  • The price of gold has been rocketing upward recently and a lot of folks are interested in metal detecting for gold nuggets. In this video, I cover in detail my choice for the best cheap (comparatively inexpensive) metal detector that can do a decent job finding gold nuggets.
    The Fisher Gold Bug Pro is, in my opinion, a great first gold nugget detector for new prospectors. I’ve found gold with mine and it does a good job both of finding gold and yet it can be used to find rings, coins and stuff at parks and schools. Here is a link to this detector from High Plains Prospectors. (affiliate):

    For those who want to learn more about Prospecting and finding gold check out my book, Fists full of Gold. It’s an encyclopedia of everything on the topic of prospecting. It’s available on from High Plains Prospectors. (Affiliate) You can find it at:
    highplainsprospectors.com/pro...
    For even more information on prospecting, minerals, gems and other related information you can also check out my website at:

    though I had some problem with sea water It also th-cam.com/users/postUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH land for finding any things very easily. (thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn

      Hello, I'm Jess retired at 58 that was 10 years ago now I'm up in the Rouge River Valley Oregon and I found all of theses miners Tailings I think 🤔 well I've told anyways. So given that and all of the Gold clam signs around I'm guessing the information I have is good.
      So I went out and got a guy old pan....... I did find a "Speck" after hours of planning then along came Bulldog and she was so happy to find me she pushed me down in the water and it went back form where it came from DAMEDOGS!
      So Mama is going to let me get a Detector! But witch one,? I don't want any junk, not to fond of used or Pawn Shop's but seeing how much $$$ their getting I'm starting to rethink my thinking and start asking questions to people that are smart about this kind of stuff before I start investing $$$ into my new hobby. Hat do you suggest for a old guy &his wife(68&69) she refuses to let me go wandering by my self.
      I'm not into finding bottle caps or pull tabs but I realize that it can't be help because people are pigs. But Gold is what we are starting after , especially with all of the Gold Clames around where we live.
      I'm leaning towards the "MineLab GoldMonster1000" but it's coming in at around 1k
      The other is the "Goldbug 2" still coming in at around the same price? I'd like to have your opinion as I value it with your extensive knowledge and background. Jess & Patti ::))

    Another idea for pounding down rocks follows. I took a 2-foot length of 3inch pipe and welded a foot square of steel plate at one end. As a pounder I took a sledge hammer, removed the handle and welded a 4 fool long piece of 1 inch pipe at one end. For additional weight I poured cement into the lifting 1 inch pipe handle. Whatever chunks of rocks can fit into the main pipe can be grounded up. Modifications to the above can be made to fit your needs. Also, small holes can be made on the steel plate so that powder can fall out as you pound the rocks but there should be steel footing to keep the unit slightly off the ground.

    Having built my own BFO detector, when testing it using an O-scope, it became very apparent to me that a detector that could analyze the signal in addition to detecting it would be a world class better machine. Such analysis includes phase and amplitude and needs some really good signal processing. And that's where the money is.

    What I like about your recommendation for this detector is size of coil, weight of overall detector, and cost is ok. Following a gold hole, you can get the detector in the hole. So, not having a pinpointer, this can be an advantage. I dont have this Fisher detector, I have the Minelab xterra with the original coil and bought the double d coil. It sure added the weight. There is a lot of complicated settings on the Minelab xterra, so I have to constantly keep studying the manual to get it right for the application I am using it for. I am prospecting a California motherlode area so want to lessen technology and weight for this project.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont know which model of Xterra you have, but the highest ones are roughly similar to the GB pro, except for the small coil. The smaller coil is necessary for hunting gold. The GB pro is also simpler to use.

    Hi, Chris! I have a Fisher Gold Bug, and I love it. It's worth mentioning that, while the coil is waterproof, the control unit is not. I slipped on some wet bedrock and accidentally submerged the detector. It did not fare well.
    The reason I mention this is because (even though I had voided the warranty by getting the control unit full of water) the good people at Fisher repaired my detector at no cost to me. I couldn't believe it, I was fully prepared to pay for a new control unit. I had the detector back in less than a month from when I shipped it!
    Commitment to customers and service like that deserves to be talked about; it's another reason that the Gold Bug line is a good buy!
    Thanks for all the videos, and I think your book is pretty awesome too!

