    35:47 is where the 0-60s start...

    • @tydish
      @tydish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jeremy Good I thought the point of 0 to 60 runs is to show how many seconds it takes? He doesn't seem to post the time.

    • @SonyEnthusiast
      @SonyEnthusiast 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dieshelmon can you count?

    • @tydish
      @tydish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      ERON yes but I'm not a stopwatch. U know 0 to 60 is precise measurement down to fractions of a second not some guy watching a speedometer counting one one thousand two one thousand. I would think the guy who edited the vid could show a simple time in the corner. Not a biggie just thought it'd be convenient for the viewer instead of timing it yourself.

    • @SonyEnthusiast
      @SonyEnthusiast 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dieshelmon not that serious.
      6 seconds

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dieshelmon If I measure it based on the video frames and the speedometer there's margin of error. Speedo accuracy is an issue. One of these days I'll get a Vbox to measure it precisely.

    it seems you are the only one on youtube that understands how to launch this car! it shows clearly that rev hang is not an issue if you get the right shifting time at the right rpm. very informative video :)

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CivicChina Thanks! I've launched a slew of cars over the years and get lucky sometimes … I usually only take a few stabs at the 0-60 run. This little beast worked out. :)

    Follow up to my old post. I had a 1997 Civic HX, Lean burn motor. I installed the 13", 1994 Civic VX 9-lbs wheels with sumitomi htr LRR wheels, tire pressure always at 40psi, Transmission was also from a 1994 Vx for a longer 5th gear, lower rpm (75mph @ 2,500rpm). My best trip was roughly 49mpg get. I drove from Anaheim, Ca to San Diego, Ca, filled up in Anaheim, hit the freeway and drive between 70 & 75mph, got to S.D. filled up again. results,.... 2.5 gallons over 122 miles.... roughly 49mpg. man I miss that car.

    Your 2nd 0-60 time was better than "not bad!" I figured about 6.9s using my phone's stopwatch, which is great. Some other guy with an SI with hondata flash was pulling about 7.0s everytime. Probably an elevation thing, but regardless 6.9 stock is nice!

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Channel21Jaymz Thanks! There are lots of variables. Getting a good launch is key. This was a Stone Stock car, but with these little turbos, tuning and octane open up the possibilities.

    Thankfully I found your channel. I've been a mpg nut since I owned a 1997 Civic Hx (44mpg lean burn).
    NOW, please,...please do a highway loop test of the new 1.5t 2017 CRV. I've grown up, have 2 kids, but STILL crazy about fuel efficiency.

    hahah... I completely agree... you mention a boost gauge and gear indicator... I totally want both. If you figure something out let me know. Surely the LCD screen in the middle can be set to it? Would be cool if there was an extra button. On my car, there are two spots for some extra features that the touring must have. If one of those was an R button or something. Would set the interior lighting on, change the screen from radio to boost gauge, oil temp, AFR, etc... plug a gear indicator. First 6 speed i've had, so it's gonna take some getting used to. I liked your video, very thorough, I can tell you've had a lot of time to think while driving.

  • @neptronix
    @neptronix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey danny.. how much time do you spend in neutral when you hypermile? I've got a 1997 Nissan Maxima with a stick and i find dropping into neural as often as possible is the secret to averaging 31-35mpg. I was wondering if cars with smaller engines respond favorably to that as well?

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I typically coast in neutral when rolling up to a stop. Might be wrong, might be right, it's just the way I learned way back when. Blame it on the gas crisis in the 70s. I don't use neutral coasting much on the open road - only in Slambo when I'm aiming for big numbers. =)

    • @neptronix
      @neptronix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, that makes sense. We have these highways that have a mild roller coaster elevation change to them. I always drop into neutral and coast as long as i can when going down the 0.5-1% grade in between the 'hills' it has. My engine isn't coupled to the wheels about 25% of the time i'm on the highway.
      It makes a massive difference on this car.. if i just leave cruise control on, i usually see about 28mpg instead of 31-34.
      I noticed that you use cruise control a lot in your videos and was just wondering if you tried my tactic or not. It might make more of a diffrence in my car than the ones you've driven though, as that 3.0L v6 spins at 3,000rpm in 5th at 70mph, so it sure as hell has some bad pumping/drivetrain losses.

  • @mteske1
    @mteske1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Honda needs to allow 60mph in second. I remember my 8th gen si. I would get to about 57 and it would bounce off rev limit.

    Just bought the CVT hatch, EX. Had my heart set on a 6 speed but didn't want to lose all the niceties. I don't get Honda with their offerings. The MPG on the CVT is nice though! The CVT keeps the turbo on boil throughout the band. I live about 20 min from where you're at, let me know if you'd like to test it out.

    E15 typically has an octane rating of 88. So probably no performance benefit and I get about 1-2 mpg lower with my Ecoboost running on the e15. My Ecoboost says it can run on E15 and 87 up to premium fuels.

