still changes and uses a pop style, but shows real meaning. (The problem is that it wouldn't be very obvious to a layperson, and so it risks diluting the whole thing.)
I really wished this episode did something more with her cutie mark, giving it a subplot. When Rara sings, it glows. Neat, but thematically empty and not all that interesting. Now imagine the story where she actually got her mark at the summer camp when she sang for the first time. Then, at some point during the episode after her catchy popstar song, it's revealed that she somehow lost her cutie mark and has been painting on a fake one. It would be this huge scandal, but more importantly, it would be a literal representation of how she lost her identity in the process of becoming famous and adopting the "Countess" persona. Plus, that would open up lore implications that ponies could actually lose their cutie marks if they abandon their calling. But, to tie everything together, during the final song of the episode, Rara's cutie mark actually returns now that she's finally embraced her inner truth once again. The episode wouldn't be the story of a popstar firing her manager, but instead a story about losing your sense of self and how to find it again. And I think that story is far more meaningful.
I don't know why but every time I think of "The Mane Attraction" I always confuse it with "It Isn't The Mane Thing About You". I'm always like "Is it that episode where Rarity messes up her mane?". Then I'm like, " No no wait, it's the one with Coloratura"

Uh, curious about something: why did you refer to Minuette as "Colgate" in text form at 1:08, but properly as "Minuette" at 4:35? Is that a sin? I'm thinkin' that's a sin.
@HBegaming YT The main reason they couldn't use Colgate is because it's trademarked. On the side, they ended up using both Bon Bon and Sweetie Drops (which had both been used on merch) in the 100th episode. She'll always be Colgate the toothpaste pony in my heart.
Very cathartic to hear someone else mention how flawed this episode portrays certain aspects of what's going on. Made me feel incredibly uncomfortable that the autotuned Rara was supposed to be the "fake" or "bad" version of her, and that the one playing the piano was instantly loved despite how deceptive it would appear to promise a flashy concert yet deliver an orchestral performance.
"Childhood filly friend." Childhood and filly are the same unless it means something different like girlfriend? AH HA! They were laying the groundwork for the end show :D
Josh Haber made Rainbow Dash ambiguosly Bi back in S4E03; then Applejack was a textbook closeted lesbian in S4E13. -> Then the rest of the writters distracted us with the Rarijack for years.
Childhood girlfriend. Wow, I did not pick up on that. It does seem like a hard thing to do by mistake when the obvious correct line is fillyhood friend.
One minor quibble in otherwise an excellent CinemareSins: Svengallop's listing off of stuff from previous episodes is actually a little nod to a bunch of other Amy Keating Rogers episodes -- that's what they all had in common, and that's why it was included in the episode seemingly at random. I was actually quite looking forward to this moment in the Cinemare Sins video, as I was expecting that you'd probably remark on this, haha.
I think mainly the idea of Rara getting upset so easily, svengallop leaving without a fight and Rara panicking was to show and demonstrate an unhealthy manipulative relationship
Its not the only reference to Prince, in the episode where Celestia is forced into a play one of her coaches is Raspberry Beret, the name of one of Prince's songs
To be fair, Rara was becoming more famous for the flashy effects of her shows and not actually her own ability to sing. As many have speculated before, that awful manager could put anypony in that outfit and the results would be largely the same. I respect Rara's decision to go the Pearl jam route of going smaller scale and focusing more on her music rather than putting on some show that ultimately distracts from her.
I've always been curious about Rara's "real" version of "I am just a pony." Before she starts she says "This song may sound familiar, but it's totally different." This implies she had this song already played before, but with just slightly changed lyrics and the magic effects.
I got the notification for this video and rushed over as soon as possible. The mane attraction is one of my favourite episodes of my little pony! I'm so glad you made this!
As someone who seriously has issues with the way pop stars are represented in this episode, I'm glad that you called it out at times. Great video as always!
I was so sad to see Amy Keating Rogers leave. I wonder if she's still with Disney since I know that's why she left the show. Lena Hall for me did have the best singing voice in the show (but that's no surprise, she's a Broadway singer and I think those people tend to be some of the best singers ever).
Missed sins: 1. That copy-pasted scene in the "Spectacle" showing. 2. None of the ponies realize that it's autotune even though it's blatantly obvious since no one can sing with that filter and cut off notes (there may be an exception, but still), and there's a giant beam of magic cast at her neck. 3. The point of a live show is to NOT have autotune, yet here that one pony goes casting an autotune spell. 4. The insane amount of ponytail flipping. 5. Those blocky eyelashes. Great vid, mate! Honestly, the fact that either her fans will join her on her journey of self re-discovery adds some weight to the song. Though they sure could have found a few seconds somewhere to mention the possible collapse of her career.
I actually saw the episode more a way to show how something good can be deceitful. It doesn't seem to be something wrong overall with her popstar persona (Gallop seem like an ass regardless), AJ it's just shocked by the difference because it doesn't reflect the persona she used to know. One's the episode makes it clear that it is indeed a fake persona, the message for me becomes more of "Not everything that shines it's made of gold" instead of "It's always better to stay true to one self" even tho I'm sure that was the intent. Even tho it seems she has successful career, she is unhappy, and not living her life to the fullest. Even if everything she grew during that time dissapears, finding her true self it's more important in the end because she finds it more fulfilling. If she wanted she could have stay as that persona popstar one's she got rid of Gallop, but she chooses to go with something that brings her joy. It's a selfish message, and a tad foolish, but I have seen worse
2:08 Actually, in season 1, episode 14, "Suited for success," there is a scene where rarity is walking down a runway with the POV facing from the top and we can see the there are 2 cutie marks on her.
After he played megalovania at the end of the video and then played his outro, I can confidently say that his outro sounds very similar to megalovania.
Rara should have been the pop star for the movie. Would have answered the "Where did her career go?" question, and she's an established character who could have helped AJ with crowd control when escaping the StormKing.
Oh, I dunno, time travel shenanigans involving the day the Mane 6 got their Cutie Marks, yet everyone only remembers the Sombra future because that's the warlike ne.
I'm sure someone out there has tried to explain how different versions of stopping the rainboom has led to timelines where different villains have won, but it's really hard to conceive the connection with the villains. Or especially the final world where it's just armageddon. Presumably Rainbow herself has to be the cause of it all, since the lives of the other 5 shouldn't be affected outside of not getting their cutie marks at that moment.
Missed sin: I'm guessing since Rara ditched the flashy pop star persona all her male stripper backup dancers are all now out of a job I guess?

