It was years before I realised Eddy Grant was in the Equals! I was quite young when this came out but I remember it well. Great tune. Eddy certainly looked different when he grew dreads
Oh my god, This Equals song is so dynamite, plus, the ladies in this 1968 Top of the Pops were super gorgeous and natural, no tattoos, no piercings and no plastic surgery!!
OMG LOVE this song...listen to it EVERYDAY when I was heading to the hospital to see my husband who was recovering from a stroke/brain aneurysm & this brought a smile to my scared face...Thank You for this song & God bless!
I love this footage from Top of the Pops. Dancing in the audience is a guy called Russel who used to dance with me in San Antonio, Ibiza way back in around 1968 I think. He said his Dad was a camera-man on Top of the Pops. Every Thursday after that me and my Mum would go "Russel spotting" to see if he was dancing in the show. No video recording equipment in those days! It was great to see him strut his stuff once again. If you are reading this Russel you may just remember me from that holiday in 1968-ish. Cheers from me Carol, the Scottish girl u used to dance with and no romance involved! ❤❤😂
It's so ashamed that in the US mainstream oldies leave so many gems like this off their playlists because they were not #1 or a top 5 or top 10 hits. It's a disservice to the public in not playing them. In the 70s before stations went corporate they did play this and I got my 45 around 1975 which I still have. Gems like this make my eyes watery now days. After Eddy Grant had "Electric Avenue" in 1983, interest in this song was revived and it got some airplay again.
@@rasichap It has the rhythm guitar "skank" playing the "ands" in "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and" which is the trademark of ska. I don't know any ska with think drum beat, or that's quite so heavy-bass. Music categories only exist to help describe music, and we could describe this as basically a soul tune but with a ska skank on the guitar. If you made the skank more prominent, you'd start to have to call it soul-influenced ska, but since it's a bit low in the mix, I'd go with ska-influenced soul.
WOOOOOW!Brilliant, great voice by Eddy!My favourite lovely song, famous excellent sounds by Equals!Makes me feel young again, touched my💖!Thanks!💖💙😍💗🎙🎸🎸🎸🥁🎶💛💚🌞💞💕💙👌👍✌
I,m a East German, born in 62, but this Title is my favourite Song of the 60's 2. The Kinks; You really got me", and third: The Kinks, " All Day, and all of the Night"!!😂😂. Greetings, to all Rockers in Britain! T., from East Germany!
Back in the sixties at a wedding party or similar, if no-one was dancing, the DJ put this on. Guaranteed to get people on to the dance floor. Happy memories for me.
Really great bouncy tune and beat. All these years later I think it's a great song for dancing modern jive and salsa to. PS this record Equals a great dance experience!😂
Anno 68,in un bar del pallonetto, questa musica gettonata da una romantica compagna,si riversava nel vicolo stretto e affollato, erano gli anni della migliore gioventù e questo brano ingratamente era diventato inno ad un amore perduto!
Wow ... Child of the '80s so late to the game here. I had no idea that Eddie Grant's career reached this far back until youtube started suggesting videos by The Equals to me. What an incredibly groovy band I am just now discovering 50 years on from their heyday!!
I was 14 at the time, me and my mate was watching them through slightly open curtains (stood on their van) at our local social club, a band member came out, called us down and took us in to watch them, free entry. Great days
I'm 70 and when I heard this song it's like I heard it for the first time even though I've heard a million times I still think the 50s 60s 70s and 80s where the best musical breakthrough times in my lifetime it was the best time
You gotta love Eddie Grant. This song in '68. Fast forward to 1984 and Electric Avenue. A sixteen year gap. Perseverance paid off for him. Both are really good songs.
all time fav,of mine !! can remember, when I was standing in record-shop,singing this tune to the staff !! was 5 years old+my 13 years old brother wished this single so much !! as my parents weren't involved so much in these sounds(although being Elvis-fans),they dragged me there,to find "right record" for my brother !! Luckily,we could buy the record+i still have it with original cover + in good state !! THANX !!!
Que canción, ... super clásica, excelente, y siempre pensé que Eddy Grant la cantaba, pero aún así es muy buena, me fascinan las guitarras y el baile de las chicas.
Some people have commented that Eddy Grant had already left "The Equals," but he was present on first guitar left of lead singer, and not leaving group until 1971 following a vehicle crash.
Still loving the equals in 2024 🩷💕

Agree with you Mrs Sivyer. By the way 9 years later I hope you still be alive enjoying this music. 🎶. 🍀.
Just think, without the success of this we wouldn't have Electric Avenue.
Now I am 70 years young
I like it as 1968
Love this song in 2024.
Brilliant - and still makes me want to dance x
I'm 67 years old and I still dance to this.......classic

Had one of the most infectious rhythm and beat of any song of the era.
(It was #1 in the UK and Top-10 in the U.S.)
It always got me up and dancing.
strong simply chorus is the key to all songs that get people up dancing, it why so many queen songs are still played in clubs across the world.

60's garage meets ska ? ahead of their time, and great tune and performance. Love it !
It's more soul than ska but I see what you mean! It's not rare enough to be considered northern soul but it has the sound!
The North needs to back off. I'm the worst sister of all.... Omg 🎶🎸🦊
I'm not sure it's ska, but it sure feels fine!
It's not ska.
