Glad there's going to be more processing power. It gives developers more to work with. Visuals are fantastic, but processing power is what's really going to broaden the horizon in VR game development. Can't wait to see what projects come from it!

I remember when I first own an Oculus Quest and how revolutionary it was. No external PC needed and fully wireless. I could bring it to class or gatherings and everyone would be impressed by it. Then they added the passthrough feature, and although back then it was only in black and white, it's still an amazing experience having your real world and virtual world merge. Unfortunately I didn't have enough money back then to buy the Quest 2, but seeing that Quest 3 will be released soon, I'll definitely make the upgrade now.

All the work they've been doing is making great strides for the future of XR. If it were still the originals in charge, there would be no quest, nor would every tech company be heading in this direction. They get my respect as well.
@@GeBaker I can easily explain it and I respectfully answer: I bought the MQ2 a few months ago. I bought them new for $350. I don't know if you've ever tried (or owned) an MQ2, but what I can say from my experience is: I've gotten way more than my money's worth. Even being a relatively "old" product (within technological standards) it was a simply brilliant hardware + software experience. META (not OCULUS) is the company that made that possible, and it was META, not OCULUS, that has lost millions of dollars in an unprecedented exercise of corporate risk to try to get VR/MR mainstream. For all this they have my respect and when the MQ3 come out I will buy their product knowing that I am buying the best quality/performance/price ratio that the market can offer at this time. And no, I'm not a bot.

I just bought a Meta Quest 2 this week. My first experience with VR and I'm already in love with it. Will definitely upgrade to the Meta 3 as soon as it releases.

Finally! These new controllers look gorgeous! Amazing that the tracking algorithms have improved so much that the rings are no longer necessary.
I'm a little nervous about how you can grip them, since Beat Saber most players use non-standard grips...
@@ewokkris Oh I meant that a lot of Beats players hold the controller in a claw grip :) Because it's less tweaky on your wrists. Basically moving forearms more than wrists avoids ye'olde carpal tunnel :)
I do belive that its a combo of software and hardware, not only software. It would be very had to track the controllers if you simply removed the rings and would most likely be just as good as the current hand tracking. So, I would guess that they have the same tech in the ring imbedded on the lip of the controller.
The new controllers are not with new algorithms. They are like Quest Pro controllers, they have own dedicated cameras to track their position in the room, same way as HMD does, and uses as well IMU (Inertial Motion Unit) to calculate position based acceleration. But the bluetooth connection will transmit the input, as well their position to HMD.
So what really makes the difference, is the hardware and extra processing power.
Rings were previously required because HMD tracked with its cameras the controllers general position and attitude, while IMU in them measured the accurate motion and position, but with slight drift so it was corrected with cameras. Now the HMD doesn't do that, but each controller does it itself.

Facebook did implement new algorithm to avoid adding extra sensors and keep those cheaper.
So now they track logically that controller can't reach outside of arm's length, and they are used in specific attitudes and manners that allows to perform software based inertial update to their position, based how they should be in hands after some drifting.

I'm scared when they don't advertise the screens used and their resolution to be honest. If it was better than the Q2, they'd have told us.
we barely have specs at all , we dont even know how the tracking works , from the leaks I think its safe to assume a 15-20% resolution bump , the way better lenses from the quest pro , and a slight increse in FOV similiar to the pico4

Honestly, I am less concerned by the resolution. I hope that the 2x GPU bump is not entirely consumed by additional sensors or pass through features. More GPU power would be awesome to create more appealing games.

I'm here after seeing the price for Vision, lol. Definitely buying the Quest 3. I think that Meta should finally fully embrace the gaming community and VR and put their focus on gaming. Apple will dominate AR even with that high price but VR is where Meta could shine.

Well I can safely say that after watching Apple's unveiling of the Vision Pro, which starts at $3,500, I'm a lot more excited for the Quest 3.

Augmented reality is about to get way better, such a huge opportunity for many new augmented reality games to come to life. I'm legit excited. Also I noticed it comes with the new pro controllers so a tracking ring is no longer necessary meaning we can finally have perfect controller tracking even if our hands cant be seen by the headsets camera.
No they are not the same with pro controllers they don't have cameras so they don't track themselves. We ll have to wait and see how good the tracking is.

Wrong. They lost the tracking rings but are still IR LED tracked by the headset cameras. These aren't self-tracked w/ cameras on the controllers themselves like the Touch Pro controllers.

Seeing apple enters the competition is indeed great to see, but seeing Facebook (meta) pushing VR @ $300 back in 2019 with the quest 2 with the outstanding feature set also being a PC VR and a standalone at that price was just crazy..
I do wish Meta keeps on developing the VR technology further and keep doing what they do.