    At one underground mine i worked at we used a Gold BUG 2. a Gold master VSAT and a minelab GPX
    the Goldbug was the best at finding the real small gold up to 4 inches.
    The Goldmaster VSAT found larger gold pieces at about a foot. but miss really small gold found by the Gold bug.
    But the Minelab would find large clusters up to 3 foot but would miss small pieces picked up by the goldmaster and the goldbug.
    I like the goldbug for detecting mine dumps for the small gold missed by the miners locked in quarts.
    If I find enough in the dump, I will then detect in the mine for small ore bodies.
    In surface gold fields i almost always detect iron caps (Gossan)so you need to have a very good detector for them.
    I have one gossan with quartz veinlets I have been detecting for 40 years and very few people have found anything with their detectors. But I always find small nuggets.
    On the surface, I always dug hot rocks and have a small collection of meteorites missed by those looking for gold.

    The real strength in whatever machine you buy, cheaper or high end detector. It’s your ability to master that machine and understand it’s strength and weakness. I have quite a selection of detectors and some are easier to master than others. Reading the soil is another large thing to master. Patience is one of your greatest assets. Always have your manual with you when you get frustrated. Good luck hunting everyone.

    Hi Chris. Do you by chance have any thoughts on the Gold Bug Pro variants, such as the F19 or the Bounty Hunter Time Ranger Pro. Any noticeable differences or strong suits that each might have? The Bounty Hunter is a bit more affordable, but with its larger coil, might not be a good gold detector right out of the box.

      Large coils are not good for small gold - or small targets in general. The GB Pro variants are all very similar.

    Mr. Christ Ralph, I do have a Discovery 3300 made in Texas, sold by Costco, by $100.00 (online) and so far it has been great to me, all made in USA with proud, it have discriminating features for trash, you may lower the sensitivity and have pinpoint capabilities also, there is more, but those are the ones I use. One of the reasons I like my Gold Bog Pro is that it is so light. I am a 65 year young male with arthritis & I can swing the bug for quite a long time before getting sore. By the way, if you want a good, quick pain relieving gel, I use a product called "Zen" Herbal Gel which I can buy here in Australia. Zen is made by Martin & Pleasance & ususlly works within 5 minutes of application, you do not need a lot but, do not put it near your eyes. It alao has a pleasant smell.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      MXT is a good metal detector made for all purpose uses. Its good in parks, its OK for gold. Its not the most super sensitive. Use a smaller DD coil with the MXT, not the larger standard coil. The smaller coil gives you better sensitivity to small gold.

    Live next to the Bradshaw Mountains in Arizona, you said the gold bug pro will struggle with the highly mineralized ground, is the answer to lower the gain to almost nothing? Is it covered in your book Fists Full of Gold? The book is on the way, but i am new with this and have struggled a little on the first few outings. Have access to the Iron King area and it is Quartz veins every 8 to 10 feet it seems. Keep picking up plenty of tips and info on your many videos. It is very useful to have videos on so specific of topics, appreciate the time you put into them. Lots of mines (can't swing a dead cat without hitting one) out here, started watching the videos on what precious metal looks like in ore. As I've never prospected around Georgia, I dont really know what the soil conditions are. The other problem in the SE states is access. In the west, a large percentage of the land is federal and open access. In the east, everything is private property and access is difficult. For someone new, I'd recommend buying a gold pan and my book, then joining a local prospecting club and learning more. Then, when the time comes that you are more experienced, think about adding a metal detector for nuggets.