I would totally love to see Rara play Megalovania.
4:55 I swear, I'm having a strong dejavu watching Rara playing megalovania, but I don't know of what.
Ahh yes as i'm watching a bunch of his videos he uploads!
Is no one gonna talk about the fact that applejack has more freckles as a fillie then in the present?
2:41
It's backlit and has a roof and back, it's normally lit because it has lights in it
Starlight, what are you planning ?
Oh, I dunno, time travel shenanigans involving the day the Mane 6 got their Cutie Marks, yet everyone only remembers the Sombra future because that's the warlike ne.
0:39 I think at that flashing scene of the video said "THE END IS NEVER" maybe
The megalomania at the end awakened my undertale side
My undertale side: WHO SUMMONED ME
my other sides: AAAAAAAAAHHHH
Tune in next month for commie horse revenge/ time travel shenanigans that are more confusing then Endgame's time travel logic.
Pretty much the S5 finale lol
I'm sure someone out there has tried to explain how different versions of stopping the rainboom has led to timelines where different villains have won, but it's really hard to conceive the connection with the villains. Or especially the final world where it's just armageddon.
Presumably Rainbow herself has to be the cause of it all, since the lives of the other 5 shouldn't be affected outside of not getting their cutie marks at that moment.
Endgame’s time travel is simple, branching timelines that you can choose to which one you go, they even mention it in the film
@@gavinbrown216 I meant paradox wise.
*I love this episode just because of the music :D*

To be fair, I cried when rara sang her final song, and i'm crying every time hearing it. I just love this song too much i guess.
