This was relatively early into Luna's character development (Since in other episodes it was extremely vague) So I'm guessing that was due to poor scripting. But later on in the series it's confirmed that she sleeps during the day.
I'm not sure I understand your logic of "less guilt means more strength because Luna created it" She made it to torment her over what she was feeling guilty about and it feeds off her guilt and negativity, so I would think it is only logical that coming to terms with her guilt and dealing with it in a healthier way would weaken the Tantabus. That would deprive it of the thing it was feeding on to become so strong.

It's really sad, because Luna is my favorite MLP character, I loved all episodes with her. Basically, just the Nightmare Night one and this one... (and a couple more) She deserved better.
I disagree, I related a lot to Princess Luna in this episode and I honestly can't watch it without breaking into sobs at the scene where she admits she created the tantabus. We have to remember that they can't possibly show the years upon years of healing and recovery that it takes to get over your sins in just 20 minutes. It was fast just because the episode can only be so long, but I don't think it watered down the message. Not for me, anyway. The way I saw it, and the way I personally healed and related to her, is that sometimes you do need close relationships to help you heal, that you shouldn't only rely on yourself. And that, once you truly see how much people love you, it becomes easier to forgive yourself, it becomes easier to see your perks and the good things you offer to people. Of course, like I said, this process takes YEARS, but the message is still valid in my opinion. And also, of course, nobody will heal the same way as another person would. But that's how Luna was able to heal, and that's how I was able to heal as well. PLEASE remember this is just my opinion and my experience! Please don't think that just because it worked for me that it HAS to work for you! Some people don't appreciate being told how much they're loved means they should forgive themselves.

If I was Luna, I'd be incredibly offended that Twilight's first thought about a dream issue is "Shouldn't we get Celestia?" Considering that Luna turned into Nightmare Moon because everyone obsessed over Celestia and didn't care about her, a fact which Twilight is aware of, this was a really inconsiderate and downright stupid thing to say because it could contribute to a return of Nightmare Moon in which Luna uses that moment as one of many pieces of evidence that people still care more for Celestia than her. But hey, this is a kids show, we have to mention Celestia at least once in an episode with "princess" in the title.
Luna was literally hurting herself. Twilight suggested that because Celestia's forgiveness clearly wasn't enough to stop Luna from feeling guilty, so perhaps Celestia offering it again would help.

In the shows start she kidnaps Celestia, messes with the mane 6, and gets defeated. Nopony but Celestia suffered really, unless she somehow did things on the moon.
I know this is late, but in "A Royal Problem," it's revealed that prolonged nightmares can damage a pony's psyche, the kinds of nightmares Luna usually fights. Think of how many nightmares occurred over the 1000 years she was gone.

However, all she really did as Nightmare Moon was transform, have a fight with her sister (with no witnesses), spent 1000 years on the moon, came back, and just really caused the night to go on for a couple hours or so. Not only that, but after being reverted, she was forgiven by Celestia and was welcomed with open arms by the town. So immediately after, she created a nightmare monster to torture her for A: A crime what wasn’t even a crime due to no long-lasting effects and B: Was already forgiven for? Edgy.

Been thinking a lot and I believe the Tanabus itself is actually the manifestation of Nightmare Moon herself. It's the energy that CAUSED her to be real and not just cause of the dream at the start of the episode. Laura Faust has been hinting at it for a while. Tantabus = Nightmare Moon's remenants, change my mind
This is one of my favorite episodes because it gives a semi-realistic portrayal of guilt and living with your past sins. Luna psychologically hurting herself because she felt unforgivable is a real struggle many people experience. Only things I hate are Celestia is absent from this episode (the topic should've made it necessary for her to be present) and the implication it's easy to forgive yourself (if it was that easy, Luna wouldn't have harmed herself to begin with).

