They definitely do NOT make songs as good as this anymore. I love the soul singing near the end, that's just way out!! I was locked up in a childrens home 1967-68 for broken families, my mother never came to see me, but I remember this song cheered me up.
The bassist and flute player at 1:02 is Klaus Voormann, a brilliant ink artist and close friend of the Beatles, he designed and drafted the cover for their Revolver album and also produced many other beautiful, unique artworks.
Voorman was also with Lennon on stage at the Toronto Peace Festival (on film by Pennebaker as Sweet Toronto) in 1969. This was a monumental event in the history of rock. It was described by Rolling Stone as the 2nd most important rock festival ever.
Currently 62, haven't heard this since my teens. Ya know what? Still singing every word along with the band.someone, PLEASE bring back the 60s & 70s ! ✌️💖😸
When singer Paul Jones left the band, Manfred Mann couldn't have found a better replacement than Mike D'Abo. Also great that they eventually even shared the stage for the Manfreds tour. In the sixties, Manfred Mann was up there with the likes of The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Moody Blues and The Bee Gees.
Yeah it's the arrangements, that guitar, the instrumentation, and those voices. The genius is the person who decides "this is what it's gonna sound like." And notice how no two recordings sound the same. It takes brass balls to take a tune by heavyweights like Dylan and Springsteen, decide they fucked up their own song, and turn it into magic. They say that Bruce Springsteen's career was made by the album "Born to Run." Bullshit I say. To this day I don't think he's ever put out a record better than Manfred's "Blinded By the Light."
@@Hexon66 Well to say Manfred's "Blinded" is better than Springsteen's "Born to Run" is confusing in that they're both written by him. Nobody should try to replicate "Born," just like nobody could touch Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" or "Tangled Up in Blue." Bruce's version of "Blinded" is okay, M M's "Blinded" is classic. Just like what Jimi Hendricks does with "All Along the Watchtower."
In all the videos this is the first time I have seen the drummer with a neutral expression...instead of boredom, discontent....I think he FINALLY understood that THIS tune is a number 1 hit...and his bread and butter$$..
@peterfreeman6677 The problem is, if you take all the evil people out of historical sources, as this now is, how do you educate people about what happened and what to look out for, to stop similar things happening in the future? It would be like doing a history of World War II and taking out all of Hilter's speeches. You may not want to see it but you can't sugar-coat what happened.
Love this song, being a Birmingham City fan I remember we used to sing it about our centre forward Fred Pickering. You’ve not seen nothing like Fred Pickering.
Klaus Voorman, the plastic artist that was a close friend of the Beatles in hamburg en 1960 - 1961, turned into a musician (he was bassist of manfred mann from 1966 to 1969)
Voorman played bass (an 8-string) with Paddy, Klaus and Gibson prior to Manfred Mann, where he took over from Jack Bruce, who'd left for Cream. In addition to the Beatles' 'Revolver' and 'Anthology' album covers he also did 'Bee Gees 1st' and the most excellent 'Extraction', Gary Wright's debut solo album which also saw Voorman playing bass. Another fine album on which he appears is Leon Russell's solo debut, which featured an all-star cast including Ringo, Clapton, and others from the Delaney & Bonnie and Friends lineup etc..
I wonder whether Mike d'Abo was always as wonderfully good-humoured as he looks here. Regardless, he gets 10/10 for putting the song across, and that looks to me a really splendid jacket..
