  • The Gold Bug Pro by Fisher is a popular gold nugget machine. I recommend it as an economy machine for budget minded prospectors. In this video I talk about how I operate the Gold Bug Pro. I talk about how to ground balance it; what coil to use; operating in all metal mode; setting the threshold; setting the gain; What the output display means; and techniques for hunting in all metal while having visual target id.
    My Video on achieving accurate discrimination can be found at:

    I got my gold bug pro yesterday and read and Re-read the manual 15-20 times, but it just wasn't registering in my head. I was starting to have doubts about buying it. But after watching your video I'm confident.. No, make that, I know that I can use it and find gold.. or at least find lead. Thank you for that Chris!

    You give some great tips, and solid illustrations, in this video on how to use the Gold Bug Pro, and I hope others are able to learn from what you've so expertly shared on what a great little gold machine the Bug Pro is. I've found many, many gold targets with the Gold Bug Pro, and I use it in combination with a high-end pulse machine for a solid one-two punch when the mineralization changes to severe and overloads the abilities of the VLF. Nicely done, and all the best, Lanny

    I just ordered the Gold Bug Pro! Thank you for the video!
    I have an idea for a unit. That signal for the headphones can be used for a visual signal. Using a microcontroller, you can use a small display to show you the visualized wave pattern. I believe that I'm going to try building it. Then you'd be able to hear and see the wave form.

    The only thing a tad confusing is around 20:40 when you sweep over the magnetite and refer to it as an "iron mineral" (hot rock), which shows up on the arc display on the far right and than say "now we are going to go over the iron target", which shows up on the far left of the arc display. When would two "iron targets" show up on opposite sides of the arc display (I'm guessing that Magnetite is not PURE iron, but merely partial iron ? Great video, regardless and thanks for taking the time to explain.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Magnetite is an iron mineral. It is a chemical combination of iron and oxygen. It is not metallic iron. Hot rocks are often rocks with a greater content of iron minerals than the surrounding soil. Metallic iron in the ground is almost always some form of trash left by humans.

    Thanks a million! I've just started my research on gold metal detectors and wow, for a first timer you can get lost in all the wrong things...but this has been hugely helpful. I'm still trying to decide whether to go with the Gold Bug Pro or Gold Bug 2. I actually really like that display that just tells you the probability of it being Iron. If you can find a buck shot, then its probably good enough to make it meaningful enough to me. What would you say the biggest relevant trade offs are with the Gold Bug 2? I'm guessing size and depth?
    Do you know is there any data anywhere on "size vs depth" for GB Pro vs GB II?
    Or from your experience?
    That would be the main thing I'd want to know. Unfortunately the marketing info from Fisher is all about features rather than capabilities.
    Thanks again!!!

      The GB2 sees smaller gold, but the depth of detection for the two are about the same with the same sized coils.

    Hey Chris, thanks for this informative video. I have a Gold Bug 2, and I'm beginning to like the Pro. The tones are much more definitive compared to the Bug 2, plus the display is more informative. This must be Fisher's competitive response the Minelab Equinox. Might consider buying one ! 🤠

      The GB Pro came out years before the Equinox - something like 2012. Its not a new detector. While it is a sensitive detector, its not as sensitive as the GB2.The old GB2 is all by ear, no visual display. I am going to do a video on the gold Bug 2 one of these days. Hello Chris and thanks for the helpful video. Perhaps you can do a video on hot rocks. I am lucky to have located an old, small copper outcropping/mine here in Arizona that shows the beginning of being worked. My Gold Bug 2 detector occasionally finds some very nice specimens in the ore/dump piles AND the bedrock; A good metal signal sounds even in discrimination mode. The rock generally is heavy and blue (almost turquoise) and the rocks that "ring out" are heavy with bright silver material. I keep those specimens but there is no longer an assayer in our area. Maybe you could recommend an assayer also. Thanks, Tom.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually a hot rock video is a great idea. I am putting it on my list. I got a whole schedule of stuff a I plan to do, but I will do one this summer in the next month or two. I will cover hot rocks of all various sorts, plus hot spots in the ground and how to deal with them (at least as best as one can). Thanks! I use as my assayer - ALS Global - Geochemistry Analytical Lab in Reno, Nevada. They will accept samples by mail. I have no idea what you mineral is, but just a a total guess, there is a copper mineral called Cuprite that is electrically conductive and although it is deep red, on weathered surfaces it will often be a silver -gray color. It is also dense and heavy. Honestly there is nothing you can do with it other than dig the target and toss it aside when you see what it is. It conducts electricity like metal - I call it metal detector Kryptonite. It often does contain some gold and silver but is of a nature that the values would be really difficult to extract.

    Hi Chris, thank you for all your helpful videos. You got me excited and recently bought my very first gold detector the Gold Bug Pro on your advice. I'm very happy with it although I haven't found any good yet, just rust lol.
    However, I have one question, something I ran into yesterday; I ground balanced my detector, but wherever I did this (same location, different spots) I constantly had 3 to 5 bars popping up. It never went lower than 2-3 bars, no matter where i scanned the area. Often I got 5 bars, but never something showed on the top arch, to indicate what mineral it was. It stayed blank all the time.
    My detector works fine in all other areas, the way you shows in your video. However, not in the location i was yesterday. (Nevada desert route 164 if that matters). I was close to (and underneath) powerlines, but i don't think they will interfear with the detector, correct?
    What could have caused this weird behavior of my detector?

    • @ChrisRalph

      The manual is a sales tool, and tells you what they think you want to hear. Mineralized ground comes in all grades from slight to extreme. at the lower end you will be fine, in the middle you sill struggle some but pull through and at the upper end you will have difficulty.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The left bars and the big number have to do with the mineralization in the ground, so they depend on where you are when you are testing it. The small number is 80, that indicates the target is strong and very conductive, which a gold bar close to the coil should read. I would urge you to read and re- read the manual. The detector acts differently in discrimination vs All-metal mode.

      The little coil is 5" round and is made and sold by Fisher. The larger coil is great for coin and relic hunting, but not so great for gold. If the nugget is large enough, it could be seen with the large coil, but most gold is smaller in size.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not work that way. Like asking what is the largest piece of wood you have sawed with a hammer. The GM100 is a tool for searching for shallow gold, and generally small gold. Sometimes big gold is found shallow, but usually bigger gold is down deeper - and for deeper gold I would use a different detector. Watch that video I recommended in my last reply. Its on how deep does my detector go - but talks about the factors of large and small gold.