    Yet, again, another excellent video! I have watched about a half dozen or so of your videos in the last 2 days, and on the strength and quality of these, tonight I ordered your book! I am new to this, and have so many questions...especially after looking at the Fisher Gold Bug Pro tonight while on Amazon, where I purchased your book. I have a couple questions on the Fisher Gold Bug Pro, and the Gold Bug 2 with the 2 coils instead of the one oval one.... They look so different, the head units, and displays and instrumentation, and so, I'm wondering, is the #2 iteration that much better, and worthy of the extra $300.00 price tag? I do recall from this video, you said the regular Fisher Gold Bug Pro with the 6" oval is the best for looking for gold, so that's what I am leaning towards, though, as I say, I'm wondering if the pricier one is good enough to justify the extra bread for a newbie like me? Stupid question, right? Of course it's worth it, I'm sure! Ha-ha. And lastly, on this video, one thing regarding the tones and the overall functionality of the Fisher Gold Bug Pro, does the depth a "target" sits at, is that reflected by the tone, or does it matter; and secondly, what is the useful, practical depth that this unit can operate up to, all things being equal (as I'm sure larger targets are detected at greater depths (that smaller one), right?
    Well, I guess that's it for this video, and these comments, other than to say, I really and truly appreciate the thoroughness and depth of your commentaries regarding the subject matter, because the quality of your videos gives me the confidence to believe that I, too, can go out into the wild blue yonder and find something special, my own little treasures, and items of wonder and grace, that are hidden just beneath the surface of the earth, in the earth and of the good earth that the Lord Almighty has yet, again, proven His Majesty and Grace in creating, in His Good Works; and as these things which you so adeptly cover reflects! You are doing a wonderful job with your part in His Good Works, in the way you explain where this natural wonder may be found, and for that, I am very appreciative! Thank you!! God bless! Truly. God bless you and yours!!

      The gold bug 2 is OLDER than the GB Pro. The GB 2 is more sensitive than the pro, so it can see smaller gold - I have videos on it too. Look at my video on how deep will your detector go - You should watch that before you buy anything and you will learn a lot. Watch my video on how to select the best detector for you. Watch and learn first, then think about what you will buy.

    I have maybe 2 questions! I understand slow movement speed is required for older detectors like the Gold Bug Pro. Is this an accurate fact or is it just dependent on situation or ground type? I am also wondering if I am not concerned about small fine pieces of gold and am more interested in corn kernel size gold can movement speed be increases amd will the metal detector still read the bigger gold deeper in soil?

      The slow speed was required on very old detectors from the 1970s - ones that are decades older than the GB Pro. Take a look at my video on how to choose a detector for yourself. You probably want a PI type detector.

    Thanks Chris. Any chance you can get your hands on a Whites 24k machine and do a video on it?

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably not - I just dont have any contacts at Whites. However, it is almost $400 more expensive than the Gold Bug Pro and belongs in the category of VLFs that are more expensive and give a bot more performance. It also comes standard with a larger coil and that means a reduced sensitivity advantage that it might gain from the higher operating frequency.

      @@ChrisRalph I actually have the one that came with the large and small coils. It's a fine detector.

    Can you use the gold monster 1000. On normal pasture fields for normal detecting, gold coins or jewellery.? Or is it just for gold nuggets hunting on gold prospecting land…. I live in Cheshire. Thanks

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a metal detector and will detect gold, lead, iron, silver, copper, etc. However, there are detectors designed to hunt fields, parks and other general types of places - the design of the GM 1000 is to see targets much smaller than coins and jewelry, which are gigantic by comparison. A small coin might weigh 4 grams, but a small nugget weighs 0.1 grams, one fortieth of the size of the coin. The generalist detector is poor for the goldfields but better designed for coins and jewelry.

    Does the goldbug pro allow for a set of coils that can be used on an on a saltwater beach, or is the whole goldbug pro just not set up for that type of detecting?

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the detector has no salt mode and that is needed.

    so would you recomend it over the gold bug 2 . and also what about to a minlabe equinx 800. you did not say anything about the other oval coil that it comes with, would you say the little round one is still beter or not , thank you

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on what you want to do. If you want a mix of gold and coin hunting in parks, the GB Pro would be better. For pure gold hunting, the GB2 would be better. Watch my video on choosing the best detector for you.

    Hello, I like your videos.
    I've already sent a question but not sure I did it well.
    My question.
    There are gold detectors without coil.
    Instead, they have kind of small bars that have to be raised or put to one side or another.
    They more look like "machine guns"
    Is it possible to find gold with these detectors?
    Thank you

      Your description is vague, so I have no idea what you are talking about.