Quest 3 is an absolutely CRITICAL inflection point for standalone VR, and thus VR as a whole (tethered VR, be it wired or wireless, is an ever increasingly dead-end technology with absolutely ZERO long-term future).
Not only will it bring high quality MR via AR passthrough to the masses, but the internal SoC performance is FINALLY high enough to make console/PC quality AAA experiences in terms of scope, scale, & visual impact on the order of say Half-Life: Alyx or the original Asgard's Wrath possible to run 100% natively on standalone!!!
(The Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 [aka XR tweaked SD 8 Gen 2] it uses has literally near PS4 Pro levels of raw graphics performance [≈3.5 vs ≈4.2 TFLOPS], but w/ a much faster CPU to boot, and in the Quest 3's case has the same 8GB quantity of unified RAM that console did [although PS4 Pro definitely had more memory bandwidth as it was using GDDR* graphics memory + trying to render games at as close to 4K resolution as possible].)

DK3 here, so I guess late adopter. I'm just happy for competition. Valve has the PC central VR market cornered, but Apple and Meta might have a pretty even market share for the mobile crowd. It gives Meta some extra incentive (and it's not like they don't have the R&D budget) to give them a run for their money. In the end it just means better products for us.

I'm an oldster who isn't even a "casual" gamer, but I have the Quest 2 with prescription lenses and like that enough I'll get the Quest 3 when it comes out. I think VR is terrific. Maybe just because you are standing and moving around.

For everyone saying “apple one upped you” and “apple just killed this” the vision pro is $3500! And this is comparable for literally 1/7 of the price. And the real competition is between the vision pro and the meta quest pro. This never will be as good as the quest pro and it’s not trying to be. So stop comparing this clearly budget gaming headset with a headset that is 7x the price and is designed with workflow and productivity and professional applications in mind. So the quest pro vs the Apple vision pro is the real competition here. Not this. This is going to be an incredible headset, bringing some of the tech until now only reserved for the “professional” multi-thousand dollar headsets to the masses at an affordable price. TLDR: stop comparing this headset to one 7x the price and compare the quest pro and Apple vision pro instead, and this is a groundbreaking headset bringing exclusive tech to the masses.
This is actually a superior headset to Quest Pro in literally every way but its lack of the eye & face tracking sensors the Pro has. In literally every other way Quest 3 is actually superior for half the price ($500 vs $1000).
After 2 solid days of research and agonising over a decision between the Quest Pro or waiting for the Quest 3, it's abundantly clear the Quest 3 is far superior to the Pro other than it's overall design, eye tracking and self tracking controllers; as cool as those features are, what counts is performance and image quality which the Q3 is obviously superior in given that it's already packing higher resolution pancake optics than the Pro.
The decision was obvious to wait for the Quest 3 instead of blowing a grand on inferior tech.
@@synthrogue6856 Quest Pro still has a very important purpose/market, it's just not general consumers (or general business/enterprise, no matter how much Meta tried to convince people it was lol). It's really an early access developer device, and always has been. It's basically the direct successor to the Oculus Rift DK1 & DK2. Like those devices and "consumer VR 1.0", Quest Pro gave developers access to the entire "VR 2.0" feature-set (even if in very rough, early versions in many cases such as w/ the AR passthrough) literally YEARS in advance.
Aka, if you want to start messing around with eye and face tracking or AR passthrough in your developer experiments to start figuring out what works and what doesn't right this second, Quest Pro is basically the only game in town. 🤷 And while proper AR passthrough is coming to Quest 3 and in much improved form vs QP to boot, for eye & face tracking this will continue to remain the case likely until Quest 4 comes out with the full "VR 2.0 feature-set" sometime around ≈2026 (at which point we are likely to finally see a "Quest Pro 2" to once again push the development capabilities bar out even further for future mainstream headsets to again slowly catch up to over the next few years).
As an owner of both the 2 quest headsets, this is freaking awesome on paper. Cannot wait to try it out.
I haven't touched a console game in nearly a year. Quest 2 was delivered on release day and it's pretty much all i've played since. I will almost certainly be buying Quest 3 and I'm excited for the future of VR. Vision Pro looks amazing but that price tag! It makes me feel that the direction of the Vision Pro will end up heading in the way the limited adopters take it and not the masses like the Quest.