After Luna went into the dreams of the Mane Six to try to defeat the Tantabus, she says she failed and that the Tantabus will give the Mane Six nightmares until it becomes strong enough to escape into the real world. She also mentions that as long as none of the Mane Six dreamt of another pony besides themselves, the Tantabus won't be able to enter other ponies' dreams. But because Pinkie dreamt of sharing ice cream with the ponies in Ponyville, it was able to enter the dreams of the Ponyville ponies as well.

Although a lot of people can't feel better and stop self-harming from such a speech, some people can. Being told that no one cares about the bad you've done, and there's no need to feel bad for it anymore helps lift off some guilt if not all. Then again, the Tantabus didn't really properly disappear, did it? It somewhat got smaller and went back into Luna. It could've been an indication that it hasn't fully been defeated, but it's not strong enough to harm anyone else. But eitherway, in conclusion, being told that what you did wrong doesn't matter anymore cause you've changed and won't ever do it again can lift off some of your guilt if not all, which is what I think we saw in this episode. This will always be my favorite episode of the entire series for how well and how deep this touched me. It very accurately conveys how easy it is to lose oneself in an ever growing cycle of guilt and self-loathing Even though you sinned that it should get stronger with less guilt, I see it as the reflection of how much she wanted to punish herself, which would make sense why it got stronger the more guilt she felt. The mindset stems from an intense fear of making more mistakes, so the more guilt one feels towards doing the wrong thing, the more pain and suffering you want to inflict on yourself, as demonstrated by Luna feeling responsible for letting the tantabus affect others

This is one of my favorite episodes because it gives a semi-realistic portrayal of guilt and living with your past sins. Luna psychologically hurting herself because she felt unforgivable is a real struggle many people experience. Only things I hate are Celestia is absent from this episode (the topic should've made it necessary for her to be present) and the implication it's easy to forgive yourself (if it was that easy, Luna wouldn't have harmed herself to begin with).
Luna basically made a cheats-enabled-Server for all of Ponyville

@@BitterJoyXx The Tantabus entered other ponies' dreams because Pinkie dreamt of sharing ice cream with every pony in Ponyville.
After Luna went into the dreams of the Mane Six to try to defeat the Tantabus, she says she failed and that the Tantabus will give the Mane Six nightmares until it becomes strong enough to escape into the real world. She also mentions that as long as none of the Mane Six dreamt of another pony besides themselves, the Tantabus won't be able to enter other ponies' dreams. But because Pinkie dreamt of sharing ice cream with the ponies in Ponyville, it was able to enter the dreams of the Ponyville ponies as well.
Luna never dreams of her sister, confirmed😂

Although a lot of people can't feel better and stop self-harming from such a speech, some people can.
Being told that no one cares about the bad you've done, and there's no need to feel bad for it anymore helps lift off some guilt if not all. Then again, the Tantabus didn't really properly disappear, did it? It somewhat got smaller and went back into Luna. It could've been an indication that it hasn't fully been defeated, but it's not strong enough to harm anyone else.
But eitherway, in conclusion, being told that what you did wrong doesn't matter anymore cause you've changed and won't ever do it again can lift off some of your guilt if not all, which is what I think we saw in this episode. Luna's guilt being lifted off, but not all of it was gone.

One thing I thought about is that if she created it for what she did as nightmare moon she likely created it within the first 2 seasons long before the rainbow powerup was introduced.
also: in the beginning when spike is writing the letter to celestia, he rolls the paper so the side with the writing is on the outside, and there is no writing to be seen.
This will always be my favorite episode of the entire series for how well and how deep this touched me. It very accurately conveys how easy it is to lose oneself in an ever growing cycle of guilt and self-loathing
Even though you sinned that it should get stronger with less guilt, I see it as the reflection of how much she wanted to punish herself, which would make sense why it got stronger the more guilt she felt. The mindset stems from an intense fear of making more mistakes, so the more guilt one feels towards doing the wrong thing, the more pain and suffering you want to inflict on yourself, as demonstrated by Luna feeling responsible for letting the tantabus affect others
