Thanks, Man! Just what I was looking for! I would add two notes: 1. I was changing the passenger side bulb and had to remove the handle on that side. I then decided to change both sides and when I removed the strap, the whole panel came off, making it much easier. 2. The bulb is polarized, If it doesn't turn to lock when you put it in, turn it 180 degrees and try again.
Thanks man, this video helped. I have a 2007 sienna and its the same way... Also had to change the license plate bulbs. It is the same method, you need to take the back panel off and twist the bulb 1/8 turn and they come right out...
Figured out the same by chance. Was replacing tailgate latch when I found out that's the way to get the bulb. that's safter I took the car to someone recommended to me as a good toyota mechanic, and he broke the light housing trim while trying to force the housing out. If I remember the owner's manual also gives incorrect instructions, that you pop the light housing.
awesome.. i took out the bolt too 0:43... and couldnt figure this out.. its a good thing you posted before i took the whole damn gate off the car.. thanks for the nice diy tut!
The trim can be popped off with a flat screwdriver, I used a flat trim removal tool especially made for the job which is sold at any parts store, but a screwdriver will do just be sure not to break the trim with it. You will see that the trim is held in place by plastic rivet type things that can be pulled out from the metal frame. Not sure about the license plate bulbs but if there are no exposed screws on the outside I would expect that access is under the same trim piece.
Thanks a million - I had already damaged the body on the inside of the lights. This is not intuitive at all and too bad it's not in the Haynes or Chilton manuals.
Hey, Looking at the Toyota owners manual and Haynes book gave no help at all. Your video answered the bulb change issue completely. Thanks so much for taking the effort to share it with the world. You made it easy.
I had to unscrew the philips screws in the inside door handle (pry up the 2 covers first) and that strap thing before I was able to pull off the cover as shown. Ended up taking the whole cover off but I wouldn't recommend doing that on purpose. Hard to get the plastic clips aligned after the bulb was replaced.
thank thank you its really helpful.. you posted this. but on the down side .. that is a stupid desing on toyota end... ripping apart a panal to get to a light bulb.. either way.. thanks...
2008 works the same, All the hype about "NEW" models is bs... its just a change of "style/look" of the vehicale. I just did it on my 2008 =} thanks a bunch Mr. Brown!
Thanks a bunch, my 2008 now has sa new taillight, the manual was so badly written and uniformative unless it deals with what the signs on the dash means.... So much so it makes you want to sign up for the Toyota care plan... thats a big rip off.... 15 mins to get the parts from my house 3 mins to sfix it right in the NAPA's parking, just in time before it rained....
Thanks. Its the same with the 2004 model. Is there a video out there on how to change the spark plugs on this thing, I know with the 2004 it's hard to do?
Is there any bulb behind the amber lens? I don't see the amber light up and I do not see hwo to access behind it? All I see are the rear/brake bulb, and the reverse bulb.
I have a 2005 Sienna and am having the same problem. How did you pop the trim piece off? Screwdriver? Also, I need to replace one of the lights over my license plate and I have no idea how to do it. Any ideas?
That was helpful but I could not get the little covers off the bolts beside the handle on the right side. I ended up busting part of the plastic handle. Must be a conspiracy to make people go to the dealership for such minor things.
Very helpful! Thank you for posting this! By the way, does anyone know if the YELLOW parts of the liftgate light assembly have bulbs in them? mine are both dark....

I honestly can't remember. I was thinking there are only 2 bulbs in that lens assembly. I don't recall seeing that upper amber ever illuminate on ours either, which begs the question why is it there, but maybe it's just for cosmetic reasons as a continuation of the lens on the frame side.
Warning Warning Warning!!! When he says "thats easy you just take these two bolts off and the lense comes off" about the first lense (not the one he is working on). I just did it and there were 2 very small clips that broke which hold the other side of that lense. I went to auto zone and called toyota but those 2 clips can not be replaced and a new lense is needed (almost 200 dollars). please be very careful or a 3 dollar bulb could cost you 200 dollars (poor toyota design) like it did me.
Thanks, Man! Just what I was looking for!

Thanks Robert I appreciate it, I'm glad this helped.
Thanks Bud! I was getting frustrated because it was dark when I started. Your video was just what I needed to see.
Thank you! With the help of this video I was able to replace the brake light on my 02 Sienna.
I am about to replace the brake lights in my Sienna, this REALLY helps, thanks for posting.

Thanks for this post. I too thought that bolt gave you access to the bulb. Wrong. Once I saw the video it took no time at all.
Thank you so much, that one bolt lead me on the wild goose hunt trying to take the plastic off! I really appreciate you putting this post up!!