It depends on the brightness. I played for 6-7 hours once, until the discomfort set in. But if/when it's bad for your eyes, you'll definitely know when to take it off :)

I never experienced drift on the quest 2
Inevitable eventual stick drift is and will remain a problem for literally ANY/ALL controllers that don't use fully magnetic & wear-free "Hall effect" sensors in their analog sticks... Which for all the major game console/device controllers is basically only the Dreamcast. 🤷
Literally EVERYTHING else, including the Quest 3's (& soon 3S') "Touch Plus" controllers, uses cheaper but guaranteed to eventually wear out, drift, & then fail potentiometers instead. To get Hall effect sensor using sticks you generally need to buy an expensive boutique controller that includes them stock (ideally having Hall effect sensor triggers as well!), OR swap third party replacement sticks into the specific controller in question.
I'm not sure if anyone has made and is selling upgraded Hall effect sensor powered replacement analog sticks for Quest 3/3S' Touch Plus controllers yet, but I still totally expect that to happen at least at SOME point. 🤷

Vision Pro didn't even make Quest 3 look like a "disgrace" even BEFORE you considered the absolutely INSANE price gap. 🤷 Even over a year later and Vision Pro is still mostly just a glorified iPad Pro for you face for >3x an iPad Pro's price.
Hell, even the once seemingly "revolutionary/game-changing" eye-tracking based UI navigation system is getting a bunch of backlash as people start to REALLY come to grips with its many fundamental problems & faults.
While I do love VR, currently I'm more interested in the full colour passthrough and the possibility to develop experiences that don't necessarily isolate you from the people around.
I think that something like The Curious case of the stolen pets could have been easily developed as an AR application for instance. 🙂
If you worry about isolation, just stop playing game and talk to people :D

Then Quest 3 is exactly what you want. 🤷 It brings proper QUALITY perspective corrected stereo 3D color AR passthrough to the MASSES!
(As in AR passthrough good enough to clearly read & use your phone through, which is absolutely miles & MIIIIIILES beyond what even last year's and currently $1000 Quest Pro can do!
Apple's $3500 Vision Pro's AR passthrough will definitely still be "better", but unlike Quest Pro [which, tbh, was really always just early access beta dev kit HW that still got sold to regular consumers anyways] Quest 3's should be more than "good enough. 🤷)
And with proper real-time environment mapping to boot, thanks to Q3's brand new depth sensor!
(Aka, it can automatically detect & recognize things in your room like walls, tables, couches, etc... for use w/ AR without you having to manually map each of those things out individually in/for every single room you wanna use AR in like you did on Quest Pro/2...)

You're in luck on the FOV part! The Quest 3 has increased FOV with 110-degrees horizontal and 96-degree vertical Compared to the Quest 2's 90-degree FOV, both horizontally vertically.
Also worth noting: The Quest 3's horizontal FOV is increased by 4 compared to the expensive, business-focused Quest Pro.

@@TJ_KempQuest 3's horizontal FOV gain is actually a notable improvement over even a 3rd party minimal size facial interface + foam pad upgraded Quest 2 (i.e. using the super small & thin "Minimal" pad that comes w/ VRCover's "Fitness" interface), but the vertical FOV is actually much the same as with a said "FOV upgraded" Quest 2. 🤷
But that said, once we FINALLY get equivalent 3rd party minimal interface + pad replacement options for Quest 3 I expect its FOV to become superior to Quest 2 across the board! The stock interface + pad is even thicker & deeper than Quest 2's, giving it even MORE room to cut into for lens distance from eyes shrinking FOV gains!
And don't forget to adjust for inflation! It's actually more like a ≈$435-ish headset in 2020 pricing!
Not to mention that it has MORE than double the performance too! That's actually WORST CASE! In the best cases the new XR2 Gen 2's GPU can actually be >≈2.5x faster, and even approaching 3x faster for some specific workloads!
Not to mention again that the device's all important memory bandwidth has ALSO more than DOUBLED!!! (102GB/s vs 44GB/s). With it having a similar near +2.5x increase as with the GPU so as to be able to FOR SURE keep it properly fed with data! (Along with the +33% increase to sheer RAM capacity, with Quest 3 having a totally solid & PS4 Pro matching 8GB vs the Quest 2's 6GB.)
As a Steam User I am looking forward to the Index 2. But this one is also cool.

Hell, even just the Quest 1 to 2 upgrade was absolutely GIGANTIC with its basically straight up DOUBLING of the display subpixel count (it was "only" a ≈+50% bump to whole pixel resolution, but also switched from a 2x subpixels per pixel PenTile to a full 3x subpixels per pixel RGB-stripe pixel layout).

For the first time in decades I see a new device on pair with an Apple creation. As a Quest2 owner I think Quest3 is mind blowing and doesn’t lag behind Apple Vision. Weight, profile, eye tracking, fov, color pass through, battery… Kudos to Meta and Zuck for pushing the VR market

As a Meta Quest 2 owner, it would be a nice upgrade, The only concern I have is the huge cameras, with those there it will block all the space for stickers.