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! Which vehicle/engine? A 1-2 MPG drop for a 5% increase in ethanol content is a lot. I saw no drop at all when I tested the Elantra Eco on E10/E15. I want to do extensive testing on this, but need to find a way to make it happen.

  • @jeyseej
    @jeyseej 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dan, presumably you're driving a vehicle supplied by Honda, and you're relying on the manufacturer's trip computer for mpg. It really would be more credible to calculate mpg using actual distance traveled (eg, determined by a GPS app) divided by gasoline consumed. After dieselgate, I think we're all very much aware of how manufacturers can intentionally generate biased data.

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      JS I only test manufacturer supplied vehicles. There are so. many. variables. Over the years, I've found that Hondas tend to be conservatively rated. If I had the resources I would test for thousands of miles under highly controlled conditions, with complete transparency. Tank fills over short distances can be problematic. The more data, the better … that's why fuelly owner info is so important.

    • @jeyseej
      @jeyseej 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MPGomatic, thanks for your reply. For a show dedicated to fuel economy, credibility is a must. You really should verify the manufacturer's trip computer results. Investing in a fuel consumption meter isn't a big expense nowadays.

    • @jeyseej
      @jeyseej 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan, with regards to Hondas being conservatively rated, let's not forget the Civic hybrid fiasco only a few years ago. (See articles.latimes.com/2012/may/10/business/la-fi-autos-honda-claim-20120510) Although Honda won in small claims court, this case only illustrates the hazard of relying on manufacturers' (and, for that matter, the EPA's) data. Viewers trust you, Dan, and as a third party reviewer, it's important to provide independently ascertained data. I know you're open to constructive comments, since you quit saying "now" so many times after a comment I posted several years ago.

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Define "fuel consumption meter" … would that be a device that plugs into the OBD port? I have a few of those. :) But they all require calibration to the vehicle for accuracy. That takes miles and time. Please keep in mind that this is a TH-cam channel that I work on as a side project. It requires significant resources. I have no funding, only a week with each car, and a piles of bills to pay each month.

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      D'oh! I should have qualified that with "conventional" Hondas. :) I'm always keen on improving the channel, JS. I truly appreciate your input. The immediate goal is keeping the lights on. FWIW, I was never a big fan of the old Civic Hybrid. The new Accord is quite good.

    Damn shame you can't get the manual with the sport touring. I'm looking for a replacement for my 2014 Si and this is just a great looking car. Sadly, I don't really want to give up creature comfort and luxuries for a car with less power (I know it's faster) and the infotainment makes a huge difference in my buying decision imo. Maybe I'll end up with another Si

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotta wonder if they'll offer the manual in the Sport Touring down the road, or if the idea is to lead those customers into the Si. This opens the door for the aftermarket. The Sport Touring is priced well and the lower initial costs adds room for buyers (or dealers) to customize.

    You're in Hatchback. You're gonna have road noise. I own the same exact model in this video. Road noise is a non issue.

      Luke Hoisington I tested a Ridgeline recently for Autobytel. Solid truck. Unfortunately, I didn't have the spare time to shoot/edit a MPG video.

    So your one of those people that "merges" on to a HWY at 50mph. That is so annoying. So you spend your entire time driving like snails stuck in molasses just to get 1 or 2 extra mpg. Its a f-ing honda civic, the gas mileage is well above average. End of story. That took about 3 seconds; not 35 brutal minutes.

      @mpgomatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Boateng 2018 Nope. I merge and drive with the flow of traffic. Most of the time that's above the posted speed limit. Take a look at all of the 0-60 MPH tests that I've posted over the years. I happily stomp on the pedal when necessary. :)

      I don't see why they should be saved honestly. I learned to drive manual at traffic school and even as a former mechanic, I don't see the advantages of having a manual car in 2017 anymore.

    • @jonasjung7501
      @jonasjung7501 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, for driving enjoyment for some I suppose. I guess for me after learning manual it's hard to go back. Manual feels much more engaging and you have much more control of the car. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I encourage people who know how, and like manuals, to buy manuals though, as that's the only way they'll continue to survive is if there's a market for them.

      CVT's are higher maintenance, and a lot of them fail far before a manual transmission will. That's why I avoid the newer transmissions be it ford's powershift, Nissan CVT, and so forth. They still have a long way to go before I'm going to dump my hard earned money on predicted reliability of these types of transmissions. Maybe Honda and Toyota have a better game in town with CVT transmissions, but I'm still avoiding them based on consumer complaints. I'm even Leary of Hyundai's dual clutch transmissions. They are too new, and they cost tons of money to replace. My brother has two Nissans, and both CVT's failed before 100k. That is enough for me to stay away. $5 grand to replace on a cheap car isn't worth it either when it's all said and done.