Quest Pro was mostly an early access dev kit device for XR developers to be able to start working with Quest 3 & 4's upcoming feature-sets (MR for the former, eye & face tracking for the latter) WELL in advance (even if in very early, sometimes rough states) than anything else. It was basically the direct sequel to the Oculus Rift DK1 & DK2, NOT the Quest 2. 🤷
im fairly sure the tracking will work either using the depth sensor or using hidden lights like the rings that come through the controller, i think the depth sensor makes the most sense tbh tho. also the strap at the back does not look like it has the plastic pieces that dig into the back of your head anymore!
Its a combination of that and handtracking.
It still uses IR tracking LED's tracked by the headset cameras. They are just embedded all throughout the controller vs being only on a mostly separate tracking ring. And to compensate for usually having less IR LED's easily visible to the headset cameras bc no big ring, they're also constantly tracking your actual hands in real-time.
Aka, instead of having to use controllers OR hand-tracking like currently on Quest 2/Pro, it'll be doing/tracking both at the same time! This also means we will likely get Valve Knuckles (Index controllers) style finger tracking when actually using the controllers!

My first modern VR experience was with the original Kickstarter "Oculus Rift DK1" development kit (which I still have, awesome plastic box and all) with its 3DOF only head tracking + 720p total resolution at a painfully blurry 60Hz w/o low persistence, meaning just 480p "standard definition" resolution per eye and so much motion blur that understandable vision was basically impossible whenever your head was in motion.
No joke, Quest 3 feels more like a ≈+15-20 year newer product vs the OG Rift DK1 than the mere +10 year later product that it actually is (2023 vs 2013).
as a tri-dimentional being I can assure you this is quite the gnarly upgrade
It's about time, the Quest 2 hardware is getting pretty old and they can surely do a lot better now. Still expecting Apple to blow this away next week, but these upgrades certainly look better than nothing. Looking forward to trying it.

Apples will be $3000 and not meant for gaming, and it's AR instead of VR. While this is VR that may get more AR features later.

I'm pretty sure they added hand tracking over link so passthrough over link doesn't seem too crazy. A bit stressful for the USB connection though.
Passthrough "passthrough" from headset to PC has been officially supported as an Oculus & now Meta Quest Link PC app Beta feature since literally Quest 1! (You can go enable it right now if you want in MQL's Settings menu).
It's just not used by literally ANY actual PCVR games/applications (not even Meta's own "Dash" PCVR interface that Link/AirLink uses!), meaning it's essentially only useful for developers. 🤷
Aka, AR/mixed reality applications will remain STRICTLY the purview of standalone headsets & their app stores pretty much indefinitely going forward, even if technologically that doesn't have to be the case.
As a metaphysical creature, i can say this is a really cool upgrade.

@@crazysailer5350It's about the same as Quest 2 (aka ≈90-100°, IPD setting depending) but has a MUCH larger/thicker stock facial interface meaning there's a LOT more room for aftermarket FOV improvement w/ thinner 3rd party interfaces & pads!
Even on Quest 2 you could cut the actually measured FOV gap between it & the Valve Index (≈120°) basically in HALF and get it to near stock Quest Pro/PSVR2 levels with just a thinner facial interface + pad swap! (Assuming you don't need to use the absolute widest IPD setting that is, which hurts FOV by ≈-5-10°).
As such, I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if Quest 3 is actually able to juuuuuust barely edge both of those headsets out in terms of FOV after a similar ultra-thin interface swap/upgrade.

Trust me, don't. Either wait for the Valve Deckard, or get a Quest 3. The OG Valve Index isn't worth it anymore. Anyways, on the bright side, the much more powerful SOC should allow for far better streaming through link cables, so maybe the compression will be far less noticeable. It's worth waiting to see. Although, just like you, I do wish they would just integrate DP like the Pico Neo 3 Link did.
Mark rushed to unveil this out of nowhere to try and up apple's rumoured unveiling of their own vr headset. I'm hoping for competitors to try and compete to the same quality and specs that vision pro showed to the wwdc attendees. At the same time, I'm scared of the unknown, of what these headsets could bring. Maybe I was just reminded of black mirror by the vision pro that's why I get so scared haha

Now this looks really exciting. I wasn’t aware that this advert had dropped four days ago. I saw the Vision Pro from Apple advert a few hours ago, and even though it looks absolutely insanely brilliant, honestly I’m more excited for this meta quest 3 because it’s something I can actually AFFORD. Sure, this thing is about £200 more expensive than Oculus Quest 2 base model was but that is to be expected and I’m sure the price will go down. We can’t be sure of that for Apple in any way shape or form. They are aaaall about money. This new meta headset looks really great, and even though I love my Quest 2 and find it to really be the headset that redefined the industry in what people need to be doing, I will definitely be looking to upgrade to quest 3.

Apple just announced their headset for 3.5k, no mention of gaming other than streaming from a console. And the comments are turned off in their video. It's trendy to hate on meta right now but they are our only hope when it comes to VR gaming. One thing I am concerned about are the sticks. I hope they are using a different design or have someway to prevent drift, as pretty much everyone I know or meet in VR has drift after the first year.

It uses wifi 6E but it can support wifi 7 I heard, might be able to use a wifi 7 antenna in the future for better wireless performance.
